Unable to change permissions - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

On stock 3.1.2 rooted and I can't seem to change permissions for my apps. Trying to download something in chrome but I can't add storage permissions. Says that a draw over other apps permission is stopping it but I can't find it for chrome.
Edit: Seems it was supersu and swipepad were stopping it. I had draw over enabled for swipepad on my OPO before though so not quite sure why it's not working now.

what apps have you removed after root?

Just wanting to start a list as to which apps/files have been been checked to see if after removing won't mess up the phone. I want to debloat this as much as possible
I've removed all at&t apps except smart wifi
removed Polaris office, live wallpapers, Facebook, city ID
want to remove YP but it says LG YP and looks like there is some link to it from the contact book that may break, if someone has already done that please post.
Not going to touch any Google apps yet since looks like some are getting security errors on reboot
what else have you guys deleted and haven't had any issues
has anyone deleted that other setting app for tabbed view... May just disable it since I don't really need two next to each other

You have to root it and then use titanium backup to remove or freeze apps.
Better to freeze them first to make sure you don't delete something that will cause issues later.
Hope this helps.

....Or just install root explorer and delete them through that. Freezing apps does nothing.

Except this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1970546
Installed the update from AT&T, then applied this root. Works great, no problems.
Going to go start freezing some of the bloat...

Not a good idea at all until we have usable recovery. As linked above, some of the apps are intertwined tightly within the lg security and you will lock down your phone if you remove the wrong app. The linked poster removed Google Movies and that borked his phone.
Freezing is fine for me for now. It is not as if the bloat is causing lag, this phone is fast.
The security issue seems to be happening if Google apps were tampered. I've removed every AT&T app except myAT&T along with the Browser and Email app and even the EasySettings, and haven't gotten the security screen.
I removed most of the ATT Apps. Also got rid of LG YP. All it did was make it so the yp link in contacts doesn't work. Just an error message, no force closing.
Also added 4.2 keyboard and camera as well as SVoice. Replaced LGs weird browser with stock ICS. Loving this thing so far.
I've frozen everything with AT&T and YP in it, so far no problems. I'm also using everything I restored from my SGSIII. Apex, SwiftKey X, Handcent, etc...

How'd you get the stock browser to work? This is the only piece I can't get to work. It always force closes when trying to open it.

I got an AOSP 4.0.4 browser apk, moved it to system/apps via root browser. Renamed the lg browser to browser.bup (just to keep a stock backup copy) wiped dalvik and rebooted. Permissions need to be set to rw-r-r.
Hope that helps ya.

No go, moved it to /system/app, chmod 644, deleted /data/dalvik-cache and rebooted. Still Force closes. Any chance you can share your APK? Mine is supposed to be from the GSM Galaxy Nexus but you never know...
EDIT: Nevermind, just grabbed a Browser.apk off some random CyanogenMod 9 ROM. Didn't like it moved to /system/app, but took it fine when sideloaded as a regular APK. Go figure.
Wow, Google should've kept this browser. It blows Chrome out of the water in terms of smoothness and functionality.

Did it the same way as mentioned for the browser. Could never get photo sphere working, but i like the interface of the 4.2 camera so much more.
I once had a lg nitro hd and after removing all the bloat i safely could i found that my battery life was amazing. Has anyone experienced that on this phone too?
We should make a list of what we are freezing/removing.
Also, I've been trying to get the browser trick to work all morning... no dice. I can't even get it to show up. Had my friend send me browser.apk from his AOKP rom, and just realized its Jelly Bean.... might be the problem. Haven't tried the camera trick yet..
EDIT:
Ok I got the browser working. Used CM9 rom. Its sooooo fast. I've uninstalled Firefox, and Chrome... Now on to find the camera from 4.2
Ok, I can't get the 4.2 camera working to save my life. It FCes everytime I try it. The gallery is working fine. Used the files from here:

Uninstalled System App And Now Screen Won't Turn Off

My screen won't turn off. when u turn it off it stays off for about 1-2 seconds and then turns back on. it must have been a particular system app I uninstalled. I was thinking It was because I unistalled the home system apps, which elsewhere are list as safe for removing as long as u replace it first. I was able to reinstall them, but not sure if they are reinstalled right. I did see another guy whom when he reinstalled certain system apps he had to rename them first. I can't find the post. So far that doesn't work.
1. does anybody know which system app I uninstalled or did to do this?
2. does anyone know the proper name to rename the home app apk for re-installation?
3. if this happens to anyone else I have found that using the "Redeye - Stay wake" app, Power on volume (button fix), and the "Desktop Visualizer (for creating customized shortcut) seemed to be a temporary fix until I find out what I did.
Anyone?

