Unlockable bootloader? - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm going to explain my situation from the start so no one gets confused. I bought an LG G4 h818p not knowing it wouldn't have an unlockable bootloader so I'm basically stuck with LG's horrible horrible UI. But I know a guy who's looking to exchange his HTC one m9 for my G4. His model number is 0PJA100. So I'm doing this just for a raincheck but does this model have an unlockable bootloader? If so, is development good for it? Custom Development is one of the things that matter most to me when buying a phone. So I don't know why I bought this LG.

Every variant except the Verizon one , can be unlocked with htcdevs website.

Regarding development: it depends on what you're looking for. We have many talented developers and development teams in both original Android development and Android development (ie, AOSP & stock based). HTC is neither the most or least developer-friendly, so results can be mixed.
Things that are currently hang-ups for non-stock ROMs include IR blaster, double-tap to wake, encryption, and some sound issues. You can get an idea of how that all is going by browsing the top threads in those forums.

Thank you for your answer. One more question, do you think it would be unwise to move to the m9 after having owned a g4? Camera isn't a big deal to me but I'd still like a decent camera. Is the m9's at least that? I just don't want to rush into another thing that I might regret later on.

I'm afraid I can't help you much in comparing the two: I've never had a LG G4 and don't know much about its camera. That said, I'm very satisfied with the HTC M9 camera. I use it occasionally and have no complaints.

Just curios...Why not more ROM development?

I understand at least the T-mobile variety has an unlocked bootloader, and we have root for all, so why aren't we seeing a bit more action in the development section(s)?
I am not a developer just an avid flasher, so I am not keen on what makes one platform more attractive to developers but it seems to be a very popular phone. If this is a dumb question, flame away...
Just wondering out loud...
thanks,

We could do that, I know jcase is having a bounty for the international version of the G3 (see thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/bounty-lg-g3-d855bootloader-unlocking-t2807900)
maybe we should get him a T-Mobile G3 and have him make a ROM.
It would be cool if the tmobile g3 begins rom development now until all other variants get their bootloader unlocked. That way we wont loose much time.

Do Something about the lack of development - Sign this petition now!!

Like many users here, I am disappointed by the pace of development. I understand that the T-mobile version is the only one that has a unlocked bootloader and that limits the interest on development as many potential devs have other variants. Many users here (myself included) are not knowledgeable enough to develop anything ourselves. The less enlightened (to put it nicely) non-developers complain like crazy while others sit quietly for a paragon developer to come along. There are a few developers who are doing great work bringing CM11 and DeviantXone to our phones. Either way most of us non-developers really don't have any opportunity to make a difference... until now.
There is a petition that is taking off at change.org. It has already received a response from LG and with more signatures, could lead to a change. The petition is asking for LG to unlock the bootloader of the phone. This should increase the number of developers by a substantial amount. Developing for the LG G3 is much better than developing for just the D851.
Please join Sebastian Jena's campaign: Click here to sign the petition!

That does not sound like that at all if it what he meant needs to reword big time. It read to me that we have no Dev in this section. We have a small amount but we have. Maybe I read it or took it wrong.

I wouldn't call what going on right now a lack of development. We have both stock based and cyanogenmod based Roms. When the cyanogenmod Roms that are out now become stable we will see a lot of ports for our phone. Its not that big of a deal but the petition is a great idea for the rest of the world. Just so you are aware most g3 versions can have stock based Roms but there seems to only be one actively developed ROM at a time over in the generic g3 section because the rest of the world has the same problem us T-Mobile folks do (lack of people willing to step up and learn how to do this stuff). I give it another month at most until we see stable cyanogenmod.
Goes back to 1% who modify their phones vs. Corporate clients who insist on security.... Who do you think cell providers and manufacturers are going to listen too....?

This is a valid point but I am not sure that many corporate clients support android devices nevermind the LG G3. Everywhere I have worked has been iphone and blackberry but the sample size is only 3 so I could be way off about this. Also they usually listen to the loudest of us. Even if we are outnumbered 10 to 1, we still stand a chance as long as we make more noise in support of this than they do in support of the status-quo. Even if you are right though, it doesn't take long to sign up and it is probably the biggest difference I and other non-developers can make so why not try at least?
I'd be fine with signing it, but then I'll get loads of emails from them, which I don't want.

