Idea contest for the future development of open source software and operating systems - About xda-developers.com

Dear users of xda developers
Within the context of a research project, we are investigating the potential of online communities as an instrument for the prediction of future developments and trends. We are planning to execute an “idea contest”. The project separates in four phases.
THE THANK-YOU GIFT
The author of the winning concept gets a $20 Amazon gift coupon for free disposal.
We are looking forward to your discussions! My colleague @Gideon92 and I will guide you through this contest.
And now let’s start with phase 1!
First phase
How will open source software and operating systems look like in the year 2030?
This phase is a brainstorming of the future development open source software and operating systems.
The ideas and concepts should be posted within this thread and be discussed with other users. It doesn’t matter how detailed the concepts or ideas are. There is no right or wrong. Every idea and concept, regardless how farfetched or ‘exaggerated’ will be considered.
Time period for this round: 14 days.

You have a thread on this already here,

I'll close this one, but members will still see this here and can go to the link above. :good:
Thanks!

(request) Mixed post/read privilege posts/forums

After the amount of cleaning required of the recent WP7 ROM dump post, it came to me to recommend that invent or implement a way for a group of developers to hold their conversation in public view (to further learning and openness) while not simultaneously giving everyone the right to post to that topic.
This seems preferable to having completely private developer groups form where discussions no longer provide learning opportunities for less experienced users.
Invite-only reply, but all can read.

I'm not sure if this is possible with vBulletin, but there are a number of chefs / developers in the Chef Central forum who have moderator rights in that forum, which should allow them to post in closed threads, if required.
It's often a problem with anything new like this, everyone gets excited and wants to talk about it, XDA has 5000+ members online most of the time. I don't think preventing people from posting is the best way forward though, who's to say one members opinion is less than any others. In my experience, soon things will be old news and those in the know will have all the facts and share them in a many more accessible ways.

Started a new blog

Hey fellow Androiders!
From today, I am starting a blog called "mod snips" in which I will be giving basic and advanced understanding of Android and its components. I will also be doing product reviews and new gadget thoughts! If you are a Android enthusiast just like me, you should visit the page right away at *mod snips again* For those of you who are still reading and didn't visit the blog, I will update the blog daily ATLEAST once a day and maybe more times. This is a request to tell your other friends who are also android freaks. I will also make videos in the near future. Please share this! Peace out.
Closed. This doesn't pertain to the HTC One V, nor (more importantly) is it polite to advertise a different site here. If you want, you can Suggest Content to the xda portal or look up how to apply for it a writing position.

[BOUNTY]Working AOSP source code for Galaxy S6/ Note5(N920/G920/G925/G928)

We all know that if someone makes a source code for our device (F/I/S/K/T/L/W8/FD) It will be easier to port it to non-international variants.
And I think that porting from one device to another will be easier too.
Ex:-Note5 to S6 to S6e to S6e+
You have to pay after we get a working source code. Now, you just have to post how much you can pay to the respective developer.
I have seen many pledge threads(almost every thread i have seen about bounty) making a big breakthrough in porting in XDA.
MODERATOR NOTE: Bounties are not encouraged on XDA, however some have resulted in needed breakthroughs.
A legitimate bounty should be started by someone other than the recipient, preferably an established member of the community. The recipient should be aware of and endorse the bounty and agree to its purpose. A set goal should be announced and totals kept current. No money should be collected up front but pledged to be sent to the recipient's donation link once goal is reached. Please also note bounties should be for significant critical development projects, not to get your favorite developers a new toy....that is what their DONATE link is for.
Please stay within these guidelines.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

By making this bounty I mean no disrespect for free-time developers but I think this will speed up the porting of AOSP based roms for our Galaxy S6 devices.
Some of the many examples available, if you still doubt this you can google for yourself.

Implementing a Crowdfunding feature

Devoloping mods for Android is quite time consuming.
I just had the idea that xda could implement or cooperate with crowdfunding platforms (e.g. patreon) to give devlopers the option and actively support them to make their hobby into a bit more like that so they could spend more time on their projects and there creating content of higher quality.
I'm thinking of something like this:
A Developer creates a project thread with information on what he wants to develop and stes a specific amount of money which he would need to develop just the mod for a specific amount of time
Users liking the project could spend some money to the dev
If the dev reaches the goal he has the possibility to work only on this project /
If he doesn't reach the goal users could get their money back or could still spend it to the dev and the dev can still work this project but with less time dedicated for it.
Maybe this idea doesn't go along with the principles of xda but IMO it wouldn't change the community spirit and it's worth thought.
Just no. Talk of money in exchange for promises of work is not allowed on xda. See rule 8 here, https://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?a=81
Any type of fundraising is not allowed on xda actually.
Promoting a paid app or theme is one thing on xda, but even then, a free version must be available to xda members too. And selling Roms or kernels is a hard no.
So no Sir, your idea won't be happening on xda. Sorry.
And thread closed. :good:

Question OnePlus continuing to alienate the entire developer community

OnePlus's broken promises are leaving developers angry and enthusiasts upset
It's violating the GPL, silently killed its developer device seeding program, and broke arguably every promise made at its 2019 Open Ears Forum
www.androidpolice.com
This, especially should see their phones blocked until they follow the rules correctly:
Android runs on Linux, in case you didn't know, which means every Android device runs the Linux kernel. In most cases, this requires customizing the kernel slightly to work on different hardware, and anyone that does that is required to honor the Linux kernel's GNU General Public License agreement, or GPL. Among other things, it requires that the "source" for the kernel — the code required to build it as written out before its compiled in a way a computer can use — be made available for other developers to see, use, and base their own further modifications on top of.
While there's no hard requirement I can tell regarding the required timeliness of kernel source releases, OnePlus is at least breaking the spirit of the GPL by being so late, and it's definitely breaking it when the source is unavailable or missing parts that are required for it to work. At its Open Ears Forum in 2019, OnePlus promised the "on-time" release of kernel sources for all builds, including Open Betas — more on that later.

Its not maybe GPL violation, its IS GPL violation! Thanks OPPO
I'm hardly surprised. OnePlus abandoned a lot of their promises when they did the merger, and I don't really expect them to deliver on them now.
I guess that means a Pixel is the only option until Google too decides to kill customization. They're already hardening Safetynet which looks like they're getting ready to kill off development.
