at the moment I have a HTC 10 with normal root and xposed.
But I would like to have the option of installing OTA updates and I have some question:
- Is there any advantage between system and systemless root except OTA/Android Pay? Or is it still better to use system root?
- Can I still flash a custom kernel and other mods in TWRP?
- What do I need for systemless root and systemless xposed?
- Are there any disadvantages?
And it would be awesome if someone could give me a full guide how to do this.
I would start with flashing a RUU, but what should I do after that?

As for systemless root, yes, you can still flash custom kernels thru TWRP. I'm running @flar2's Elemental X and have run them both successfully on LeeDroid and Venom. Some mods may have to have some special prep if they're not baked into a rom, such as AdAway, to work properly with systemless root.

That's the reason why I'm asking - OTA is working, but Android Pay not (for me it doesn't matter. I never used android pay).
But I want to stay on Stock ROM, no Custom ROMs. I just want the ability to download and install OTA updates.
Edit: Well, I see that I still need stock recovery for OTA updates. It doesn't make sense to install systemless root, because I have stock system-image backup and stock recovery.

I am in the same position, just got the phone and want to install systemless root, systemless xposed and systemless Adaway... Mainly the reason I want this is because I dont want to s-off (you cant flash newer firmwares that come with updates) or I dont want to restore system and performing update after that... I just want stock rom with elementalx and those xposed goodies I want it so that when I get a notification about update, I dont need to backup anything, flash anything, just install update regularly like all normal people BUT still after update have root and xposed
I think its possible, but I have to do a little research before I get on with it.. Now first step is unlock bootloader

Even with systemless root you have to restore stock recovery to use OTA updates
Well, I have a look at this next weekend when I have some more time.
Or I just try a custom ROM... :laugh:

Yes but the amazing thing is that after you flash everything you want, you can immediately restore stock recovery and have stock recovery all the time after you have everything systemless
Then if you want to flash something you flash TWRP.. otherwise you just leave re-flashed stock recovery

Hello, I will receive my HTC 10 on Friday, and I all I want is to root and install Xposed Framework (A kernel would be nice too, but it's not a must) but I do want to receive OTA's and not having to flash the Rom each time that I want to update...
So if I root my phone Systemless, will I be able to Install Xposed (and a kernel) so when I receive an OTA, I just flash the stock kernel and install the update, then flash twrp again, without losing root or my data?
If so, how do I systemless root?

There's actually 3 methods commonly used here with SuperSU superuser. Which applies to you?
1) Stock with Chainfire Auto Root for Note 4 (CFAR) has recently been updated to support Android 5.1 and possibly 6.0 It offers possibility to full un-root and take next OTA update but limits system and recovery to stock using systemless root. It's experimental, patches stock kernel and sort of fragile unless you avoid recovery flashes and mounting system. Custom recovery or mounting system may break the ability to return to OTA for update with full un-root but also, flashing custom recovery may trick you into applying system based SuperSU which would break root by loss of the stock kernel boot and root patch causing boot loop. Even flashing a SuperSU zip package may not help unless also flashing a custom kernel (kernel first). CFAR is not the method to use if wanting custom kernel, flash system mods, unofficial Xposed or custom ROM. You've rooted before so you most likely have your Samsung driver from Samsung mobile support for Note 4 SM-N910P and know to enable USB debugging in Developer mode.

2) Rooting stock Odex by way of custom recovery and using modified custom kernel with SuperSU for root. It allows for some Odex modifications but not recommended Xposed due to the system .odex extensions making addition of system applications extra work. Have to remove the Wanam unofficial Xposed framework (the one required to use for stock) to install system application mods and reinstall unofficial Xposed. You could still use Odex ROM and Xposed, just use the unofficial Xposed as a finishing touch to your ROM. You could also backup before applying Xposed to restore later if you decide to make a system application change.

SuperSU 2.52 beta
3) Flashing custom ROMs, usually deodexed which are more friendly with modifications, including Xposed only requires the custom recovery flashed in Odin with latest Odin with auto reboot option unchecked, USB and battery pull 30 seconds after success 0 fail message, and booting into recovery to flash the custom ROM per OP instructions. Watch these stock ROMs for systemless root (SuperSU version greater than 2.52 beta); you may have to swap kernel and SuperSU (together, in that order) if making a change to either.
Knowing what you want to use root for would help but the above may get you started or direct your next question.