Just mark it as spam. I signed. I'd say reword to: "sign this petition to get ALL g3 bootloaders unlocked and help development!" And leave it at that.

For the record.... How many bootloaders been unlocked by a cell provider after initial release... And modding community is probably outnumbered by 100 to 1 or more likely more..and loud noise doesn't over come revenue stream... Be glad some providers release a dev phone for purchase.

You still may want to edit.your post. You spend far too long complaining about the lack of developing and how no one is deloping and.far less on why the phone should be unlike. Wasn't until the ending that I was like...oh he's not making a petition because no one is developing but to unlock the boot loader....
I also noticed the lack of development behind the G3.
Its a great phone, but if you want a phone with development youll have to get a HTC or Samsung or Nexus.
Even the Samsung devices with locked bootloaders get more development lol.
Sold mine on Craigslist and I hve a Note 4 on preorder awaiting shipment.
There use to be a time where if you were dissapointed in the amount of development being done on a phone you learned how dev. Thats what was great about android. It is an open source system made for you to make it youelr own. Yes times have changed and and not everything is completely open (nothing was ever completely open), but i know there are still ways to learn. Yes you might think your too busy to learn but if you really want more development for this device you will find the time to learn and truly make your device yours.

There is development going on for the g3. Just the tmobile variant. Once the boot loader gets unlocked, it'll probably be easy to port them to the other variants. And it's not LG's fault that only tmobile's boot loader is unlocked. It's the cell provider's that wanted that. If everyone just gives up and moves to different phones, the devs will see no need to try and unlock the other bootloaders.
I signed it , hopefully they unlock it

[Q] Why lesser roms for LG G3 being a flagship phone?

Hi Friends, I just got my LG G3 yesterday D855 model. I was pretty excited as it was one of the flagship phones this year, but when I checked the forums there are pretty less roms as compared to other flagships. Is there any particular reason behind it, will we ever see more roms coming for this phone??
We may see more Roms for the device when Lollipop comes out for it, by the end of 2014
Sent from my LG-D855
Well this has been really due to the limitations that were present due to carriers not wanting to unlock the bootloader on the g3 (except T-Mobile) A Devs are some of the best people around because they dedicate their time to help the entire community and they have really tried but its been difficult. Also Look @ the Tmo Orig Dev Forum and just look over the CM rom... all the arguing and fighting is a reason why no dev is being made.

General HTC question

I started with iPhone many moons ago, then transitioned to Android / Samsung back around the S3 days. Been with Sammy ever since, but they are starting to get like Apple in that they are VERY unfriendly to the mod community and they go to great lengths to stop it. They are also killing their phones with Bloatware.
I am toying with going to either the M8 or M9 with my next upgrade (coming from Galaxy S5). Does HTC tend to have a major security war with their users or are they a little more lax? Does rooting void their warranty like it does with Sammy?
Thanks in advance.

Get the HTC M9. The M8 is really good, but the M9 fixes just about all of the M8 shortcomings. For unlocking and rooting, HTC is really simple and HTC facilitates the process. You just create an account on htcdev.com and submit a request for an unlock token. A few minutes later HTC sends you an email with the unlock token. Once you have that, you connect your phone to your computer and unlock but using fastboot commands. Once unlocked, you can install a custom recovery, again using fastboot commands, then just enter custom recovery (TWRP), go to the twrp reboot menu and select reboot, then twrp will say hey, you're not rooted, do you want to flash SuperSU and you swipe to flash it. Phone will boot into OS, you open the SuperSU apk and follow some screen prompts and one more reboot and your good to go.
That's it.
Supposedly, simply unlocking no longer voids your warranty, but if it appears that the phone broke because of running a custom rom (like, it overheated and the insides melted), they likely will not void the warranty.
Another reason you should get the M9...in the states, we get uh oh protection. So...you can do anything to your phone...drop it in the toilet, run over it with the car, whatever, and they will replace it, for free, for 1 year (including free overnight shipping of the new phone to you, then you send the broken one back)...so, you really don't need to put this beautiful phone in a case until either the year is up, or you get your second one. Also, if you don't use the uh oh protection, HTC gives you $100 off your next HTC phone. It's a pretty sweet deal.
I agree with the above post. My m9 has been awesome! I recently came from an s3 that had a locked bootloader thanks to Verizon and so I got the dev edition. So far I have flash at least 4 different firmwares and have tried almost every rom that's available. It's extremely easy to do once you get s-off. It will be a little bit of a learning curve so make sure to read the instructions carefully and read down the threads in order to anticipate anything that may go wrong.

