Cannot flash Global ROM to Mi Max 32GB/3GB - Xiaomi Mi Max Questions & Answers

This is my first Xiaomi phone and it seemed to arrive with a Chinese ROM on it (V7.3.14.0.MBCCNDC) so I have been trying to change it to a proper official Global ROM with zero success so far.
I have downloaded the ROM from here: http://en.miui.com/download-302.html
Filename: miui_MIMAXGlobal_V7.5.3.0.MBCMIDE_267a7c4439_6.0.zip
If I follow either of these guides (I do not need TWRP, just the official ROM) then I always end up failing at the same part.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-max/how-to/installing-twrp-locked-bootloader-t3406501
http://en.miui.com/thread-307139-1-1.html
I reboot the phone into EDL mode by holding down both volume buttons and then connecting a USB cable after the phone has vibrated and stayed on a black screen. The PC then detects the phone as a Qualcomm device and assigns a port number to it.
MiFlash then finds the port number and I point the file browser to the extracted zip folder named: miui_MIMAXGlobal_V7.5.3.0.MBCMIDE_267a7c4439_6.0
After selecting the clean all radio button at the bottom and then pressing the flash button the status and time elapsed meters start moving and then after a few seconds the status changes to 'can not read from port COMxx' (I have used a few different port numbers so it can be COM10, COM20, COM3 etc).
So far I have tried this on three different PC's, 2 running Windows 10 and 1 running Windows 7, and the result is the same every time.
If I download the update file on the phone, rename it to update.zip and then place the update.zip file in the root of the internal storage drive and choose update from file on the phone then the phone reboots to a spinning circle for a while before restarting normally.
I also tried rebooting the phone into recovery mode from the built-in update app and connected it to Mi PC Suite but that just updated it to V7.5.6.0 MBCCNDE which is another China ROM so its still of no use to me really.
Can anybody help with this? This process really shouldn't be so difficult and I am starting to consider sending this phone back. I have made an application with Xiaomi to have the bootloader unlocked but that can take over a week and tbh I don't really want an unlocked bootloader anyway because I have no interest in custom ROM's, root access or special recovery options.

I have seen many people with that problem and haven't seen any working solution yet...
I understand you don't want TWRP or unlocked bootloader but that's the only way you can get the job done and forget all these buggy Xiaomi tools.
Something else you can try... Google QFILwhich is the Qualcomm flash tool and does the same thing what MiFlash does. Search and read the guides how to unbrick Qualcomm devices with QFIL. All additional files needed like flasher, partitions.xml etc are in MIUI fastboot ROM already. Actually MiFlash is based on that tool I think...
Good luck.

Thanks but I'm a bit cautious about being the first person to try to use that QFIL flashing utility with this phone, especially since this phone stupidly doesn't include an integrated recovery system. I've found a generic tutorial for it but it looks pretty scary tbh.
http://www.androidbrick.com/ultimat...agons-are-unbrickable-qhsusb_dload_qpst_qfil/
Incidentally when I updated the phone using Mi PC Suite it killed the Google Play Services and I couldn't fix them so I did a normal factory restore and it has restored to a standard China ROM (MIUI 7.5 | Stable 7.5.6.0 (MBCCNDE) so clearly the vendor flashed some weird custom version to this before they sent it to me.
Honestly, this thing is starting to drive me insane.

You have to use these drivers for your Qualcomm port: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9oNcsjcOpNHZjI1OWtFSDFfS3c/view?usp=sharing
Delete the original Windows driver and install it again through device manager.

Thanks, I'll give it a try with that driver tomorrow. I did try another driver that I found on Google as well as the auto installed driver because it looked like a communication problem to me.
There's a driver pack on that Xiaomi tips website but I haven't been able to install it because the hosting used by that website is terrible and it just times out.

OK so I think I updated the driver using the one from your link but unfortunately the error is the same.
I uninstalled the device through DM and it self-installed this driver.

Then I used the Update driver > Browse > Let me pick > Have Disk option to force the driver from your link to install so the driver was updated to this:
The error in MiFlash is still exactly the same though: can not read from port COMxx.

