Iris scanner = ir blaster - Note 7 Questions & Answers

Is it possible to program the IRIS SCANNER's IR LED/RECEIVER to be an IR Blaster?
Thank you!

Word out there is no. They might be utilising different technology. Not really sure how those work.

This is going to be the thread topic that appears most often, isn't it?
Bottom line, why would you want an IR blaster on the front of the device (which would make the screen face away from you when pointing it at your devices)

Haha it sure would look funny, but personally, if someone did manage to leverage the IRIS IR as a Remote IR, then I don't mind the funny angle of using it as a remote AT ALL! I am in the small minority (it seems) who thoroughly use the IR blaster on my Note 4 and LG V10, so I sorely miss that feature! Honestly, I'd have that over the IRIS scanner, but that's just me !
Used to be that if you were a Note owner, there were no sacrifices. Note 4 was the Swiss Army Knife of sensors LOL! IR Blast, Heart rate sensor, SD Card, man... those were the days! Sigh... LOL!

You're not the only one. I do regret IR going away. It seems all good things are gone

Simple..just stick a small mirror on your forehead and align it so the IR signal can reflect off of your skull and into the desired receiver, all whilst not having to look away from your screen. Genius, can't wait for Samsung to patent a mirrored headband!

I'm hanging onto my Note 4 for awhile. I'm older, and getting up and down some days can be an issue for me, the IR Blaster is a lifesaver since it can turn on my air conditioner, my lights and even a fan I have, and my phone is always with me. I'm probably a tiny minority, though, since most other phones are ditching the IR Blaster as well. When my knees are killing me I wouldn't care how funny it looked to be able to turn something on!!

Amen to that Sir! Note 4 IR and the V10, on both phones IR is my most used feature outside of regular phone functions!

shhhh... people with "learn to let go" will get all mad if they see that people using IR are... many... and they regret losing it

If you can't live without IR feature get a $ 30.00 Broadlink RM PRO and you are done.
It even supports RF so that you can open your automated gate i.e.

Was really hoping to ditch the Note 4 for the Note7 but no IR blaster and an unswappable battery just kills it for me (despite how sweet of a phone it is). I'm afraid if my note 4 ever does die than I am going to have to start to look at other manufactures for the first time since I started carrying a smartphone. I really wanted to like this phone....

I tried installing a remote control app to see if the iris infered would work. Sad to report that it doesn't work. Gives a message saying the device does not support IR Blaster.

I'll be keeping my Note 4 for around the house use. But the Note 7 will be my daily device.

You didn't really think that Samsung would go back to swappable batteries, did you? I was hoping for a 4000 mAh but my hopes got dashed again. That's why I didn't go for the 5, but the Note 4 needs to be upgraded. I've read that this battery is a Li-po instead of Lithium Ion. That's supposed to make a difference but I haven't checked up on it yet. I've been watching the reviews to see how the phone performs in battery tests, memory management etc...then I'll order but I haven't seen anything yet.

They'd be dumb if their sales were way down because of that decision. Since they're still doing phenomenal in sales, I'd say they're not dumb. They're saving money on a feature that 9/10 people don't care about or use.

I think its more than just 1/10 ?. 2nd you cannot correlate sales with disappearance of IR. Most people are at the end of their 2 years plan, they need an upgrade... as Samsung is the absolute only option of a phone... they wil buy it anyways with or without IR. That doesn't mean that Samsung didn't fkup big time.

It was cool, but I dont really use them like I hoped I would
I got a set but I've only played with them. It's a neat novelty but at the cost not really practical. If they were cents each rather than dollars I might use them more.
Just register your phone on Samsung.com and you'll get a 50% off coupon...buy your TecTiles with that. I have mine by the door to toggle WiFi, in the bathroom to launch Play Music, and by the toilet to launch YouTube.
I use mine a lot, but my only gripe is that the phone has to be on and unlocked in order for it to work...but its better than nothing I guess.
I have thought about putting one in the living room for guests to use to connect to WiFi without asking for the password.

