[Q] Does the G4 artificially sharpen the contents of the screen? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was originally considering picking up a G3, but decided against doing so because of the many reports of artificial "over-sharpening" of the picture quality. Since G4s have come down in price, they are now on my radar as well, so my question for the community is simple - does the G4 suffer from the same artificial sharpening that the G3 does?

On the camera it does unless you set it for raw. Ive taken many night shots that have been butchered by the camera and the prossessing

I'm talking about the screen; not the camera (although if the camera's pictures are degraded worse than comparable devices, it is important to consider also).

U should more be considering about the bootloop issue in the g4 if u buy a used phone or new...buy g3 tmobile version only there is no bootloop in g3

Lol, off topic; let's get back to the question at hand

Lol, not using TMobile. And while I now know that the artificial sharpening problem on the G3 can be defeated, my question still remains if it is an issue on the G4.

That's a bummer. I'm guessing the situation isn't much better on the Verizon variant of the phone, so it looks like the G4 is probably out of the question as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for the information though.

Mate don't listen to these guys, they don't know what they're talking about...
The G4 does *NOT* suffer from G3's sharpening problems (personal experience as well as many reviews, check Anandtech's which is the best review site) and new G4's almost don't suffer from bootloop problems.
The display is brilliant, the phone is great, good battery and nice custom ROM support. If you want a G4 definitely buy it, now that price is low it has terrific value for money
P.S.: the camera as well is simply superb, just check "G4 Picture Samples" thread here on XDA

The plot thickens

Interesting. Do you know how the custom Rom and kernel support is with regard to the Verizon variant of the G4? I was just on the G3 forums and there is apparently a lot of hoops that have to be jumped through in order to get custom recovery on a Verizon G3. Is it any easier and better on the G4? Are there any noteworthy pitfalls?

I honestly don't know, but I suggest you buy an unlocked H815 international model since it's for sure the most supported.

The G4 has great value for money now. The camera is superb. The screen is amazing and no it doesn't over sharp anything. This was only on G3. Battery life is OK nothing super but definitely not terrible. Newer G4s do not suffer from the Bootloop. The phone only misses a fingerprint reader. If you want root and custom ROMs but the international H815 which you can unlock.

VS986 or bust

The H815 is a no-go for Verizon and Verizon MVNOs. It's gotta be the VS986. I'll check in on the Verizon-specific forums for details on that. Otherwise, I'd have to shell out the extra money for a Moto X Pure Edition, which is currently hovering at just below $200 on the used market; hopefully it and the G4 (whichever I decide to go with) drop off by the time upgrade season rolls around in the spring.

Newer G4's typically don't suffer from bootloops but they are still possible. Anyways LG does change it under warranty terms if you are so unlucky to get a bootloop on a new G4, even if you have a custom ROM.

LG sold millions of G4 phones, a tiny few of those had the bootloop issue, and LG fixed them. And the reason that you buy an LG G4 is because it was the best phone overall, a year ago, and still is the best phone you can buy today, when you consider removable battery & memory card, camera, screen, audio quality etc. at ANY PRICE.

Tiny few ??? Ahem ahem its a manufacturing fault its bound to happen in every phone atleast with s/n 5xxx ....the blue print of g4 is exactly the same atleast for the older versions...so u are a bit exaggerated about tiny few of g4s while the reported are in millions..they r better options from the g4 like the moto droid turbo buy the 64gb version best phone best price better than g4 it is also cheaper than g4 u can get ot around 180US$ used

[Q] Expectations of US G4 root/unlocked bootloader?

I'm about to upgrade my Verizon account, and I'm trying to decide between the LG G4 and HTC One M9. Right now, rooting and bootloader unlocking are possible on the M9. Difficult; but possible. However, the G4 still lacks carrier-specific forums on XDA. I know that the G4 was only released on Verizon at the beginning of this month, but I would have expected to see more movement on its development by now.
Is it reasonable to think that the G4 will ever have root or bootloader unlock on Verizon? The G3 has an all-in-one toolkit, but that took a whole year. Then again there are rumors on here that LG might open up bootloader unlocks for all variants.
I want to want this phone so bad, but it's dead in the water if I'll be stuck on stock firmware without root for 2 years. Is it still just too early to expect anything and the hacks will likely flow soon? Or are things really moving slow? I'm not asking for an ETA. I'm just wondering if there's reasonable hope for anything to happen.
I'm in the same boat as you, but on at&t. I am planning on buying the G4 tomorrow. I think root will be here before too long; jcase has rooted the at&t variant but hasn't released the method, presumably because it is unsafe. I figure the worst case scenario is I get the G4 and wait it out, if no root by fall, sell the phone and buy the new Nexus 5 or whatever they'll call it.