If you come from flashing Sammy roms like I did, then I suggest you think really carefully before buying the M9. I dont hate my M9 as much as when I first bought it, but in hindsight I perhaps should have stuck with sammy. Flashing custom roms and updating firmware on Sammy is easy compared with htc M9 , and the M9 threads are alot more 'quiet' then Sammy S4 , S5 or note4 threads . Also you will find ALOT of conflicting/confusing instructions for M9, especially if you come from Sammy roms.
Here are some other posts worth reading before you decide buy M9 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60244822
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60245457
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=61298935
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60238311
With htc you have worry about S-on S-off then CID and supercid, then lock bootloader to run RUU or unlock to run 0PAIMG.zip files (which they call RUUs but they are different to RUU.exe files of course, but still called RUUs), must use smaller than 32Gb FAT32 sd card to update your firmware using sd card method, use htc_fastboot or fastboot etc etc. So confusing if you are from Sammy.
Then if someone, not new to flashing, asks a question and they get "search its been answered many times!' When actually the instructions can sometimes be slightly different from one thread to another , and some threads , not all, simply do not explain clearly why you need to do this or that, and/or give conflicting or incomplete instructions. You will have much less headache with Sammy devices. Also M9 u need to go back to stock to get an OTAs (if you are S-on). So all I am saying is read the M9 threads first, and get a feel if you want to take the dive. But if you want a challenge after (easy) customizing, Sammy roms, then M9 is definitely a good choice. Also there is NO cyanogen for M9 at the moment. But seems there some gr8 roms like Viper, Maximus, Insertcoin and Android Revolution..(.but you gotta make sure your M9s firmware MATCHES the roms firmware before even thinking about flashing them.) Just my two cents worth.
It is not really that hard when you know what you are doing. It is gonna be different with each device. You are just accustomed to doing it a certain way. It is always best to follow the golden rule here in XDA. Search first, read read read, and then ask questions. You also have to remember the M9 is a 64 bit phone, so there will be new challenges.

sure. of course its not rocket science. Ya Everyone knows "Search first, read read read, and then ask questions" but the problem is conflicting info. and Just that the Sammy threads' instructions IMO generally were ALOT clearer and less conflicting and confusing info. and its not just me, I noticed alot of other users had noted same experience in the HTC M9 threads. Its no wonder people keep asking same questions still. IMO If the OP's of alot of the threads were "clearer" and more" complete" in their first instructions, I am sure we would have alot less people in confusion asking things like "help me/ hold my hand to restore to stock/I followed instructions but got error still why". And the biggest problem is the fact that the M9 was a disaster for htc. so as a result, the M9 threads are much more quiet, fewer users, and less active than Sammy threads. My only hope is with the second-hand market forming in the next 6 months, that the M9 threads will pick up, hence more custom roms and updates, when people buy it , when its cheaper.
Samsung is a much bigger and more known company. It's phone sales are huge compared to HTC and that will relate to much more active forums. I understand what you are saying, but like I said every device will be different. When I had my Nexus 4, rooting and flashing roms was a piece.of cake. I would just be careful about over complaining. Nobody here is obligated to help anyone. Be nice and someone will eventually come along with the needed help.
Ive recently done the same. been with sammy for about 4 years, now ive picked the HTC... why? Theyre much more in touch with their users demands. Sure the processes for unlocking / rooting / s-off are a lot different and require you to do some work, but once you get to grips with it it's easy enough and makes you feel more in touch with those sort of processes on your phone.
Also to address the issue mentioned above, the sammy s4 etc have been out a lot longer than the m9 which has only been out a few months so of course it will be quiter in here to start with. *fingers crossed* some more devs will pop up and fill our lives with joy.
The only thing i'm worried about with my recent upgrade to htc m9(literally a few days ago) is that within the year it is going to be outdated by a new device but such is life when you buy in to a 2 year contract lol.
Have faith.
As mentioned above also, at first I was quite daunted by the processes of rooting etc for the HTC and was unsure i'd made the right choice. I considered falling back to sammy but even after this last couple of days i've thought to myself I have made the right choice.
Thanks for all the helpful comments. I am a voracious reader, and I would never attempt to do any type of upgrade without quite a bit of research first. I pretty much have my mind made up on the M9, but AT&T has jacked up their upgrade process. This is a company phone & we are on a legacy plan. Until my boss & I get all that worked out with AT&T, I'll be using my trusty S5. AT&T really ticked me off yesterday when I was in the store, so much that we might even look at an alternate carrier.
Thanks again for the help.