There.....Meh....
I got them for 50% off, so the price was more of a non point for me. Honestly though, I've only used one of them and then sort of forgot about them. They're nothing you can't just do as well on the phone itself. Fun to show off for a second I guess.
I got 10 of them off eBay for under 11bucks but only found my self using 3 of them lol they cool to play with but i hardly find my self using it everyday lol

How is that not legitimate? Oh that's right, that is simply an opinion. Luckily, I live in America, and I am free to choose what is legitimate for my needs. I guess you missed the connect to WiFi without having to scrummage through to find the password.

woah buddy, lighten up, lol. of course that was "an opinion", and mine obviously. sorry that I think having an NFC tag setup to launch YT when I'm taking dump is ridiculous. if you don't want conversations that are inherently going to have opinions, and possibly opinions that are not yours, don't post in a public forum, maybe?

no... just want to it things I would expect a phone to do. I'm not even sure how that statement is a "witty comeback", as it's contextually nonsense.
seriously, relax.
Not ubiquitous because people like you keep saying it isn't. Buy it, try it out...you may find something interesting that will intrigue another to do the same. My local mall uses NFC to give out free songs or magazine articles. What's a couple of bucks gonna hurt? You already bought a $300+ phone...might as well use its features.
You don't have to use the Samsung TecTiles...you can buy any of them, and download an NFC programmable app.

believe me, I wish I could think of uses for them that would do something I thought was functional, because gawdamn, the idea is cool. and I do love anything new tech-wise. i'm always an early adopter.
(and I bought the phone outright. $700 bucks w/ tax. worth every damn penny.)
so far, the only implementation I am seeing make NFC worthwhile is sBeam/filesharing, and google wallet (if it worked right now).
I will be keeping a watch on the tech, and I tend to make frivolous purchases (like the AllShare TV dongle), and perhaps I'll keep an eye on you, see if you come up with anything that sparks some ideas.
Anything useful for my personal routine (turning off ringer at work etc.) I have set up in tasker. For little stuff like opening you tube while on toilet, (lol) it just doesnt seem more convienent to tap phone to a tag than to click the app on my homescreen. Tasker really does all of the automation for me for work, my car etc.

Jelly Bomb has nfc with the screen off built in. I tried pulling the Nfc.apk from the 10.20 build and putting it on my own deodexed LJC rom but it didn't allow nfc with the screen off.
One thing that I thought would be useful is if I could set it up as a proximity sensor. Ex: when I put the phone in my car dock it turns on blue tooth and when I take it out it turns it off without having to touch another tag?

That is the one I use. You can setup toggles with only one nfc label. For example. Scan it and it will turn off the alarm. And if you scan it again it will turn it on. It really expand the uses of the labels. And you can program e series of actions with it. Hope this help you

yes, just set it up to Toggle the bluetooth - that way if it's on it will turn off and visa versa.
I have similar setups and it works like a charm.
and the tiles will work with Every phone that has NFC, so even when you get a future phone, the tiles will continue to work. I think they are the bees knees.
they become more useful once you mod the phone to work with nfc screen off (someone posted a mod but it only works from lockscreen not screen off hopefully that will be fixed soon)
I have one each on my washer and dryer. they set a "timer" that goes off and tells me when the washer and dryer are done (30 minutes for washer 70minutes for dryer)
I have one on my car to auto set my car locator position one the dev for car locator gets that working right.
I also plan to use them for geo caching. I hope geocaching.com integrates NFC functionality into their service soon is VERY ideal for that.
I also plan to use them on "bins" in storage. I store what is in the bin in the tag. tap and now I know whats inside (working on that soon)
you can use QR codes but they are a pain (have to load an app) and then wait for camera to focus AND they don't like low light. NFC don't care tap done.
also plan to put on on my Radio Transmitter for my competition rocket gliders. tap and 15minute countdown timer starts.

