So, I'm trying to get a Nexus 7 (2013). My 2012 is slow, and I'm a big fan of the 7" screen size, not wanting to go any bigger. The first one, the center 1/3 of the touch screen (a vertical area going from the top of the screen to the bottom) didn't work at all. Second one, no wifi at all. Third one (the one currently on my lap) has a combination of the issues. There's a 1 sq cm area where the touchscreen doesn't work, a stuck pixel, and wifi disconnects every time the device's screen turns off, then won't reconnect until a reboot.
I know there's some hardware issues with this device, but my god, really? Two used and one "new" and I haven't gotten a good one yet? I've tried running other roms to fix the wifi issues, no go, stock works best (which is still not well). I've tried the touchscreen fixes located on here and YouTube, I haven't tried any self-help repairs for wifi yet.
Should I keep trying? Give up? Other than the Nvidia Shield I can't find another 7" tablet that's as fast as this one. I bought a 2015 Kindle Fire, but it's as slow as my 2012 N7 and has a worse screen.
Any help would be appreciated!

I had the same problem I traded in my 2012 N7 for a 2013 N7 and it was terrible luckily I got it exchanged for a good one the difference is like night and day. Also you shouldn't write your 2012 N7 off just yet have you not tried the M Kernel? Flash that and with a bit of tweaking your 2012 should fly again. Also IMO the 2012 has the better GPU so slightly better for gaming and I prefer the screen dimensions. Good luck.

Id try taking a look at the LCD ribbon cable. A lot of people are having issues that were caused by this ribbon cable becoming loose. Remove the back late and inspect the orange ribbon cable that runs over the battery. make sure to disconnect the battery before changing anything though.

Now that you had the A100 for a while any problems

Now that I have had this tab for a month. Its now starting to act up. Browser force closing, touch screen can be difficult to navigate (too sensitive) it will often open apps when swiping through screens, and overall performance is getting really slow. I have added a memory card to free up some memory but doesn't help. So I'm wondering what the community experience for us that has had the device for awhile.