Unsolicited advice, if you're going to root and install custom rom and leaked updates, you're better off sticking with a GSM carrier (AT&T or T-Mobile) over Sprint or Verizon. Sprint and Verizon users almost always have to wait for carrier release to get updates. AT&T works with all of the international updates that are released. T-Mobile does too, but they also offer Wi-Fi calling which may not always work with international roms and firmware. just my .02

You missed the point and Who's over complaining? Obviously no one is obligated to help here or any other thread on xda. My point was if someone wanted to buy an M9 he/she should think carefully before taking the 'dive', and it is a fact the M9 threads are much quieter, right? and did you read the posts the urls I posted above? if you look at the urls i posted previous post you will see alot of other users were confused. I wonder why? They had 'searched and searched' but were still confused, I wonder why?. My question was , why do some threads have to make something so simple sound so complex.? After reading hundreds of post from back to front, I realized that had some posts or more detail/explanation been added to the OP of some threads, quite alot of the confusion could have bee avoided in first place, in M9 threads generally. That was the main difference I observed between sammy threads and M9 threads. I dont hate my M9,but I expected alot more from it. The screen display is lacklustre, some devices have a dead pixel problem, and flashing firmware is a nightmare for some experienced sammy users from what I hv read so far, but yes the sound is excellent on m9 and speed is fast (i know S6 has much higher antutu score but I dont believe those scores completely). but for now I do hope that there will be gradual improvement for M9 as more people get involved when the device becomes cheaper. I Just felt need to point out to any sammy user, think very carefully before you switch to htc M9 , if they want go down the customization route. If you dont want pull your hair out then stick with sammy, but if you are up for a challenge and some headaches in the beginning, definitely go for M9. Because it can only get better.

I kind of understand what you're saying, but I think the reason a lot of advice seems contradictory is because little variables like S-off/on, region, carrier, GSM/CDMA, etc make a difference in the steps you have to take. Also, in a lot of those posts you linked to they were trying to accomplish different things. For example, many people want to upgrade firmware without being S-off and there are several different ways to accomplish this and at the same time it may not be possible at all for that user (because it depends on their carrier/region).
Many of us who do like to help people find that it's like pulling teeth sometimes to get enough information to even offer a suggestion to people. It really shouldn't be that hard to say 1) exactly what you'd like to accomplish and 2) exactly what steps you've already taken. Finally, and I highly doubt this is unique to the M9 forum, but it's extremely frustrating when either someone just asked the same question a few posts back, or the answer is clearly spelled out in the op.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this. Wondering Perhaps the M9 threads should be divided into sections for this or that carrier 'only'? Eg Verizon users only , international users only etc ..would it work? It might repeat some instructions , but it would make it more clear for people and save alot of the confusion or contradictions we see? Ie this is your device and you can do this and you cant do this, and this way is better than that way because you are xxx carrier, and this is the reason. I am just thinking especially of the new M9 users to come. Is there a way to Make it simple and clear. As you and others have said, its not difficult once you know how. And at same time , we can try to not sounding over complicated or confusing to them....some guys are really very helpful in the M9 threads, as example , after I got a reply I thought, this is so simple(!), why was it made to sound so complicated in first place? Or I thought why didnt someone put that in the OP? Would have saved alot of people alot of time. But I guess M9 is new, threads are relatively new, I get that , and I am sure we will see more and more interest in M9 , and hence more activity in the threads, as it picks up momentum...