[Q] New nexus 7 and an always on mic

I am just curious if any one think there is any chance it will have the feature that the moto x does with the always on mic.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
I dont think this feature would be nearly as useful as on a mobile phone.
I think the mic is always on because of Google Now and the ability to do voice commands at will.
Honestly I can see the benefits but if you are too lazy to pretty a button then its pretty sad. I'd rather see a dedicated voice button then always on mic. Not only for security but also because if it is always on, then it is always processing. Seems like a waste of resources 99% of the time.
Just grab a Bluetooth headset and press the button on the unit, and it will ask for a command. At least mine does.
Plus what's next? Always on video? A Google employee moving into my house? Cats and dogs, living together?

That has to be the stupidest thing i have heard someone say.
Does your TV have a remote. What are you lazy to walk to your TV?
Its an evolution of technology. Why should i have to touch it when i could NOT touch it.
I am not huge on voice controls because if i am already touching my device i would rather just do it with my finger.
If i don't have to even look at my phone to send a message or skip a song then why would I.

ROFL
Even Star Trek's communicators on their shirts have to be pressed. And Star Trek knows the future better then we do. Nuff said.
Btw I'm only half serious.
Something like Google Glass, I understand IF it was paired to YOUR VOICE. But a phone...? It doesn't need to be listening every second just to grab 1 or 2 commands. Have you ever tried using Google Now in a noisy environment. I can only see my phone grabbing all sorts of random commands and doing random acts. Pass on that.
Even Google Glass reviews show it picking up commands from others and screwing things up.

I was under the impression the always on mic was powered by different hardware specs ie: the super low voltage battery when sleeping and a low power mic. Seems like this will be hard to implement for many devices without these hardware features.
I think always on mic is a moto thing, dealing with their custom made snapdragon aka "motorola x8 computing system", has a whole core dedicated to it, and another dedicated to gestures. I think current devices could do it fine, but battery life would suffer without motorolas software and hardware tweaks.
Of course I don't really know, that's just my guess. Guess we'll all find out next week

I have my new Nexus 7 in hand. I am pretty sure that is a moto only feature but i bet we see all the big players picking it up in the future.
The always on MIC is monitored by a dedicated low power core on the Moto X. N7 doesn't have that chip.

I already have a Samsung smart watch... I pull it out of my pocket, press the button on the top-right, and I can see what time it is. Among other things it also makes phone calls, records video, and is quite adept at just generally being pretty awesome.
I don't see the necessity for the smart watch, especially since it has to be paired with a phone. It seems cool and all, but I think it's far too limited to be used regularly, intuitively speaking, and is also a bit pricey and gimmicky, imo. Of course, I'm sure some will come along and sing of it's praises, but to that poor misguided chap, I simply reply: bellow your misguided attempts of impression to someone else, for I remain thoroughly unimpressed!
Instead of a smart watch, i would rather a Star Trek style communicator badge.
The Note 3 does look like a decent upgrade from the N7000.
One thing i would like to see in a smartphone is a digital radio receiver, rather than (or in addition to) FM. I know digital radio isn't as ubiquitous as FM - and the standard varies from place to place (DAB+ here in Australia, iirc). But it would be pretty neat, and certainly innovative.

And seeing how t-mobile is dragging their feet with updating us without even giving us a reason, the nexus line is that much more appealing

I'd love to see what Apple counters with xD

I just want Samsung to come out with a phone with an IPS screen and a faster camera, everything else with the GS4 is as good or better than the iPhone 5S imo.

I would just like T-Mobile and Samsung to get me a phone that a) works with Bluetooth without breaking up; b) works with Speaker without breaking up, and c) actually does what it is supposed to do - when I want it to do so, regardless of where I am.
I really don't see this thing (S4) any better than my Bionic!

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention a camera that actually focuses on the subject in the frame, and stays focused until it actually takes the picture.

IR blaster

Will Note 7 have IR blaster and if not.. do anybody know any 3.5mm jack IR sender/receiver so that I can control my climate air and TV's etc...

