[Q] Notification Priority Setting Switch: Change to Silent/Vibrate/Sound? - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I just got my OnePlus 3 a couple of days ago and am very happy with it overall.
The only thing I don't like about Android right now, is the confusing and limited Notification Priority Setting feature. It's just impossible to set it up correctly.
I just want to be able to quickly change between Silent / Vibrate / Sound.
I'm aware that you can change between Sound and Vibrate with the volume keys, but I would prefer it if I could somehow set up the physical switch on the OnePlus 3 to do that.
Is there any app / mod out there that could do this?

I would be interested in this as well. Also, I feel like the order of the slider should be flipped with all notifications at the top and no notifications at the bottom next to the volume buttons.

Agreed. An option to reverse the order would be greatly appreciated as well.

Can they be reversed though? Putting the "all notifications/alerts" on the top and "none" at the bottom?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nqk.vibratemodeextended
Appears to work to substitute priority mode with vibration mode, unfortunately no option to reverse the slider. This developer's other app that includes that reverse feature does not work at all yet.
Edit: I can get Tasker to detect all positions of the slider but I don't know a way to set the settings for reversal. Simply making the top slider position set Do Not Disturb to "All" does not have an effect, nor does setting the bottom position to "None".

Yeah would be great to change this from the settings menu and not in Tasker... Googling seems like alot of people been asking for it since the oneplus 2

Hi, Need some help. I can't seem to find any I interruption menu within sounds and notifications? Was there an update which replaced that?

I use the app "Alert Slider". You need exposed installer to use it (but its awesome anyways). Its super stable and very customizable.
Options:
Reverse slider. (Top to bottom: All / Interruption / None)
* Custom action for each position:
- All
- Interruption
- None
- Airplane mode
- Flashlight
- Vibrate
- Do nothing

Custom Slider by Wheathon has many options including reversing the order. You can set your BT on-off, WiFi on-off, torch on-off etc in addition to the volume settings, and all using the slider's three positions. But it requires Xposed. And it will work only on OOS and not on the community build.

I find that app quite weird. For example if you want to add a torch, you need to assign one to on and an other one to off. Same for Bluetooth, cellular data, wifi ect. There is no point, we only got 3 positions. The app I suggested turns the flashlight one when the slider is on a position and turns off when you move the slider to a other position.

The dev is endlessly repeating in his thread that each position of the slider can have umpteen number of actions because many people have not understood it correctly.
For eg. if you assign torch-on to the top and torch-off to the middle, it doesn't mean that two positions of the slider are lost leaving you with only the bottom position for other actions. You can assign wifi-off, BT-on etc to the top position in addition to the torch-on and assign wifi-on, BT-off etc to the middle one in addition to torch-off. There are 24 actions possible in that app and any number of them can be assigned simultaneously to any position.
But I think that in the other app which you mentioned, only one action per position is possible.

Hi friend, this free app gives to you the solution and dont need root:

Jelly Bean & vibrate for notifications

Has anyone else noticed volume settings are even worse then they were for ICS? Not only are ringer + notification volumes still linked, Google even linked the system volume to them now as well. And more annoying: how on earth does one disable vibrate for notifications? The only setting to control vibrate I seem to have is "vibrate when ringing" in the sound menu. Unchecking this one does nothing for notifications.
I use Audiomanager Pro for my sound profiles, and the vibrate options you can set for each profile have no effect. The only way to disable vibrate seems to be to enable silent mode. But I don't want that, when I'm at home my GNEX lies on my desk in the room and I simply do not want it to vibrate for ringer & notifications.
Or am I somehow overlooking something really obvious here?
It is a pain in the a$$ but I found a pretty cool solution. Might not be what you were looking for but "easy profiles" in the market will let you unlink all those. It has a 2 week full trial. You can even reinstall the trial again if you want. Plus it allows all kinds of triggers and rules etc. Almost like tasker ... except for notifications.

So, if you're looking to control the vibrations for each app, any application that supports notifications should have a setting inside it with semi-fine-grain controls for notifications. These controls will generally allow you to specify whether you want a sound or vibration notification, and when to initiate them. For example, in Gmail->settings->[your email]->vibrate & ringtone there is a setting called "vibrate" in which you can specify if you would always like a vibration, only while in silent mode, or never. Hopefully this answers your question.

Thanks for the reply but it doesn't I'm afraid. I know you can control notification settings per app, but doing so for 10+ apps every time I want to temporarily disable notification vibrate sort of defeats the purpose. What I want is a Gingerbread like setting for vibrate for notifications: one setting to disable/enable vibrate for notifications that overrides individual app settings.
I'm beginning to think Google simply does not want to allow such settings any more, but I'm surprised not more users are annoyed by this. Linking volumes was a bad call, but removing control regarding vibrate settings is an even worse one imho.