Is there an International section? And if there are already different sections for different US carriers , I wonder why are all those confused guys asking in the general forum?

Probably because there is more activity here in the unbranded forum. There are differences with how the various branded phones need to be rooted and roms flashed. Not all the instructions here will work unless you properly debrand/convert the phone.

Which explains some of the confusion..
Just curious, once the US users from AT&T or whatever have debranded to say developer WWE europe .401 firmware, how is the modem/radio/baseband after? Reception and wifi no problems at all or do they have to flash their local carrier radio again to get good signal? (I ask because my S4 was on Poland or German firmware i think but it still worked great in Asia).
For me, HTC are the pinnacle of devices when you plan to root, believe me its a walk in the park, not only that but the community is friendlier, larger and the level of development and developers is second to none. Take a look at my SIG to see the phones I've had, don't get me wrong the s5 is a special device and I used it underwater for many hours and I loved it but I've always missed HTC when I've been away from it, even the note 4 wasn't enough to keep me away..
The choice at the end of the day is yours..for me there is no choice, the m9 is by far and away the best device there is right now, not without faults but that just adds to its character.

Some users have reported the need to flash the radio that comes with the stock firmware. I believe it could be location specific. Best thing to do is if works, don't try to fix it.

I get your point. Mayb alot of us were spoilt with odin and ease of flashing and customizing sammy devices. My S4 was on CM12.1 lollipop 5.1.1 ages ago , and I didnt need do go back to stock to any 'update firmware' at all when i went from previous lollipop to 5.1.1 so when I got my m9 i was like wtf? ( I thought to myself: Why Gotta go back to stock to take update and then all this s-on s-off cid supercid silly stuff. ) LOL. It didnt help that i had to factory reset my phone 6 times in first few days to get everything working. Mayb i was unlucky as i even had the annoying dead pixel problem in m9. I believe a few other users had same problems. I am sure my m9 gonna get better. I was close to selling it right away, but will stick with it for now. You guys have convinced me its not as bad as it seems. As i said, it can only get better as more users buy the m9 (when it becomes cheaper).
Btw how does the note4 compare with m9 speed wise? Just asking.

How customizable is this phone?

Hello guys!
I had experiences with several brands. I gave up Samsung due to the Knox Counter and Sony due to the DRM keys. The best experience so far I had with my late Nexus 5! How easy is to customize the HTC 10? I never had HTC's before. Regarding ease of customization, bootloader unlock and warranty how does it go? I am about to return an Axon 7 and maybe exchange it with a 10.
Thanks in advance!

Assuming you have the Verizon model....Once you use Sunshine to S-Off this phone the world is your oyster. Great/robust dev community and help/support/guides to assist you through anything you want to do with your phone.
The combination of the above and that HTC makes what I think are the most gorgeous looking and well built phones...it's been a win win for me since my Thunderbolt lol

I've had a huge amount of devices, ( look at my sig and you'll see) and I've always come back to HTC, reason being is that they offer something a little different, but what's more they always have the most talented developers and the oldest serving, on XDA, Villain rom, etc, they always come up with the goods.
Not to mention that the root, unlocking of the bootloader and s-off (if you s-off) is reversible. Samsung is not, as it has an efuse chip as does the nexus too AFAIK.
There literally isn't anything you can't change on this device and with pretty much any other htc device, if you've had a htc before and gone on to something else, Sony or Sammy are good examples, you'll always be looking back over the fence, and when a new HTC comes out you'll just hate your current device, eg: I got rid of a six month old nexus 6P for this 10
Just unlock the bootloader, s-off if you must or want to, I believe that you can flash firmwares easier with it switched off, it's £20 so not great but it always works, install a custom recovery and flash away.
In terms of roms, Venom probably offers the most comprehensive list of tweaks and mods but LeeDroid is equally as good and as customizable, perhaps not with the length of venom tweaks but still great. Other roms I can guess are similar and when CM is completely fixed, well start seeing CM, AOSP and similar roms heading for us too.
In short, the answer to your question is a huge yes, I don't think I'll ever get another Samsung or Sony again, nothing wrong with them, they're just not for me and I'll miss HTC if I do.
Stripped, themed, ghostpeppered, and running like a bat out of hell....

