Stuck on HtC boot window stating "This build is for development only" - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently got unlocked HTC one m9 from one friend and i thought its international version. When i boot it to bootloader mode it shows "Unlocked" and "S-Off". I installed TWRP recovery and tried to root phone to flash viper rom but now phone goes into bootloop with red text "This build is for development purposes only…”.
I am not sure what is going wrong and how do i get my phone back working. I appreciate if someone guide to get my phone working and root phone for custom rom.
Thank you in advance.

Please help, I am stuck here, tried googling to find some information but it didn't worked.

no nandroid backup?? either that or just flash Att RUU. You can find the RUU on htc.com with all the details and instructions needed. Youll be fully stock and after that just flash twrp and whatever you want

Thanks Roobwz.
I am downloading "RUU_HIMA_UL_M60_SENSE70_ATT_MR_Cingular_US_3.38.502.12.exe" file from HTC portal. Is it unlocked version or compatible with my unlocked phone. I am asking this because i dont want to brick my phone.

My bad man.. I think that you're firmware is the developer edition one. The firmware number must match the one you're flashing. (3.35.617.xx = 3.35.617.xx)
Either that or just change cid and mid and flash whatever you want. Check out the guides in the general section. They usually explain this better than I do

If it is a true developer edition, you might try backing up, running one of the Developer Edition RUU's to get back to 100% stock, and then see if you can get the OTA update. If this was a conversion, make sure the CID/MID are correct (which requires S-off).

lock the bootloader and flash then newest RUU
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/development/ruu-m8-developer-edition-sense-1-54-t2884777
Then simply unlock the bootloader
flash TWRP recovery and SuperSU and a kernel if you need system r/w

Then why did you state in the thread title and OP "stock"?
InsertCoin is a custom ROM and not stock. So you need to return to a stock ROM to install OTA.

1540 is US Dev Edition, and the OP has Euro DE. The RUU likely will not run with incorrect CID, MID. And not sure this is the stock baseline he would want to be on.

Whats a Demo Rom ?
do you have TWRP installed ?
Install this >> http://www.androidrevolution.org/downloader/download.php?file=One_M8_2.22.401.4_odexed.zip
That will get the phone working and Sunshine should get you s-off

Don't know where you obtained that info, but its false. S-off is not needed to install any ROMs.
If the phone is a demo unit, you should have stated that right away in your top post. On a previous HTC device (One X) I believe the demo unit was very difficult, if not impossible to make fully functioning. But no idea if the same is true for the M8 demo unit you have.

Sounds like you just got some random advice, with an unknown link and flashed it. Why on earth would you do such a thing? Stick to XDA, at least here you can go by reputation (number of thanks, Recongnized Contibutor, or Recognized Dev titles).

As I just said in my last response, you do not need S-off to flash any ROMs. If you want help, you need to start actually paying attention to the help that is being given to you. You are also making it very hard to help you, by not giving enough info, and just leaking it out little by little.
You say you can't flash any other ROMs, but that isn't enough information. What happens when you try to flash? Does it fail with an error message? Or flash successful, but doesn't boot? What other ROMs have you tried?
If you want to return to stock to receive OTAs, you will need to find and flash the appropriate nandroid and stock recovery for our CID. Stock backup collection can be found sticky at the top of the General section. There are also various guides on how to return to stock, if you need them just search.

[Q] Back to full stock with s-on

Hi guys,
need your help.
I have Europe M9, with S-ON.
Rooted it, and installed TWRP, installed custom rom.
How to revert it to full stock? I have sold the phone, and now buyer wants it back to way it were.
Thanks.
Thankfully it's pretty easy; just download your carrier specific RUU to restore to full stock. It's a Windows executable that completely wipes & return your phone to factory state.
I have bought it in Telenor Serbia it was on 1.32.401.15. Should I use any Europe RUU, or do I need to find one exact to match my carrier, and-or my firmware version?
sorry if being noob, but cannot understand this HTC's nonsense (s-on/s-off, cid, hboot...) thats the exact reason why I have sold it. to complicated for me...
I just want it up and running, and trust me, I will never EVER buy another HTC again.