I really like my A100 overall. Three things that are starting to kill me about it are:
1: Battery life; I've attempted to remove all/some/certain apps, turn off syncing, set sync long, turn wifi/gps off, remove "bloat", turn screen brightness low etc.. For the last two weeks I've tried a lot of different methods to save battery. Still, last night I went to sleep with it at 60-70%(on my latest method to save battery) and woke up with it completely drained. Might need to exchange it I guess.
2: Viewing angles. Thought I could deal with it no problem. However, when I use it as an e-reader (or anytime is portrait) the viewing angles make it difficult to look at the screen for extended periods of time. I have to tilt the left side back more so I don't strain my eyes.
3: Live wallpapers; Many are unusable. I have 4 widgets total and only use 3 home screens. On many of the live wallpapers I use, the swiping of screens either is very laggy, or has a very obvious delay in the time I swipe to the time the screen actually moves.
Performance has started to get slightly worse, not too bad though. I have started to get force closes on some apps and the browser. May end up returning / selling this and get something else. Pity, I really like it other than the first two annoyances..I can live without live wallpaper.
Battery life is a sore point for me as I'm sure it is for everyone. The screen isn't great, but it's not bad enough to bother me much.
I haven't had any software problems fortunately, or at least not any that aren't common with the whole Honeycomb live beta that Google has been running all year. Hopefully ICS will fix a lot on the software side.
That being said, I'm coming from a Nook Color(with a Kindle Fire also considered). Since I paid in the same price range for this($189 on Black Friday) the trade offs as compared to the Nook/KF aren't too bad and at the end of the day I do like having a full tablet with out having to turn it into an ugly hack job(I'm especially looking at you Nook Color)
For $200, I'd say I got my moneys worth, and I might even say it's worth it for the $260 BestBuy is still selling them for, but anything higher, and I'd say it'd be too much to pay for this thing. It's not a high quality tablet, the screen and battery life seal the deal on that one, but it's definitely not the worst tablet I've seen out there. It's miles better than all the cheap Chinese crap tablets, but it doesn't to much to exceed the standards of the "upper crap" brands like Archos.
I'd say the thing is worth about $250.
For now, I think 7" is the sweet spot for tablets. (I previously owned a 10.1" Asus Transformer, which had great battery life and a beautiful screen but was awkwardly big/heavy).
And that said, the A100 is the best 7" tablet currently available (including the new 7" Galaxy Tab, simply because it lacks a microSD slot. I wouldn't trade my microSD slot for 3 more hours of battery life and an IPS screen, especially if the deal added $100+ bucks to the price.)
- I give the screen a B+ (I do wish it didn't solarize from the bottom viewing angle, but it's otherwise bright and clear.)
- Real world battery life, C+ (6 hours is fine enough in practice because I charge nightly, but it'd be awesome to have 12 hours--save me from bringing the charger on short trips, etc.)
- The industrial design I don't care at all about. I have it in the phenomenal Blurex leather case, so the lame blue plastic/silver swirl thing on the back is a non-issue to me.
Really, Acer made all the right compromises. My next tablet will probably be the Transformer 3 when it comes out in a year, hopefully it'll have 300 ppi screen and will dual boot Jelly Bean and Windows 8. If Windows developers embrace ARM , I think a Transformer 3 + laptop dock will mean I'll never buy another PC.
Until tablets can replace laptops (early 2013), a cheap but fullspeed 7" is a great device.
I've had mine for about 2 weeks and I have seen some slowdown when booting up and scrolling in the app drawer from time to time but most likely due to having installed so many apps. Battery has been better for me. I have my wifi to turn off when screen is off and also have a wifi toggle widget to turn off wifi when I'm playing a game or sometimes I just turn off wifi completely when I'm not using the tablet which only drains my battery about 1-2% per hour. Overall usage I would say I get the normal 5 hour mark. Viewing angle is not much an issue for me as I always look at the tablet straight on and its much sharper than my older Samsung tab 7. The only issue I still have is the screen not being responsive or some are saying too sensitive. There's a thread on this already. I'm hoping this will be fixed via software. This is my 3rd one however since my other 2 had wifi issues. I fixed one but it still had screen touch issue so I exchanged and all 3 was the same. So far I'm happy for the $248 I purchased it for. I bring this thing everywhere i go since it fits inside my jacket pocket.
Mainly battery life is the sore point for me.
The screen is more sensitive than my iDevices but nowhere as bad as my LG Evo phone was. A bit more sensitive than the Blackberry Playbook.
Disabling the capacitive home button was a must for me. I would hit it so many times when holding it in landscape view, it drove me crazy.
The screen, I agree with everyone else about the viewing angle from the bottom not being good.
Of course, there is always room for improvement. The hardware in the PB is great, especially the screen and battery life but the software is way lacking in comparison to Android.
At $250, it is a good tablet. I wouldn't pay more for it than that.
It's the perfect size and I take it almost everywhere.

I bought one.for my daughter and have been playing with it for 2 weeks now..Rooted it as soon as.I took it out of the box and installed a few root apps like ad free to keep her from clicking on ads.
For $250 I have to say I am pretty impressed. I have loaded it up with a bunch of educational apps as well as games. So far I have not had one force close on any app. Battery life is ok and WiFi is fastest device off same router as my dinc and t60.
I am not sure what you guys expect for 250, but if you can find any Android device that doesn't need.to be charged daily, then you aren't using it.

My thoughts exactly for the price it cant be beat. Very happy with the purchase. here is a screen cap of my a100 i never turn off wifi, this was with light usage. with regular use gaming/browsing for me I still get 8hrs.
For personal use the A100 is the perfect tablet, it easily fits in the inside pocket of a jacket, and despite complaints from others that the screen and battery life is not ideal, I think the screen is adequate and after 7 weeks I once had an empty battery. It is complete with Android 3.2, HDMI (works great as HTPC), 3.5mm audio connector, GPS, dual camera (not its strongest point), micro USB slave (missing USB host), Micro SD slot, and replacable battery. Upgrade to ICS is available next month. Moreover, it is much more affordable as similar products from its competitors.
Has anyone tried to use the tablet with it lying on any surface. Recently i discovered that with it on a bed or table lying flat the touch screen is practically unusable. Using a stylus for note taking is useless, it doesn't register every stroke and writing is broken up.

