LTE Connectivity. - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hello,
Quick question here,
I'm getting a 10 but i really want to hows the LTE performs on this phone. I just need an idea of how strong the 4G signal I might get. To get into the perspectives, my HTC M8 gets between 1 to 2 bar max LTE stationary in my room. (As I'm typing this)
Can I expct the new 10 will get me between 3 to 4 bars? Or 3 bars of signal strengh at least since it has a latest LTE catogery from what I understand?
Thank you very much for your time.

Just because the HTC 10 is LTE CAT 9 capable does not mean it will give you a better signal. Your carrier and your location in reference to the cell towers will be the deciding factor on how strong your LTE signal is. It will also depend on the modem and the antenna for LTE. What is your actual signal dBm right now with the current device you are referring to?

That is a really poor signal. That also makes LTE nearly unusable. What does your 3G signal look like? Can you toggle 2G/3G/LTE? Do you know what LTE band you are connected to most of the time? Try LTE Discovery from the Play Store. Open the app and in the top left corner it will show your signal dBm and the band.

VZW Galaxy Nexus known issue with signal strength

VZW Galaxy Nexus next to HTC 4G LTE Phone look at signal strength difference.
Verizon should pull these phones until they have a fix. At my house my VZW 4G LTE Hotspot had full strength and friends VZW Iphone had full bars 3G.
My VZW Galaxy Nexus had 1 LTE bar sometimes but mostly 2 3G Bars.
Needless to say it went back. How dare they sell this defective phone?
Then they had the audacity to charge me a restocking fee after 2 days. The phone line is defective.
All I can say is I just cancelled my FIOS and my LTE Hotspot and returned this phone and will NEVER deal with Verizon Again.
I can't post a link to the image but if you go to nothingelseleft .com /2.jpg you will see a picture of the Nexus vs an HTC right next to it.
HTC 4g lte? And can you post pics of actual signal strength? Bars are not a good indicator

Welcome to old news as of December 2011.
Lets pull a phone from Sprint, and lets compare to it to a phone on Verizon for signal differences.
Sounds like a good idea to me, how bout you guys?
And for the love of GOD, look at actual performance, not bars. Even dbm can be dressed up to look nice by manufacturers. Bars don't mean crap. HTC added an update to the Dinc2 that added a 5th signal bar. So tell me, do you think it has better reception with that 5th bar?

Finally, pic for the lazy.
My Bad one on left was Wifi affecting the dBM, but I did try other phones in store and saw much better dBM still big differences but maybe not that big. Took a picture of this one as it was adjacent.
All I know is performance at my office is far worse than other VZW LTE phones, performance at home is unacceptable 1 bar LTE sometimes but usually 2 3G whereas a VZW Iphone is solid 4 bars 3G

Horrible test.
Rezound = Gingerbread
Nexus = ICS
ICS is the first verison of Android to natively read LTE DBM and separate from EvDo. What you reported on the Rezound was EvDo DBM.
PS--Wifi doesn't affect DBM.
Why horrible test, I couldn't keep a 4G connection at my house but VZW LTE Hotspot was solid and fast. At work I have 2 bars and it keeps flipping to 3G whereas Thunderbolts stay solid 4 bars 4G. Phone has problem and VZW confirmed the problem!

I already explained why that test/screenshot was horrible. It went over your head, so I see no reason to explain further.

The only "problem" Verizon ever confirmed was that the Nexus didn't cheat enough on signal. They "fixed" the issue in the leaked 4.0.4 build.
Oh and to prove that the Galaxy Nexus handles bars and signals differently between 3G and LTE:
This is without moving the phone an inch, 3G and 4G just to back up adrynalyne's info.
I would kill for LTE that strong...
Verizon gives me just a small taste of LTE.

Luckily that is at my desk at work, I actually get a bit stronger at home (Which technically isn't in 4G according to Verizon's "Coverage Maps").

I don't even get a taste at home. I get a signal that is around for about 3 seconds. They mock me.
Which is sad because I have a tower next door, but I guess because it is owned by ATT, they will lease for 3G but not LTE.
WHOA no need to be nasty. First off NOTHING goes over my head so thanks very little for the insult. I re-read it and get it. I was pumped up and upset that I wasted hours at lunch and now I temporarily lost my cell # until it can be ported back to T-Mobile hopefully within 24 hours.
Perhaps that test is not an accurate comparison but the fact is that I can't maintain a 4G connection at my house and the 3G is too slow and is only 2 bars. The phone is subpar and VZW admits it. When I spoke to Technical support they said there is a fix coming.

