Strange Battery Problem - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi XDA Community, long time no see
I have a strange problem with my Galaxy Tab S 8.4 4G (SM-T705Y)...
I upgraded to Lollipop, decided I didn't like it and then downgraded back to Kit Kat...
Since doing so, I'm now experiencing strange problems with my battery...
After fully charging it to 100% and then using it for only a few hours, the battery reportedly goes flat but after rebooting the battery is back up to, say, 30%.
Without charging it, I keep using it, but then it goes flat again really fast - and again, after rebooting, the battery is back up to, say, 15%.
I upgraded back to Lollipop to see if the problem continues but I get numerous hours use out of the [same] battery.
I would prefer not to use Lollipop as I cannot [easily] install the Xposed Framework.
I've tried searching around for solutions, but I can only find dissimilar issues.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Puppet Test Pilot

Did you try battery calibration?
https://www.androidpit.com/how-to-calibrate-the-battery-on-your-android-device
Also wipe cache/dalvik.

Hi Starlord, thanks for your message.
I tried a couple of different apps that were for battery calibration (one with and one without root) but not the method or the app in the link. And I'm pretty sure I wiped cache/dalvic on one of the occasions I re-flashed. But I don't think I tried the two options together.
I'll try in the morning and let you know how I go.
Cheers,

same happen with me. you must resolder the connection between the battery and the board. if you still have warranty you can bring to samsung service center and ask them to resolder the connection.

Hi, Sorry for the belated update.
I finally got around to re-flashing my tablet.
I made sure to wipe cache/dalvik and then after rooting I installed then ran the 'Battery Calibration' app.
As directed, I made sure the battery was 100% charged when I calibrated.
Then I used it until it went flat and shut off, I got a few hours use.
After rebooting the battery said 20%.
So the problem doesn't seem as bad as before but it is still occurring.
I'm quite sure the problem is not hardware related because it doesn't occur at all when the tablet is running Android Lollipop.
If anyone has any further advice it will be greatly appreciated but I think I will just go back to running Lollipop.
Cheers

There's only one real fix for your battery, but unfortunately means you need to open your tablet by removing the back cover, unplug the battery and wait a few minutes.
Put everything back together and it should be fixed.

Going in a different direction, there are no issues installing xposed on your device.
Maybe you should be asking how to do that rather than taking backward steps.

This worked for me.. just try to drain your battery.. then remove your battery.. then reattach charge it fully then boot up

[Q] Hardware defect causing battery drain?

Hi,
about a month ago, I experienced a sudden increase in battery drain (consistently 5% / hour). First, I thought I might have one of the usual wakelock problems and thus reinstalled everything. The problem didn't go away. Until now I have done the following things to solve it, none of which worked:
flashed all official ROMS from 4.02 to 4.1.2, different custom ROMs, different kernels
didn't install anything or set up an account for sync
tried two different SIM cards; or none at all
left the phone in flight mode
bought a new original extended battery from Samsung
I didn't see any unusual wakelocks or activity in BetterBattery stats in any of those configurations. The battery just drains without any activity; with "Phone idle" being shown at the top of the battery drain list.
My last idea is a hardware defect. Fortunately, I am still under warranty, but just want to make sure I tried everything - It's gonna be pretty tough anyways to convince the seller that there is an actual defect. Is there anything else I could try? Did any of you ever face a similar problem?
Thanks for your help!
If you do go the route of calling the manufacturer, I wouldn't say "about a month ago, I experienced a sudden increase in battery drain". I would think it's more plausible that the phone came with a defect than just all of a sudden developed a defect on it's own one day.
Well, since I bought it about 10 months ago, that would seem rather strange, don't you think?

That a sudden defect in the device would cause a battery drain you hadn't experienced in the previous 9 months? Strange is one of the words I would use to describe that theory, for sure.
hows your data/phone signal? has the quality changed? maybe you changed your brightness or started using autobrightness? is the phone spending quality tine in deep sleep? are you using the facebook app? have you tried trinity kernel?

It's all in the first post - the drain occurs even if nothing is installed on the phone, the phone is in flight mode, has no simcard inserted - and all of that with different roms and kernels and even a new battery. I really don't know what else to suspect other than some broken component, given that I had perfectly good battery life all through the previous 9 months...
If I read the word Trinity on more time I'm gonna scream.