Yeah the touchscreen has some issues. If you lightly swipe the touchscreen on the browser it will zoom in I dunno why

If you must use the A100 while it's lying on a table or a bed, try turning it upside-down first. There is no backlight on the bottom edge, only on the top edge. Viewing from above the top edge, or flipping the A100 upside down and viewing from below, is much better that way. Not perfect, but better.
Another remedy is to get an easel case, so you can prop the A100 at a comfortable viewing angle.

Thanks I found that trick out from using a Viewsonic GTab. What I was explaining is that the tablet needs to be grounded to work properly. So basically if your not holding it the tablet struggles with registering your gestures. Whem laying it on a bed or table the tablet touch screen would be very sporadic.

This has mostly fixed the issue for me, still shows up every once in a while but after doing this fix there was a huge improvement for me.
WiFi keeps turning itself off every few minutes. checked all the settings and it still does it. none of my other Android devices do this, only the Tab 7"
after two months of use.
I'm very satisfied of this tab. No "problem" at all.
Battery life: is good if used well. Obviously could be better, but with a double core and a so large display is very good. It surprises me when i play HD games for long and i see almost no change in battery life.
Wifi: signal reception is good, no problem. Connection speed at my home is almost 1Mb/sec checked on tablet.
Display and touch: angle of sight is small for a tablet, but colors and luminosity is very good. Touch screen is very very sensible but i like it. With the screen saver the touch is perfect.
Performance: I'm agree with my colleagues about the live wallpaper. Sometimes they are too slow. The computing speed of this tab is very very good. Opening apps, photos and hd video is vey fast. It's definitely a fast tab
Camera: Is good enough. I've recently bought a Galaxy S 2 with a 8mp camera and I see the difference from the 5mpx of the A100 but is still capable of very high detailed photos.
Voip and VideoCalls: I use this two features a lot since I'm often away from home and both are very good. No lag at all. Video is clear and fluid, audio too. The microphone volume is low I think, but is not a problem if you can hold it closer to you.
Handling and Style: I can bring it inside a pocket and go wherever I want. Is not heavy, it doesn't need a separate bag to be kept with you. Is the perfect size in terms of mobility. The shape is cool and can be handled easily. Maybe the back of the cover would be better completely gray or black.
No problem apart from the fact that i cannot delete bloat cuz i dunno which system app will brick if i delete em, weight since i hold it in portrait mode often, FCs, lastly screen ratio. Prefer it wider and shorter.

If you mess up you should be able to just flash any of the update.zip in the rom thread to bring those files back. You will need to reroot if were already rooted.

WiFi is gone

I've had this tablet (SM-P600) for almost a year now & it has worked perfectly. Over the last week or so, the WiFi has been randomly turning on & off. Not just losing signal, but actually showing as off in the menus. As of this morning, wifi will not turn on at all. Just says "turning on" on the screen & sits. Never gets to the next screen showing all the open networks.
Everything is fully backed up so I went into recovery tonight. Did the full factory reset and wipe procedures. Tablet boots back like it is as supposed to, but wifi wont turn on when getting to that screen in the initial setup.
Tablet has been well cared in a case, not dropped, and not gotten wet. However I am still positive this is a hardware issue.
Any ideas for things I might try? Help!! Thx in advance
I've the same problem with my galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition SM-P605 :crying: Still haven't found solution
I am almost 100% certain this is some type of hardware problem. I tried flashing about 3 different ROM's and 3 different kernels, all of which successfully booted up. I finished by doing a 100% re-wipe (data & system included) & reinstalling a pure stock kernel and firmware. On every single revision, the words "turning on" would appear when clicking the WiFi option, but then it would get stuck. Message would eventually clear & I could continue using everything on the tablet . . . . . . . just no WiFi or Bluetooth functionality.
Final attempt was to gently remove the back cover. When lightly tapping around different points on the MoBo, the names of my local wireless networks would OCCASIONALLY appear. At one point they locked in & I really thought I had it. However, the whole thing disconnected again after a few minutes & I was back to square 1. :crying:
I never could figure out the perfect sweet spot to pinpoint the problem. My guess now is either a chip or ribbon cable that isn't seated properly, but I poked and pushed (gently!) on everything that was visible without removing any hardware other than just the back cover. Does anyone have a link to the layout of the motherboard that shows EXACTLY which piece is the WiFi/BT module? I did find an online disassembly tutorial with a random Google search, but for some reason they failed to identify this particular module.
Sorry for the long post, but I feel I am SO CLOSE to figuring this out once and for all. Just need a little more tech help to push across the goal line. Thanks!!

