Chainfire has already said his CF-ROOT method won't work on our Note 4 because the bootloader is locked.
That post was referring to devices with Android 5.0 or Lollipop. It cites the difficulty of rooting Android L due to Android closing up some security holes that allow devices to be rooted.
The takeaway from this that Note 4 users should adhere to is; ensure that you don't install any OTA updates from At&t if you want to root in the future with limited difficulty. At least that's what I believe the post boils down to.

That's a hard bargain considering I don't know anyone who WOULDN'T want to update to lollipop.
I'll stay of 5 if that means I can root this device. Honestly once rooted 5.0 roms can be developed and flashed so taking the Ota doesn't make sense for an xda community member.

To be honest, flashing a rom on an AT&T note 4 seems very very unlikely.

Yeah I know. It's looking more likely that this device may never be rooted. That is sad only because that is the main drawl to android for me is the ability to fully customize my device. I've never cared about the warrantee or tripping counters, I always know the risk I take. Maybe once I've paid off this phone I'll switch over to TMOBILE,that is as long as Google/Samsung haven't completely locked the phones down by then.

Hell, if that's the way it's going to be, might as well switch to the iPhone 6 Plus....Yeah yeah I know....but at least with the iphone, NO BLOATWARE! I'll just overpay the $500 for the 128gb, and stick with that for at least 3, maybe 4 years....I know I'll be giving up widgets, and custom ROMS, but Hell, if we can't Root or unlock the bootloader, we're not going to have custom ROMs anyway. And all this bloatware is unacceptable. Oh well, I knew before I picked up the NOTE 4 yesterday, that ATT had locked down this phone, so it's my own fault I'm going to have to go through the tedious return process in less than 14 days from now...but at least Apple keeps getting away from dictating to ATT that they will NOT be allowed to put bloatware on the iphone.

Face to face, the note 4 decimates the iPhone. Root or no root. If you want root and don't care about the note features (which in assuming is the case since you're considering an elongated iPhone) why not get the nexus 6.

You know, you have an excellent point. IF ATT doesn't try to lock down the Nexus 6, I think that is exactly what I'll do, though I'll miss the s-pen, but not like the iphone had that either. Better make sure I get the 64gb version since it has no microsd card slot. Or I can wait for Sony's enticing Z4 rumored for a March launch....don't know if ATT will be locking that one down either though...
It's a shame too, because I could give up custom ROM's, but NOT Root! I need my Titanium back-up!
I doubt they would lock down the Nexus line. The whole point of getting a Nexus device is for the open source features ie root and unlocked bootloader. I can understand why they lock down Galaxy devices. They are aimed at productivity and business so it makes sense they want them to be as secure as possible. What I don't understand is why people still complain. This has been going on for years and we have known that ever since the GS4 all future Samsung phone on the AT&T network would be locked down so if it's anyone fault it's the user who buys the phone expecting things to change. It's insanity at its heart. I'm not dissapointed because I bought the Note 4 knowing full well it'll probably never get root or an unlocked bootloader. Besides doing so voids all warranty anyways and I wouldn't wanna risk pretty much a 900 dollar device. Also Samsung has made great strides at appeasing people who like customizing there phones and cleaning up the UI. Still there is always that slim chance someone at Samsung will leak the unlock keys for the device. It's happened before and with how popular the Note 4 is getting, this might very well happen. If not, nobody to blame but ourselves.

Why complain ? Wanting more is absolutely normal. Aimed at business? Why would they do that? the most money is with everyday users. You remember that thing called blackberry ? Did they aim for business lol? Insanity at heart ? Such strong language. Usually there are ways to return back to stock so you wouldn't be risking much if such methods were avaliable.

If you root on 4.4.4 and safestrap works to flash roms, you'll only be able to flash 4.4.4 roms, never a 5.0 rom.
That is, of course, unless the bootloader gets unlocked.
Right. To get to "L" with root you would either need an unlocked bootloader, or a root method that works on "L" after install.
4.4.x root + Safe strap won't ever get you to "L" by itself.