OK the problem here seems to be that MiFlash cannot support standard recovery ROM's. It has to use those larger ones with the scripts etc included.
I was able to flash this with no problems whatsoever: http://en.miui.com/thread-324576-1-1.html
However I'm worried that might not be the official software and I want to keep this simple and official and get all updates OTA in future.
Unfortunately the only global full ROM available for this phone on the MIUI website is the Developer build.
http://en.miui.com/a-234.html
The version I have just flashed also doesn't include locales for the UK or Japan and I spend most of my time in those countries. I've set it to Singapore for now but I feel like I'm right back to square one with this thing.

From what I read official MIUI Global is missing many locales and that's why people are using xiaomi.eu ROM. I even suggested in there forum to stop calling it global b/c its not and call Asia or something...

The included country list on it is quite frankly bizarre. It includes some European countries but not others and has options for the Falkland Islands and St. Kitts but no option for Britain or the United States.

Yup no United States
When is the 64/128 global ROM coming out

8/16 if they get it right...

The problem is with no UK locale I don't know if I can get the IR Blaster working.
It's a small problem in the grand scheme of things but still one I would like to fix if I can.

@ Blood Rose - I am assuming so far you've kept the boot loader locked and flashed the global stable 7.5 version - on your 32 GB device? did you lose data - did you get any OTAs (security patches). I am looking to go to miui 8 - possibly chinese - the global development may not be as timely. Also I have the 64 gb version and there's not much going on the global ROM versions for that one.

I did flash a global stable version of 7.5. It's the latest official rom I believe. I did a full wipe to make sure all traces of the Chinese stuff were gone. Because its the latest official version ut hasn't received any OTA updates yet but it at least seems to connect to the official servers to check whereas the ROM the phone came with couldn't.
My bootloader is now unlocked because the MIUI forum staff offered to do immediately for me so I figured I might as well but I will not be using root or any custom builds.

Thanks

That depends on what you want to change it to. If it is a newer/alternative official ROM then that is easy. If it is to a custom ROM then you need an unlocked bootloader.

I neither know nor care about custom ROMs. I'm quite sure there is probably a way to circumvent Xiaomi's bootloader lock but I was just providing the standard textbook advice tbh.

Hi BloodRose,
Does the Xiaomi ROM support large file sizes, like an HD movie?
I am doing research on the Mi Max before buying.
I am based in the US, and it will not be my primary phone.
Thanks,

Bugs/Cons:
In stocklauncher with stock firmware you can not add widgets. But you can install another launcher, then it will work fine.
This is soon going to be fixed in a future update according to the manufacture.
No backlight in the touchbuttons.
Device will get a little hot around the camera area on the back, when running 3D games.
Camera could be better, but it is generally ok for the price!

Hi,
Great start of new topic/model, and nice links to possible fixes.
I just received my Elephone P2000 and after a few days I am still in doubt about it.
It is a lot of phone for little money, but looking at the specs I had my expectations set a bit higher.
Okay, maybe I am a bit prejudiced as I use this phone to replace my iPhone 5s
I ran into the same issue with adding Widgets, so I am glad there is a fix. Thanks for that !
The main problem I am still facing (and on bbs.elephone.hk I read that I am not the only one) is the Wifi connection. It keeps dropping at random. This makes the phone utterly useless for me since push mail, whatsapp, newsflash, etc are simply unreliable
I think the 720p screen is not as bad as some reviewers state. Even for a big 5.5" screen it is quite okay. Still in doubt if 5.5" is the right size for me
The camera however is a real disappointment, 13MP but grainy and unfocused.
Battery runs out quite fast. Even without WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS I managed to run out within 4 hours of fiddling around.
Although memory seems plenty, I ran out of memory quite rapidly when installing software, and found that adding a microSD card and using APP2SD solved my problem.
It took me a while to figure out how to place the 2 SIM cards (1 regular and one micro) and the microSD memory card, but once I managed to fit them this really works fantastic.
I hope Elephone will come up with more software updates since this could really be a nice phone for a nice price, and 5.5" is really in the demand at the moment.
Keep up the good work with adding updates and user experiences! Thanks !
Thanks for your feedback! I agree that the phone can not be compared to a iPhone 5. But also remember the huge price difference!
You also cant compare a Porsche with an Audi, both fine cars, but they are not the same class and cost different.
Regarding the WiFi, it is strange, because I have not experienced any problems with the WiFi on mine. It always works stable. But I agree that the camera could have been much better, its not super good. Just ok for fun pictures I would say.
Battery in standby mode is good for me, several days, but when I use it, only max 1 day. But try to disable GPS and Googles location service, it uses a lot of extra battery! And if it doesn't help, turn the brightness of the screen 10% down.

