Install apps directly on SD - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

Hi guys. I absolutely love this tablet, but when I bought it I was probably distracted, because I didn't notice 16GB (P605).
I use it a lot for games, but 16 could be too few sometimes.
I tried to move apps to SD, but I have not so much more free space.
I even tried with Link2SD to set installation directly in external memory, but it doesn't work. How can I do it?

You have 2 options if you're rooted:
1) GL 2 SD (root)
2) Roehsoft Ram Expander
Check Play store for them. Use big SD card (32 or 64 gb).

I already have 32. Are you sure GL 2 SD supports Lollipop?

I hope that in the coming future more apps will become movable. App2SD was neglected by Google, worked best in 4.0.3 and not at all in 4.0.4. But Marshmallow features Adoptable Storage. AS seems to use the same method to determine which Apps are movable. And some devs simply don't seem to care so far, as there's many more movable stuff IMHO. Apps w/o autostart services, certain background tasks and widgets.
I have used App2SD on my very first Android tablet with 4.0.3 and a 4,6GB data psrtition, till I disvovered, that the internal space would be nuff for the coming years. Still is. But I have a phone with a 2,3GB data partition. Right before I was ready to dump it, there was stable CM13 release with AS. Now it's useable again, and even more apps may become moveable soon, freeing more internal space, and MM/CM13 also fights RAM shortage with Zram and paging, which seems to have become a necessity with 1GB or less, but of course not yet here.
Cos I went thru really much trouble with that phone, I still haven't got the balls yet to even root my Note, I don't want to be thrown back to a full brick again and again, and without some backup, I think Helium won't work well when it comes to restoring.

I tried GL 2 SD but it didn't work (or didn't find the apps I wanted to move). Only app that could be moved is Titanium Backup, nothing else.

The GL 2 SD is very good for moving big games data to SD card to free up space. I used it in the past mainly for games data.

Maybe it itn't optimized for Lollipop. At the moment I tried it I was having Springfield Tapped Out, Gangstar Vegas and Wild Blood installed, but none of them was recognised.

Maybe there is an app2sd tool which can override the setting of the target apps, allowing to move 'em all at own risk. Many will still work, I' m sure. The rest must be moved back.

Thank you for all answers. I found a different solution.
I flashed latest official Samsung (full of bloatware) so I was more worried about space (before I was with David' Rom 3.0). I found Debloater app and gained 500 MB removing Google and Samsung bloatware.
After that I moved every app (those that can be moved) to SD. It was the first time for me, and I was shocked when I found 2gb extra free space. I couldn't believe.
Obviously moving whole games data I could have extra free space, but now I have 5 games installed and 1,9 gb free. Not bad!

[Q] Experience with 16GB Note 2 Storage and apps

Just wondering if those who are lucky enough to already have their 16GB Note 2 have had any issues downloading a high number of apps. I have a Nexus 7 16GB version, but have found that I cannot download all of my apps (roughly 200) before I get a low storage warning. It usually doesnt let me get over 100 apps downloaded, and that is with nothing else on my device. I realize the Note 2 allows an SD card, but that doesnt help with app storage.
Any thoughts from users that currently have their device would be appreciated. I'm in the US and have been waiting anxiously for quite some time for this phone to be released. Id hate to cancel my order since who knows when we will get the 32GB/63GB versions.
Thanks for any replies/information.
It's not really a big issue unless you decide to install several big games, those occupy a lot of space and then you will quickly run out with 16GB. I have quite a lot of applications installed and a handful of games and all that occupies only 2,6GB which gives me plenty of free space to use for everything else.
Then i regularly move out photographs and filmed content to my stationary computer to not clutter and slowdown my device with such content.
/ Magnus
Here's what I have experienced. This phone is a beast, most programs install instantly, I was extremely shocked and pleased. The uninstalls are even quicker.

It totally depends on what apps you have.
I have 235 apps and I have about 5.8 gig remaining out of the 10.
I also have several games that use 1.5 gig EACH, and bard's tale, if you let it, can chew down 3.5 gig on its own.
You pretty much have to root if you want to run a bunch of those.
- Frank
Can anyone tell me if these types of apps can install to the SD?
With Stock? With Root?
Google Music (pin files to SD?)
Google Maps Cache
Google Play Movies
Any Gameloft Games?
Rockstar Games (GTA, Max Payne)
That is pretty much the deciding factor for my purchase of a Note 2. If its too much of a pain to actually use the SD card, I will just stick with my 32gig Gnex.
it should be a way to move apps to the sd card
There is a way, look in the development forum. You need a custom kernel and then you can "switch" your internal and external storage. The feedback is good.