That is tech strategy to get you off the phone and out of their life.
Techs don't have ETAs on fixes or patches. 'Soon' could mean a day, or 6 months. So no, Verizon hasn't admitted to a problem.
Do I get worse readings than my other devices? Sure. Does it equate to worse performance? Not for me. Sorry it does for you. I ignore signal readings and bars.

[Q] Need help on signal and 4g/lte

Hey guys,
I was just told that tmobile has launched lte in our area, Dallas tx(not sure). At the time I was trying to flash the latest custom roms, I got a problem.
My case is on modem UVBMD1 rom Jedi x14, I have 4g 15mps down and 3mps up, but only 2 bar signal
Modem UVBMD1 rom Jedi master 14, I have 4glte 22mps down and 3mps up, still 2 bar signal
Modem UVBMD1 rom original odexed-rooted, I have 4g 8mps down and 1mps up, full bar signal.
I do not understand why it has so many different speeds on the same modem and same android 4.1.2. Still not sure if anyone in Dallas has real LTE already.
Thanks guys.
Update,
Trying several different setting, realized that when the network option set to automatic 2g/3g/4g, it has full bar signal and 8mps down. When it was set to automatic 2g/3G/4g/lte, it has only two bars and 23mps down. Does it mean there is something wrong with the modem?

Im in Dallas, Have a Nexus 4, Note 2, HTC One.
I can tell you that on my stock Note 2 LTE will give me a solid connection but a low signal strength indication. So 1-3 bars. But i can still pull down 20-30 megs down. Since im on stock its 4G LTE icon and not just 4G.
When your getting the full bars at 8 megs your on the HSDPA+ network. When your getting 23 down with 1-2 bars your on LTE.
Id suggest getting the app SignalCheck Pro.

I guess tmobile should release a new version of modem to fix this problem. So sad that you have the same issue. But still enjoy the 22mps down. Thanks dude.
I think we can all expect signal-strength fluctuations, changing availability in types of service, and general wonkiness for at least the next month or so while TM finishes rolling out LTE in the various markets. It's not like they just flip the switch and it's all set - they have to test and tweak.

Software updates take time.
Problems have to be reported by the masses, then the manufacturer has to try to fix, then it goes to the carrier for approval and small groups of beta testers, then out to the masses.
The good news is, with small system updates like radio firmware, modems and stuff, those do push out much faster then major updates. BUT sometimes they want to put them in with major updates.

Tweaks, init.d mods, etc.... also varies from interference, congestion. Not sure what your entire claim is that tmobile needs to fix but its seems to make little sense as there is no REAL issue just different speeds based on tests that have multiple variables.
Im in Dallas, as i stated in my other post. Ive been getting solid LTE at Home, Old East Dallas and at work. NE Dallas near NW HWY and Skillman.
Ive had solid LTE since they flipped the switch the night of the 16th of June.
Thats on my Note 2, Nexus 4, HTC One.
I have also driven thru parts of Dallas that still give me 4G which is HSDPA+. While they are still working on it i can tell you from first hand experience this is going way better then the Sprint roll out of LTE. I was with Sprint for 11 years and left them in January for T-Mobile. What a nightmare that was.
Anyway, to answer your question about LTE in Dallas its a Yes for me.
I'm in Columbus Ohio and I had to remove the automatic lte/4g/3g/e they seem to be testing lte here. When data is accessed it works breiefly then drops all the way down to no signal. ...then sits at E...then to 4G...then if I don't use my phone....it goes up.....to lte...so I just removed it from searching for lte....now my 4g speed is consistant...until lte is stagnant stable and live...im good

Thanks for this information, I thought it was only me. Good to see that there's nothing to worry about!

Question. .

Is there a way I can boost my signal somehow? I live in Orlando and when I'm in the field at some places I can't get 4g or very good service. For instance when I'm in Wintet Garden and as soon as I cross 50 I don't get 4g or anything. Almost like I fall off the planet. My wife has an s4 also and it does the same thing. Is it just tmo in the metro area?