If you deleted LG Home, that's your problem. That's the LG stock launcher. Your phone is technically booting, but it cannot get to the desktop without a launcher, basically. The thing is that you need both the app and the odex files to be properly installed for the LG Home launcher to function.
Do you have a backup? If not, you'll need to reflash the ROM. Do you have another launcher installed?
hey.
i had read that someone said that you can uninstall your native lg home apps as long as have an replacement launcher in place first. I already had nova prime launcher installed before I uninstalled the native lg home launcher apps? this wont work?
I did make an app backup of the native home launcher apps with "titanium backup" and "app master" (Uninstall master). is this sufficient?

I did find that I already had the APKs backed up from what I previously mentioned. I checked my root/system/apps directory and the odex files are there too. what do I do now? or do I need to do anything since I already previously had nova prime installed before I uninstalled the native lg home apps and that should have be fine?

It won't use Nova unless it was set to use it, so it's not going to really matter.
It could be that the files were corrupted when you tried to reinstall them manually. I've had the same sort of issues with NFC and Bluetooth resources. I deleted then and then tried to reinstall them and produced the same sort of thing you described. I had no choice but to flash back to stock via the uber-crappy LG tools.
Let me try to understand. If you install Nova Prime while u still have a perfectly good working copy of LG home and then Uninstall LG home what is the problem? how would it not be set to use nova?

There's a separate laucher/Home chooser component in the LG Home software that, unless it is set to use another launcher (which it can be in the settings) it will continue to look for LG Home and try to launch it. If it's been deleted, you'll have a mess.
Didn't you say that you tried to reinstall it also? I don't think it was perfect after reinstallation. It should be, but again, I used Titanium Backup to delete and reinstall some system components, and it did not work, even though the components seemed to be installed/restored correctly.
In reality, they weren't.
Fixed. Thanks donalgodon. That worked. my problem was that I had installed nova prime, but did not make it the default before Uninstalling the lg native home apps. So I found I had backups of lg home apk/data, lg selector apk/data, and of the lg optimus theme. the reason my previous restore did not work was because I was trying to restore the apk only with app master (master Uninstaller) which did not have the capability to restore data also for apps. I used titanium backup to restore my apk/data backup from last month of 1st the selector, then lg home, a d then the lg theme. it work perfectly. Then in made nova prime my default launcher. I tested the sleep awake functionality and it once again was working. I then uninstalled again the lg home selector, the lg home, and the Optimus theme. everything went perfectly.

Might wanna move Nova to /system/app and fix the permissions just as a precaution.. If you decide to do a factory reset, you'll be right back where you started lol.

Battery drain fix

After updating to kitkat my battery went downhill.
Someone suggested turning off location services and that fixed it.
Got to researching more and found someone saying to deny location services from Google search
So I used the app "app ops" from the play store then gave it root rights from in there it will list all apps that use location services and you can disable their permissions one by one to decide which ones are necessary.
Really not sure how we survive without this app.
Hope this helps.

Good find! There are several apps by that name tho... Which one in particular are you using? I'm keen to try
Cheers

It is a simple program that lets you take back permissions

Well I'm not sure why, but this app just won't run on my phone....CM11 m7. I am running ART, but other people say that is compatible. I just get the same thing a small minority of users get, press install & reboot, but the app doesn't install to system. oh well :/
Did you grant it root access?
I don't think it matters for you though cm 11 has this program built in
Go to settings then privacy then privacy guard then the three dots for settings click advanced now you can change permissions
Sent from my XT907 using XDA Free mobile app
Yes I did grant it root access. But like you said CM11 has it built in & I didn't know that until now, so thanks. It even has a counter there with the number of location access, and the stand out one is 'google play services' with a count of over 300,000. Going to have a play around with that and see if disabling location access for play services has any negative effects.

[APP] Wear Mini Launcher

I really love this app it does an amazing job of replacing the stock launcher, and let's you navigate everything like settings, quick settings a well as get to apps faster (multi column app vs single app display). You can also sort by active use.
Not sure if anyone else has tried it, the only part I wish I knew how to do was replace the stock launcher for this to get some resources back.

I had it on my watch for a while and found it useful. But then I removed it because I started getting an error "screen overlay detected" while trying to run some other apps (e.g Messenger). After several trials and errors I suspected that the Weat Mini Launcher may be the root cause. So I removed it. After that the error has not occurred again. But whether that is just a co-incidence OR the Mini Launcher was really the root cause - I don't know.

Yes, this is an issue I've found to. The app has a setting to disable itself, then you can run your app with the overlay error and give it the new permissions. Then go back to your mini launcher and enable it again. You only have to do this with new apps that require new permissions the first time.

Ad Choice

I just got a pixel XL and it is running pie. I am getting full screen ads all the time which I have never seen before is this just normal for the stock room. How in the heck do I either kill or remove this as it is very annoying. It should I just run a custom rom.
The only way that can happen is if you granted the ads permission to operate by maybe installing an app. Check your app list. Any app that looks suspicious uninstall it. And by suspicious I mean no logo or weird name or maybe it's an app you just don't remember installing.
