Hello,
I would like some insight on a problem that I am having with a Lenovo Vibe Shot Z90.
I just bought the phone two months ago during a trip I took to Singapore. It worked fine for about a month before the problem started. The phone never fell down, into water, overheated or anything like that. The problem started suddenly, without an apparent reason. Alas, the local Lenovo branch refused to honor the warranty, claiming that they only take in "EU models".
The problem is that the phone will not charge while it is turned on. It does not even "see" the USB cable getting plugged in. If I turn it off however, it charges just fine, all the way up to 100%. I also noticed that the battery drains faster, for no apparent reason, without any apps running. It most definitely is not a software problem, I did a hard reset at first, it did not work and then, just to be sure, I even flashed the latest official ROM using QFIL.
Do you reckon there is any possibility that the problem is caused by the battery, or is it definitely mainboard-related? If there is any chance that replacing the battery will solve the problem, I could order one online and I am competent enough to replace it myself, but I do not want to get into an ordeal if there is not even a remote chance that it would fix the problem.
Any suggestions welcome.

Yes. A bad charger was the first thing that I considered, so I tried another 2 A charger and then even tried it with a 50 A desktop PSU. It made no difference. There is no current flowing from the charger (PSU) to the phone at all once it is on. When I turn it off, it draws about 1.25 A, which is pretty normal.

You have to read about "USB PowerDelivery".
Alone PSU current efficiency has no effect on USB devices charging current.
Amount of current that the end device is able to absorb, is defined on the resistors (voltage dividers) which feeds the D+ and D- lines.

I am aware that the device would not ever (normally) draw more current than it is supposed to, regardless of the PSU used.
I did check some of the resistors at the time before my original post and they did seem to fall within spec. Besides, the phone would charge normally once powered down, so I doubt that it was such a simple problem as a resistor. Alas, this is an old thread and long ago I decided that the phone was not worth my time anymore, so I threw it away and thus I cannot recheck the circuit again. This will hopefully be helpful to people with similar problems in the future.
I think this is a software issue. Please tell me what version of ROM and baseband you have?
I was playing a lot with different roms, and in some cases I had the same issue. Eg when phone was chargeed from PC it was very slow.

After a second charge, still working. And the it stopped. No led when i plug it. No charge, no power.
I tried a different usb cable. Then another charger. Still nothing.

As far I know, MAX77819 is charging the battery.
Using multimeter measure selected (PINK) test point and read if voltage vs GND is about 1.8V

I'm not sure I will open the phone now as it is under warranty.
I'm also not sure that i would be able to open the phone as I don't see how to open it !
It 's kind of weird that nobody else seems to have this kind of charging problem. Bad luck I guess.

I have exactly the same problem. Phone was purchased from tinydeal. Replaced ROM with international version because not been able to run Facebook and other applications. Working perfect for 1 month. Then suddenly stoped charging. When plugged indicator shows charging but percentage charged droped.
I was not able to use warranty because I cannot send products with lithium batteries internationally using regular mail.
The phone was at two service shops. They problem is this chip which should be responsible for charging is very difficult to replace. They could not repair it. Now I have ordered a motherboard from aliexpress for 70$. When the phone broke there were no options for purchasing motherboard.

I had the same problem after my first boot. I bought in Aliexpress. My solution was (more or less) easy.
I don't know why, powerful charger didn't work, but my old 5v-500mA worked 30 mins after connected. Once I had 10% battery I used stock charger and thats all.... very strange... Probably something wrong in battery..... who knows.... I hope this helps next time.

Yeah, sorry I probably should have been more specific but I dont know the exact name for them. haha
It's like the dock "travel" charger for just the battery, not the battery connected to the phone.
I havent been able to find something decent (crappy charging, made in china).
Ok a little update for those interested.
I ended up buying some cheap (REALLY cheap) charger off ebay not expecting too much but just experimenting.
The charger itself looks something like this:

The 2 metal prongs connect to + and -; the charger is able to read which is the + and which is the - no matter how you set the battery in there. The bottom part that pushes the battery toward the prong is extendable or you can flip it 180 if you have a really small battery.
-Flashing red and blue light means charging
-Dull red light while plugged in means fully charged
-Dull red light while not plugged in but with battery set up means the pins are set up correctly on the terminals
NOTE: do not take batter off/put battery on while the charger is plugged in. It can ruin the battery.