So to follow up on this: I returned my phone to the store I bought it in, they sent it to their local licensed repair shop and about a week later I got it back repaired under warranty. The battery drain is gone now, though I didn't get any details on what was actually broken. Moral of the story - if you have an inexplicable battery drain that cannot be fixed by anything it might just be defective hardware!

Of course I asked...but as I said they didn't do it themselves in the shop but sent it out to be repaired. The repair shop letter only said "replaced defective part, testrun OK.". So I guess I'll never know...

Sudden Charging Problems

This started last night. My galaxy nexus is around a year and a half old. Last night the phone started not charging with any wall plug including connecting to to multiple ac and computer outlets with multiple cables. I have used a new battery too and it is not working. I tried updating my kernel and that wont work. I moved the usb pin up and still nothing. My only solace is that it will charge while turned off. But VERRRRYYYY slowly. Thanks for your help.
Edit: The battery when off does not actually charge but the charging screen gets shown

I bet if you make a nandroid backup using TWRP 2.6 and then try to copy it to your pc it will not copy. This is how I found out TWRP 2.6 was causing USB issues. Now that I am back on 2.5 all is fine.
Nah it's not TWRP problem
I'm using 2.4 but still having exactly same problem
I guess it's charging port related problem

Just 3 days ago I couldn't get my phone to charge through USB or AC outlet, I thought it was kernel related so tried flashing other kernels and that didn't fix it. I wanted to flash back to stock to see if that fixed it but couldn't cause I wanted to keep a nandroid backup on my PC in case my sdcard got wiped, I tried all day to copy my nandroid to my PC and it would never copy more than 8mb, the small files so I finally thought to change TWRP back to 2.5 and make a new nandroid and BAM it worked and my phone started charging again. Weirder things have happened and the truth is sometimes stranger than fiction! lol
So maybe it was caused from restoring TWRP 2.6 nandroids or something related all I know is this was true in my case. May not happen to everyone but i have seen others with these same issues recently.

There is something with TWRP 2.6 that triggers it, maybe restoring a nandroid that was made with 2.6 did it. I don't know, all I know is 2.5 fixed all my issues.

So I called Google warranty to claim it to get it fixed and have the RMA all set up with a shipping label but now that I have it fixed I am not sure what to do, should I go ahead and send it anyway or not. My warranty was going to expire the next day so I caught it just in time. If I send it will it renew my warrenty? Should I send it just in case there is something wrong hardware related? I been fighting with these issues for the last 3 days but now my GNex is like new again. I can sure use some advice.

I was running LiquidSmooth 2.6 and upgraded to 2.7 while running the A.S.K.P kernel at the time, like I said I thought it was kernel related then tried different kernels and it didn't work so my only other choice was to return to stock, I tried many different charging cables and I started to think it was hardware related until I tried copying my nandroid to my PC and couldn't do it. So then my only choice was to try making a new nandroid with a different recovery and then everything was back to normal. Sorry to hear your issue isn't as easy as this but maybe if someone else has the same issue as me this might help. There seems to be an issue with TWRP 2.6 and nandroids.
I am running CM 10.1 and the most recent franco build for 4.2.2 . I charged it last night all night while off and the battery went from 11% to wont even boot. So charging says it is working but is not.

Actually when I had my issue with charging, the same thing occurred, I could only charge when phone was turned off. I have 2 batteries with a charging dock for the spare and it was the same with both batteries. But like i said my phone is back to normal. Does anyone know if I send it back for warranty repair will it extend me a new warranty? Also since my phone is fine now, if i send it what will be their reaction if they see nothing wrong with it? Sorry don't mean to hijack your thread but you are describing the same issues I had. I hope you have the luck I had.

[Q] Battery problem

So this is the fastest way how I can introduce to you my problem - please open Attachments and see my battery history. My phone just back from the service repair. They told me that the battery has been replaced. Maybe it was big mistake that after I get my compact in hands I rooted him and restored the old ROM and now I'm worring that I just have broken next battery. Is that possible? or my phone wasn't repaired...?

