Random reboots - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Hiya folks,
Just wondering if anybody has been experiencing random reboots on the OP3. Have been experiencing em on 3.2.1 and 3.2.2 about twice a day since I got the phone four days ago. Tried a cache wipe/hard reset but to no avail. Haven't been able to reproduce the reboots. Just happen at completely random times, while writing an email, making a call, or connecting to the car Bluetooth. Phone is perfectly responsive and stable otherwise!
Have asked Amazon for a replacement, but I'm wondering if this is something that's been noticed by anybody else. No mods done, completely stock. Running dual sims (Vodafone and Jio VoLTE).
Attaching a screenshot of how the battery page shows the reboots.

Yeah, they happen for me periodically. Not nearly as often as yours though. Mine is maybe once or twice a week max. But yes, slightly annoying.
Phone is completely stock, locked, unrooted. Running 3.2.2.

Haven't had a single random reboot yet, had the phone for about a month now. Started with 3.1.3, then 3.2.1, now 3.2.2, rooted, running xposed (not a lot of modules).
What are you doing when the reboots happen (an app issue)?

It's been all over the place, but often when the screen was actually off! The way I would know would be I'd pick up the phone and see that it asks for the PIN post reboot. If it helps, I've enabled encryption. I also have a work (exchange) email account set up as a device admin
I know there's ways of investigating this with logcats and last_kmsg, but I've had the phone 4 days and I cant imagine why it's spontaneously rebooting while doing literally nothing. Seeing as hardly anybody has had similar reboots (on XDA/OnePlus forums), could this be a hardware issue at all? I could possibly try reflashing the entire phone, but that would essentially be the same as a wiping data/cache, right?

Here's an idea - my LTE data/VoLTE is extremely spotty (on Reliance Jio which is in a beta test stage) - disconnects and connects VERY frequently, could that be triggering reboots at the baseband level? Now throwing ideas at the wall!

Mine had random reboot issues recently on a trip. It only seemed to happen when I was using Google navigation combined with listening to music on my bluetooth headphones. I haven't tried that combination since the trip and haven't had any reboots since then.

same issue
the reboots are random, and i could only know that the phone has rebooted itself if it ask for a pin upon scanning finger, went to service center and has OS flashed, but the problem still persist, for me some time when the phone hangs, some kind of pixels form on the screen, attaching a sample photo for reference, anybody experiencing this issue or am i the only one, and today the phone has completely stopped working, it is not switching on.

Wow that is substantially worrying, and almost certainly not just a software issue I reckon. Try getting a replacement maybe? - or atleast ask the service folks for a mainboard replacement. Anybody else with reboot issues?
Doesn't really seem to be an OS bug, unless it happens in very niche use cases which I don't have anyway! Getting the replacement on Tuesday, fingers crossed for that one!

My friend and I both got a one plus 3. He does not have this problem but I have.
The reboot is random but usually happens during charging. Sometimes it even turns off.
I have tried to ask for a replacement but they rejected me. Still communicating with the support staffs

Went to service center in Gurgaon, getting a replacement for motherboard, as oneplus policy doesn't give replacement handset, have to SETTLE for this, i dont know how many days this whole process is going to take, will update you guys about it when i get the phone back.

I have the same issue, random reboots usually when screen is off.
3.2.1, root + xposed... for me it started with 3.2.0 update

I experienced a similar scenario twice, only seems to happen on long trips, 3+ hours. I was using Waze with Plex streaming audio over car Bluetooth. I have not had this on shorter trips, 1-2 hours. I'm typically plugged into the dash car charger. Otherwise, haven't had issues. Never rooted 3.2.2.