I just updated my Nexus S to Jelly Bean and was very sad to discover this problem. Previously, I could use Audio Manager Pro to control whether notifications vibrated or not (both with volume on and off). Now, Audio Manager Pro's vibration settings seem to do nothing. I have to go into the individual app's notification settings to choose whether it vibrates or not. As you said, with multiple apps, this is unacceptable.
I emailed the Audio Manager dev to point this flaw out. I'm not sure if it is an unfixable Jelly Bean deficiency or if the Audio Manager app just needs to be updated. But I surely hope it is the latter and not the former.
I have to hand it to RIM... one thing they had right was notifications profiles built into the OS that were vastly superior to anything I've seen on Android or iOS. And the notification LED. It still blows my mind that more Android devices don't have a bright, visible notification LED.

Yes I totally agree regarding the profiles you can set on BlackBerry devices. I also emailed the dev of audiomanager, hopefully the jelly bean API still allows more control over vibrate than the Android settings menu suggests.

AUGH I just clued into this tonight after weeks on JB. I can't find any way to globally disable all vibrations at night. What the hell was Google thinking? Now I might have to put the damn thing on airplane mode just to get some freaking sleep.
Yeah it looks like we need need to live with this or flash a ROM that has modified sound/vibration settings to a normally usable level (read: the Gingerbread implementation).

For now, my compromise is to set Tasker to disable account sync when the phone is both face down and plugged in. Since Gmail is the most common source of vibration, it should do the trick. In the morning when I flipped it over and woke it, my e-mails came in about 5 seconds.

Wtf was Google thinking? First linking ringer and notification volumes. Now making it near impossible to control vibration globally with a profiles app.
Google is really moving backwards in this area and I can think of no reasonable explanation as to why.

Exactly. It's a mystery what problem the Google devs think they needed to fix. Gingerbread handled volumes and vibration just fine. Don't fix what isn't broken.

They were asked about this at Google I/O, supposedly it was too confusing for some users. They basically avoided a response when it was brought up how it is now impossible to set, for example, navigation and music to both have comfortable volumes at the same time. It's like they know it sucks but they still won't fix it, it kind of pissed me off when I was watching it.

Would it be possible for a custom ROM, say AOKP or CM10, to revert the vibration and volume behaviours back to being more like they were in GB?

Oh I somehow missed that. Bad argumentation imho. If you can understand how 3 volume sliders (ICS/JB) work, you don't suddenly get confused if there are 5 sliders (GB). All this does is annoy people who want to control individual volumes. Restricting them by linking is *not* a usability improvement because it's less confusing.
"Three sliders? Ok, I got it". "Five sliders? ZOMG I'm confused!"
Google should have made it at least possible to unlink in 'advanced settings' or something. Heck I'd be happy to edit a bulky.config file if that would unlink.

AOKP and CM have the volumes unlinked, according to the specs and users on XDA. I'm guessing it's also possible to get the 'old' vibration behavior back as well. However I'm very happy with vanilla android, and flashing a custom rom just to get this one issue fixed always seemed overkill to me. But as soon as CM10 gets in a more stable state, I just might flash it.
turn off vibrate alerts in Jellybean - I fixed it
dunno how I missed something so simple but I service provider was able to help me fix the problem of the vibrate settings being on for all alerts and ringtones. for the ringtone, its in advanced settings and you can uncheck vibrate there. for the other apps, you have to go into the settings via the app not via the phone settings>apps and do it for each app, so for example, I use go chat for text messages, so I had to go into the app itself and then go to its settings and then turn off vibrate, same for email and facebook. and it worked, its fixed.
Yeah but that's still useless for those of us who just want to toggle all vibration at once, especially with an automated program like Tasker.

Have you tried Sound Manager from the market? It allows you to set vibrate for all notifications via the advanced menu.
I have to be honest that I only tried this in cm10 and in stock ics. I expect it to work in stock jb too.

No it does not work in stock JB. CM10 must have put back what Google got rid of. There is no more global vibrate toggle in stock JB.
I'm a little late on this one...
- slide down the "notification bar" from the top
- 3rd icon from the left ("speaker")
- this button has three states (ringtone / no ringtone + vibration / no ringtone + no vibration)
// EDIT
another option:
- keep the power button pressed
- select one of the above mentioned sound options at the bottom

Sorry what you're describing has nothing to do with the feature Google removed. This is about the ability to globally disable vibration, independently from sound. None of the options you listed include "sound on, vibrate off".