I hope I can piggy-back off of this thread just a bit.
When you refer to the developer community for HTC, are you referring particularly to here on XDA-Developers, or in general everywhere? I'm thinking of getting an HTC 10, but I'm wondering the best/simplest way to keep it going with Android updates well past HTC's stated support period. I haven't done anything with my HTC Incredible S, but I'm looking to be a bit more proactive with my next phone. What are some of the more stable ROMs that you--or anyone else, for that matter--would recommend to keep this phone continually updated for years to come? Longevity is important to me.

Long time Samsung user here. I got my US unlocked HTC 10 a few months ago. Best phone I ever had. Would not even consider an S7 in comparison.
The two primary Sense-based Roms for the 10 are Viper and LeeDroid. I've tried both and prefer Viper. I think that would be your long-term solution. Get an unlocked 10 if you can afford to for maximum flexibility and choice of service providers. Unlock the bootloader, S-Off, and flash Viper. You can't go wrong in my opinion.
BTW, this is just a general discussion thread. Each Rom, Kernel, recovery, etc etc have their own dedicated threads where you'll find in-depth info.

Are there any inherent advantages of a Sense-based ROM in terms of stability or ease of installation? Sorry for such a pedestrian question, but is there anything as simple as good ol' Nexus-style vanilla Android, or is that something that's even too easy to be asking about?
Thanks guys, still considering the 10. Now I am between the 10, 6P and Pixel XL. The painful fact is that I am currently with no phone. When I went to return the Axon, there were no 10s in stock at the store. The wait for the Pixel is just killing me! And to worsen things a bit, I just ran into a 128 GB Nexus 6P. I am a real sucker for OLED screens you, know? That is why I still didn't buy the 10.

Gawd, I could never go back to stock. Most people want a custom Rom firstly to get rid of all the bloatware installed by their service providers. Apps you'll never use, sitting there taking up space and even running in the background. Then there is the customizing you can do to set up your phone just how you want it. However, HTC has promised us that they will be providing us with a Rom upgrade to Android 7 in a couple of months and that Rom may be nice as-is. Bottom line - if you want maximum control over your 10, go custom. If stock meets your needs stay with that.

I'm sorry, I may not have been clear. I was asking about a Sense-based ROM vs. stock Android (not stock Sense). I'd like it as simple, stripped down, and Nexus-like as possible, but I don't know how much tinkering each modder does with their various ROMs. I also want a ROM from a modder who will support it down the road for several Android versions, but I seem to have an answer to that question already. What I don't understand yet is the likelihood of stock/vanilla Android running smoothly on the HTC 10. Is that what's being called AOSP, or is that something else entirely?
(For what it's worth, I'd be getting the international version, called the M10h, I believe.)

AOSP is the Android Open Source Project. Yes, this is sometimes referred to as the "stock" Rom. Google provides the code base for the stock Rom. Various developers use this code base and then add their own code enhancements to produce an extended version of the stock Rom. Most custom Roms are Cyanogenmod-based. This is the company that has put their particular twist on the stock Rom. A Sense-based Rom is yet another enhanced version of the stock Rom. Both use the same AOSP code base and customize it in various ways and for various phones.
Some people actually do prefer the more standard stock Rom for various reasons. It is simpler and typically more robust for dealing with the limited and specific tasks it was designed for. A good custom Rom can be just as robust as stock in every way, but also allows the user to do much more with the phone. It can be overclocked to run much faster, have better audio, a highly customizable user interface, and so on.
Viper, on the Sense-based side, and Resurrection Remix on the Cyanogenmod-based side are both better than the stock Rom in my view and people using those Roms get many more updates to their Roms via the developers than stock Rom users do. Some developers are still producing custom Roms for the Samsung SII -- a very old phone that Samsung dropped support for years ago.
Check this out for the HTC 10:

Can I assume a Sense-based ROM will have a better chance of everything working properly (ie. camera, NFC, audio, etc.) since it's starting off with something further down the fork in AOSP designed specifically for the HTC 10? Or am I misunderstanding how ROMs work?