Sorry about that. It's just the initial release plain jane WiFi model. SM-P600
Update:
After a little more poking and prodding on the MoBo, I'm starting to see activity. Tablet will finally connect again, but will only hold the connection for 10-15 seconds and then drop back out. A few seconds later the cycle repeats.
I really wish I could find a good hi-res photo of the motherboard to help. HAS to be a simple loose connection, or maybe a not-so-good solder point somewhere???

never heard of 'em, is it a cheapo tablet? In my country there's a store of them (Allwinner 6.6" tablet with microSD slot, 2gb internal w/o bluetooth WIFI ONLY INTENDED FOR CASUAL GAMING, or should I call it kids only tablet, RM130 ($35))
That thing has a cheap plasticy housing, unneat design but has a pretty good performance (it plays dead trigger pretty well)

SM-P600 is Samsung's actual model number for the WiFi only version of the 2014 Galaxy Note 10.1. Most definitely NOT a cheapo tablet!! Although this wifi issue makes me wonder. I had the functionality back for about a day or so, and then it disappeared again. This has to be a simple case of a loose connector, but I sure can't find it. Ugh. Utterly frustrating.

What firmware version are you using because I am having the same issue. I manually updated to the september update (P600UEUCNI1) for the wifi version and started experiencing the same issue.

*****PARTIAL solution*****
I have proven 100% that mine is problematic hardware . . . . . NOT software or kernel. For the time being my WiFi is back up & seemingly stable. I had to remove the back from the tablet for the fix. You have to be *extremely* careful, but it just snaps off with no screws. Lots of YouTube videos if you choose to attempt, but please don't say I didn't give you fair warning!
The reason I say partial solution is that I haven't pinpointed the exact location of the short. I am 99% sure it is somewhere on the extreme upper left hand corner as you face the front of the tablet. There are a couple of ribbon connectors in that area, and a few snap on type connectors that look like little motherboard chips. After gently poking & prodding the ribbons and disconnecting & reconnecting the snap connectors (being CAREFUL; I cannot stress this enough), my WiFi reappeared.
My final tip is to keep the screen on the page that shows the list of available networks. If you are having the same problem I was, this screen will just show "turning on" and nothing else for the WiFi. While poking around, I would occasionally see the list of networks pop up & then go back off. I finally hit whatever the magic spot is, and the networks held. Snapped the back cover on again, and I've been online for probably 4-5 days now without a single hiccup.
And before I get flamed, I know how dangerous it is to poke around with a powered, exposed tablet. There are probably certain points that could make connection and FRY the entire thing in an instant. I was just willing to take the risk as my tablet was useless without network capability. I had nothing to lose. I would recommend at least trying to poke & prod with the tablet OFF a few times to be safe, but I personally got tired of rebooting over & over & over & over. My luck sucks. With the tablet ON, I was at least able to monitor when something was happening.

I bought my Note in March of this year, I started having the WiFi issue after the April firmware update. At first I would get the Connected to... message at random times, even though I had full signal strength. At the end of September, I started losing connection at random times and in the middle of October, I had to send it in to Best Buy's Geek Squad service to have them repair it. It is a hardware issue, as the no matter what firmware version I use, it will never connect to the router. I know it, Geek Squad is aware of it, as I have sent it in for repair twice so far. I would have to send it in a third time before they will think about replacing it with a new Note. I will admit, that before I updated it in May, I did root it, because I tried to remove the Business Week+ and New York Times apps, as I never used either one of them. I tried disabling them, only to have them reactivate and update themselves.
Damn, what I read here is not good news. My SM-P605's died yesterday.