The ad blocker, depending on choice may indicate you should go with method 2 or 3.
Adguard from XDA forum would work with method 1 but only works with the browser in free mode. I know that Adaway webserver wouldn't stay enabled with method 1, systemless root.
You may also consider using FolderMount from Google Play to enable write to sdcard if you keep your titanium backup folders on extSdCard. The app patches /system/bin/sdcard and /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml That app would also suggest method 2 or 3 for root.
Mostly stock your preference? Go with method 2. Only real limitation methods 2 and 3 yield us having to update with Odin or try the return to stock for OTA. In theory, return to stock with method 1 and full un-root may actually fix OTA update if attempt to return to stock and OTA update fails for dm-verity or unauthorized modification. No guarantees though. Rooting means we accept the possibility that we may have to wait for a stock tar to update. Best to wait for confirmation that root is possible and what is required first, anyway.
Edit: the minimum links to root with are end of method 2. The instructions for TWRP flash are actually in method 3. Flash the kernel and SuperSU zip in recovery once TWRP is booted.

You can choose other kernels for root but Beastmode is closer to stock and easy on battery, IMO.
But yes, starting in Android 5.1.1 for our phone, kernel with root exploit became necessary for root. Flash the kernel then SuperSU zips in TWRP recovery together and boot. Rooted stock.

Correct. You did mean Odin the TWRP recovery and then in TWRP, flash kernel and SuperSU zips, right?

I am in kind of an odd position here. For some reason, I can't root my Note 4. I've tried both methods 1 and 2 you listed, but neither works. I am running 5.1.1, bone stock. I've been running the stock ROM for about a month since I got this phone used, upgrading from my old Note 3. This is really odd, considering I've been rooting/flashing ROMS since my first Android phone (HTC Hero) in 2010, and have had Samsung phones the last 4 years and never run into this issue. Currently, my phone shows that the beastmode kernel has been flashed, but SuperSU is not showing up and Root Checker is telling me I am not in fact rooted.
I really just want to root so I can WiFi tether, I don't mind running the stock Touchwiz ROM. It runs smoothly and I've had zero issues. Is my best bet just to Odin a stock .tar and start over? I'm trying to bypass having to backup a bunch of files. Normally CFAR would do the trick. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Basically, attempting method 2 after method 1 breaks root. If you want method 1, you'd have to start over with Odin.
There are a couple of solutions to get method 2 to work if you're not interested in method 3. Method 3 would be the easier fix though.
Are you interested in some fixes for methods 2?

I did it the other way around. I tried method 2 before method 1. I am definitely open to some fixes. However, if it requires a full wipe, I'd rather just backup and go with Odin/method 1 since I am already familiar with that method. Either way, I appreciate the help.

Yeah, they're not really that interchangeable as you've discovered. That is why I tried to differentiate the methods to choose a direction and stay the course.
Starting over with method 1 will possibly restore the OTA for update with full un-root. But no guarantee from me. But that's the only way to restore it with that possibility. Using the ##3282# method to get hotspot may break that. I'm not sure but I think flashing the zip in recovery would break that option for two reasons: flashing custom recovery and modifying system. It wouldn't break root, just nullify the reasons to use systemless root when the traditional method is more stable and you have to use Odin to update anyway.
I guess I omitted the hotspot only suggestion should most likely choose method 2? And updated CFAR isn't the traditional system based root we had in KitKat. It's strictly systemless root and experimental as far as Samsung Lollipop is concerned.

I'm trying to install the new OTA that was just released while keeping Xposed, Root, and TWRP and coming up with a process for the future to apply each OTA going forward without dealing with the mess I'm dealing with now. Any and all help is appreciated . I'm very strong and comfortable with using fastboot commands and flashing and just need someone to help me wrap my head around the process of doing this and step by step instructions of achieving my goal. So currently I have downloaded the new OTA_PERFUME_WL_M60_SENSE80GP_VZW_NA_Gen_Unlock_1.80.617.1_R-1.53.617.5_release_480240aw6u8xea6328m583.zip file. I have the latest TWRP installed on my phone, I have the latest Systemless Root zip (BETA-SuperSU-v2.74-2-forceencrypt.zip), as well as the latest Systemless Xposed zip (Xposed-v85.6-sdk23-systemless.zip). I have also downloaded the TWRP clean system Backup 1.53.617.5_twrp.zip. My phone is a T-Mobile HTC 10 that I've converted into a US Unlocked model by S-Offing it, changing the CID to the super CID (11111111), and installed the 1.53.617.5 RUU. I tried doing different steps on different guides here and now my phone is all sorts of messed up. Root isn't working 100% (es file explorer fails when trying to toggle on root explorer, but fx explorer works fine), and Xposed is broken (modules don't work, Xposed app saying no framework found even though I've flashed it). Can someone help me with what I should do to be able to install the OTA, root, have Xposed, and keep TWRP so that way in the future, I can apply and OTA and keep the rest?

