[Q] Device reboots after SIM unlock - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
recently my D855 with v20T (root/xposed) started to sort of randomly reboot. It seems like once the device gets too hot, it's gone.
Happens rarely during general usage, often while playing a game, and especially often when starting the camera.
But it behaves strangely in general: if I do *not* unlock the SIM (and thus can't use the phone), the device runs forever, without a reboot, no matter what the device temperature is. Same for recovery (TWRP), it can stay there for hours and heat up however it likes, no reboot.
Removing the SIM and/or microSD does not make a difference, battery level does not matter.
I pulled a backup of the stock ROM, wiped everything (system, data, cache, dalvik) and flashed Fulmics 5.
Unlocking worked once or twice, the next time I entered my SIM pin, the lock screen showed, then reboot. This behaviour (unlock SIM, reboot) repeats endlessly. If I leave it turned off for 10-15 minutes - or sitting at the SIM unlock screen - it most of the time works fine after unlocking.
Wiped again, flashed robalm's v30F ROM.
Guess what, exactly the same.
On both variants, the phone got rather hot during the "optimizing app x of 190" screen, but never rebooted, only after I unlocked the SIM.
Let it sit overnight on the unlock screen, no reboot at all. Unlocked this morning, added my google account, rebooted - same thing again.
It's starting to drive me crazy, now it froze right in the middle of setting up the google account after another clean flash.
Is the phone prone for repair, or can anyone think of another solution to this weird issue?
Edit: Fun fact: if I manage to do the lock screen swipe before the SIM lock screen comes up, the phone reboots instantly as well.
Edit2: Followed the instructions from this thread to go back to completely stock v20T. Rebooted after optimizing apps before I could even choose a language, ran seemingly fine after this, started bootlooping after the first manual reboot. A full wipe later (volDn+Power) it at least boots. What the hell?
Thank you and best regards,
Sub

I have similar problem. Cant connect issue with exact cause, but it restarts almost every few minutes of use. Camera launch causes restart almost immediately. Phone is unusable. My VolDn button is not working so I'm currently a bit afraid to try anything new... I updated from Fulmics4.1 (i havent got reboot problems since last 1,5week ago) to 5.1 but issue persists even after full wipe. Seriously dont know what to think about it.
At first I thought that reboots are caused by low power (much more frequent with battery under 30%), then maybe big cpu load or high brightness.... now basically everything causes reboots. Im really annoyed this phone been crap since day one...
I havent tried your sim unclocking method as my doesnt have pin security etc. Let me know if you will find out solution.

Just received the device back from LG, they replaced the mainboard, even got a new IMEI and v30c preinstalled.
It is the same case, with the protective glass on top and a dent on the left plus the 2-3 micro-cracks around the frame.
Not sure if they swapped the battery. The problem showed up again with anywhere between 50 and 15 percent battery left.
Unfortunately I only tested it after leaving the shop, after a long walk to the bus which I caught just in time.
Setup assistant completed -> reboot.
Google setup nearly completed -> reboot.
Removed SIM and MicroSD, started phone, started camera, made a movie -> reboot.
Wiped again (strange enough, v30c only has 61 applications to optimize while v20* has 190+?), tried again, same thing.
Next, after letting the back camera take a movie for 2-3 minutes, I wanted to adjust display brightness to the max.
Result: see screenshot. This also happened with the cable plugged in.
I will return it for repair once more tomorrow...
Anyway, thank you for your answers

It's a common thing if you use camera specially if you take video in 4k mode your phone heat up and you can't use full brightness in stock rom it's a feature try moded thermal config...also try new battery if battery percentage suddenly dropped it seems battery issue because i face the same problem....

I used to have thermals installed, the 75 dregrees Celsius variant, iirc.
Everything else was at stock, except for one short excursion to CM12 and one to ... some custom ROM.
Think I never actually took 4k videos, and the first 1,5 years the phone got a bit warmer but never really hot. Only recently it started to get really hot especially when using the camera, this also consistently was what could cause the reboot loops for sure. Other candidates were a few games which use more processing power like Alto's Adventure.
The battery drops by 2-3% after a reboot, because of the load the phone has (and the heat it develops during boot).
Anyway, I added the screenshot to the next repair request, and the woman at the counter said they'd look into the battery specifically (it seems to give out too much voltage, she said), but also check everything else once more.
I'll let them repair up to three times, then ask for a replacement, should be legal within 2 years after purchase in Germany.
Also, next time I'll take the 15 minutes (before doing a 1h/direction trip) to factory reset the phone, set it up and start the camera. If it reboots during any of this -> return, repeat.