Situation Update
Got the replacement OP3 on August 9. Have now seen 2 random reboots since. Once while paired to the car Bluetooth, once after finishing a call.
I have till August 19 to decide whether to keep this device or ask for replacement number two! Overall, the reboot situation is a lot better on this device, but I can't help wonder - why any at all?
Seems at this point to either be a bug with the Bluetooth implementation AND/OR with the dual SIM functionality where repeated switching between SIMs for every call. (I use one SIM for calls and texts, another for data)
Can anyone confirm the situation on a custom ROM as opposed to stock? I'm running stock 3.2.2

Aaaaand now we have an ota claiming to fix 'auto-reboot issues' - 3.2.4
The reboots were so sparsely documented compared to the other stuff that I ended up getting a replacement for a s/w issue!
Anyway - you folks reboot free now? Post results with 3.2.4 please

I had three back to back random reboots while using Google Maps and Amazon Kindle in the background. Weird.
I've yet to have a random reboot on 3.2.4

I'm on 3.2.4 with bl unlocked, rooted, Xposed, twrp

Had several reboots while driving and navigating on google maps one after the other. Maybe it is to do with the GPS sensor but its annoying coz you need it most when u r navigating turn by turn

Agree. It happens only when I drive with gmaps running on background. When the screen times out, the phone, instead of shutting down the display, goes to hard reboot.
I've never had this issue until I moved to the latest update. Weird. Annoying.

I had my first reboot a few hours ago (with 3.2.4). I was connected to Bluetooth in my Car. Noticed it, as my car told me that mein Phone is now connected. No gmaps or something with GPS runinng.
Looks like Bluetooth is the Problem.

Random Reboots

Does anyone else suffer from random reboots with there device? it does it twice a day or more for me???
Is there anything i can do to stop this issue from happening again?
I.e wipe user data???
I've had it once or twice. Presumably a rogue app or a bug in the system.
I haven't suffered from a random reboot at all since having the phone on the second day of availability in the UK.
Then again, I haven't rooted mine, unlike others...
Yes I have had a few reboots in the few couple of days. Been ok since though

Not a single crash or random reboot so far. I rebooted last Friday after charging my battery and it's been running since without problems. My best guess is that culprit is one of your applications that you've installed, especially any application that tries to do something with Android and the device itself.

I had these reboots on a G2X and it drove me bonkers so I am always worried about phones doing it and I watch uptime like a hawk. Nexus has been rock solid since I turned it on the first time. No reboots. Sometimes it's apps and sometimes your use case just exposes a bug in the OS. Try doing a wipe and installing a few apps at a time so you can figure out what's causing it n
I had a couple within the first few days... nothing for a while...
This is just speculation, but I remembered seeing a thread somewhere in another form, in which a user with another device with the same random reboot problem was advised to check his sim card. A bad sim card may "vanish" for a while, causing the device to reboot. Again, just speculation, or if you wish, a hypothesis you can check.
I have something similar, the first time was when I was charging my phone, I woke up in the morning and I found my phone off and hot as hell. Battery pull and everything went perfect. then it happened to me 5 times, the phone freezes and turns itself off, then I have to do a battery pull! the last time was today I was listening to some music, then the music went weird, then the phone froze and turned itself off.
I called Three for a new phone as I have it for under 14days
It looks like there is an issue that google hopefully acknowledges like they did with nexus s.
I was listening to music on my way down the sidewalk thus morning and the mp3 started doing a loop of about 1 sec of the track over and over. Finally heard a pop and it went silent. Had to do a battery pull when I got on the subway.
Then on the subway about 10-20 seconds into a track after starting some music back up the track restarted. So I stopped playback thinking it may happen again.
I'll try to do what I can over the coming days to recreate this.

I would think that would cause more problems than that. I was listening to some tunes for a bit last night with no issue. And the issue this morning happened with two different tracks.
I had added a battery gauge widget to my home screen last night, I removed it just now. I'll try to recreate the problem from here without adding more apps or widgets. If I can successfully recreate it I'll try to hook up adb and get some logs.

I'm getting another problem now. I've taken off GO SMS so I dont think its that. But when I get a notification (i.e SMS, email), I go to wake up my phone and the unlock screen appears. However it wont recognise any touches on the screen, then sometimes it will come back to life and other times it will reboot itself.
Never had a random reboot, I have go SMS installed.