Now for the review and my experience.
Pros:
-Fits any battery, interchangeability of pins (differentiating + and -) means you can fit any battery really
-Has a side USB port so you can charge a battery and plug in your USB cord to the phone and charge it at the same time
-Voltage input is 110-220V so (with an adapter) you can theoretically (will test this summer) plug this charge straight into an european plug or north american plug.
-No problems so far with over charging; Charger stops charging the battery when it is full
-Has a light to tell you when the battery is done charging and when you have the pins connected correctly to the battery
-Compact; Small and plug folds up into unit.
-Charges a fully dead battery quickly.
Cons:
-No instructions when I first received this product (i know what you're thinking, how hard could it be to just charge a battery but I was reluctant to rely on the self detecting terminal feature)
-While charging, the light on the unit (the one i posted/bough) flashes red and blue like cop lights and is very bright so it might be a problem if you are plugging it in overnight in a bedroom. Also this is a normal function of the charger but i thought it was malfunctioning so they sent a new unit but then figured out its normal.
-Looks cheap
-Dont know how long it will last for (really cheap so buying another one isnt a problem)
-Noticed that after i pull a battery off the charger and use it the phone states it is at 99% (undercharged) although if i try to bump charge a fully charged battery it wont charge more. This could be a problem with my battery/phone/etc.
-Nothing else really
So final verdict on this product:
Its a great, affordable charger; works great if you are traveling and need to charge an extra battery. Will fit the Incredible 2 extended batteries and technically virtually any battery. Its pretty easy to use once you know what the color lights mean and how to set a battery up.
If anyone has any questions or want more pictures of this product just reply in this thread. Hope this helped out anyone looking for a product like this.
i just wanted to jump on here and say rthank you for posting this. i just oredered one for myself. i droid incredible 2 usb port took a dump on me and now have no way to charge it now without taking it apart and replacing it. thanks again for this info. it will hold me over till i am ready to fix the usb port or get my upgrade. i will just the ftp app from the play store to transfer my files till then.
so just an update. just recieved this device today in the mail. only cost less than four dollars and is working perfectly. thanks again for this post.

mine did the same thing just a few days ago only issue I"ve ever had with the phone...I actually ordered this same one off of amazon about 10 mins before I saw this, lol. Glad it works well
Ive been having this issue with my GNex since I got it. I believe the previous owner had the same issue which is why I got a great deal.
When plug the phone in it will show a lightning bolt through the icon in the corner and the lock screen says that it is charging. When I go to the battery screen, however, it always says "not charging". Most importantly, the phone doesn't charge.
It will connect to the computer via usb cable.
When I first got it I found the micro-usb jack was all mangled, pins were all bent. I assumed this was the problem and I replaced the jack with a new one. The problem did not go away. Not only that but I built a cradle charger that uses the pogo pins and that ALSO doesn't work. I do not believe it is software related because this problem has persisted over major updates. Its running stock 4.2
Has anyone seen this problem before???

I do. Same story for me. Bought it used, Opened up, fully charged, used it, loved it. Two days and i put it to charge overnight. Next morning, phone is powered off. But connected, and it says its charging. I have the exact same issue. Changed the USB charging module ( thought about making a POGO cradle) , bought new batterys ( even a hyperion 3800) , wall charger for the batterys.
Issue is not gone. Im using the phone at the moment with a PowerPack 2200mah . So it thinks it is connected to sumthin and not using the battery. Anoying but it lets me use my phone. Sometimes it charges to 20-30% , 60% once . But the issue is there. I've read a lot and i think is not the charging module itself but the MAX17040 fuel gauge chip that reads the SoC on the batterys.
Anyone else?
My old roommate had this problem and sent hers in for a replacement.

Sorry, you replaced the jack of the wall charger or the microusb module inside the gnex? If i understood correctly and the wall charger had a jack with bent pins, that means that almost certainly either the bent pins damaged the microusb module of the gnex or the damage to the pins was maybe caused while charger was connected to the phone. The fact that the phone still connects to the charger still doesn't mean there is no damage, it could be just a pin, the "wrong" pin, to be damaged.
Replacing the microusb module is not something too difficult with the gnex and it's not too expensive either. You could think about looking for a spare part online and replace it.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I replaced the microusb module inside the phone.
My current strategy is to use an external battery charger and two batteries.
I think this is software related. It just happened to my Nexus 4 today. I rebooted it and it fixed itself.

Pretty sure its not software related. I had this problem in 4.1 and now I have it in 4.2. Unless there is some more basic software that is not updated with the OS.

I eventually gave up and went to the verizon store where i briefly explained to the lady "it only charges to a certain level no matter the battery" and she said alright no problem and had my a like new replacement 2 days later.
in one of the above threads someone tried replacing the microusb board and it resulted in no change.
hopefully this gets sorted out soon.