What does and does not work with GravityBox

I have the Verizon G4, and I have Xposed and GravityBox working successfully. However, I ran into a few issues that I want to share, as well as share what I can confirm works. As we all know, GravityBox has a big disclaimer that it is meant for AOSP or stock-based ROMs, and not for heavily skinned ROMs like what our G4 has.
Confirmed working:
Changes to the status bar (remove icons, change battery icon, add data monitor, etc.)
Enabling all rotations
Lockscreen modification to automatically unlock after successful PIN entry
Confirmed not working:
Media tweak to allow separate ringtone and notification volume (this simply doesn't make any changes to volume controls)
Go to dialer automatically when opening phone
If you want to add to this list, simple comment below and I will update the OP. Hopefully this will help others from making possible bootloop or freezing issues.
Not Working: Go to dialer automatically when opening phone. It still goes right to recent for me.
Sometimes Works: Skip tracks with volume keys when screen is off. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I enabled the quick unlock under lockscreen tweaks. Works for me..

Were you able to remove the sim icon with the question mark with Gravity when using your T-Mobile sim?
Is anybody using it with smart unlock? For some reason, with gravity box installed, smart unlock did not work for me. Messed with all lock screen settings to no avail, including trying to disable all
I've tried all the following tweaks:
Statusbar tweaks- all the signal cluster, battery, and clock settings work. Data traffic monitor works. Ongoing notification blocker works. Disable peek too.
Display tweaks- allow all rotations works.
Media tweaks- "volume keys skip track" works. Some people have reported intermittent function but it works flawlessly for me. More music volume steps works. Reorient volume keys works. Disabling safe headset media volume works. Volume panel timeout works.
Navigation keys actions- all these settings work. To edit the square icon you have to use the recent key option.
Miscellaneous tweaks- recent tasks RAM bar with adjustments works. Headset actions work. Enable screenshot delete works.
All ultimate notification control settings work.
I'm sure other tweaks work but I haven't tried them.
can anyone get quicksettings to work? i haven't used gravitybox before. it seems pretty great, but i cant get that to work, maybe it isnt compatible.
i really want a separate quick-settings vs notification panel like I had in my m8/viperone. the g4 is slick, but i can't stand the quicksettings/notifications screen.
Is there any way to have the data/LTE icon disappear when connected to WiFi?
Expandable volume panel
Enabling Gravity Box (5.3.4)-->Media tweaks-->Expandable volume panel doesn't work. In fact, it makes your volume panel not show what level your volume is set/changed to when you tap a volume button. This is on VS98613B, and also did it on VS98611A.

Do not disturb settings / overriding alert slider

I really like my new Oneplus 3, even its size, which I thought would be unbearable. But after using it for a couple days I have at last found something that I really dislike. From what I can tell, the do not disturb settings from vanilla Android have been nixed in favor of the alert slider. Thus one cannot automate times during which, say, the phone allows no notifications or allows only priority level notifications. Nor can do not disturb settings be activated from, say, a widget on the device: the alert slider must be used for everything. I presume the reason is that they don't want the settings to conflict with the slider (eg, going into a do not disturb mode when the slider is in the bottom most position).
However, I would like to be able to control these things from software. Is there any solution involving rooting? The only thing I don't want to do is install a new ROM (I don't want to lose the dash charging).
I am really interested about this too. Loosing the automated acttions such as DnD and Night mode are a setback for me.
Are there any ROMs out there which have at least tackled the DnD issue? The slider could be used then for something else (lock portrait mode, lamp light etc...)
Most apps and widgets I've tried since posting simply don't work, with one exception. I've found that the app Do Not Disturb by Cabooze (sorry, can't link) replicates the missing functionality and seems to mute notifications even when the alert slider is set in the bottom position. This is really not ideal (I would trade the alert slider for stock do not disturb in a second) but is an adequate stop gap.
Thanks for the info, that app seems to be working. But the feeling is the same. I fee like back in the days the function did not exist in stock, looking for tricks/apps and wondering if what I found will be reliable... still hoping we see soon solid custom roms which also offer a solution for all the missing automation.
You can surely use tasker for this...
i've designed an Alert Slider software override (non-root) for the OnePlus 3 (probably works on the newer OnePlus phones as well) It allows for scheduled setting of sound profiles. Need some advice on interest and how to Beta release.

Do not disturb with Tasker? Is there a way to make it work?

I set two time profiles to control dnd setting automatically for the night.
First I set it to priority. Second profile then resets it to none as that removes the priority icon from toolbar. I realised that all sounds are gone after that.
If I set it to all, priority icon stays in status bar.
I tried also to do just a single profile with ending time, but that also left priority icon to the bar.
Is there a way to get priority mode to work with tasker?
What are you trying to achieve? If it's setting DnD for the night automatically, you don't need tasker for it. Have you tried using automatic rules in DnD settings?