Just had a random reboot with none of the aforementioned apps installed.
I was having random reboots when the phone was just sitting there with the screen off.
I had SetCPU under clocking when the screen was off, I removed SetCPU and my random reboots went away.

Phone Restarts With Google Maps?

Anyone else have the issue of their phone restarting when using Google Maps? The phone also happens to be plugged into Dash Car Charger as well.
Yes it has happened to me a few times.... Knock on wood I haven't had any issues recently. I used tasker to setup a profile so when I use my nav apps (maps, waze, etc) it turns off Bluetooth and sets the location mode to gps/device only vs. high accuracy. Not sure if there's any correlation, but I've gone about 1 week with no issues. I use waze to and from work daily.

Happened to me a few days after upgrading to OOS 3.2.2. On a secondary highway in mountains where signal was spotty. Have a feeling it was related to loss of LTE/4G signal while in maps.

I can also say this happened to me. Everytime it did happen I just so happened to "switch" over to edge network. After using data on the other sim, which has better coverage, it didn't happen.
Tested using one carrier sim on way up, and other carrier sim on way down. I was also using Bluetooth streaming Pandora the entire time each way. It never happened before oos 3.2.2, only Pandora would cut out when hitting the edge network.

I've had this happen as well, but only when my phone has been plugged into a charger in my car.. it's possible that it has been shutting down thinking that something was going wrong with charging?
Rebooted when using Google Maps.
OnePlus 3 (3.2.2 OS)
Rebooted 3 times in a row
Was not charging at the time.
Rebooted when using Google Maps and Radardroid.
5-6 Reboots in 2 hours . No troubles in 6-7 hours before.
Reboots with and without original car charger.

2. use GPS

Yeah...especially since even if you have a fingerprint lock, you still have to enter your password after a reboot. OOS 3.2.4 fixed some of these issues, at least according to the change log. But I mostly use custom ROMs (Resurrection Remix at the moment), so I haven't tested OOS 3.2.4 yet.
Edit: well, never mind about 3.2.4 fixing the issue:

You know, there is actually another thread about this, if you dig around the Q&A section. Now, several people said they thought random rebooting is a hardware issue. The thing is, I get random reboots too, but it only happens while driving, BT connected, Pandora playing, and navigation going. Outside that one particular scenario, I have never had a random reboot. I don't call myself an expert, but that doesn't sound like a hardware failure to me if it only happens under one (very particular) set of circumstances.

agree. i tried to make this problem reoccured at home (meaning bt on; played music over the bt; maps on) -- no restarts.
smthng telling me it's related to gps. BUT i haven't had this problem before 3.2.4 update.
i only hope the OP team will take a deep look into this.
me too, while using Android Auto (so the phone is plugged in and charging, and connected by bluetooth, if it matters)
once it starts it will repeatedly reboot every few minutes.
If I close maps and clear cache it seems to help.
So what do we do?
I have the same restarting problem, using Waze as satnav and gps,on non Dash charger in car, and with 3.2.4 update. What can we do to get Oneplus to take this problem seriously?
I have exactly the same set up and exactly the same problem: Waze, OxygenOS 3.2.4, with or with out charger in the car.
This problem only started yesterday. On my 1 hour commute last night the phone restarted 5 time. On the 1 hour commute this morning it rebooted 5 times in 30 mins before I gave up and drove without it.
Anyone found a fix for this?
Maps running without issues
Maps ver9.36.1