I've seen one or two of those and many others but they are all somewhat different than my issue. My phone doesn't seem to charge at all. It doesn't start and stop prematurely, it just thinks it's starting but I have yet to see the charge go up while its plugged in.
All,
I have two P5210 - 10.1 tablets.
Charging the 1st one with a certain charger - very fast, no issues
Charging the 2nd one with the same charger - very slow (but it charges)
Please note that I did replace the internal USB-charge-cable recently of the 2nd device because before that the tablet
did not charge at all.
Because of this I did not use the device for many months so the battery was really really empty.
How slow does the 2nd tablet charge? Well, using the charger mentioned above the battery went from 0% to 17%
in about 3-4 hours ... then I charged it overnight (7 hours or so) and it was around 28%.
Of course I do suspect the new USB-charge-cable being the issue but how does that impact this?
I mean: it charges, or it does not; If it charges then it must be connected correctly (it's hard to do it wrong).
Any ideas??

You have 2 identical tablets. why don't swap the battery to see any difference ?
Use the USB tester, current should be 1.5-1.7Amps, voltage should be 5.1--5.2 Volts with good cable, charger, usb charging port.
If below that readings, either bad charger or bad cable or bad USB port. The last resource is cracked battery connector, this one require skill and magnified glass to see the solder joints . This battery connector is prone to crack and is the major problem of charging. If swapping a good battery and problem persists, this is where you should look

I have Gt P5200 that couldn't charge or power on. Removed that part showed by the green arrow and it started to show the charging animation. Who knows the name? I want to check online if I can buy it. I need your help.
Note: the part removed is in the charging circuitry area. It would get hot when on charge, but nothing would display on the screen, and the tab couldn't power on.

Thank you so much for your help. It looks like the part is tricky. I may order both the ic power supervisor and the fet silicon.
I am not sure why the details on the physical part are not found online. Is it of any help if I provide the printed details here? I don't want to use a wrong part. I am afraid it might get irreparable.

Troubleshoot to component levels is not recommended as it's hard to find components and you have to know the schematic of the board.
It's best to find a broken screen tablet or working mainboard or not working mainboard to swap components like this

If you do it for fun, it's OK. There're a lot of new LTE/Wfi with affordable prices, like SM-P605V, around $150.

What do you mean by for fun? I need to swap the components and have the tab fixed. 30 USD for the mainbord is not much for the tab you showed me.
Maybe you meant the mainboard to buy might have the same issue
Fixing the mainboard just by guessing as you do, probability is 50/50 when buying another not working mainboard.
If you're lucky, it has different problem. Bad luck if it has the same problem as yours.
As in US, nobody bothers to fix these old model's mainboards because new one is not much expensive. With $150, one can buy a Note 2014 SM-P605 or Tab A 2016 SM-T580, or the Tab A 8.0 SM-T350 for only $80. However, I understand that other countries, they have no choice other than fixing whatever they have.

I just wanted to post a short topic letting other users know that there may be a charging issue with WW-5.17.44.68. A couple of days after updating to the most recent firmware I suddenly began having charging issues with my Zenfone 3 Deluxe special edition. Shortly after hooking up the factory charger I would receive this error message accompanied by the same alert sound that Amber Alerts use. The only way I was able to get the phone to charge at all was to roll back to my pre WW-5.17.44.68 nandroid. Trying different chargers with different cables made zero difference. The error is dead on as pulling out the USB cord you can clearly feel it is quite hot. Ignoring or missing this error will most likely guarantee a fried charge port (minimal)! Immediately after installing my backup all issues went away. I am currently charging with the factory charger and cable now without heat/error.

That's rough. I haven't bothered with the update because it's too much of a hassle right now to go to stock recovery and update. I think your best bet would be to stay on your backed up firmware and wait out the Oreo update (which should be soon as well.)

After feeling how hot the USB port/plug got I am in no hurry to try it again! I could even smell the charge board heating up. That is quite a gut-wrenching smell when it comes to a phone costing as much as this one. I too hope that it isn't a widespread issue.
I completed a full wipe before installing the firmware and tried multiple USB cords and chargers after. The only thing that fixed the issue was downgrading. That leaves the firmware as the main suspect which is why I decided to post my findings.
If anyone is considering updating PLEASE have a recent nandroid FIRST.

I did update to the newest firmware and I am charging using Zenfone 2 chargers, I just checked it out and it doesn't seem too hot.... maybe it applies only to QuickCharge chargers....
though I do have an issue that when my phone is locked (aka screen is turned off, phone is running... sleep mode) I have some screen flickering... the whole screen flashes white for just one second before turning off again... kinda annoying as it also wastes a lot of battery