Hell, I'm not that desperate to flash a custom rom anytime soon. I'd settle for Root so i can use my precious Titanium for backing up app/game save data AND to freeze Samsung and ATT's damn crapware.
I pledged $50 on the bounty thread for Root and No Trip Knox.
But as mentioned earlier, might take the Note 4 back and wait for Nexus 6.
You also could just get the tmobile note 4 and use it on att...

About the only reason, right now anyways, that I would want root is so I can turn off a few more of the "bloat" apps. Right out of the box I was able to disable many of the offending apps. Sure- they are still installed but at least they are not running.
for my average usage, I am easily able to get through the day, (off charger at about 6AM and back on for bed around 10PM), with about 25-30% left over.
If we get root, GREAT! I'll dance a little dance around a campfire at midnite. :fingers-crossed:
If we don't get root, I'll be ok. TB will be lost to me but there are alternatives.

Actually it means that if you want a Note 4 on lollipop with AT&T you will not be able to have root.
Well at least without finding a way to unlock the boot loader. The only way to get root on lollipop is to modify the kernel. Which you CAN NOT do without an unlocked boot loader. So if root is a must have for you then you will be stuck on KitKat.
Unless some genius out there finds a way to unlock the boot loader having root on this phone will only last a short while.

They figured out how to unlock the borrower on the lg g3. Which gives me a small bit of how we will see it for a Note 4 as well, but they still haven't figured out the note 3 so I'm am not holding my breath.

Wanting more is normal but asking for something that's already been confirmed to not happen and for valid reasons is absolutely asinine and immature. There are ways to return to stock but there are not ways to fix KNOX from a voided phone. Seriously you make no sense. The Galaxy line has been indeed aimed more for business. Business is actually where the money is at. I'm not talking a couple small businesses buying a ten line bundle, I'm talking about corporate contracts, which is what Samsung is aiming for. You can't compare Blackberry to Samsung. Blackberry completely ignored the everyday user. Samsung aims at both but keeps business in mind first, hence why they are pushing KNOX and it is indeed working.
Chainfire posted a long writeup of what the future holds for root on Android phones including Lollipop. It's an interesting read.

its not even a poormans route anymore to get a carrier phone over a factory one, you need to choose between functionality or reception..

The lack of root in the foreseeable future really ruined my excitement for this phone I have gotten so used to all the nice features of root (in addition to custom ROMs) like Ti Backup, AdAway, customization, etc. that I do not want to fork out the money for a phone that doesn't feel truly mine.
That said, I'm confident the devs will find a solution. Just like every iPhone has been jailbroken there will be root for the Note 4!
There is a root for the note 4.....just not ours ...as intended...if we want root we bought the wrong device...I got it the day before it came out in the mail and was excited I wasn't aware that it was going to be so neglected...I was at least hoping for a safestrap like the note 3 I had that I don't anymore because it shattered and they gave me this as a replacement...now I can't get root...way too sleezy...they got me!

I certainly don't see it as 'sleezy', as the devices were always known to be locked. It isnt like AT&T were endorsing root or safe strap in the first place... Or secretly locked it at the last minute without telling anyone.
But opinions on morality aside, it is disappointing that root may take a while. Though I'm still optimistic that it will happen eventually.

AT&T Note 3 still does not have an unlocked boot loader. I wouldn't hold out for one on this phone. Also everyone with locked boot loaders will loose root permanently when lollipop rolls out.

Yeah, if you can afford it, for the rest of us though, it sounds like we'll be out of luck.
Maybe we need to start looking at hardware hacks, like when chipping a console?
Maybe an insecure boot.img can root this phone.
Focus on the boot loader. If it gets unlocked we will be fine with root.

