Locking with a software button - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

I encountered an interesting issue, I think it might be a bug. When I use any of the "lock screen" apps (I tried 4 or 5 different ones), the phone cannot be unlocked via fingerprint. If I put my finger on after locking using a software button, it goes straight to PIN screen and does not recognise the fingerprint.
Is anyone else experiencing this? I always liked using a button to turn screen off instead of using the power button but does not seem possible with this phone.

It's not a bug. It's Android 6.0 Marshmallow security feature. It presence on all android devices with fingerprint sensor and Android 6.0
Well.. You can bypass it. but you have to root your device and install xposed. Here is the link! :highfive:

That's interesting, I had an honor 7 with marshmallow on it prior to this and it worked fine with a fingerprint scanner and a software lock.
Not saying you are not right by any means just trying to understand why it worked on the honor and doesn't work on oneplus.

Must have been an implementation on Huawei side. In any case, locking the screen using a double tap on the home button works quite well for me and replaces a software lock 100%.

Phone unlocks easily inside pocket

Does anyone else experience this problem? What fixes are available?
The power button for Xperia z1 custom seems to be activated a lot while in my pocket and the default unlock screen (on latest FW) is just a swipe in any direction. This causes a lot of unwanted unlocks.
I'm now using pattern security to unlock, but I would prefer not to, because I miss the access to the notification center.

i`m on 4.4.2 evo5 .. i don`t have this problem at all .. i don`t think it`s a software problem.. but if u use a case or something like that the problem it`s solved )
yep, have the same problem.
my pocket took a photo and sent it via sms to somebody yesterday
Use this app, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
I've got the pro now, it does the job plus more features. If you're concerned about the battery, just turn on the pocket sensor having rest of them disabled.

[Q] Fingerprint issues

Is anyone else experiencing issues with the fingerprint scanner on the Verizon variant?? It works fine most of the time but occasionally, I'd say 1/3 of the time, it says "Pin required to us Fingerprint". Any ideas on what this is?
Sent from my HTC 10
Are you using something like Nova's gestures to lock the phone? I discovered that locking by any means other than the power button will cause a pin/pattern to be required the next time it's unlocked.
I am. So you think anything with admin rights to the lock screen is the issue?

Basically. Just having apps in the Device Admin list shouldn't cause it, but it one of them performs an action like locking the screen, it triggers a PIN unlock.
Awesome thanks so much for the info[emoji106]

Believe after the first time when the phone is rebooted, you have to put in the pin. Not sure if randomly after that a pin is required. If not mistaken, there will be a message on the screen if you read it really close.
Any solution to this yet?
i had an issue like this with my HTC10(unlocked on VZW) i just added another(i.e. the right thumb again) finger at the angle i normally tried to unlock it with and it now works flawlessly.
The issue was using Nova launcher gestures to lock the device.

So are you looking screen with power button now? I've raised the issue in the Nova thread, hopefully this can be resolved.

Yeah I just use power button now. It's not a big issue but just a little inconvenience

From what I understand, I don't think this is something Nova can fix. I believe it's a security measure within Android that disables the fingerprint unlock when locked by anything other than the power button.
Does your fingerprint sensor had issue like litle "klik" when you press it down? You need to put your ear to hear, but i need to know is this normal or my sensor is broken?

Is the Fingerprint Scanner perminantly ON?

Hi Guys,
I'm thinking about buying this phone for a friend and need to understand how the fingerprint scanner works.
On my One Plus 3, the scanner is ON all the time which makes it awesome, (but probably eats battery.) :victory:
On my Galaxy Tab S2, you have to press the scanner to turn it on first, which makes the whole process much worse.
Is the scanner on the P2 always ON, (like the One Plus 3,) or does it require a press to wake it up? (like on Samsung devices.)
Thanks in advance. :highfive:
The scanner is always on.. you don't need to wake the phone to use it.. the battery drain is minimal

Thanks Uibon. :highfive:
Is it a physical button? i.e. presses in, or is it just purely capacitive?
My Samsung also has an issue where if you lock the screen using an app, (Power Toggles,) you can't unlock the phone with your fingerprint. Any idea if the P2 suffers the same issue?
It's both. The fingerprint sensor is capacitive and works by just placing one's finger on it. There are also many gestures that work on the capacitive sensor like tap to go back long press to view recent apps. The button is also physical pressing it brings you to home screen and long press brings up Google assistant

Ok Uibon,
So to unlock the phone, do you just place your finger on the sensor (without pressing it down,) or do you have to press it down as well? I ask this as on my Tab S2, having to press down also results in many incorrect reads.
Its a pity Lenovo didn't put a lock screen gesture in the fingerprint scanner like One Plus. It by far the best system I've ever used.
It works like the fingerprint on the OnePlus.. just place the finger to make it work no pressing the button necessary.

Excellent Uibon, :victory:
Just need to sort out now the issue of using an app to lock the screen and understand if this takes away the ability to unlock next time with the fingerprint.

Just tried screen lock widget and it requires pin to unlock after using it. Finger does not work.
I am using nova prime and double tap to sleep and i can wake from finger print sensor iff you use timeout lockscreen method which means after you double tap the screen to lock the it screen goes black instantlly but the actual full screen lock engages after 30sec allowing the phone to screen to be locked through its own system hence the fingerprint wake works normal. I am not aware of other launchers that have this but nova prime has it.