I'd forgotten about jcase's news. I guess mostly I was just worried by the lack of carrier-specific forums. I've never seen it take this long for a flagship phone before.
I have 2 more weeks to make my choice. I may go your route.
We will get Root and Bootloader access, it is just a matter of time since the devs (or rather some of them) already have it and are working on making a safer method to do it.
As far as a direct unlock from LG, that is never going to happen. They have personally stated they have no plans to do the unlocker for any of the "older models" of the G4 (So no AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular, etc.).
While I do understand your concerns as Root is very important to most of us and it seems like an eternity waiting for it, but trust me, this device can certainly hold its own just based on its own merits.......Yes Root will be nice and bring forth welcome modifications and removal of bloatware, but in the mean time the phone is still an incredible piece of technology and is also a great feel in the hand.
Overall I would say get yourself the G4, you will not be sorry.

I'm a pretty heavy root app (and custom recovery) user. I like making regular nandroid backups. I use Titanium Backup all the time for so many different functions. I love my root-enabled Tasker profiles and apps like VideoReg Pro with save-to-SD capability. Plus, a bootloader unlocked phone just means so many more ROMs and a much simpler process to try them out.
I agree it's an amazing phone (hardware), but the software side of things is even more important to me. Thus my dilemma.

I fully understand, trust me I am the same way. I got my G4's on 6/17 and this is the longest I have ever owned a smartphone without Bootloader & Root Access.......It really sucked for me at first (as I did not know it was still locked down when I got it and had I known that before hand I honestly would have gone for the Moto N6 instead) after a week or so with the G4 though I am super happy with my decision and now I just see Root as being the eventual icing on an already fantastic cake.

You and me both, buddy. I ended up with the US991 because I was dumb and did not check the root status before I bought the G4 (Don't get me wrong I love the phone and everything, just should have done my research is all)
We technically already have root. It's just a matter of being safely packaged and released. I give it another month or 2 before we see a long hand method on how to root our phones without bricking them.
In all honesty the G4 is far superior to the m9 in just about every way, aside from the forward facing speaker of the m9.

That’s debatable. I prefer the smaller screen and resolution myself. I'd rather not sacrifice CPU/GPU cycles and battery life for pixels I can't even see. I mean, the G4 has 4x the pixels of my 24" monitor. That's just stupid
Then there's the snapdragon 810 in the M9 that some say is horrible, and others say is amazing. And yes, the stereo speakers would be nice.
If the M9 had a removable battery and the G4's camera, I wouldn't even be here. The camera is really important to me though, and the M9's looks like a toy compared to the G4's.

Oh the G4 is deff display overkill. And I'd be with the m9 personally if the camera was on par with the G4 and s6, even without a removable battery.
I went with the G4 for the camera and sd card. I have kids and taking a million pics of them are more important than hearing my ring tone and music louder without a Bluetooth speaker.
I prefer a largerish phone after my s5 and the G4 didn't really feel much larger aside from width a little.
Plus I got a free battery and 32gb SD card, so there's that too.

Yeah, we have pretty much the same requirements. Those kids move so fast, an average phone camera just won't cut it anymore. I'm tired of blurry pictures
I've used every Samsung Galaxy flagship until now. Forget Samsung and their Apple-chasing, anti-user policies. I need an SD card dangit!
Some phones take longer to get root than others, but being how this is LG's flagship, and LG has a growing followship, there will be root very soon. Just be patient! This phone kicks butt. I typically root to get easy tethering, ad removal, and bloatware removal, but this phone is damn good out of the box WITHOUT root! get it and don't look back! you won't regret it.

Thinking of moving to G4, would like your thoughts.