Verizon S8+ Bugs and Issues

Hi everyone,
I have 2 Galaxy S8+ from Verizon and here are my issues:
Past issues:
One of them did not come with the Galaxy Apps store (Not the plays store), and that phone also experienced the DQA issue
Current issues:
If I turn on Fingerprint gestures, the fingerprint sensor will stop working, this was an issue I had from the day I got the phone and has continued even through the updates. Here's a thread I made about it a while ago : https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/help/fingerprint-sensor-t3595614
My internal speaker has detached, or at least I think that is the issue, as sometimes when I am in a phone call and shake the phone just a little bit, it will either start making a weird buzz sound or completely cut off the sound. Shaking it again will fix it, that's why I think it's a physical issue. I haven't dropped my phone and just in case I ever do, I have a case and a screen protector on it, and neither of them (phone, case, screen protector) have any damage marks on them.
The Biggest Issue: Currently this is the most annoying bug I am experiencing is that whenever I go to lock screen and security in the setting app, it crashes the settings app. I also can't use the search function in the settings app, as it crashes the app withing a few seconds. The lock screen and security is the only menu in which I experience this, I am 99% sure this is due to me turning on Secure startup. I had it turned on a few days after I got the phone and it worked great, I had to turn it off once, about a month ago in order to get a quicker boot. After that I was experiencing issues turning it back on (meaning I turned it on, rebooted the phone and it would not work) , after some persistence, I was able to get it to work and it has worked and still works.
One thing to mention is that I had done the most recent system update, I am not sure this issue was caused by at, since the inability so search in the setting menu has happened prior to the latest update.
I have tried everything other than a full factory reset (wiping all cache, wiping apps cache, reset setting, reset network settings), which I refuse to do, It is absolutely unacceptable for me to pay this much for this phone and have so many issues with it, I have factory resetted my phone (Samsung's recommendation) in order to fix the first issue listed above, multiple times and it did not work.
At this point I really don't know what to do, Samsung support has been useless in this, I don't wish to replace my phone right now as I need it to much to even give up for one day, If anyone has any advice/fix other than factory resetting, I'll happily try it.
Thank you,
GGgamer16
Sounds like a factory reset is needed. I just tried all you mentioned with zero problems on the newest update w/ navbar options and experienced none of that. Speaker problem is most likely hardware related.

Yeah I have tried changing channels. It didn't matter. I'm on 2.4 GHz.
I found a possible fix from another forum. I changed my wifi encryption from wpa2 AES/tkip to wpa2 tkip only last night and was rock solid after that point. I didn't have any more wifi issues... Just wanted to mention this change for other people. I usually got 5+disconnects every night. I'm gonna try just the AES option tonight and see how it acts.

Question Random reboots

Well, I had the 6 Pro for about 36 hours. It kept rebooting randomly, even after a factory reset, so it's going back for an exchange.
Has anyone else had this issue?

No definately not, here the worst I have experienced is some app crashes, they probably aint android 12 ready, and some pretty big lag moments
I don't have any issues. Do you have the November update yet?
For some strange reason, I noticed exactly this aswell (one time, this morning). I was working out and my phone laid on the table, when I saw it lit up because it restarted for no reason.
I guess it's a software bug.
And no, there was no automatic system update - I checked, I'm still running the old version.

I tried to find one, but as of now I have been unsuccessful.
No, nothing at all either. Mine also installed silently at some point. I recall a notification asked for a reboot yesterday morning.
No, not had one random reboot since I got it on Tuesday.
Nothing here either. Good luck!

I had the November update and all apps had been updated as well. It would freeze and then reboot.
I did a factory reset and did not restore any of my apps, just ran it with the factory apps, and it still did it. Since no one else is having the issue, I'm feeling confident it was a bad unit. I had the 128 gb version.
It's back to the pixel 5 for another week or so. I had to exchange that after I got it too because of a bad proximity sensor. Either I just have really bad luck or Google needs to tweak their quality control department.
Weird unexplainable OS crashes like that are usually due to faulty hardware, potentially RAM
If you're having issues, do yourself a favor and keep an itemized list (on your device, word doc on pc, somewhere) and notate the following for each occurrence:
-date / time
-the fault (self reboot, major lag, over heated, fast battery discharge, etc.)
-what you had to do to clear it (rebooted, closed app, powered off/on, etc.)
When talking with Google about a replacement, having THIS information ready to read off will make it extremely hard from them to give you any grief about you needing a warranty replacement.
An itemized list of faults is MUCH better evidence that you need a replacement than "well, it rebooted a few times last month"