That's an Android security limitation and all phones do that I believe. I think some apps can "trick" the phone by turning the screen off and let the timeout do the locking but I'm not sure.
If you have root access then they'll work. Else they won't. It's a security feature and uses device admin rights to lock the phone. Which means the device admin should unlock it by the most secure way. That's pin password or pattern.
It's not device specific and hence it's nothing to blame Lenovo

You are correct dannejanne. Some OEM's have realised how stupid it is and have sorted it out.
On the One Plus 3, you can securely unlock the phone and relock all with one finger while your phone is on your desk. You can do this better and faster than any other phone. As it's something you do so many times a day, it's time for the other OEM's to blatantly copy this.

Alternative to "tap to wake": "wave to wake"

I've seen lots of people complaining that Mi A1 does not have "tap to wake" feature. I personally don't miss it since i'm using the fingerprint reader to wake and unlock in one go.
However, I've seen and tested that small free and open source app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jarsilio.android.waveup
With this, you can wake phone by "waving" your hand above the proximity sensor.
I've put it on my A1 for 1,5 day now, and have seen no battery drain Developer explains:
Unfortunately, some smartphones let the CPU on while listening to the proximity sensor. This is called a wake lock and causes considerable battery drain. This isn't my fault and I cannot do anything to change this. Other phones will "go to sleep" when the screen is turned off while still listening to the proximity sensor. In this case, the battery drain is practically zero.

But it seems on A1 we are good to go.
I know it's not exact same feature than "tap to wake", but you might still want to give it a try if you're looking for a way to wake phone without using hardware button. As well it can wake the phone when taken out of pocket!

First of all, thank you for the recommendation. This app is working flawlessly for now but I'm just curious about a feature. I have enabled the feature that allows to cover the proximity sensor to lock the screen. It needed device admin permission for that. Now, when I wave to wake it up, it takes me to the enter pin screen instead of fully unlocking so I have to enter the pin to unlock the device because it says that the device is locked by admin. Is there a workaround to bypass this one extra step?

This looks like the Nova's "double tap to lock" feature. If you're not rooted you need to grant admin permission to lock the screen, which requires PIN everytime you log back in.
Exactly, if you're not root, the "lock" feature is no good if you use fingerprint, I have disabled it, anyway phone goes to sleep on its own.
You should also check out KinScreen (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teqtic.kinscreen), it does wave to wake and also has many options to control when the screen stays on. For example, you can set it to stay on when your phone is at more than a 45° angle (like most times you're on your phone, reading something).

You can basically use double tap to wake with this, just enable it and tap your proximity sensor to wake.

SAMSUNG A50 Automatically Unlocks Problem.

From few days. My A50 is getting automatically unlocks in my pocket. Is anyone is facing the same issue ??
Please specify more details. What do you mean by automatically unlocks? You get an alert or something? Does it unlock and launch apps on it's own when you place it in your pocket? Which biometric methods are turned on and is Google smart lock on?
Sometimes a random app opens when i check my phone. Currently i am using fingerprint unlock method for my device.
To prevent that, turn on Accidental Touch option and cure the phone
Sent from my SM-A505FN using Tapatalk
Accidental touch option is already on.
Check some apps installed. Maybe some of them making trouble.
On my phone, all's good. Hmmm.
My A50 is getting automatically unlocks in my pocket. I am also facing the same issue. I am using biometrics and faceunlock . Accidental touch is also turned on. Whats the use of secuirty if it can be unlocked my pocket can unlock this phone without biometrics and face. I face so many times in a day. I read samsung s10 also facing this same issue.

Smart lock or anything on?
Listen, turn off all biometric methods and only keep pin/pattern and see?

I am facing the same issue. My phone become hot, and there is a message that biometric unlock fail for 5 times and I have to insert the pin. Meanwhile, the battery drained at least 7-8%
heat is normal while playing game, may b u shud try hard reset. Hope it will solve problem. I am using face unlock coz biometric unlocks takes time to unlock. Biometric i use rarely sometimes may b our screen has sometimes white layer of dust or oily . So that can be the reason for fngerprint problem.
Maybe u are using smart lock
Hi, Please check if you are using trusted location or device. If that option turned on turn off trusted location or device. I can not surely tell you where the option is because I will receive my device tomorrow. but there must be a option.
Just visit a service centre. Its already in warranty period. So dont worry.

Hi all ,
My samsung A50 also have the same problem , automatically unlocking while in pocket on driving, tried different settings as per various suggestions, such as accidental touch, home screen app changes, disabling of trusted devices,on body detection..etc..etc....
But no use, the issue existing .
But after a recent setting change, now its ok , some days over, till no problem. Try it , May be its workout .
And reply me the result ,...
Firstly make sure , all the normal settings are ok , accidental touch protection enabled /also disable the on body detection , trusted devices/ driving, ....the same is in the link of Smart Lock .
Then
Advanced Features - Motions & Gestures - disable the lift to wake & double tap to wake.
Other items will enable no problem , such as smart stay, alert, easy mute .
Try it and reply
Go to settings ---》 smart lock --》voice match --》while driving (turn off)
Same issue on my A70.
The "Accidental touch protection" feature doesn't seem to do anything. Maybe because it doesn't have a sensor, just the camera? Either way, the software is bugged.
I ended up turning off "Double tap to wake", as I don't really need that.
I also have the same problem that the phone unlocks in my pocket.
So iam trying now the options above to turn off some options.
I'll let know if it will work or not.
Yes my divice also unlocking automatically while in pocket