Haha, you're really doing your research.
Yes, a sense based ROM is less likely to have bugs, however bugs are usually listed in the OP of every rom thread. A matured AOSP ROM won't have anything broken, but things may not work as well or as intended by HTC.
I think sense based is the way to go with this device, lots of good features HTC has developed that work well with the phone like the camera application and blinkfeed. Not to mention the polished look of the phone in general and the underrated theme store, it just works well together. You'd lose all of that with AOSP, not so much key features not working.

Yes. It's my most annoying characteristic, according to my wife. Now I just have to find a developer who keeps things simple & stable, and who will support it until 2021.
Thanks for your replies. And I apologize to gibawatts for hijacking this thread a bit. I hope it was still useful for you, too.
Did you guys decide?
It's still $150 off, which assisted me in my decision to go from the Nexus 5 to the htc 10 (and a nice, even doubling for us OCD types).
My short answer: the htc 10 is ever-so-slightly less customisable than the Nexus 5; I've installed everything on it that I had on the Nexus (SuperSU, Xposed, Gravitybox, Xprivacy, AdAway, etc.). N-ify works on it.
My only "issue" so far is that GravityBox can't remove the Calculator and Extreme Power Saver quicktile htc put there..real fine points here. (I've only had the thing 2 days, so there may be more but no show-stoppers for a purist like me). Sense 8 is more like an alternative launcher than an overhaul like TouchWiz or old versions of Sense. Wife likes it (coming from her N5/NovaLauncher) and I'm giving it a whirl.
Manual firmware updates would be the only caveat AFAICT but that is still better than what I had with N5: OTAs broke and I just never installed them due to lack of interest...not a habit I want to carry with me, however. My point being that the Nexus 5 was actually more of a hassle to me to update than what this seems like it would be (though I've not tested it yet but there's much discussion on the procedure here).
Wife is attached to OLED (SIII had a wonderful display) but she likes the htc 10 display and did not like the N5 display.
I love the feedback you guys got/gave here. This here is a model XDA thread.
I would just like to add that HTC's Sense ROM is quite bare-boned compared to other non-Nexus OEMs. Compared to the Axon, it'll look almost like a Nexus device.
Everyone else pretty much covered the other important things. I'd like to point out that CM/AOSP/Vanilla ROMs for the HTC 10 are still a bit down the road and they still need quite a bit of work, so when you get it, expect to either stay with Sense, or Sense-based custom ROMs for at least the next few months. No complaints on that from my side. Even if you do eventually flash CM/AOSP/Vanilla ROMs, I'll wager that you'll end up downloading some of HTC's apps, like Camera, Gallery, and Music. They blow away vanilla Android apps and 3rd party alternatives.

ZTE being mod-hostile turned me off to them; they have to establish a solid history of unlock/mod-friendliness for me to even look at them. (No, a press release stating that they would, in the future, answer questions from CyanogenMod folks to develop their ROM doesn't win me over in any way whatsoever.)
I surmised that the OnePlus 3 was too customised to be considered a Nexus spiritual successor (it was the phone I wanted to like/buy). Really, they only need to make good hardware and just use already-made AOSP and spend dev time getting drivers and such primo to have a winner (and with lower overhead) rather than trying to reinvent the wheel that nobody will want. It's like they're trying to sorta be Nexus and sorta be Sense/TouchWiz/et al but is there really a market for that? Is there really no market for Nexus? (I dunno...the Pixel thing has me befuddled and the no-more-Nexus thing has me ferhoodled.)
So, yeah, I'm liking the htc 10, which, being both funny and sad, I didn't even look at. My wife mentioned it and the $150 off, so we took a look and got'em. (I was still soured by my Evo 3D experience that led me to use then-Best Buy's 30-day return policy)
One more tid-bit I neglected to mention earlier: I'm glad I got the unlocked/dev version...no issue getting official RUUs all official-like, officially. I don't ever want to deal with "carrier" stuff.
P.S. Good to know about the camera, gallery, and music apps. Those are important to my wife (I'm happy with those being "functional" but also happy to just have the same software between us..easier to maintain and to answer her questions).