Hi,
I used VRoot 1.73 from vrootdownload.org and mgyun.com/en/GetVRoot since this was supposed to be in English. The newer 1.7.8 seems to be available only in Chinese, and my Chinese is quite limited
Installation is quite easy (start the setup on your Windows machine/virtual-machine and do not choose all the extra software and browser add-ons, start the VRoot program, hook up the phone to your system, press ROOT...and wait..phone reboots and windows software states 'rooted'). After installation I found 2 Icons with chinese text on the phone, 1 containing (chinese) advertisements and links to other software from the developer mgyun, and one supposedly something to do with the rooting/super-user proces (also most text and choices in chinese). The rooting proces is quite simple...and appears successful (apps requiring root access do start).
However, chinese pop-ups keep coming up when a proces requires root/superuser access and I have no clue what choices to make.
This made me decide to 'unroot' and remove the software. The chinese advertisement link remains on the phone, but this can easily be uninstalled.

I completely agree that this phone is in another league and cannot be compared to iPhone. The price is incredible for this phone, plus the huge 5,5" inch screen (bigger screens seem to be the current 'fashion'), dual sim, and the fantastic specs made me buy it. Without looking at the specs (octacore, memory, fingerprint, ips, etc) I would have been amazed...simply because of its price and neat design.
I have seemed to narrow the WiFi problem down to problems with DHCP. When I assign a fixed address the phone disconnects (according to wifi fixer) and reconnects, but when using dhcp things appear to go wrong. At home of course I can assign a fixed address, but at work and public places this is no option. There seem to be multiple users on the elephone forum that experience similar wifi problems, so I hope there will be a fix.
Interesting to see if there will be a stable and supported version of MIUI rom for the P2000, did you try the beta ?
Thanks!

Just flash this ROM with Spflashtool from needrom http://www.needrom.com/mobile/elephone-p2000-3/
After that you will have ROOT, not with vROOT but with normal SuperSU (not in Chinese). Also this ROM fixes the widgets and gives you wake gestures, so you can for example draw a C when the screen is off and it starts the Camera, or you just double tap to wake the screen.
I did not try the MIUI beta, because some features still don't work.
tnx

That ROM is clean, it is from Elephone and also the only ROM that fixes the widgets. Framaroot cant root this phone. If you want to root your old ROM manually you can only do it with the "read back method" and MTK droidtools plus Sp flash tool.
Read back root tutorial here by ITXtutor (but it is more complicated)

mhmm...ok i think that i try needrom's rom xD hahaahahaha
so..i read this in rom description:
I do NOT recommend to flash the "Preloader" so please untick that part in SP Flash Tools before you flash!
(You can flash it anyway without the Preloader, then it will just keep your original on the phone).
ALWAYS have a working backup of your original ROM before you flash a new unknown ROM.

Just untick the Preloader in Spflash tool after you loaded the scatter file and before you then flash, so you flash everything but the Preloader. Its safer to keep the original Preloader intact on the phone.

No, there is no problem that you don't flash the Preloader. The Preloader is the same, both ROMs are 4.4.2 Kitkat, only change is that the new ROM has fixed widgets and some extra features. Even IF there should be a problem, you could always flash the preloader afterwards again. But it is recommended never to flash the Preloader, better just leave the original on the phone. But if you want you can also just try to flash it, should be okay. But its not necessary.
On older devices, flashing the Preloader could brick them (in the told days) therefore it is not recommended. And you don't need to flash the Preloader when you flash new ROM, so why run the risk?

SuperSU can give problems with this ROM and some applications that can be resolved by replacing SuperSU by Superuser from ClockworkMod.
I had problems with Titanium Backup and those were solved by the change above.

Android or MIUI
Hi,
I followed your instructions and was able to flash the P2000. Thanks for the instructions and the link to the ROM
When starting I noticed that the icons look quite different from the default Android icons, they look much more like the MIUI icons. Is the ROM from your first post really a factory ROM provided by Elephone ??
The new ROM btw still has many of the original problems (WiFi and memory plus power management) but at least the widgets can be added and SuperUser works, so I am quite happy with it.
Thanks

Mate , the worst situation is that you mess up all the partitions which you can fix using the stock pit files ( for which I made a thread ... here ) ... so don't get frightened and try the recover and the ROM ( even in the recovery , you can't install the ROM because the model number differs ... ) also tell me about the nand structure and the CPU and also the Network support ... If everything is the same (esp the CPU and Nand Structure ) it's alright to give it a try but, if not , It's a waste of time to play this ... so , please provide a bit more detail ...