Just flash a stock rom and see what happens. Maybe some combination of your old features is bad for batterys.
I have exactly the same problem. Sending of for repair tomorrow. It seemed to start when I started using Google voice but when I stopped using it the problem stayed so I think it's unrelated.
I ran into problems after installing Lollipop, now my z1c won't charge like it used to. I had it charging last night for 10 hours and it went from 11-50%, have no idea what happened. Did factory reset and even installed from the scratch again with no luck. Also I sometimes get the text power is going faster than you're charging, etc. Tried three different chargers and cables.

Did you experienced any water damage?
If you're asking from me,no I had a bootloop first trying to flash rooted Lollipop, don't know if that damaged something. But I've had hundreds of bootloops before so my phone should have been dead long time ago.
Lähetetty minun D5503 laitteesta Tapatalkilla
Finally succeeded charging to 100%,only able to do so by turning off phone while charging. Calibrated the battery and installed Better battery stats to see are there some bugs eating the battery like crazy.

Yeah, solved the sudden drops. Still don't get as much life as when I originally got the phone but I think thats due to apps syncing too often etc.

So you are using kitkat... I am having the sudden drop issue in lollipop and some other people also facing it only lollipop .. I think its software issue in lollipop
Yep on kit kat. I thought it was software originally but it did it in recovery and also after being repaired in pc companion. There's several people on here with the same issue, I had an online chat sessionand they said send it in for repair.
Facebook and Google Play Services Keep Alive permission -> OFF helped things a lot in Lollipop, using the App Ops app from Play Store. Still getting Facebook notifications just fine.
Not sent by me.
Yea.
Syncing, checking mail automatically, keeping Wi-Fi on all the time.
I don't know better methods to get rid of battery woring long hours.
ONLY checking IMAP mail account discharged my phone over the night completely.

An hard trouble that is driving me mad.

I have my G3 since September 2015. Never had problems, never had complains on nothing. More than one month ago I changed battery cause was definitively dead. All was again okay BUT one night the telephone random rebooted and when done, WiFi button stucked on "Turning WiFi on" but not connecting. It affects Bluetooth too.
Of course I tried removing battery first, then hard reset, then rooting for trying a new ROM. None of them solved the WiFi problem, so I supposed that maybe the mudule broke for some reason and I accepted it looking for repair. So I keep Fulmics ROM for a while, until one day the phone started to consume random battery and the CPU overheating. Looking at battery stats, 70% of drain was caused by "Android OS". I tried to close some apps, turning to plane mode, clean cache/dalvik cache. Nothing. So I tried many stocks ROM and every of them got the same problem even with no application installed after flashing!
Then I downloaded CM 12.1 and... WOW. Wifi and Bluetooth were again operating. Can you feel my happiness?
I downloaded all my apps, restored my backups, was finally a new life for my f***ing phone. But...
... No. Because just after locking the screen once, the phone went to a strange "freeze" that only battery removal was able to unlock.
Since then, every custom ROM I tried doesn't even boot after flashing and every stock ROM random overheat the phone or stucks in boot loop after flashing. Even after TOT flash, all the problems told in this post did not solved.
What the hell can I do for return to use my phone without crying every day?
I swear I will "offer" a beer to the one will solve even the half of these troubles. Thanks all.

My LG G3 D855 keeps restart (not bootloop)

i have my LG G3 D855 for about 1.5 year now. i had cyanogenmod for a year. Sometimes, i mean once at the month it has been crashing, you know lagging for 2 seconds and restarting but i had the same problem on diffrent phones so for me it was nothing. Last week it started to keeps restarting, i dont mean bootloop. It started to crushing. sometimes i could wright the PIN, sometimes it crushed when rebooting. i've changed software many times, did hard reset, even used flash tool to flash kdz of original version of my LG and its still being the same what should i do? Please guys halp me!
Sounds like a battery problem. Get a multi meter and test the battery voltage across the positive and negative terminals, it should be the battery's voltage rating to make the phone boot properly.

I had a similar issue in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/help/lg-g3-freezing-restarting-staying-boot-t3513239 but my issue turned out to be hardware related as replacing the battery did not aid (probably logic board issue).
Same here.
Started happening with Android 5.
Upgrading to 6 didn't change a thing.
Replacing the battery to a new original one neither.
Resetting neither, removing or changing SIM or SD card... Looks like it's an internal HW problem

I bought a new phone instead since my warranty was void already. The repair costs would probably have been ~ 200€ anyway (150€ for a motherboard + repair costs ~50€).