Hey all,
Currently a BB Passport owner and yes I do love my phone, However, the maps are not getting updated, its starting to get laggy, and BB making a push into android before deciding to just stay with IOT security. well I hope the priv does well but the slider would get chewed up in my line of work.
Thus here I am asking the following.
The G4 runs 808 which from what I've read overtime supersedes the 810 in performance due to heat and throttling. I was originally sold on the Sony Z5 because I work marine construction and figured with a good case the water resistance would proof nice and I wouldnt have to get a rugged phone whereby I lose a lot of performance.
Z5 has 810 and im personally leery of that chip since I read so many reports on it.
My attention then turned to the G4
from what i've read the phone has a nice camera, strong antenna and a nice leather back. Cool but, for me I need to know how it handles the weather. I plan on putting it in a defender case while at work, but it rains here on vancouver island A LOT. like inches a day sometimes and I may need to bust out my phone to calc board footage or weight of a lumber package or take a call or something.
Is the phone loud?
Is the phone going to be ok in a otterbox in those conditions? (I get OB is good for dropping, how about rain, the oops a puddle drop etc)
if these all look good, I may bite the bullet and grab one. Im really not excited to lose my keyboard on my passport but, some of the glitches im getting are over the top irritating.
Thanks all,
Jordan.
For the keyboard just install SwiftKey which beat any keyboard and you can set, personalized it to be more productive.
Put a thin case and it will be great.
It charges fast, the phone is loud.
Here is the thing. IF you do not care not having an unlocked bootloader for the G4, by all means, get the G4 since it is a fantastic device for average users. But if ever you'd gotten yourself an H815 EUR variant of the G4, absolutely get it!

Do you have any trouble with it?

camera
And does the it support the new Camera HAL v3?
Would be nice, to be able to take raw pictures
You can take Raw pictures on any G4 camera version, I thought. That isn't something new.
There aren't many custom roms because of the locked bootloaders. Fortunately the LG series really stopped me from being a flashaholic. Going back to stock AOSP leaves a lot to be desired.
We do have root and can flash custom stuff such as Xposed and Tweaks using apps such as Flashify. There just isn't a Custom Recovery for the locked models.

At least for the H815, it is possible to unlock the bootloader... but sounds very much like Samsung KNOX

Will be flashing CyanogenMod as soon as possible, if I am going to buy it.
I got one
I joined the family today. I'll wait for someone to open that bootloader. One I got the phone in my hands I was sold.
Buy it anyway. Stock is better than any AOSP or Cyanogenmod any day of the century, and you will probably get used to LG stock anyway.
No idea why anyone would want to ruin a device by installing buggy software such as AOSP or CM and also destroy camera experience.
Can't see any reason for me to root or install rom's on this phone, it's perfect with MM.
On a side note, it's very easy to fix yourself too with a quick youtube guide.

Hi, I'm from Brazil and the G4 that I have is H815P, don't know what this "p" means.. The software version is V10a...
You guy's could show me the right direction on how to look for root and kdz stuff? My H815P is similar or equivalent to the H815 (without the "P")?
Thanks

A little advice please: Should I purchase the G4 for not?

Ok so I've been doing some research and HAD narrowed my choice on purchasing a NEW G4 (either H811 or H815) off of eBay. That is till I'd ran across some a crap ton of reviews talking about the bootloop and reading that there is no true fix. So I'm curious as to what precautions I should take if I buy the G4? Are the newer ones still having the same problem? Should I even bother with the purchase?

Buy, but just bare in mind of the boot loop issue. It's still a great phone even with such as big defect, though if you are looking to root and get custom ROMs get the EUR H815 variants, SEA and other various variants are currently rootable but bootloader locked.
Source: I got a SEA H815 variant and just rooted it, and currently searching for bootloader solutions...
chances are very slim of bootloop but still may happen. i would say go ahead. but if no nougat for us f*** LG.
Appreciate the responses. Especially the tip about buying the European version of the 815. Curious though. I noticed there are custom ROMs for the 811 on the development page? That means its bootloader is unlockable right?

yes h811 ican be unlocked.. if you in the USA then get the h811. if you in wurope then h815 that can be unlocked not all can.. search google it list of LG G4 that can be unlocked.
I wouldn't recommend it unless if you're into the custom rom scene and getting a unlocked BL phone of course. If it's a locked BL, you'll basically be buying a phone with no more support with a pretty high failure rate. Problem with buying them online is that you don't know if it'll be a newer batch or older one.
I should've clarified better. Yes I plan on using installing a custom ROM once the OS becomes dated. I use Straight Talk and they don't do updates anyway. So I'm guessing it was the older batch of phones they were the main culprit of the bootloop? The one I had my eye from eBay claims the phone is the newest version. Pretty much decided this was the phone for me till I saw the bootloop issue. Kinda leaning towards the HTC M9 now.