Yes, I can install TWRP and flash custom p601 roms (5.0.1) without a problem. When I flash a 5.1.1 custom rom, it did not. I beleive it is because of the new boot.img of 5.1.1 roms.

It'is identical to SM-P601 variant of note 10.1^2014, Just the RIL part is modified for not to support voice calls, It only use sim to connect network. When I flash p601 roms, I am able to make voice calls. I also make thread about it here. Partitioning is differs from p601 too. It's not the same but similar. One of my friends overwrite the pit with p601 stock roms and bricked the device before. I can boot with cm12 and cm13 roms for p601. But I want to use 5.1.1 stock or stock based roms.

Hi guys, thanks for your response
Yes, I can install TWRP and flash custom p601 roms (5.0.1) without a problem. When I flash a 5.1.1 custom rom, it did not. I beleive it is because of the new boot.img of 5.1.1 roms.

You know why ? ( no that's not " Because sky is high !!! " ) the reason is that you have the KK Bootloader which causes the problem ... as you know , first you need to flash a P601 firmware to get the new bootloader ( Extremely Important Note !!!! ... Do not even think of ( ) ticking the " Update bootloader " in the Odin which makes you blame your self later ... !!!! the lollipop boot loader is installed by it self ... just do nothing about it ...) try if it get's installed that way ... also take a look at this ... maybe you find it useful ( to convert the P602 to P601 !!! ) Note that I haven't tried it on Lollipop CM or some other ROMs so make a backup first !!! ... If you couldn't install the Odin way , there are other apps and if they failed , then find the Multi-file version of P600 / P601 Lollipop ROM to flash the bootloader part directly ... Good luck :good:
hey dude have you ever found something about 5.1.1 bootloader for p602? I need that
I have restored my device which is a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 edition 2014 by using the settings>restore method. However, the screen is not going on, staying constant as i showed with photo below. I have opened the case of tablet, i have extracted the battery, and connected it again. No way, it does not continue, stays as constant like the photo. Is there anyone who can provide a solution?

@agesilaus have tried flashing original Samsung firmware with Odin?
Hello All, much worse happened to me: after 8 years of resistance I figured 4.2 is way too old so went for the stock update on the device. It was downloading for too long, stopped 3 times during the process. I guess it is when it got damaged as the above nice samsung logo got stuck after reboot. When I tried to boot to recovery it does the flashing again (definition of insane - doing the same expect different result) and that's all hangs in the air again. (Exactly as it is shown above on the picture - waited until the tabled discharged.)
I could boot to download but the latest odin doesn't like the stock image (hoping it is that, if anyone has a safe copy a share would be appreciated).
One more info the machine is badly overheating, ADB connects, but says device is not authorised and I can't remember if I had any PC enabled for the device would be still alive...
Many thanks for any hints.
@xantbubus for that old firmware I'd take Odin 3.09.
Using the multiple file firmware is safer.
You don't say which device exactly.
Which region?

Hello, thank you so much, apologies, it is sm-p602, the region is Turkey (althugh I live in Hungary but it was bought there).
Do you have a link for split firmware? They say even sm-p601 is working perfectly only the restriction on the call is lifted...
@xantbubus if sammobile, samfrew or others don't let you have them, use SamFirm_Reborn_0.3.6.3 which will definitely give you multiple files (if settings are correct ).

Thanks, google was not really my friend on this. Btw, I resolved the issue. Unfortunately I needed to clean the data partition but after that it worked. I guess the 3.09 odin also played part as earlier it was trying to reflash instead of going to recovery so thank you all!