Which is why I will be buying the T-Mobile Note 4 and unlocking. They already have root and TWRP.
At the very least, I just want AdAway to be functional.
I may sell my att one when my bb pre-order arrives and buy a T-Mobile version...

nice having posts like this just right up front.... I come to xda for the modding and mainly rooting of my phones.... att releases a totally locked down note 4 and already people are speaking out about its probably not going to get an unlock like the s5... I give up all hope of seeing a subsidized note 4 and start waiting on a nexus 6 to see if the bootloader is still unlockable.
So within 3 posts and less than 15 minutes I learned abandon the att n4... quick and easy... ty xda :highfive:

Im coming from the S5 I have faith in the Devs here in the beginning with the S5 seemed like all hope was lost and then out of nowhere root was available. I'm going to enjoy the device and give whoever has the means enough time to do their thing it will happen eventually
I think one of the best things that we all love about android is ability to change your phone and add what you want via root. My question is this, if the future of android is to lock all bootloaders, why should we stay with android and not get an I phone? If I can't get viper4android I'm not sure if I'm gonna stay with android. What are your thoughts?

If u really like a locked down device get an iphone. Last jailbreak took 11 months to get. Stock icons sucks on ios. At least u have options with android without root.

Because an iPhone is more locked down than an Android. It would be really dumb to downgrade to iOS just because your Android has a locked bootloader... That's just like replacing your gaming PC with a cheap Android tablet just because you don't like the new Ubuntu update.

So far, only the VZW carrier version is confirmed to be locked.

Everyone that has a iPhone isn't dumb. It's not about which OS is the best because they both have their plus and minus. The thing is that android is starting to lock their phones down just like Apple. The options that we all love about android are starting to fade (bootloader, removable battery, sd card). So if this keeps going on, android will be very similar to Apple, which is something none of us want.

We won't know until someone gets the phone in their hands. Verizon is definitely locked, but phones bought from Google may not be locked.

I didn't *say* anything about the intelligence of Apple users, nor did I really talk crap about iOS. All I said was switching to an OS which is *even more* locked down, just because the bootloader is locked, is a dumb decision. If they're both locked down more people will move to whichever OS they like because they are becoming more and more similar. You're dumd if you think that's not going to happen for whatever reason that a person chooses is best for them, and not what you think is the best decision. Wow!!!

That being said, I thought I saw someone who said they got in touch with a Google rep who said the bootloader will unlocked, at least from the Play Store. Take it with a grain of salt, since not all manufacturers' reps know the difference between a bootloader and carrier locks, but this is Google we're talking about.
Now I'm not the most savy on bootloaders, more just an open source dev. But the nexus 6 I got from a verizon store had a locked boot loader. The nexus 6p I had for a short time had a locked boot loader. But they were unlocked fairly easily. From what I have always seem every phone had a locked boot loader that requires it to be unlocked to allow access and write to protected partitions. But the issue that I know is when in gets encrypted is when the issue arises. Without getting the verizon models in hand by a dev, we don't currently know if it is encrypted yet, or has this already been discovered? I highly doubt any verizon rep on the phone or on a chat will know the answer to that question. I believe the htc 10 on verizon has an encrypted bootloader, but it also had the htc bootloader, I assume the pixel is going to have the google boot loader. I just personally wanted to clarify it for my self if my understanding is correct, from someone who has a better grasp on this.

The fact that this guy has the phone already makes me think he's unique. Possibly a developer that 1) already unlocked it and just put everything back in just to do an unboxing video or 2) it came that way to him since he is or may be a developer or reviewer.
Either way it's promising that it can be unlocked. All the Nexus phones came locked but were easily unlocked. The Verizon one worries me, but I imagine if it's the exact same model as the Google store version, it shouldn't be hard to get it unlocked by 3rd party means. I'm just waiting on full confirmation before I make my purchase.

Don't even bother calling Verizon to ask. They will emphatically say "yes it absolutely comes unlocked!" In reality they are referring to the carrier lock, not bootloader. They have no clue on bootloaders.