If I recall correctly the Zenfone 2 charger supports the same range of voltages. 5-9-12 volts with varying amperage.
Your screen issues could quite possibly be caused by a rogue app. I've noticed using the "Always On" feature my phone will flash white from time to time. Not the entire screen mind you, just the clock being shown with full brightness for one cycle. If you have TWRP installed it would be worth a backup/wipe to see if it is indeed software. Good news time for everyone except me! After charging the phone twice the error message has shown its ugly face once again. So it seems that my phone is actually to blame :'-( I've cleaned the USB-C port with some contact cleaner sprayed onto a small piece of folded paper. So far it seems to have done the trick. USB-C is great for ease of use but not so great for keeping debris out.
I have found the actual cause of my issues. It's an unusual one so I thought I should share. It turns out that an old florescent table lamp I recently started using again basically turned itself into an EMP device. All of the electromagnetic interference feeding back through the surge protector has caused both my phone charger and my 6 bay 18650 (vaporizer) battery charger to malfunction. After unplugging the lamp the overheating issue has stopped. The phone charger no longer quick charges but I'll take that over a dead phone any day! The issue with my 6 bay charger, if you were curious is that I have to power cycle it each time i want to establish a bluetooth connection now. Its crazy some of the curveballs life can throw your way!

greetings from germany. Pretty sure this belongs to "Questions and Answers", if not - please hit me and move it.
I am confronted with a, in my opinion, strange problem regarding my P-601 Samsung Note 10.10 2014 Edition.
I will try to provide every action I took and what I figured out so far that noone that wants to help will need his crystal ball. But the first actions are about a year ago, so forgive me if I cant remember exactly.
Device: Samsung Tablet Note 10.1 2014 Edition (P-601)
Problem: Charging slow AF but lives, can be turned on, can be loaded via USB. (But more power is drained while using than can be delivered by charging = dies sooner or later while beeing used)
OS: LineAge OS
First I thought, EASY - get a new battery, done. Wrong.
I ordered a new battery, a (2) "vhbw" battery for "T8220E" - same mentioned on the original Samsung battery.
This is a year ago, In my belief I did get the tablet to run, and charge- but had the same problems regarding the charging speed. Slow AF - but I am not sure! Life happend, things came inbetween so I did put everything aside. Now I want to use it in my home gym, so thats why I came up here.
My next suggestion was that the charge electronic maybe the problem, so I ordered a new one, built it in. Didnt change anything. The (1) Original battery, is still charging slow af.
The new battery, doesnt do anything! If the (2) "vhbw" battery is built in, I am not able to turn the tablet on OR charge it. Its just a brick with this battery.
So what did I do? I ordered a new battery, from a well known german company trading parts like this, a (3) "original samsung battery". Guess what, the tablet does nothing.
So i thought, maybe your new charging electronic is the problem. So I put the (1) Original Tablet battery in again, and well - it runs, can be turned on and can be charged (slow af).
So the charging electronic is fine. Display is also fine.
I did confirm this several times by changing the batterys in and out, the new batterys (2) and (3) are "dead", the (1) original battery runs.
Right now I am stuck. It seems that my Tablet is blocking any battery besides his original one.
Note: I cant access Recovery Mode with battery (2) and (3). Its really dead. They where also charged atleast an half an hour, just in case they were delivered "really dead at 0%", which would be new to me because most devices or batterys come with atleast 25% battery status.
Note2: Yes I did use a ****load of power adapter and cables all in combination, same result.
Any help is really appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hello, I came here looking for recommendations for a new battery for my SM-P600. Could you tell me where you ordered your OEM one from?
As far as your problem, do you have a multi-meter? There are very cheap basic ones if you don't. Anyway, you can test the seemingly dead batteries with it to determine if they are in fact dead, or something else is going on.
Secondly, do you happen to have a hobby charger? With these, you can charge pretty much any battery L-ion or other. You can also do a drain test with most of these to determine the capacity of a battery. That is all I can really think of thus far. Determine if the batteries are dead. Oh one more thing you could do with the multi-meter is test the current being applied to the battery. I believe there are some free apps in the Google Play Store that can also tell you the electrical current going into the battery. Perhaps by doing this you can determine if the problem is something in the tablet itself. If I think of anything else, I will let you know.

Funny that you say that with the "dead battery", because I just had the same thought 10 Minutes ago. Those batterys were manufactured years ago I guess and were just sitting cozy in their boxes, I guess they are deep discharged. (hope this vocab is correct).
I have pretty much everything that is measured "useless" in a normal household, but sadly no multi-meter (no more). If those batterys are deeply discharged, it should be possible to be reanimated with very low charging power. The lowest I should have is a USB 2.0 Port on my pc (which were it is connected right now) or a oldschool dumb power bank without any intelligence).
I will keep this updated.

It worked. About an hour connected to a USB 2.0 port of my computer, and it just popped back into live. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!
There have been reports of the plugs of replacement batteries for these tablets not fitting properly.
Also bad solder joints at the battery connector.
And a certain behaviour i oberved myself, requiring certain custom roms or chargers in case of my P605:
In soft-off state tablet will charge at 0,5A instead of 2A max
and
When powered on it will charge at full power until the screen switches off and it enters standby. Then no charge at all.