Commonly asked Mi Max questions with answers (UPDATED 19/03/2017)

Hey guys, just switched to this phone, and since it's so new to the market, very few resources are available to explain some common problems. I'll try and answer some of those.
How do you unlock the bootloader on the Mi Max?
- apply for bootloader unlock permission on http://en.miui.com/unlock/, wait for a couple of days, download the app. Once you get the permission, then it gets a bit tricky. To unlock the bootloader you need the Chinese Developer ROM . This isn't mentioned ANYWHERE along the official site. It's frustrating. Follow the steps in this guide - http://en.miui.com/thread-307139-1-1.html, but use the fastboot ROM of Chinese Developer ROM instead of the global stable ROM. Once you have Chinese Developer ROM running, make sure you turn on Find My Phone via Mi App. This is important otherwise you will get 'Could not verify' message. Once the find my phone thing is running, it's easy to unlock the bootloader. Just follow the official guide via the app.
How do I root Mi Max?
Once the phone has been unlocked, use fastboot to flash TWRP. How? See here - http://en.miui.com/thread-293031-1-1.html. Once you have TWRP running, download and flash SuperSU, and you're all good.
My Mi Remote app will only show Chinese remotes and not my country's local remotes. Why?
Switch over the locale to your local country in settings > additional settings, and restart the app. All done.
Which screen protector is best for my Mi Max?
Actually, buyer beware - NONE of the tempered glasses work well on the Mi Max. They don't cover the whole screen. The Mi Max has a curved 2.5D screen, so the right and left edges don't get covered by the tempered glass. Looks pretty ugly to be honest. I've ordered a Chinese TPU screen guard from aliexpress that claims to cover the whole screen. I'll update this guide when I get it.
Does the Mi Max have double tap to wake?
Yes it does! But it is turned off by default. Go to settings>display to turn it on.
What other hardware problems are there with the Mi Max?
The charger port is made from aluminum. It is very soft, so just by using it a couple of times, you'll end up getting ridges along the bottom side, where the micro USB cable goes. It's a problem with all recent Xiaomi phones, and you can't do anything about it. See this pic for details - http://i.imgur.com/z7ckOuB.jpg. I've tried to highlight the 2 tracks made by the micro USB cable along the charger port.
Also, the body is easily scratched at the chamfered aluminum edges, so make sure you handle it with care. The metal is just too soft. It is makes the Mi Max very slippery.
How is the speaker on the Mi Max?
Coming from a Oneplus One, the single bottom firing speaker (yes, single. The other is a dummy) was a huge disappointment. It barely gets the job done, and it's one area where I personally feel Xiaomi shouldn't have cut corners.
How is the Snapdragon 650 processor on the Mi Max? Does it lag or stutter?
Let me put all fears to rest - this is the smoothest phone I've ever used, period. I've used a lot of them, but this phone is by far the smoothest. No lags, stutters, out of memory problems, app redraws, nothing. Everything just works.
How long does it take to charge the Mi Max?
From zero to 100%, with a quick charge charger, it'll take around 2 hours. On the standard charger, around 3 hours. But let me tell you - you'll end up forgetting your charger. The phone is a true beast in the battery department. I easily get 2.5 days worth of battery with around 9 hrs screen on time with a single charge. It's unbelievable.
UPDATE -
I was just tinkering around with Mi MAX and trying out LOS14.1, and ran into 2 problems -
My PC stopped recognizing my Xiaomi Mi Max phone all of a sudden. The USB won't work and the phone is not recognized. What should I do?
Assuming your USB cable and phone USB port are working, you can do the following -
(1) Go to C:\Windows\INF
(2) Type “wpdmtp.inf” in search bar provided to the right of the address bar in Windows 10.
(3) Once you have found it, just right click on it and select install. It will take a few seconds.
(4) Connect your device to the pc.
Done.
How do I get past the TWRP screen that asks for a password to decrypt my phone after clean flashing MIUI via EDL mode?
So here's a strange bug I found - if you clean flash MIUI via EDL/MiFlash tool, then flash TWRP and boot into it, it will ask for a password to decrypt. Now, my limited research tells me noone knows the password. So, what now?
1. BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA including songs, pics, contacts AND TRANSFER THEM TO A PC/DRIVE/CLOUD. THIS is very important! What we'll do will format your internal memory completely.
2. skip the password screen
3. go to wipe
4. select the right hand button that says wipe data
5. reboot to recovery again
6. you'll note that if you try to boot into MIUI, you will not be able to do so. This is because you now have an unencrypted data folder but the stock kernel cannot read that. The solution? You need to flash SuperSU on it. But we just formatted our internal memory, how do we get the SuperSU zip? 3 ways to get past this -
a) use an external memory card. Load SuperSU zip on it, and flash the zip, and it'll boot up
b) use USB OTG drive, load it with SuperSU zip, go to mounts in TWRP, mount USB OTG, and flash it from there
c) if you don't have either of these, use adb sideload in TWRP. Go to advanced, adb sideload on TWRP. Download and rename SuperSU to supersu.zip, copy it to your adb folder on windows. Then open command propmt in your adb folder, type 'adb devices' without the quotes to start adb. Then, type 'adb sideload supersu.zip' without the quotes. ADB will flash supersu now, and the phone will boot.
That's it.
Let me know if you have more doubts!
This is a really useful post, thanks.