Sounds like a Tmo reception issue since it happens with both devices.
You can check your dBm signal strength and see how it compares to when you're in a good signal area, both phones compared to each other, and/or individually.
Settings
More
About device
Status
(see attachment below, the lower the dBm, the stronger the signal)
But it sounds like a Tower/reception proprietary issue with T-Mobile.
You can always call Tmo to ask and/or confirm this.....
Here's a few screenshots. The one with the earliest time stamp is at my house, then the next is a mile from my home and the following is a mile after

According to time stamp:
Home - Edge - strongest signal - 79dBm
1 mile away - 4G - weakest 107
2 miles away - LTE - weaker 106 -
I suggest changing your Network mode to possibly the 2nd choice in the list of the 4 options. You can find that here:
Change the setting accordingly till you find the best option.
As I mentioned, call T-Mobile and ask them about their LTE Network in your area, as it is not cconsistent. At your home, you have Edge, which is the slowest speed, but strongest signal. Compared to LTE, which you're connecting to, but weak signal, so suggest to change to no LTE in that area, so it hopefully forces your device to connect to stronger signal. Or words to that affect
Let me know.....

Try this app in the Playstore, as it will give you a better picture of your Signal strength and additional regarding your connection:

Some reasons why mobile phone signal can be weaker or stronger in some areas.
For instance, a very strong signal outside of a structure, but not inside a structure, etc., etc.
The following are just some basics.
Regarding your issue, it my be T-Mobile growing pains regarding their build out, could be your geographic area, etc. etc......

You have a strong Edge signal, as per your first posts and my response.
No LTE available near your home, or 4G.
I thought the issue was when you're away from your home, you were getting weak LTE, which is why I suggested to change your setting as per my previous post, as well as calling Tmo to see network availability in your area.

that tower that is close to me I found out is only a 2g (edge) tower, T-Mobile told me that they are getting their engineers out to look at it. My phone won't switch the towers because I'm so close to it. Wonder why it won't just pull off the 4g tower? Hopefully they fix it but idk how all that goes. probably a new tower I assume?
That was mainly one of the reasons I left T Mobile where I live I got only edge and about a mile away all 4G and now I'm using my t-mobile s4 on AT&T

Cellular signal issues

Is anyone else having issues with cellular signal on Sprint with the lg g5? Mine randomly drops to no bars for a few seconds and the data on cellular seems to be really slow. My upload is usually faster than my down. If i grab the phone a certain way the bars always drop for a second. It i grab it with my right hand at the top and my left hand at the bottom the signal always drops for a second. I installed an app that tells me the signal strength and it defiantly shows in there. The signal strength seems weak all the time though, usually -100 to -110 rspp and the rssnr is usually between 0 and 4.
Does it happen everywhere?

Hello this happened to mine as well.
This was a LTE band switching issue for mine.(In Houston area)
Quick Info:
As you know our phones are Tri-Band ..Sprint Uses Band 41,26,25 and switches between them to get the best "signal". Band 41 here in Houston is the one with better speeds 25,26 are for better indoor signal.
With the above stated you can use a simple tool "Signal Check Lite" to show you which band you are curently connected to. I did a lot of speed testing with each of these bands to get my desired fix below.
My Fix : Use at your own risk /discretion.. I am not responsible for anything that happens to you, your phone or anyone/anything in or around your vicinity while doing this.
1. Get your MSL. (easiest way is to talk to sprint rep nicely do not say what you need it for ... just state you simply want it.)
2. Enter the data programming menu (dial ##3282##)
3.You will be presented with the Main menu, Select LTE (see Screen Shot 1)
4. Select Edit and enter in your MSL (see Screen Shot 2) ..if you input in your MSL incorrectly it will cry and reboot your phone. (Try again from Step 2)
5. Select Band priority (see screen shot 3)
6. My Band priorities (see screen shot 4).. Do not mess with any of the other bands set your prefered band priority .
7. Once done with step 6 ..hit the back button a couple of times and it will say updating changes and reboot.
hope this helps you out.
@uacolon Your LTE Roaming is that on by default or have to turned it on? Mine has been off by default and I keep turning it back on myself. But yet to be in an area to test it.