It doesn't have an IR blaster... but it does have an IR LED that is used for the Retinal Unlocking. I wonder if someone will be able to write an app that uses that as an IR blaster. Since it is front facing, it might be a challenge to use the screen and blaster towards a device, but its better than nothing.
Why would it be removed? Makes zero sense! !!

Percentage of people that use it against cost. It wasn't in the 5 either. Even if it only costs them 5 bucks to add it, 5 dollars times 1 million units (they'll sell more but for easy math) is 5 mil $$. Since usage is likely around 1% of users, they'd rather keep those funds for other features, R&D, or just profit.

IR Blaster is the biggest none argument ever.
Does your TV, DVD etc not come with a remote? If so use that...
What a dumb argument this is....

that is totally your opinion....and if you're going to pay 850 bucks for a phone it should have everything and more that your had in your last note 4.....i mean its like you going to your favorite restaurant and ordering your favorite thing and poof one day the restaurant doesn't use the same recipe on top of that they charge you more......some people use there phones way more than just for being phones

I"m doing exactly that with the locking of the bootloader for US builds in combo with this I"m done with samsung and I'm not the only one as I've heard others as well....that is an Apple move if you don't like move on.....I'm on android for a reason
wow so much passion over a little issue. buy a htc phone which can also learn ir signals, or another phone that does have IR if you cant live without it... id pay $10 extra for the IR blaster edition but im not to going to stress over it
there are devices to plug into the audio jack and can send IR signals, most are crap but im sure one of them will work with most appliances... why dont you guys direct your efforts in that direction and then share your findings instead of making posts on every new phone that comes out.... just a suggestion.
here's a head start.

I have a Harmony Smart Control remote. Nice thing about that is it can work with its included RF remote or any iOS/Android device.
Works way better than any IR Blaster I had built into a phone (for one, it was RF & WiFi - the base station sends all the IR commands). Pointing a phone at the TV to control volume is so outdated.

It's been gone since the Note 5 so it's not to much of a surprise. HTC also took it out of the One this year. Looks like LG is the only sticking with it for now.

....you ask a smart ass question i give you a smart ass answer why the **** not?
It's amusing when people cling to the past. The past two product cycles there were huge arguments over the absence of FM radio. Granted there were valid points (EG: emergencies where cell lines are down, free music without data use) but at the end of the day FM radio on cell phones is dying.
IR is going the way of the Dodo too being replaced at a minimum by RF but more prevalently by BT and Wi-Fi. Seriously, as wireless tech has advanced what value does a line-of-site protocol still hold? The remote app I use on my phone to control my Galaxy View is BT. My TiVo Bolt's remote is RF and the app on my phone and tablets controls it by Wi-Fi. My thermostat is controlled by Wi-Fi. Amazon's Echo and other IoT devices use Wi-Fi. Sorry IR fans, your technology is dying. If you must have it then Samsung's phones aren't for you. Complaining about it isn't going to bring it back.
The point many are missing... Replaceable battery gone.. "don't cling to the past" (lol dumbest argument EVER... its like 2nd child is born without a nose.. and you expect 3rd..."nose...a thing of the past.. dont cling to the past).. so lol again. Moving on... Sd card gone... "don't cling to the past"...thank god people do still have a brain (and we got SD back)... now IR gone... again" don't cling to the past"... lol... do you notice a pattern here?
In this case I'll await the day phone function is gone and I'll be right there with.. "don't cling to the past"... lol
The point why the freck are we paying more and more money while functions are less and less.
You know what the bottom line is... for 5$ per unit they saved... they lost 900$ from me... and from others can they lose clients enough to make them lose overall... yes... if not this year... in the near future with next 5 features dropped.
Over and out

True 'replacement' phone for the Note 7...