Check the first 3 digits of the serial. If it starts with 603 or higher you will have a good one . I wouldn't recommend a device where you find something like replaced mainboard or so. It should be really new and untouched.

Really appreciate the info. Has helped tremendously. One last Q please, does the 603 or higher serial number apply to both the 815 and the 811?
Keep in mind that battery isnt strong if You are average user. I dont play with those kernel tweaks after rooting, so I got no more than 3 hours of screen on time. Usually 2,5 SOT. Also - no nougat as I saw in other posts. So if You want to get ir You will have to root and flash other ROM's to get it....

Yes to both. The higher the better. If you have 608 it means it was manufactured in August 2016. 701 means January 2017.
I have 2 devices with 603 serial on heavy usage.
Ensure you get an unlockable variant because there are h815 variants which cant be unlocked and this is really very recommended for this phone..

Nougat will come . agreed officially by LG !
Q3 this year..
I have 3 to 4 hours SOT but its okay. Main problem is the display drains the most.

My girlfriend's G4 died like 4 months ago after a year of use (bootloop) and mine died today a couple of hours ago, it just wont start at all completely dead, after a year and a hafl of use, so, NO you shouldn't. The G2 was a beast and the reason I bought the G4. G4 worst piece of crap I ever had, battery problems a ton, display ghosting after a year of use (both mine and my girlfriend's and we didn't buy it from the same seller nor at the same time). Buying a Galaxy S7 edge next week.
LG G4 is a ticking time bomb. Even if it's "fixed from LG. Don't regret the purchase.

There's no specific model that won't get bootloop. Except for maybe getting a different device like an LG G5 which is not much more cost depending on condition than a G4 in the US anyway.

No if it bootloops but when. You are better off with something else. If u dont get the rite model itll bootloop and no root or twrp. So a double down whammy. Plus there is very little support left for the g4. But there are still wonderful devs and memebers working very hard to keep her alive
My g4 died a week ago and she was 2 which is extremly old in g4 years lol.
6 to 12 months is average life span
I thought the refurbished g4s didn't have that problem anymore

lg is doing a decent job of warranty on them but i feel they should quit and start replacing them with similar speced devices as they seem to have not fixxed the issue
now some people will contridict me and say the newer ones dont bootloop its up to you againg some refurbs from lg claimed to bootloop too
again up to you if ure willing to take a chance on a decent device
I got mine something like year ago straight from LG Poland, as my G Flex 2 had many issuses so they replaced it with G4. Never had any problems with it, even through heavy usage and software moding. Altough LG Poland service seems very good and i don't care as long as i have a warranty (which is two years from the date of warranty exchange). Only thing i would change is the Snapdragon 808(bigger battery would be also nice), but otherwise this phone is superb and it's still seems better than newer LG phones, especially G5. Still best LG design to date and it's shame that this curved design with buttons on the back havn't survived.
Also, i'm writing this down with my G4

No more developing?

It kind of looks like everyone got rid of there G4? Or was it just not a very popular phone? I've been browsing through the topics a bit and there just doesn't seem to have been as much custom roms or kernels as with other phones in general..
Which is only convincing me more to get the new OnePlus..

It's not that we are getting rid of the G4 nor it is not popular, it is in fact a very good phone other than its terrible battery life. It's LG who makes us get rid of them. I had no intention to get an OnePlus 3T at all if it wasn't the infamous bootloop issue kicking in. Hope this answers your question.

They have horrible hardware. Its not if it will bootloop but when. My g4 of 2 years died the other day. Lol i got me a g5. No root no unlock no roms. Just the way i like it. Yea rite. This phone really wasnt popular cause of the horribly locked bootloaders. And hardware issues combined. Ure best bet would be to ditch it asap and get somthin else
It's a shame that LG seemingly supports few models like single SIM international version like the LG H815! For the long 2 years, dual sim didn't even get bootloader unlock! I should have got the LG H815 instead of the H818P. Now I'm aware that LG G6 single sim international version (LG H870) already having root, custom ROM as well as TWRP support! That'll be my next device.