Hardware issue for sure. Same problem with mine. Opened the back case, disconnected the upper right (as your looking at the screen) small ribbon, reconnected, and boom, perfect wifi once again!
The EZ Package Disabler app is fine for debloating rooted and non-rooted devices with Touchwiz roms. It uses Knox, so that mustn't be removed. The apps are still on the system partition, but are completely dead now. While other apps, especually for non-rooted devices kill the system apps during boit and try to prevent their restart. But during boot the whole stuff is active until the app kicks in, allowing the system apps to receive updates, communicate, spam free flash mem etc.
The app wirks the same way on my rooted P605 and unrooted S5. And gives a reason to buy Samsung stuff, unlike Touchwiz and its bloatware. As far as custom roms go, i found that of my old LG L9 much better. Even if the early roms were AOSP 4.0.4 based, then 4.1.3, they had already had the fresh & bright look & feel of the future Kitkat, and a few useful enhancements like an integrated backup tool, which was more simple, but for me as useful as TB.
As for the main problem here, i think using a case with a hardened backside, and not one if these with a big hole(though being better than nothing), prevents oroblens like battery, display and seemingly wifi connectors loosening. Or bad solder joints. The backplate of the note gives thru any pressure on the back, especially in the middle area. It then rests on the battery, metal shields, connectors and stuff. This seems to generate enough wear over time for problems. The same back plate on a much smaller device(my S5, but that has a subchassis covering the innards, too) would be much stiffer, and my 7" tablet has an aluminium unibody case, such trouble is unknown there.

same problem here... I used to own a SM-600 purchased in 2014 unfortunately I lost it... (the first tablet worked without any proble until I lost it...) than I managed to found the same modell brand new on amazon... it worked for 2 weeks and 2 days ago wifi died... but funny enough not straight away.... first couple time just switched off the wifi... I managed to switch simply back... next day it only worked if restarted the device... now factory reset nothing... If it is hardware related why worked 2 weeks witout any problem? If it is software related why not working after software reset? Only installed a few apps from the store.. the device did not overheated or physically damaged...

Since I bought this a long time ago, I have to pay for the repair. I just want to know if it is worth it. How much did it cost you (if you bothered)?
In my opinion it would be foolish to spend a dime to repair a 4 year old tablet. If the battery is original, it may well be near the end of its useful life as well. FWIW, I bought this tablet used about 8 months ago and have not experienced this wifi problem.
It's still so well equipped, that you can't simply replace with a modern entry level or midline tablet, but with a top of the line one, so a repair is well an option.
I just don't have a clue about the SoCs performance level. To which current ones it would equal and where things get better. I can only compare it to my similarly(Snapdragon 801) equipped phone and my cheap 7" tablet's quad core Mediatek SoC, and that is considerably worse, though being three years newer.

phone arrived Yesterday. Worked perfectly whilst I added all my personal details then I decided to install asphalt 8, just to see how it performs (I don't actually intend to play it - can't stand the pay to win crap), and the phone made a nasty crackling sound and froze on the menu screen.
Powered down with power button, and on restart the screen is messed up with multi coloured lines running across it in various places. Then freezes, and reboots to repeat the process,the lines appear in different places. Sometimes makes it into the os, sometimes show the android error broken robot icon.
I'm guessing some fault with the graphic chip.
Luckily I bought direct from amazon so they are sending a replacement, but I have lost money on next day delivery, plus however much it costs to send back the phone (I'm in the UK but bought from mainland Europe) also not pleased my personal details are still on the device. At least I didn't import it from China.
Hopefully my phone was just a rare dud, and the replacement will be fine, as I can't find any similar reports online.
Anyone else had similar problems?
Yeah I would say that's a faulty unit. Sending it back is the right thing to do. Hope you get your money back

Well the replacement is great so far.
I noticed before the 1st one died that it was getting pretty hot on the back at the top, whilst simply going through the setup process.
The new one has been cool throughout setup, charging and about 3 straight hours of webbrowsing, so maybe the heat issue some are reporting is related to the hardware issue that killed my 1st one.
It does seem that quality control could be lacking, but as long as you buy from somewhere that offers returns, then i think its well worth buying.
I have just been using it as a mini tablet at home until i get a case and screen protector, so i dont know what the call quality etc is like, but battery on wifi has been pretty good.
Also, i charged it fully 3 days ago, and then left it on standby with wifi turned on and didnt use it. This moring it had over 80% battery, so standby time is much better than my s4 mini.