And the winner is…
The Note 9. I mean Mate 9.
http://playfuldroid.com/alleged-huawei-mate-9-and-mate-9-pro-renders-had-been-leaked/
People should have waited, instead of "rushing in". Patience is a virtue.
This phone looks identical to the Note 7.
Makes you wonder, doesn't it?
I am raving about this phone specifically because we all know the Note 7 was "the most beautiful phone that ever was". Well now, we have a possible identical "replica", yet some of the specs simply blow away all competition bar none! Insane price tag of $1300 to prove it.
(The website I linked was used to give us an impression of what to expect. By all means check out some of the more established sites, such as gsmarena for more substantial information)
To be revealed on November 3rd.
I want it! Who's with me?
Who are we? Huawei.
(World's 3rd largest Cellphone Manufacturer. Who knew, right?)
It is nice but it is not blue . Plus I have read the premium version will only be available in China.

What's wrong with Lavender?
Somewhere I read (cliche statement right there) there will be a multitude of colors to choose.
China only? Then why give us the 1300 figure in Dollars? Please why China? I am moving to China. You coming MateFreak?
LO. Sure if they waterproof it for me. After 1300 USD I will have to swim back home
Downright stupid not to make the pro version available in Europe, I'll rather wait for the note 8 then
Dudes. Please don't do the silly thing all tech websites do, like "hey! best note 7 replacements" and then show phones WITHOUT STYLUS... Each time I am forced to take the bait and realize that's its yet another big screen phone with the exact same specs as any other flagship phone. A phone without a Stylus can't replace the Note 7.
Yet no one says "no stylus no dice" and rushes out to get the V20, Pixel, iPhone, etc, etc.
This is a Note 7esque Phone, and we are on the Note 7 forum. I mean sure, go for the Note Pro 12.2, even a S7 Edge, but to think otherwise?

I totally understand this. To be honest, I am still trying to figure out why so many people got the Note7, but admit the stylus wasn't important or a thing they used. Why didn't they upgrade to the S7 Edge six months earlier. To me, the point of the Note series was the stylus once the other phones got big screens, too. There is no other phone that makes taking hours of notes easy to do and easy to reference.
I am stuck in a horrible limbo without a true replacement phone. I keep hoping someone is going to post a "I found a replacement" link that has a stylus.

Premium build, Better looking form factor, larger screen, latest tech. etc. I use my stylus, just not as much as people think you're supposed to, that's like saying "why do you have a waterproof phone if you don't go swimming?" waterproof or not, my phone will never see water. If the S8 was an exact clone of the Note 7 minus the s-pen, I'm all over it. But if it comes out looking like another rounded, pebble-shaped, bubbly piece of glass like the S7 I'll once again pass and wait for the Note 8 that i hope has the sharper corners and better overall aesthetics . I work professionally as a graphic designer and freelance digital illustrator, and STILL maybe only pull the stylus out once a week to jot down a grocery list or idea, unless you're someones personal assistant or something like that, I really don't see the s-pen never leaving your hand.
The Note isn't and hasn't ever been just about the s-pen.

The s7 edge has "sharper" edges on the screen the Note 7 are more subtle making it easier to use. The always on display on the Note 7 is MUCH more useful. These are the two biggest and most important differences to me between the Note 7 and s7 edge. I don't use the S-pen all that often but there are some situations where it's unbelievably useful.

I thought so as well but My Wife's didn't. Third party apps still do not show up on her AOD. I have cleared cache and it did not help.

My wife's AOD in her s7 edge is practically useless. Basically just a clock.
My hope is that the note 5 gets the AOD when it gets the Nougat update. I just purchased a note 5 to use till the next note comes out.
I'm considering Pixel XL with Project FI. It's a downgrade for sure, but It's a fastest android phone and from Google. And Project FI is only available on Google phones - basically, unlimited text/talk plus some data, best coverage in the US and possibly the world for only $25 a month.
What do you think?

Its no way as useful even with the update.
It won't show you calendar appointments and tasks like it does on Note 7. Other SPen related features like pinning hand written notes on the AOD screen are amazing useful and convenient. These could never come to the S7 Edge.