I am inclined to agree here, but my years of working with Windows and Android incl. rooting and using custom roms and kernels want to disagree here. There can be half a gazillion software based reasons for an OS crash, especially with a buggy release like Android 12. Not sure if you participated the beta, but it reminded me of Windows 11. There was a buggy beta build with about 100 bugs, they fixed 20, called it a day and released it. Now we new P6 owners can play beta testers Volume 2 for Google.
One very important thing here is also: Did you guys set up your phone "clean" or did you copy over your old phone by cable or did you use backup?
Any of these things can cause issues.
I, for example, used a cable to transfer all file and apps from my P4 XL to my P6 Pro. It's possible that this is the rootcause for some issues, or maybe it's not. Maybe there are even problems that occur only if you transfer your files from specific phone models to this one, you never know.

Sure, but the OP stated the crashes are happening right after a factory reset, and anecdotal evidence on this thread suggests it's not widespread. It does point to some sort of hardware problem.
I'm having exactly the same issue!
I got the phone today and booted it up for the first time. I selected my language and as soon as I pressed get started it froze, then got stuck in a bootloop. I fixed that by factory resetting from within recovery.
Once I'd gotten through the setup it crashed again when I clicked on the apps button in the optional setup. Because of this I factory reset and set the phone up for a third time.
Third time I got through setup with know issues but the phone freezes/reboots roughly once every two hours. I've been searching all day to see if anyone else has mentioned this issue.
I guess this phone is going in for replacement. Does anyone happen to know how long that takes/ if I'm going to be without a device for long?
They told me 3-5 business days to get a replacement. I expect mine early next week.

I just had 3 random reboots today. Phone just laid on the side of my table on my laptop, doing nothing. It was in the span of probably ~10 minutes each reboot. A strange observation I made - now that I removed my phone from the back of my laptop and laid it directly on the table, no more reboots. Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe it has something to do with the magnets of my Laptop (has quite a lot inside). Not sure what to make of this. It kinda feels like a software buggy-thing, but it's odd that it sometimes just comees and goes. It also only appears to be in absolute idle. I had my phone working yesterday for about 12 hours, incl. using it constantly with navigation, and it never faltered for once. That's why I'd say it's a software thingy, if it had something to do with hardware, it would reboot/fail when under load. But it doesn't.
Had 4 total reboots as of now (had the phone since 27.10).
First reboot was yesterday (28.10) morning when working out, phone laid idle around, booted up.
And now again 3 reboots, morning, laid around, did nothing.
So I've had probably a dozen in two days. I take my phone out of my pocket and attempt a fingerprint unlock only to be told that my PIN is required after a restart. At first I wasn't sure if it was actually rebooting until last night. It prompted me for my pin and upon entering it, the screen locked up for about 20 seconds and it rebooted.
This morning I woke up and was yet again greeted with the "PIN required after restart" and less than 20 minutes later it was the same thing. Only once hav I witnessed the "G" boot animation, but everytime I see my UI loading. So I'm not sure if it's always a full reboot or some times it's just the UI crashing. Everything on my device is stock.

Did you transfer your old phone over with a cable, or backup, or did you start "fresh"?
Maybe we can narrow it down if it's software or hardware problem.

I did a partial transfer. I was coming from an iphone 12 so I transferred photos and contacts only. And I transferred via cable.

Question Every 3-4 days I must reboot

Ok, so like the title says, every 3-4 days I must reboot my phone.
When I play games, the game icon will show up in the lower right corner, I have everything for the game stuff turned off. I can click on the icon and it will ask me to turn on. I back out and it's gone for a few minutes. Mostly until I swipe back, then it will reappear. I can reboot the phone and it will work fine again for a another 3-4 days.
There are other instances that force me to reboot as well, one happened last night. I was scrolling through a local news app and the touch stopped working. I could not scroll up or down, and swiping back did not work. I had to lock the phone and just as the screen went dark, the phone scrolled in the directions I did and it backed out. This only happened when I hit the lock screen.
Is there a fix for this? Has anyone else experienced this?
My phone is rebooted on two to three occasions a month. Others have it more frequently. I wouldn't even say rebooted. Mine just shuts down at random times like other users so I don't know if there's a fix for this. I'm hoping there will be one within an update soon.
Google's absolutely ****ty disregard for their customers and customer service. I'm not Keen on sending a brand new device over to get a refurbished one that isn't guaranteed to solve the issue and most likely guaranteed to come with different issues that my device doesn't have already.
Does it back up to combat this since I have alarms set for work? In case the phone turns off, I don't want to miss work. I use my Google Home Mini speakers, a backup alarm.