Adjusting volume is not that good.. Nothing comes through with that. I'd like to be reachable by phone for known callers. I quess we have to wait cyanogen to fix the rom
I've had the same issue. Tasker will remove the 'priority' status but screws up the volumes. The only way round it at the moment is to leave slider in normal, use tasker to set priority when needed, then on return to 'normal' from tasker move slider to mid position then back to normal. This seems to reset volumes back to normal. Hopefully oneplus can sort out this DND issue and allow software to override the slider.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using Tapatalk
I've found a way. Leave slider in mid position (priority) and use the inbuilt priority settings to allow normal audio to be heard. I've got tasker to set DND to priority and volume to 3. When full DND is needed, set tasker DND to 'alarms'. This kills all audio except alarms. Use tasker to go back to DND 'priority' for normal use. This does leave a constant priority notification at the top but audio seems to work. By using tasker/audio/silent mode, you can create a vibrate only mode that stops audio but keeps vibrate notifications with respect to the priority mode settings at a system level.

Mine seems to work. On the alert slider settings make sure you have calls and messages set to 'everyone' under the priority settings. For other apps like Gmail or WhatsApp, go to 'app notifications' under sound and notifications and set them to notify when in priority mode. This is a bit of a pain but gets over the software controlled notifications issue until oneplus can sort something out.

Aha! Key was to set all apps under "app notifications" to notify when in priority! Now i think its working!
Many thanks!
I know it's a kind of trolling but somebody may not realise this - by using CM13 you have the best of both worlds built in.
You have stock android DND (automatic) and you can also customise what the button does. [I don't use neither of these features but noticed them in CM settings panel while setting up my device]
Hey @yourmate
Anything else missing/not working properly beside Dash Charge on CM? I am waiting to make sure it is stable (one thing I cannot afford are random reboots). For example, I am not using them, but curious, are the Op3 gestures available or gone? (V and O to enable flashlight/Camera - CM's anywhere gesture was not great I thought)
Automated DnD is for me the main issue on Op3, and I also liked CM's auto-brightness/Night mode. Kind of feel going back several years haha

I can also confirm everything seems fixed in OOS 3.2.2. I can set the alert slider to any position and then run a tasker task to set vibrate only, all audio or silent mode. The slider can be used to override the tasker setting but tasker can be run again to re establish the desired sound profile.

Vibrate Only Mode?

Hi,
So I've had the phone for a couple days now, and I love it. But today I received the nougat update and I have one little (major) issue:
When in any of the none-silent notification modes, it's set to ringer only. I used to have it on vibrate only, mostly in priority mode with vibrate, so it wouldn't ring. How do I get this back? Putting the volume all the way down doesn't change it to vibrate anymore, and nor does tapping on the actual bell icon.
Thanks
I have the same problem. After update I accidentally turned volume up and now I can't turn it back to vibrate. My level of sound stops at 14% and I can't make it vibrate-only. Any ideas?

This doesn't solve the issue. You still can't have the phone vibrate to only priority notifications.
With the slider on the top position (with vibration enabled in the settings) the phone will vibrate for every notification. And if you want to switch to a "drop dead" mode with no notifications at all you would always need to go in the settings to change the vibration option of the silent profile.
Major step back by oneplus.
I want that exact same thing too. So:
Silent - silence all except alarm (with option to vibrate)
Do not disturb - all the current options + option to vibrate for the ones enabled and no sound
Ring - standard mode. Sound for all + option to vibrate.
It's strange that they've missed such a common feature.
The functionality is moved to slider now. Turn the slider all the way up to silent mode and press the grear icon to select the vibration option.
Easy. Love it much more now.

Such a glaring omission by OnePlus.
I have solved the problem by installing Ringer Modes. This app allows you to put a tile in your quick settings that will change ring modes, including Vibrate mode!

That's not an omission. That's how it's meant to be in Nougat update. Now people will actually use the Alert Slider more often.
Personally, I love this implementation much more than before.

This seems to be terrible functionality to me. With my old Nexus phone all I needed to do was 1) Hold the Volume Down button and it would go into vibrate only mode. All it took was one button click. Now you are saying I need to: 1) Move the Alert Slider 2) Click the gear 3) Enable vibration 4) Exit out of settings page to continue what I was doing.
Four steps whereas before it only took one. That is a enormous step back in functionality in my mind.

You only have to do it once, brother Once the slider is set to vibrate on silent mode, you only have to touch the slider. It's quicker than 'holding' the volume button.
Cheers.

Actually, you're right. I just tried that and it works. Now that I think about it I'm not sure why I originally assumed I'd need to select vibrate every single time.
Not bad at all just a little different than I'm used to.
I don't understand the functionality, can you explain again?
When i have vibration enabled in silent mode, how do i quickly enable and disable vibration? (before all I had to do was move the slider)
I think LOS roms still have the feature that you need