Hi guys, Im sorry if this is a silly question, I'm not an expert, I remember when it was fairly easy to flash custom roms back in the days of S2, S4... but now things have changed so much that personally I get confused between this many versions and variants... I have read along many posts that suggest my S9 can not be rooted, because of locked bootloader, but I have some mixed up settings(I think) in my S9 that doesn't help me to be completely sure.
My S9 has the model SM-G960U printed on the back., but in my Settings under Device Information, my model displayed is SM-6960U1 and my build number is R16NW.G960U1UES3ARI1; I just want to know if I can really root it, I don't intend to flash custom roms to be honest, Im satisfied with just to be able to root, install my TitaniumBackUp Pro and freeze/defrost apps I use from time to time, I have read also the people root their S9 but lacking vowifi or camera performance, but I don't know if that would apply to me.
Also, I tapped the build number 7 times in order to enable Developer options, and I couldn't find OEM Unlock on it, that is not good isn't?
I just got this S9, hence my caution to ask before jump and flash things that could brick it.

There's nothing to flash because the bootloader is locked.

Rather than start another thread, Iv got a couple of questions. is this because he has a snapdragon version?
As aposed to the exynos version which can be unlocked?

Yes. There are some snapdragon variants that can be unlocked (9600) and they're sold in China and South America afaik. Limited support but there is lineage and twrp here.

Sorry for the huge delay, this has been a rough week for me, and many thanks for your answers.
it really sucks though, and I suppose there's not much hope in a possible way to unlock the bootloader in the future?
I'm not that good seller nor I have the will to actually put it on sell, I assume I will have to accept the fact that I won't be able to root this one ever :/

Snapdragon bootloaders have not been unlocked since at least the S7 days (Maybe earlier), buy a Exynos S9 if you want and unlocked BL
I used to root all the time. But don't see the need some the S7. Phones are so optimized stock. I've never needed to. Granted I do miss CMMod

I used to do a lot of Moto tweaking and they're among the easiest but I no longer root or even want to. Though there are a couple of things I miss like Titanium Backup.
Like can the t-mobile,Att or Verizon version of the devices be rooted. Thanks In advance!!!

So basically they are still locking down all the bootloaders correct that sucks why would you pay so much for your device when you get rid of it makes no sense.

Im with you , I always rooted my devices since I had a G1 (HTC Dream). Since Pie was released, and custom launchers are so good these days, I haven't bothered with any of my devices
....I do miss being able to remove system apps though (truly remove them) ahhh memories of the days when CyanogenMod was what a person would do immediately after getting a new device ....
I don't miss the headaches , the bugs, the constant flashing new roms, the constant clockworkmod/TWRP backups and restores ...
Android is now so polished that I honestly see no need for root anymore
The only need for root I have is getting my Proxmark to work with my phone.
I miss gravity box that's it

Why do you get bragging that you have root access? Does it make you feel superior... This is a wonderful forum for people who love Root and you're simply just rubbing it in people's faces. I just don't get it!

what r u talking about?
the conversation was about root and ppl were sharing they dont really need root and i said root is fun.. no bragging about anything..
instead of criticizing others opinions if you want root so bad just have a look around and you can achieve the same thing..
theres many others rooted at this point.. theres been a xda feed/article posted by another user who rooted his usa n20 then theres multiple twrp threads of users who rooted their usa model s10s s20s n20s n10s..theres even an app in labs to help u figure it out.. why ppl cant read or search before complaining, i just dont get it!

Is this still the only way to root on the U.S. variants? I have seen this floating around for some time and while I have nothing but respect for the developer of this method, I have never paid for unlocking or root and don't want to begin. I would like root, but my desire is not so strong so as to pay $100 to obtain it.
My last rooting experience was with the ENG kernel on my S7 Edge. It sucked. LOL. I know what you've linked isn't a root service but an unlock, however after growing tired of the instability with the ENG kernel I eventually went stock. So now I've been without root for a couple years and have learned to live with it, which is why I don't really want to pay. If that's the only way, though, so be it.

So why aquire a device with a locked bootloader? There's lots of options for unlocked bootloaders even within Galaxy devices.

All of them? Samsung releases every model/device in the USA lol.. not sure what your question is.. U U1 W models are usually not possible to unlock bl and root without paid service so if you are asking about USA models that can do that by default then I cant think of any.