Since there are two different versions of your firmware and I don't know which one is the correct one for you I would suggest you to use this firmware and downgrade to 1.32.401.8. This works because the aboot has not been updated until now. The process itself is very easy:
Download the RUU
Rename it to 0PJAIMG.zip (that's a zero at the beginning not an O)
Copy the file on an external SD card that is formatted to fat32 and not bigger than 32 gb
Boot into download mode
Follow the instructions that are shown on your M9's screen
Congratulation you are now back on stock rom and firmware
You have to use either this way or the fastboot flashing method since there are no RUU executables for the european version.
Btw: No one here forced you to buy the M9. Since it's simply a matter of taste it's up to you which device you choose. I personally prefer HTC's user friendliness in regard to bootloader unlock and rooting (compare it for example with Samsung's Knox system). But this is not the right place for that debate.
Edit: Since my phone is S-OFF I'm not completely sure but you might have to relock your bootloader or step 5 might no work properly.
I have the same problem, i wanna know how to restore it to full stock, i need it just in case something happens to phone and i need to use my waranty. I'm also on telenor serbia. Any detailed instructions would be much appreciated. And one more thing, will i be able to recevie OTA updates even though its rooted ?

Root by itself doesn't prevent OTAs, but changes to the recovery do. As far as I know, acquiring root (for this device) always involves flashing a custom recovery. So OTA aren't possible until the stock recovery is restored.
Do I need to have sd card, or can I flash it from pc using adb?
I have already tried this method, and fastboot gave me an error 22? Maybe I got wrong firmware. Will try again, thanks.

There is a RUU list in the General forum. Not all configurations have RUUs, unfortunately, as it has always been with HTC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/htc-one-m9-dump-t3060545
By far the easiest way for the inexperienced is to use the windows exe version linked to a few posts ago .
If you're on 1.32.401.15 then simply flash 1.32.401.17 using the exe version. Simply run windows program and follow on screen prompts .
Main limitation if you're S on is it will only allow upgrade that is to go to higher number as described .
I think there is also a 1.32.401.8 exe but that's an earlier version so if you tried to use that and you were on higher version such as 1.32.401.15 then it wouldn't allow unless you had obtained S off.

One more thing, i received lates OTA update, but it wont instal because recovery isnt stock. I found stock signed, when i flash it will the phone factory reset or not ?

Developers Edition, unable to update.

Hey all, im not very software proficient, and I need some help in updating my HTC One M9 to Marshmallow.
I recently purchased it from my friend, and apparently, its an International version that is also the developers edition.
It came with TWRP already installed, but I flashed the stock recovery so that I could install the update from HTC itself, But everytime it finishes downloading the update, it gives me an error about it not downloading the correct file. I dont get it, cause its pretty much downloading it by itself, how can it not download the right version.
Is there anyway for me to check and find out exactly what version of the phone this is. Can someone please send me a reliable download link for the official Marshmallow update (already tried using the file on the official HTC website, but apparently had a file size flash limit, this was when using TWRP, not the official recovery) and detailed steps on how to flash it. I have tried multiple ways and have always stumbled upon several errors. Really hoping that nothing is wrong with my phone.
Thank you in advance.
Are you sure it's a developer edition, how do you know this?.

I dont know if it is or not, because when I got the phone, on startup it would give me text in red saying "developers edition, this phone is not for resale of distribution outside blah blah" I dont remember the exact text. But after I flashed the official recovery file, it doesnt give me that anymore.
So lets say its not a developers edition, how do I go about updating it?

That text is an indication that the bootloader got unlocked and that someone flashed something so that the phone is modified and not stock, anymore. It has nothing to do with the developer edition of the M9. The developer edition is just a US version of the M9 which gets delivered with a factory unlocked bootloader. Therefore chances are high that you flashed the wrong (in other words an incompatible) stock recovery. You need to find out the current firmware version of the phone and restore everything to stock by using a TWRP backup or a RUU. My signature contains a link to my google sheet. There you'll find instructions how to find and flash the correct RUU or how to find and correctly restore a corresponding TWRP backup. If you don't follow the instructions you won't be able to update your phone. Updates for the M9 and every other HTC phone that is newer are different than the ones for older HTC phones. My sheet might not contain a RUU for your firmware or a corresponding backup since I don't support every existing firmware. However you can find additional files in my thread (which is linked in the sheet, too, or can be found by visiting the general section). If no one contributed the files you need here on xda you'll need to use Llabtoofer's RUU service. Be aware that it's not for free.