You can pin Google Music files to the external sd card so it won't take up space on the internal. I have about 25gb of music files pinned to the external card. Dunno about games as I don't have any...

[Q] anything like HBOOT to repartition internal memory?

Hi!
As I understand the Xperia S has a huge internal memory of 32GB, but this is parted into two partitions: One for Apps (known as /data on my HTC Desire) and one for all kinds of user data (/sdcard).
Right?
I know I can move most parts of most apps to /sdcard with internal functions. But not all apps.
So I would like to have more space for apps - is there anything like HBOOT / http://alpharev.nl to repartition the internal memory for the XS? Anything to make the app partition e.g. 5GB instead of 2GB?
Or: Is there any custom rom which uses the whole internal memory at once with no extra partition mounted to /sdcard? As I understand, this is the way google wants to handle this in ICS. One big internal memory for all purposes.
First, there is a SD card, a data one, a system one, a cache one, boot and maybe some obscure ones. Second, as I'm aware, no known way to increase it. And you don't need a huge partition. You can have a hell lot of apps with 2 GB. The data goes to SD card anyway.

to be honest, I am not sure about this.
At the moment I have a Desire with /data 1,5GB (via ext4 partition). I have only 200MB(!) left!
I have no big games on the phones. Some apps are moved to sd, additional. And there are no many big ones on my phone.
e.g. Facebook has 50MB and cannot be moved. G+ 30MB and I want to use the widget, so it is not moved. Amazon App Shop 30MB, cannot be moved. wetter.com 20MB and this is after moving!
And these are all of the huge apps on my Desire with only 200MB free. the other apps are odds and ends.
So, projected to the XS I would have 700MB free in the moment. And there are many apps I had to delete on my Desire and I want do install them. e.g. the Simpsons game 100MB and cannot be moved ...
/data 233MB free of 1511MB:
/data/app 426MB
/data/dalvik-cache 387MB
/data/data 300MB
/data/app_s 97MB
I, sometimes get to go through my apps list, I look at each one of them, and think: Do I really need this app? I can't uninstall it and download when I need it again?
It may help you.

hm, this sounds like shortage management. And when I by a new phone I do not want to do shortage management, particularly on a phone with 32GB.
[/]
But seriously: my smartphone is my digital Swiss army knife. I do not want to think about "do I need this app the next week?" And even worse "there was an app long time ago which would help me now, but which one from the bunch of similar named app was the one?"

I get it... Well. I'm running out of options right now... Maybe move some apps to system? Needs root, tough
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk HD
dont know if this is what youre looking for:
well for storage you have 2gig phone memory and 25.80 internal memory,
all of the apps installed on your phone if you didnt move to sd will go to the phone memory which is 2gig,
all of the datas, obb files,pictures,movies,etc.. will be loaded on internal memory,
so the 2gig memory on your phone will be big enough for all your apps, meaning only the .apk files are stored on phone memory
and not the data.

Using External Storage

Has anyone determined a method for getting around the later Android build's refusal to allow you to install or forcibly move applications to the Ext SD card? I've tried FolderMount but its VERY situational, and in my experience, it rarely works. I was hoping that people have figured out how to make the Ext SD card more functional for the Note 8.0 since the 6gb of usable space is pretty near useless with 2GB+ games being released now.
Alternately, has anyone checked if the Note 8's internal memory is an SD card and if it could be replaced and then the device reflashed? Say .. with a 64GB ?
You could use the apps2sd script method to swap external memory with internal:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2276193
I did that at first, and it worked great. There are potential issues though, so read the whole thread. I now use Folder Mount.

any idea for non-rooted ,cause i dont know how to root the At&t variant.
Without root the answer is to wait until Samsung enables it in the ROM, which I doubt will happen.
Also it helps if you pay large games one at a time instead of keeping them all installed. Much like ball in the day when hard drives were only a few hundred megs .