I have the same problem, the top and the bottom part of the phone is made from plastic. Xiaomi should have put a USB Type-C port instead of micro USB.

What do you do if your country isn't on the list? I have flashed a global ROM but it's missing most of the major countries on the locale list (e.g. the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Japan etc).

The global ROM has US as one of the locales. To be honest though, it really doesn't matter which one you pick. Before Xiaomi had US as one of the locales, I just set it has Hong Kong. Now that I'm using US, I see no difference.

So, I got the replacement unit, and guess what - it has the same hardware 'problem'. I am not sure it really is a problem as much as it is a side effect of using aluminium - the charger port gets chaffed very easily on repeated use. Anyway. The phone is awesome! Best decision ever made to buy this phone. Now, just waiting for the kernel source for Mi Max so CM 13 can come on this beast!
One small but annoying problem is when I use Gmail on the mi max, when I click on an embedded link in a mail, the browser is not on top but behind, so I have to find it using notification. Anyone else have this problem?
My 128 GB MI Max ordered on mi.com India should get delivered in a day or 2. So, how do it root it ? Would it be with MIUI 7 ? Do i upgrade to MIUI 8 before rooting?
Totally new to Xiaomi . Have been a Samsung Note user, but trying Max ( love the size ) after the Note 7 debacle. Could somebody explain in detail as to what i need to do ? read somewhere that India Mi Max is with Global ROM and it cannot be rooted.
I've followed the guide to install twrp and have flashed rr. Any way to modify the lights on the navigation buttons at the bottom? (The fixed buttons.) I'm using nova launcher.
Cheers.

No need to upgrade before rooting. It is likely to be miui 7. Follow the exact guide that is in the OP and it will work. However, get the correct TWRP (yours is model Helium).

I NEED Redmi Note 8 Pro firmware v11.0.7.0 PGGMIXM Can Anyone Help?

My Phone is UK version 6gb 128GB
MIUI version: MIUI Global | Stable 11.0.7.0 (PGGMIXM)
Android Version: 9 PPR1.180610.011
Security Patch: 2020-04-01
Did anyone get a backup of the above Android 9 firmware version before the upgrade to 10 came out.
The above version supports the new front camera shipped on newer devices.
If anyone was smart enough to make a backup please upload it some place. :fingers-crossed:
I was dumb on this occasion & never got a backup.

Thanks for the offer but it has to be the v11.0.7.0. Sadly.
I have the v11.0.6.0 but as explained the front camera is not supported on newer built hardware using this firmware version. Basically mi changed the front camera and maybe other hardware on these devices. They unified the kernels in the latest 10 update but 9 is still fragmented.

The v11.0.7.0. is an OTA recovery update, did you try to get it through updates?
No OTA's for me except the latest Android 10 update. This 11.0.7 firmware is not available any place and I have searched every official source. Since mi didn't do an official release of this firmware for the begonia I think it's the on device shipped firmware so someone would of needed to make a backup. I never gave it a second thought thinking everything would be Equal but it seems not. :crying:
OK then maybe @bigrammy could try the next update to see what happens, no need to update but only to download the package and share it here.
I also searched and nothing.
Maybe you could try with this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-mix-2/how-to/guide-reverse-engineering-xiaomi-ota-t3691612 I used to use similar method to catch some early updates on Samsung devices although is pretty probable that Xiaomi dropped this release for some reason.