It's explained in my sheet. And no, "settings > about" is not (always) the correct place if you want find out your firmware version.

So according to your chart, and my software number which is 1.32.61.15 it would mean that I have the a.bb.61.d - Orange UK (United Kingdom) version? Am I deducing this correctly?

Correct. You're lucky. There is a RUU for your version on androidruu. Just google for "androidruu" and "HTC M9". You can use the instructions in my sheet for flashing it.

Just to be sure, if my friend who was previously using this phone, flashed another rom on it with the incorrect version, wouldnt the software number also change? Is there no other way to confirm the version of the phone?
Also, do I use the official TWRP download link in your sheet, is it the correct version for my phone?

The number in settings > about changes with the rom you're flashing. The one located in the download mode only changes if you update the phone with an official OTA or if you set your phone S-OFF via sunshine (which costs 25 bucks) and flash a RUU (or one of sneakyghost's firmware packs) with a different sku afterwards. However if the phone is S-OFF it wouldn't matter which RUU he flashed since with S-OFF almost every RUU can be used with your phone. Only CDMA versions (e.g. Verizon ones) stay incompatible.
Tl;dr: Just flash the 1.32.61.15 one. It's either way compatible with the phone.

Htc M9 no os

To sum up i wanted to wipe the date and i "accidentaly"(how can be accidentantaly?well i am an idiot) delete the os of my htc m9. I was stucked in the starting logo for ages.I have acess to download and recovery mode.I tried to flash a custom rom i found in the forums using the twrp all went good it flashed the rom. When it reached the part where it says android application updating 0-189 it did everything. After that it kept showing me the htc logo i could restart shutdown lock and power up and down the volume but nothing else and the logo kept in front.Any idea?can it be fixxed?s-on.Thanks for your time
You need to flash a stock firmware. The same firmware as what was on it before it borked.

Have you read through the readme thread? One of your previous posts referenced ODIN, which is a Samsung tool. If you've read through the readme thread we will have a common foundation of understanding - and you may discover the solution to your problem there.
It sounds like you need to flash a RUU to your phone. The pre-requisites and guide to doing so are laid out in the readme thread. If you have any questions after reading through it, please post them here and we'll help out as best we can.
i am sorry for asking so much. But in order to flash a RUU it says that you need a rooted device. How i am gonna root my device since i cant connect it to my pc?

Which RUU are you exactly trying to flash (link it please)? What's your current firmware version? Have you checked the MD5 checksum of the downloaded file? What's the size of the SD card you're using? What's its format?

i followed the guide its 32 giga exfat. My firmware is 3.35.401.12 and i am trying to install this one https://pa1.androidfilehost.com/dl/...1_U11440792_97.00.51203G_F_release_signed.zip
That RUU got successfully flashed by S-ON users in the past and it's the correct one for your current firmware. So either the file got corrupted during the download (you didn't mention whether the MD5 checksum matched) or your SD card is broken.

sorry for not responding.today i had my day off and tried once again to fix the phone and Ruu is working. It was the cable i went and bought a new genuine one.Atm the phone is blank from Os when ill turn it on it will automatically take me to the bootloader.I tried to run a ruu.exe but i got a 155 error saying i am using the wrong ruu.I locked the bootloader using oem lock to try if that was the problem but aparrently it wassnt. the phone was from Europe and was working with differents sims in greece and uk so i assume its unlocked.Cant i just install a the stock rom with twrp?
I actually won't answer in this thread, anymore. You already got told to read the ReadMe thread and to follow its instructions. That thread clearly explains how to find the correct RUU and how to flash it. Besides, it tells you not to (re-)lock the bootloader and why you shouldn't do so.
If you ignore all these information and prefer to try out wrong RUUs and to relock your bootloader then there's nothing I can do for you.