I have a Nexus 6P and my wife has a HTC A9. Both of those phones are getting better signal reception than my LG G5. I don't know if I have a defective phone but the signal strength is definitely crap. At home my wife's A9 shows -75 dBm and my LG shows -95dBm at the same spot. At work, my LG would drop data while my Nexus 6P would maintain a decent LTE connection. I had a titan color phone and now I'm using the silver one. Both phones had crap reception. I'm thinking of selling the phone. Weird how others are reporting that the G5 has good signal reception.

Weak antenna?

Seeing 4 bars of LTE signal strength on my phone is like seeing a unicorn.
I live in Upstate NY and I have the A705MN phone.
I have tried three different sim cards, all of them of course GSM compatible. The result is exactly the same among all three. I typically get 1 or 2 bars LTE.
My previous phones under the same carrier and same sim card were typically 4-5 bars. (The Wifi strength, BTW, is equal to what I've seen from my other phones.)
What can I do to improve the signal strength?
I've seen posts by those with S10's where they do something to disable specific bands. But I'm not sure how to do that on the A70 phone. I've tried the specific codes that were mentioned in threads for the S10, but those codes do not work on the A70.
Please help. As much as I like the Samsung otherwise, this factor might be the reason I return the phone.

Thank you for the screenshots.
I edited the access point that I'm using and changed it to LTE. But then when I go to select network mode, I cannot chose LTE Only. That option does not show up. I have tried rebooting after editing and selecting the Access Point, and I still do not see that option.
I have tried using apps such as 4g Network Only and have switched to LTE only, but that change does not seem to make a difference or the network goes down altogether.
Any suggestions?

I haven't been able to do this or find what it is you're referring to. I've tried adding a few values through Settings editor apps. Values such as "hw_networkmode_preference" etc.
Doesn't work.
But besides, why would setting the connection to LTE only fix this problem? I don't see how this is not a herring.
Most of the times I am see 2 bars of strength. Every now and then I get 3 bars, and more frequently than that I get only 1 bar. 4 bars is quite rare.
The real problem with this antenna is that if I step inside a supermarket or bathroom then my connection is gone. If I'm traveling around the state of NY, in more remote areas, I'm sure I will not have a chance of any connection.
I would LOVE this phone if it had a better antenna. I can deal with the subpar fingerprint reader. Just give me a strong antenna like all of my previous phones and then I'd be a happy camper!
I decided not to return the phone so I am stuck with this phone.

Setting the band to lte only would help in better reception even at low signal strength. One thing I had noticed in lte band is its consistency in connection speeds and call quality even with low signal. I think this is because of the high bandwidth of the lte signals. But I'm not an expert in it. Try changing the band to lte only. It should work better.

But I'm trying to get better signal, rather than better reception with low signal.
There's got to be something wrong with my phone. It blacks out if I step inside a bathroom in a building and such and it's very rarely at 4 bars.
A thing I noticed. If I go and select 2g/3g only (switch off 4g lte) my signal reception instantly switches to full (4 bars) Usually I get around 2 bars with LTE active.
The strange part is that even with lte off I can still receive an lte 4g signal when outside..this is perfect for me as it means i have a really strong signal (reception) indoors but still have the benefit of 4G outside. I don't quite understand it tbh. I mean i have switched to "2g/3g only" yet i still see 4G pop up in the status bar on my commute, and it definitely receiving 4G speeds. I'm not sure if it's a bug or not but I kinda like it.

That's a terrific idea. Thank you for bringing that up.
I am implementing your suggesteion and it's nice to see 3-4 bars of strength again.
I don't need the fastest data connection. I just need a strong or secure basic data connection, since most of the time I'm not doing anything data intensive with my phone anyway when I"m away from a wifi connection.
But I'm not sure if my phone hops up to LTE at anytime.. I wish had the same "bug" that you do. I just started testing with your settings so I'll see if I can get it so that 3g is the preferred and basic network and 4g is the optional...
After another day, I'm back to LTE/3g/2g auto.
The general reception even for 3g or 2g is lower overall than what I saw from every other phone I have used. So in areas where I can expect to have a relatively low signal I get a particularly low signal for all bands, 4g, 3g, and 2g. That being the case, there's no practical difference if I cap my connection or not.
Samsung better warranty this phone. Does anyone know who I should call?
Since I bought my phone through an Ebay seller and the phone is West Carribean stock, not USA stock, which is where I am, I have no warranty on this phone.