Thanks but the only OTA I ever get is Android 10 even if I flash the the 11.0.6 firmware. I am well used to all this stuff rolling back and forth and capturing updates etc etc on many devices like Sonys, Nokia, etc but sadly nothing arrived for this v11.0.7.
I guess I will need to wait till someone does a backup of the shipped Android 9 firmware of these newer devices. :fingers-crossed:

Indeed. I didn't expect that Xiaomi changed front camera sensor. MIUI has terrible RAM management, so custom ROM is the only reasonable option.
To be honest I don't have TWRP backup, but I thought of buying a second N8 Pro, unlock it, take a TWRP backup and then return it to shop (with relocked bootloader of course).
If it helps the devs - why not?

OK I see. Well I wouldn't worry about it too much because without the camera driver kernel source there is not much can be done really.
The main reason for wanting the Android 9 stock ROM is I had hoped to try some experimentation using the Stock "kernel" which is fully compatible with the Engineering lk and preloader (Can Use SPFlashTool) .
I would not risk buying another one of these phones again until the official source code is updated with the New front camera driver until then we're kind of stuck.
I keep a close eye on any updates for this device and or any other Xiaomi MTK devices that could use this camera in the future.

They are used in Redmi K30 Ultra which is MTK SoC also so merging the selfie camera drivers into the (begonia) RN8P should be doable.
I am not 100% sure if they would be compatible or if they still rely on (need) the base S5K3T2_MIPI_RAW driver.
Comms with the main dev's is pretty poor and it seems like a bit of a closed club so I can't really ask any meaningful questions. I can only suggest and point and hope they pick it up and use it if it's workable.
I raised an issue on github some time ago but never got any reply just a bunch of commits that seemed unrelated to the camera. https://github.com/AgentFabulous/begonia/issues/1
We could do with a commited XDA kernel dev who is happy to use this forum platform rather than "social media like telegram, twitter, facebook sort of nonsense" which is not my idea of sharing and Learning.
Following anything on those platforms is near impossible for me as everything is a bunch of fragmented one liners
Maybe it's a age thing IDK (It means I Dont Know seemingly )

I recieved new Note 8 Pro and - guess what - production date is July 2020.

Yes that's the EU firmware for the Newer Camera like mine. If you could make a backup that would cool
I have it. how to backup the rom?
@kinder_surprise
First - you have to unlock bootloader and then install non CFW TWRP Recovery

As @wojownikhaha as said the first step is to unlock the bootloader following the official way which is a long drawn out process sadly.
Once you have unlocked the bootloader you need to flash the engineering preloader and LK from here https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide-info-psa-redmi-note-8-pro-megathread-cfw.4056527/
Personally I would then just use SPFlashTool to do a "Read Back" of the device as I am not 100% sure if TWRP would boot without a modified boot.img installed which would require overwriting OUR stock boot.img with a boot.img from the other devices without these newer cameras if that makes sense
Put simply we need a copy of our device boot.img.
If TWRP is allowed to boot without any mods to the boot.img then fine simply make a TWRP backup.
Otherwise SPFlashTool is needed to do a backup of our stock partitions.
Let me know what level your at with all this stuff so we can better guide you if required.
Thanks bigrammy

I confirm - this is possible. I was able to boot to recovery just after installation (on first Note with 11.0.7.0)
Anyway, I will provide full TWRP backup of stock 11.0.5.0 on next Thursday.

Hi Thanks for the confirmation that it is possible to boot TWRP without the need to flash a modified boot.img first.
Looking forward to the EU 11.0.5.0 firmware

Question Unable To Update ROM, Stuck On V12.0.11.0.RJTCNXM ("Global")