Mine does not reboot or shutdown on it own, not once... I have to reboot every so often to keep it functional.
@thepersona My phone doesn't auto reboot either. I'd say do a backup and run https://flash.android.com/welcome to fully Factory Reset the phone and see if that helps (Mine upgraded just fine, but my parents both failed the Dec update and had random issues requiring the use of the Android Flash Tool).
Like the OP I do have to reboot my phone about every 3-4 days, but I don't attribute that just to Google Android, coders have become lax on how tight they keep their code, and I say that because in Windows 10 and Windows 11 you have to reboot every few days as well or see an increase in weird issues.

Just to clarify this, most carriers prevented the December update from releasing as Google has asked them to prevent it from going through, primarily due to an issue with calls dropping.
I always manually update my phone, however, I noticed the call dropping bug one day for about an hour straight.
But aside from this meaningless info, I agree with what you said: Attempt a factory reset and see what happens. I turn my phone off every night and charge it, so I don't notice any issues similar to what OP has mentioned.

Yeah mine did that it would randomly restart once a week no matter what I was doing but I did a factory reset and it hasn't happened since!

In your case, was it just a restart? Because mine literally powers off It doesn't reboot again. It shuts down in the middle of the night and I wouldn't know until I wake up when using my phone to figure out it won't turn on. I almost missed work on several occasions because of this lol

Yeah I was lucky and it was only once a week which was tolerable!
Something is definitely not right, hopefully is not a dodgy app but that would be preferable than something unfixable.
Ok guys you are missing my point and question. I DO NOT have the random reboots most have, but I have other issues that no one seem to have. Example, I listen to Spotify over night, I fall asleep to music, but 2 days ago it would randomly pause. At first I thought it was do not disturb that I just turned on, on my watch. It was not. Then I thought I may have been hitting my watch, I took it off and it still paused. I rebooted my phone and it's been fine since, no random pauses. Another example is, I play a game but I have the game dashboard turned off, but there times where the icon will pop up in the lower right. When I go into the settings for it, it shows it's off. When I go back to the game the icon is gone for a few minutes then it reappears. The only way for me to get it to stop showing for a few days is to reboot my phone.
I know you shouldn't have to reboot your phone every few days, and by few I mean sometimes it's 3-4 times a week. That tells me something is wrong.
Are you on the November or December update?
If November, I would try the December one.
Rooted or not rooted?
Either way, I would try a factory refresh and don't restore your apps from backup. Manually install only your most critical apps and see if you have the problem. Even better would be not install any additional apps at all and see if the problem happens. If it doesn't happen, install another small group of your most important apps and test again for long enough. Etc.
If you try thre update and/or factory reset, you could try restoring your cloud backup as normal and see if you have any problems still, but if you do, be prepared to factory reset and try like I mentioned in the above paragraph.
Until you can narrow down if the phone has this problem on the December update before you even change settings and add your favorite apps, then you won't know if it's the phone itself (possibly hardware problem), an app you have installed, a problem particular to a combination of factors including if you're on the November update, or what.
Good luck! Please let us know what happens.
I can tell you that until I updated to the December update I had the kinds of issues you had, where my P6P would malfunction (scrolling, just freezing) and I had to reboot the device. That was the first 6 weeks of using it. But when I updated to the December build, the issues for the most part went away. Hopefully you are on November and can update to December or wait until the January update drops. But I can say that I almost considered returning the phone due to the bugs until the December update resolved everything and it was like a new phone!
Good luck.