sub

Received my phone back from LG, finally.
Battery's broken - it outputs too much power.
Ordered a new battery and just put it in, so far no reboots during setup.
At least this got me a new mainboard and new IMEI

Hahahahahahahahaha
I just wondered why the phone shows 25 GB free everywhere, even without SD.
Turns out, during repair instead of replacing the 16GB/2GB board with an identical one, they installed the 32GB/3GB board

LG G3 D855 shutsdown on its own

Hello,
So I bought a G3 the day before yesterday and yesterday was my first day with it, and for that first day my phone had shutdown twice on its own. The first time was when my phone was lying on the bed and doing nothing, it had around 50% battery and was not hot or anything.
The second time was this night i don't know when, i have put my G3 on the charger and went to sleep i woke up and it had shutdown.
I didn't made factory reset when i got i from the box which i will when i come home from work and hopefully this will fix it, but does anyone have a problem like that? If is something serious i will be disappointed to return the phone.
p.s. My previous phone was galaxy s2 and had this king of problem only with custom roms and kernels, but i have not put anything on the G3 yet, except activating the developers options and had switched it to ART and the first time the phone had shutdown i thought that the art was the issue and switched it back to dalvik, the second time though was on dalvik.

I have the exact same problem. The past few days when I go to bed and wake up in the morning, the phone has shut itself off. I haven't rooted or installed any custom roms.
I would advise you both to take a factory reset, only install apps you need for a few days and see if the problem persists, if it doesn't install your apps back one by one as it may well be a particular app causing the reboots.
If you still get reboots after the reset and with no apps installed then you may have to take the phone back to swap it.

Yes as I said in the first post the factory format and hard reset will be the first thing that will be done as soon I am at home. About the apps i have pretty much basic apps (facebook, messenger, soundcloud, etc) all from the market except smashhit of which i have the apk and installed from the internal memory.
Except those apps I have 2 mp3s and some wallpapers and nothing else, becouse when i got my phone it was late on the evening and i had no time to do anything else. So the phone is pretty much out off the box and I was verry frustrated when the secound shutdown happened, becouse i tought the first was from the ART runtime.
Anyway today I will have more time to spend on the phone and we will see what will happend.
p.s. The phone does not reboots, just shuts off.

Is it definitely off or is the phone just stuck on a black screen? It is quite common on some devices when something is not quite right for the kernel to be unable to wake the phone up, the phone is still technically on but stuck in deep sleep.
does holding the power button for 2 seconds turn it on? or do you have to hold it for say 7-8 seconds?

It is definetly shut down around 2 seconds(the normal time to hold the power button to turn on) it turns on and work perfectly and does not show anything suspicious in its behavior, it's super fast, not laggy and etc, may be a little high on ram consumptions but with this havy skin i think it is normal or could not be normal idk, the ram consumptions go from about 1,2GB the lowest i have seen to up to 2,3 the highes i have seen.
Anyway about the shut off think yes defenetly 100% sure it is off, it happend again a while ago and i thoght the same thing may be it si deep asleep even i had chacked the weather 10 min ago and call myself from a friends phone and the operator said that the phone is off or i am somewhere without network covarage.
i got same problem. it turn off it selft and black screen even battery still 70%. rmust remove the battery to restart again, ealy bad. huft

If you have to remove the battery to get it to restart then its not actually shut off, its just stuck in deep sleep! which is usually caused by a bad app.
Yes if you have to remove the battery the problem is different, i just have to push the power button and it boots right away after it have shuted off by its self........
i didnt have this issue with my 855. but i did a factory reset after i got the phone just for the hell of it
So it's reset time i finally have some time to the some staff on the phone so hopefully everything will be fine. I will post if this fix or not the problem to inform the other people in this thread.

did you have any luck with the problem? I have the same issue, performed a factory reset and restored, hopefully it will fix too..
Hi all!
I have and have had the same problem and think I've pinpointed the problem to Google Search but can't 100% confirm it yet. I didn't do a factory reset when I got the phone and it shutdown during the night. I did a factory reset, made sure it got enough time to update everything properly. Problem was gone and worked fine. HOWEVER, the phone kept asking me which home screen I prefer at random times when I hit the home button. With random I mean like 4+ times per day. I searched the net and found a threat saying that a guy with a G2 solved the problem by removing Google Search updates. So I decided to do just that and get the factory version back and the questions disappeared but guess what, the phone shut down the following night.
Any takers or might this just be random? Note that it was working fine for three days with the updated Google Search and shutdown the first night after the downgrade.
So I did hard reset and so far so good the phone had not shutted down itself, and I updated everything which need to be updated (mentioning this for the guy with the upper post). So far so good I will keep you in touch if something goes bad...