Background Info -
I purchased my 16GB x 512GB Mi MIX Fold from a reputable supplier on Alibaba. It was claimed that he was capable of making it have a "Global" ROM (a 5 - 7 day process is how long it took him). All Google services and apps were preloaded, just like my first Xiaomi Global phone I purchased 1.5 years ago. As well as only some of the Xiaomi Global apps. Now that I have the phone, I am running into a fair bit of issues (in this post I am only focusing on one). I did bring these all up to the supplier (of course including updating the ROM issues), all without much help. All he gave me was he said the ROM on my phone is actually the EEA version that was modified, and of I need any updates, go on www.xiaomi.eu. So not much help, because come to find out, they don't support the Mi MIX Fold and that there is no ROMs available. Including the current ROM my phone has right now - V12.0.11.0.RJTCNXM ("Global").
What is nice about my phone is that all the system apps are the Global versions. But what's not so great is the System Apps Updater does not work at all. It shows there are update(s) available for my Global apps, but when I update them, they are indefinitely suck at "Connecting 0%". I also tried Xiaomi's "Get Apps" while switching my Region to "India", it too showed updates, and would not update them no matter what I tried. So, I search online for each individual system app, and update each manually (yes, the whole process is a pain).
So Where I Need Some Help (The Purpose Of This Post...Updating the ROM) -
So, I am in the process of trying to update my phone's ROM, to get the best MIUI has to offer for the Mi MIX Fold. I have searched all over the internet and the only ROMs I can find are "China" versions.
My current ROM version is V12.0.11.0.RJTCNXM ("Global"). I know the most up to date ROM is V12.0.21.0.RJTCNXM (but it's the "China" version). I would like to have the current ROM, but I have a strong feeling that I will loose all functionality of all my Global system apps. The Xiaomi Updater app unfortunately does not work at all. When checking for an update, it says "No updates available". When tapping "Download latest package", it says "Can't download update...Wait a minute or two and try again". When I tap "What's new", it says "You don't have permission to access the update log...". Please see screenshots for all of this. I even tried to update it another traditional Xiaomi way by using Mi PC Suite, which it couldn't even detect my phone when connected. So that doesn't work either.
So my attempts are as follows (at least 20 attempts). I downloaded every Stable Recovery ROM version as listed in the XDA Mi MIX forum titles "MIUI Updates Tracker (Mi MIX Fold)" I also downloaded every ROM version from a couple other sources. I tried to update the ROM (from the newest version to the oldest) using the Xiaomi Updater app through Recovery Mode. Every time it failed saying "Current version is invalid. You can only flash the latest stable ROM", or "Can't verify update...Can't install official ROM". So then I downloaded the ROMs directly from mirror links to Xiaomi's server. I did the same update procedure, they all failed. Does that mean I have to do it via Fastboot?
Last Thoughts -
I included some screenshots showing what the ROM is on my phone (and the outdated Android security update), and what message comes up with each update attempt.
Could you guys point me in the right direction and help me figure out how I can update my Mi MIX Fold to the most current ROM, preferably the EEA version (if possible), since there really is no such thing as a Global version? I would be extremely appreciative if someone can shed some light!
Hi my suggestions is to backup your data firstly from there download the latest fastboot stable of the rom. From there before anything make sure oem unlocked is there inside your phone if not you need to wait 167 hours to fastboot flash the rom. Guides of unlocking is online you can search for that. After that, download the miflash.exe file, that can also be found online and from there flash it with it to the latest Rom . Hope that helps. If you are still unsure , you can always search online of "Flashing with fastboot xiaomi Rom"

Thank you very much for your response!
OK, so it looks like I will have no choice but to get rid of the custom "Global" ROM for the China version. I do wonder though if I am going to lose out on anything as far as the Global system apps (but won't update, unless manually), or all the Google apps & services, or anything else. There of course are many benefits switching to the China ROM.
I'm just a little reluctant because of it being a China ROM being used on a phone in the US. And having features that only work in China and is not optimized for the Global market. As well as features usually found on a Global Xiaomi phone, would be missing or can't work at all. Maybe I am overthinking it all. Another concern is if the China ROM would have English as a language that can be choses. I assume so, but it would be a plus to know 100% before I make the plunge.
Only if I could play around with a Mi MIX Fold with a fresh install of the China ROM. See how different it really is compared to what I currently have. See what it comes with (apps & all) & what is or isn't compatible. My previous, & only Xiaomi phone, was the Global version of the Mi Note 10 Pro. So I have, I guess you can call it, a Xiaomi Global mindset. My Mi MIX Fold is my daily driver, I can't play too much around. Also if I do flash it with China ROM, I can't revert it back to the ROM it has now, since it seems to be custom. Unless I can somehow backup absolute everything, ROM and all.
I know this is a simple question, but what and how is the very best method to back everything up? To not only make sure no data is lost, but also to make the whole process faster when restoring everything.
Do you have any other suggestions or advice? I would appreciate it!
The custom global rom is not official and you will never get update.
I recommend you to mi flash the chines rom, but you will lose everything.
Google will be available the chines ROM.
bom Dia, como consigo essa rom global?

Hey Anas,
Since you tried both Roms, which one would you recommend?
For UAE, does VoLTE work?