I am also just starting this procedure... Just bought my 10 today, and I am starting slowly.. All I know is that if you dont change anything in /system directory and have stock recovery, OTAs perform fine.
So my plan is unlock bootloader, flash TWRP, root, flash ElementalX, install xposed and after that flash stock firmware. Both SuperSU AND Xposed should be systemless. I know that AdAway can also be systemless, but I have to figure out everything beucase I just charged and turn on the phone
Download Xposed for Material Design... I had the same issue with the "framework not found" error.

Yeah I've downloaded the latest. Now I have an Xposed is installed but not active error :-/
The last version (85.6) doesn't work that well. It's better to install version 85.5 which works fine.
I got my OP3 1-2 weeks . before i had a S4 (rooted). I'm really happy with this phone but i got some questions and problems.
1. When i video call via skype the camera will freeze in 50sec. when I switch the camera to the back and front it's fixed for 50 sec again and same thing happening again....
2. Rooting the OP3 is it safe to do ? And does someone got a guide for it ? I saw allot off them but I don't know which one works for Oxygen 3.2.1. I got some rooting experience with the S4 but rooting op3 is kinda different.
3. When i got a rooted op3 without a custom rom. Do i still get updates via System updates in the settings ?

Proof: Myself (have the 3.2.1. OTA Update ready to download with systemless SuperSU and systemless Xposed.

Seriously? I've been told several times installing a custom recovery and OTA is a no go...

You are right that you will get a prompt for upcoming OTA updates.
But they won't install because your kernel and system are not stock.
My device is also rooted systemless and I can confirm that you will get an error inside TWRP
when trying to install the OTA patches.
When rooted, regardless which way, it is always necessary to flash the full rom zip.
So in the end @J_Dutch was right to say that you won't get updates
because you will always have to manually flash the full rom.
On the other hand, when somebody only uses TWRP (for backups for example) without modifying the system and kernel at all,
OTAs will work just fine.

I'm currently running a fully stock (used to be running 6.0, then 5.0, then rooted + twrp then fulmics.... before discovering that safetynet didn't like that) and was wondering if there is a way to get root without having safetynet detecting anything, on either 5.x or 6.x
I've seen suggestions to install TWRP and then flash a systemless supersu or magisk, but in order to install TWRP, I need to be rooted, plus I think (?) having TWRP installed would trigger safetynet, but don't quote me on that.
I've been thinking about whether it's possible to set up root methods like this or this install supersu systemlessly, but I don't understand enough to be able to do that by myself.
edit: bootloader is locked... I'm not sure you can unlock it?

1. If I root the phone, Can I flash the ota Update zip using twrp?
2. If I flash the update zip successfully using twrp, will I lose twrp and root?
I just want to know what are the steps to follow to update the Stock OS but also keeping the custom recovery and root after the update..

You will not lose stock features if you root. Both SafteyNet bypass options and root hide features exist with custom kernels and Magisk.
Taking OTA's will be a slight issue, though. Need to flash the Magisk uninstall zip first, take OTA (you will lose custom recovery), then re-flash custom recovery then flash Magisk again.

I thought if you flashed the full zip and then Magisk right after, it would not only keep root, but TWRP as well?

So I need to use custom Kernal to Pass Safety net? Safety net fails in Stock kernel?
If you use Magisk, no. Magisk will hide the parameters that would reveal that your device has the bootloader unlocked.

Well.. it's not keeping root if you have to re-flash Magisk after!
You may get away with not having to flash Magisk uninstall zip, but you might as well since you'll be in recovery anyways.
You can flash stock rom using TWRP as mentioned in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/how-to/oneplus-5t-mirrors-official-oxygen-os-t3708099
Once the update is completed you will be back in stock recovery and you need to flash TWRP again

Sorry, I meant flashing Magisk will boot you back into the system updated, rooted and with TWRP intact.
I haven't heard about having to uninstall Magisk or anything, was just curious