I suggest take it to your dealer and get it replaced asap. I've seen lots of returned phones(my job at XXXXXXX company ) with the same issue, and as long as the defect is reproducible the dealer will give you a new phone. If it's outa replacement period then they'll probably repair it.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand shut down again but this time it took quite a bit time longer to shut off by its self so i tought the problem was fixed, but it's not, so i am going to the store which i buy it from to replace the device.....
Does this also happen with the korean models?

Why I want to throw my precious lg g3 into the ocean...

Hello everyone! ( i know that there are some other topics about this problem but no one seems to have answered them)
My lg g3 d855 ( the international model) isn't rooted and there aren't any modifications I've made on it.
I've bought 2014 on the 10 of september.
I was worried about the problem that causes the phone to shut down or restart and after one month of pure fun and no problems I've experienced one shut down. Since then only 4 or 5 shutdowns.
About 4 5 days ago, when i tried to send a snapchat image just as I was pressing the button to make a picture the phone restarted. I then tried this same operation 2 3 times and the same happened. After that it got ok but that was enough for me. Now without wasting your time so much explaining everything I must say that since then the phone restarted about 20 30 ties and shuted down without me being able to start again unless i remove the battery around 10 times. This primarily happens when i use the camera of the phone no matter what camera it is ( google camera, defualt camera app, snapchat etc.).It usually happens when i touch the button to make a picture but not always, sometimes it happens as soon i launch the camera app, sometimes i make pictures without getting the phone restarted. It also shuts down or restarts when i open the app to view an image or make some other operation but primarily it is when i use the camera. This problem i think gets more often when I am outside not in the house but i haven't noticed any difference. I highly doubt that it is from heat . I even tried blocking the sensor for light but it's not it.Also from few months when i make a call and and try to use internet or google while i'm talking with someone the phone often restarts or shuts down. So these are my problems. I hope that i haven't bored you .
no remove the battery 10 times but the shut down that happened
Oh oh Oh . I also forgot to mention that when the phone restarts after it has crashed lets imagine that i have 30% battery capacity after it has restarted it shows f.e. 9% and it will keep show this unless i remove the battery and the it show f.e 27. Also the battery life on this phone is pretty terrible. For 3 hours usage on wifi with 100% the battery drains
Your phone is bugged. As it happens mostly when you use camera, it may be the problem. What do you do before you take photos/videos?
Has your phone been in water?
I would do factory reset. If it still occurs, I would send it to LG. That is not normal behaviour for G3.
Battery consumes faster if you have ton of apps running, brightness is at 100% and you are in bad reception area.
Factory reset.
Don't make three posts in succession.
You happy. We happy :good:
Well thanks for the replys. Today my g3 restarted around 10 times and it isnt only tge xamera though. It restarted on google search on voice recoeder it restarted and never turned off again as it only showed the start screen. "lg lifes good" (with you it isn't ) i love my phone but.... Ut restarts now on everything. I havent dropped it is the spigen slim armor case. I havent wet it. I clean it almost everyday. When it restarts the battery indicator gets crazy. Maybe factory reset but so much more work to install all rhe apps again pfff.i also use on 100 brightness only outdoors.

Factory reset. If you're not rooted with a custom recovery, it really is your only troubleshooting option at this point.