The leak 4.2.2 Rom for N5110 and the latest 4.2.2 UK Rom for N5120 from Samsung include app2sd. If you would not like to root, you can wait for the official upgrade to 4.2.2.

Moving app to sdcard: are they making fun of us?!

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but what's the point in being able to move apps....to the internal storage, not to the external sd Card?
Am I missing something here? I though I could really move apps to the external sd Card. If you install few games like Nfsmw, fifa14, asphalt 8 and rr3 you've already occupied 8gb of the 12gb available to the user into my new Note 10.1 2014 LTE 16gb!!!!!
I do hope I'm missing some hidden settings, otherwise what is it for the option "move to sd card" into the app settings?!
Thanks in advance

How I'd love to say "hey you are right", but you are not.
Did you really try? Did you go looking for the stuff you moved into the external sd card (/storage/extSdCard/) instead of the internal storage (/storage/emulated/0/)?
I tried even on my galaxy note 3 to see if there's any difference and sadly there isn't. Same behaviour. Although on the note 3 is not such a problem cause I have 32gb for internal storage.
This is really a Shame! I don't want to be forced to root my device to solve such a issue.

I notice a huge difference in available space for both storages and if you remove the sd card, those apps won't launch anymore. Pretty compelling to me that it works. I thought I saw the moved files in a hidden folder before but I can't find it now

that's true, if you remove the sdcard you cannot start the applications you moved anymore. And this makes me even more angry about it.
There's no reason for such a behaviour as no files was moved to external sdcard in any visible nor hidden directory. In fact there's even no change in terms of available storage space after moving apps.
Try to perform a search into your external sd card and tell me if you can find Them! :/

That dir is not the external sd card! Moreover there are only the app files and not the data files which are the heaviest ones in term of reserved space.
Try installing a big game like Asphalt 8 which uses 1.56GB of storage. Then look at the available space into the internal storage and the external sdcard. Try then moving it to sdcard and then look whether you have 1.56GB available space more than before, while at the same time you have 1.56gb less into the external sdcard.

I think that path is linked to the extsd card, and data like asphalt 8 data isn't movable by samsung's method cause the data wasn't downloaded through the play store, it was downloaded by the app. So the only way to move that is with root and something like foldermount
Also heres a quick link i found with some information on the asec folder. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13043783/android-move-app-to-sd

Interesting link. Unlucky me my adb setup is messed up, then I cannot check the mount point for /mnt/asec.
Anyway, Asphalt8 is entirely downloaded form the playstore. Just give a look to its size into the PlayStore description. :/

Good point. I think samsung's method of apps to sd only works on the application files, not the data files that go in the android/data or android/obb folders. Like i menioned before, there are other ways of moving those files

It works well for the games i play like kingdom rush, plants vs zombies 2, dead trigger 2 and some others, it's saved me about 700mb. Actually now I remember how i saw those files before, if you pull the sd card out and put it in a computer, you'll see the asec folder there so i'm 100% sure its on the external sd card.

That's right. The /mnt/asec is the mount point for the .android_secure into the external sdcard. But games like pvz2 and dead trigger 2 keep only application files and lib there. No data files. Then you won't save more than 25mb each! :/
Still remains a pretty useless feature. What a pity!

Want Big Games on GPad using external? (Solved)

Used Folder Mount app and you can now store games on your external just follow the steps
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192122
Hit Thanks if this helps
Folder mount lets you mount 3 folders and doesnt let you mount obb files unless you pay for the full version. GL2SD is free.
+1 for Folder Mount. Reason being is that it's not just for games. Can be used for any large folder and is extremely easy to use. Yes it does require you to upgrade to premium for more than 3 folders but it's only $1.99. Also developer is still active and responsive on the forums. It had an issue initially with the G PAD that didn't allow updates via Play. Reported it to him and he quickly fixed it.
This was the biggest flaw with the g pad 8.3 for people like me who like to play games on there tablet. A few big ones installed and the internal storage would be almost completely filled up and you can't install apps by default to the sd card making the 64ghost I bought meaning less. But luckily this app exist I'm only using the free version to move my biggest game over for now but I think I will get premium.

I believe that change mentioned in the article you linked just makes it so that apps can write to the SD card, but doesn't force an app/game/etc. to do so. This hack that the OP is talking about seems to allow linking of any path on the internal storage to external SD (or at least most). Pretty interesting.