Nexus 7 Touchscreen Suddenly Does Not Respond

Hi Folks,
We've had a 2013 Nexus 7 for 1.5 years and it's been a great device. Always on stock Android OS. so we get OTAs periodically.
While away, the Nexus battery ran down because my daughter had kept it on before we left. We wirelessly charged it again - i.e., the USB port has been broken for the past year - and booted it up.
Despite seeing the usual animated lock screen and hearing notifications in the background, the touch screen was not responding to input.
I tried powering down/up, then got the "Google" logo and a hang.
On a weird idea from a different forum, I powered down, opened the back and reseated the thinner connector which travels over the battery, then rebooted. It worked!
But, the touchscreen is still not responding on the lock screen.
EDIT: Tried a wipe/factory reset from recovery, but the touchscreen is still not responding
Ideas welcome, please.

Called ASUS and they think it's a hardware fault, for which they estimated a $300+ repair.
Seems I'll need to consider a new purchase or replacement touchscreen on my own. Ugh.

First time I've heard that the touchscreen would die without warnings. I'd bet it wouldn't be the hardware and based thereon, would suggest that you back up the tab, wipe it clean and flash a custom rom as close to the stock thing as possible, like CleanRom and see what it does. Before you do that, you might want to reseat the touchscreen cables - two-pronged connected to the daughter board at the bottom of the tab. Make sure you disconnect the battery prior to disconnecting any cables.

Well, I was already on stock and wiped it clean, which unfortunately made no difference.
There is a 2" crack in the glass in the upper left corner, which is new. This makes me believe that my daughter trapped the tablet under some heavy things (without a cover) during a recent trip - normally, this tablet has been drop-proof, so this is a wild notion. I already tried re-seating the ribbon cables, etc.
I did find a like-new replacement nearby on Craigslist for a decent price, so went that route for a quick "fix." Meanwhile, I've ordered a replacement display to see if I can get it working again via a h/w upgrade - will experiment and see what's up.

A crack in the upper left corner shouldn't affect the whole touchscreen since the cables are located at its lower right corner. When I suggested that you reinstall a rom, I was thinking of the touch firmware being possibly corrupted. Re-flashing a new rom would install it anew; wiping it clean with the current one won't. I've not experienced this with this model, but it did happen to my other Asus models in the past. Leaning heavily on a new touchscreen might be disappointing when the glitch turns out to be software-related. But again, it's your decision. Good luck anyway.

I understood what you suggested, but the touchscreen subsystem suddenly flaking out seemed as much of a longshot as the new crack or generalized crushing pressure hurting the display/ribbon cable connection. IMHO. I'm guessing one area of h/w - cable, screen, etc. - has been compromised.
Upon more deep inspection (this time with my glasses on), there is a looong crack across the entire bottom right corner and a chip near the bottom right-middle. So, my guess that she crushed the device on her trip may not be too far off.
Plus, this stock device has had a faulty USB connector for the past year, so I have no direct means to get another ROM on there, etc. with just h/w buttons.
The replacement is in excellent condition, so this older tablet is now for experimentation, more than anything.

Anyone with a perfect touch screen?

I'm on my second Nexus 7 2013 and even this one has ghost touch and unresponsive areas. Now I sent it to Asus for RMA since it's still in warranty. But what I want to know is if someone's got a perfect touch screen on his Nexus 7. The last one I bought is perfect when I factory reset it, but then after some days ghost touches start to happen. I wish that last hardware revisions solved the problem. Nexus 7 is a great and cheap tablet right now, but sadly this hardware problem makes it unusable.
last time i checked, mine was still working fine, and i purchased it used on ebay two years ago. display swaps arent hard on it either, so if mine goes ill probably just swap it myself
Touch screen is fine. It's my accelerometer and charging port that aren't so hot. Fortunately, I can use Rotation Control for the first and drop a blob of solder on the defective USB port for the latter.