LG G3 D855 - Rebooting when not charging

I have an odd problem with my phone.
All of a sudden the phone would automatically shut down and reboot when it's not plugged into a charger.
IF FROM BEING POWERED OFF
It shows the LG logo, stays there then shuts down and reboots to do the same thing over and over again.
IF POWERED ON THEN CHARGER REMOVED
it will stay on for a random amount of time, but not more than a minute. it will function properly for awhile then shut down, reboot and do the same thing as above.
IF WHILE BEING CHARGED
it works normally. i can do anything on the phone like theres no problem.
even stranger:
i did a factory reset, and it did so without a problem. when it finally rebooted and it shows the first few options (language and accessibility) when setting up the phone, it stays on for a long time - as soon as i touch the screen though it powers off and reboots again. i was able to set things up again while the phone was plugged in.
now i cant use it without the phone being charged.
*additional note:
it may be related but this started the other day when i went out for my daily jogging routine. I usually keep it in my front shorts pocket while i listen to music. about 40 minutes in and i realized my music stopped - when i checked the phone it rebooted by itself. maybe it got wet by a bit? when i took it out of my pocket it was pretty dry though - it wasnt like it was dunked in a glass of water or anything.
I checked online and some have reported having the same problem and changing batteries worked. i just dont want to waste money on something that might not even fix the phone.
You need a new battery i believe, had a problem like that with a family members G3 - battery replaced, fixed - otherwise it would turn off randomly/when doing anything that is considered intensive (touching the screen counts)

just saw your reply now, thanks for taking the time to reply.
i did a lot of research when the problem arose, tried factory resetting, switching roms (to stock and custom) and nothing worked - asked around and it seems it WAS the battery all along. now it works perfectly and it lasts much longer than before.

Hey, I had exactly the same problem. Did everything but no use. Then i changed the battery and voila no restarts or power shut down since 4 days.

LG G4 freezing after motherboard replace

Before:
One day my LG G4 freezed, so I've took out the battery, putted back again, but it never loaded anymore.
So, I've took it into the service and they told me that chip is damaged. They replaced whole motherboard as they didn't know how to fix the chip itself.
Phone worked fine for some time, but now it's freezing again.
Now:
When I double tap on display or wake phone with button, it takes more than 5 sec to wake!
When I'm working with it, sometimes when I slide down upper menu with connections(and so on) system freezes for couple of seconds
Battery is draining very fast and whole device is usually very hot!
I've made factory reset. Install only unnecessary applications, but still after some time it does the same.
I'm realizing that they put some **** into my phone, but
My question is
Do you know how to deal with this freezing ? I don't need anything fancy, just few applications to work. I don't even mind if whole phone will be black&white or do custom rom, if it helps preformance and working smoothly.
I'm travelling now and I really need my phone work, atleast in emergenci mode
Thank you so much!

LG G3 Keeps shutting down - is it hardware?

Few days ago my phone began to shutdown either immediately or after a short freeze of the system. This happens in many situations, although mostly outside/when I'm on the move (I tried disabling GPS but it didn't help). Usually when I switch it on again it either shutdowns just as the lockscreen appears or doesn't work at all until I remove the battery for at least 10 seconds. The latter sometimes helps and the phone works properly for a couple of hours and the whole thing start over. I tried clearing cache, restoring factory defaults, changing the software completely (Fullmics, LineageOS) but nothing helps. I made sure that this is NOT battery related - I have a spare one and it's all the same.
I'm not sure whether the issue is hardware or software related. Here are my suspicions:
Why it might be a software issue:
- Just before the phone shut down for the first time I noticed that the upper part of the display stopped working - I simply could not pull down the notification bar. I rotated the screen and noticed that the same thing happens to the menu buttons which obviously replaced notification bar in the upper part of the screen. Eventually it turned out that this is not a defect of the screen and that part of the screen simply froze. After reboot it worked normally for a while and then froze again. After changing the software the problem seems to be gone.
- When I'm in recovery mode (TWRP) the phone usually is stable, it shut down only once or twice
Reasons for hardware:
- For a couple of months now the Wi-Fi is not working properly. It disconnects and whenever I try to reestablish the connection it goes into "Saved->Connecting->Saved". Maybe this is just the next step towards the graveyard?
- It's about 6 months since the warranty has expired
Have you experienced this and/or have any idea what's going on?
EDIT: With time it was more and more difficult to turn the phone on and keep it running and right now it's not turning on at all.
EDIT 2: I made it run again. TWRP works perfectly but once I reboot to System it shuts down almost immediately.
Nobody has any idea?
I'd guess it's the battery.
When I bought my G3 in Oct 2015, I had random reboots aswell, nothing helped (turning off mediascan, restore kdz via LGFlashtool 2014 etc.).
So I went ahead and bought another battery (7000mha) from ebay.
Never again suffered from those annoying random reboots
(Inserting the old battery, makes the reboots reappear, so that is postivie proof for the battery thesis).

As I wrote above, I have two batteries and the problems exists with both of them.
In that case try this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/g3-hardware-problems-solved-bsod-screen-t3597086
Regarding your battery: You didn't only get "original" batteries ? I have a third party one... All original ones I had so far failed me...
