LED disabled on 7.0 Nougat? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In Marshmallow we had the enable LED option under Settings -> Screen, on Nougat this option is not there anymore, Light Flow with Normal/Direct/ROOT mode doesn't work too..
Does anyone knows an easy way tô enable the LED?
Since Marshmallow I've been enabling Miracast with a simple line on build.prop, hopefully there is another for enabling the LED.
Thanks.

Thanks! I haven't seem that menu..

The only bug on N that I am experiencing is that some apps seem to no longer trigger the notification light. Chrome does, for example, but Touchdown does not.

is sound for charging and led for charging is working in the Android N

I noticed this on one of my apps when I set the phone down for a few hours like overnight, no light and no sound. I woke up this AM and seen no notification light and then as soon as i pressed the power button to wake up the screen the notification sound played. defiantly a bug, not sure if its with one specific app or across the board. I have yet to get a late night call, as far as I know.

It should not matter if it was charging or not, I'm trying to understand where you are going with this?
The app functions perfectly until the phone is left alone for several hours then it will never notify, no light, no sound, nothing until I hit the power button., then the sound played no light obviously.
I am tempted to start a thread on this shortly, but I need to see if other apps behave the same way.

I know there is that option, however I did not have to preform this in 6.0.1 for any app, so that's why I am wondering whats up and if that will make a difference or not. I do know that apps with GCS can automatically bypass this from what I read, but that has to be written into the app. I will continue to experiment with seeing what apps do it or do not do it without messing around with turning off optimization for any app like with 6.0.1 . Either this version of doze is overly aggressive or its a bug

Well, in any case its too early to tell what it is, at least for my level of understanding the android OS as well as some others on here.
I guess I will just sit tight n wait and see what others are saying about notifications

From my understanding/experience, Doze is significantly more aggressive now than it was in 6. Which is great for battery life, but annoying when you're watching TV and expecting an email or some such.
The charging comment in my other post was due to the understanding that doze is disabled while charging; if you charge over night everything should come in normally, but if you just leave the phone down then it will not.

I thought that might be what you might be getting at .
If doze is more aggressive, i think it is overly aggressive to the point where sometime within an hour of setting your phone down it will only alert for calls/text messages, nothing else, then if the text come in early enough in the light the notification light will completely stop by the time you wake up. I am just not too happy about how overly aggressive this is as like you stated expecting someone to contact you in some way you are SOL. I don't think one should have to go through every single app to set it manually, that is pointless IMO
I have re flashed my system partition since the factory images came out a few hours ago so maybe(not) that could help but I am not optimistic.
Thanks for clearing that up

Doze does not completely kill the services. It just adds more and more delay to its syncing, so even if doze is working aggressively, the notifications should be delayed (like by some seconds or minutes), not completely disabled. The case you are stating doesn't seems normal. I don't know if the apps need to be updated.

So, at least in my case, I solved this issue with the notification light. I went into Settings --> System UI Tuner --> Other --> Power Notification Controls --> and turned them on. Then, Settings --> Notifications --> Touchdown (the app that was giving me problems) --> and changed the notification level from Auto to Level 4 (one down from the top).
Since then, the notification light works as expected.

[APP] LED Me Know - app for LED notification !

Found out about this from the G2 forum
"LED Me Know" is a great app (available from the market) which you can use to make the LED blink for notification ! You can select if you want it to blink for new SMS, gmail, missed calls, etc. Also there's an option to make the trackpad light blink, though I've not tried that myself. Works great on my DZ with stock ROM

had it for 1 day, and deleted, cuz when i receive sms or email while i sleep, the blink will either wake me up, or it will drain out the battery by the time i wake up (after it blinked for so many hours....)

ok, so why not put the phone face down, or in its case or something if you don't want to see the LED flashing ? Another alternative is to turn off the service when you want to go to sleep (just go into the app and select the option to turn it off).
And did you find it to really drain the battery overnight ?
Maybe it's not for you though.
Unfortunately I also had a problem with this app draining the battery. I installed it on my stock T-Mobile G2 and experienced less than a third of my typical battery life today while using it. Not sure if the app itself is causing this or the flashing LED is drawing that much current. I uninstalled it for now.

Brightness gets automatically set and cannot be changed when battery is low

Right now if the battery level is below certain point, the brightness setting and stand-by time setting get automatically set by the system, and cannot be changed.
I don't know what app or what part of the system is doing this for me automatically. I unchecked "power saving mode" and still.
This is very frustrating. I understand the phone may THINK it's helping me save battery but in fact the brightness I want and I usually set is even LOWER than the auto value the phone sets for me. And besides, I don't like the idea that MY phone is being controlled by someone/something else and I don't have an option to disable that something.
Someone please shed some light?
Edit:
Note that this is NOT the "power saving mode". I disabled "power saving mode" and still this problem.

I don't know the number right now. I'll keep an eye on phone as the battery drops and let you guys know the exact threshold that triggers this.
If it's some system app that's doing this, I have no problem freezing it using Titanium Backup just like how I freezed "Tethering Manager" to enable wifi hotspot and I freezed "My Account" so that 3G doesn't come on when wifi is connected.
Just don't know which app it is...
have you flash other roms to see if it go away? i think jug 2.0 take away this problem
And the even more ridiculous thing about it is that it auto sets the stand-by time to 30 seconds, and after I charge the battery to above the threshold it doesn't change the stand-by time back to where you set it! You have to change it back yourself.
Did you try a master reset and see if that fixed it?
No guys its like builtin in alot of roms with out apps... Its the system

For me there is a "power savings mode" right in the settings menu that does what you describe. Granted I'm not on stock ROM, but I think it was there with the Telus ROM too.

This isnt power saving mode causing this. Power saving mode is turned off and this still happens to me once my battery hits like 10%. This is built into the rom somewhere and the vibrant had the same thing. One of the devs for the vibrant was able to disable this setting in their rom so maybe the devs can do the same here. Again this is not power saving mode which can be set at certain levels that you would like.

Yeah once it reach 5%, the autobrightness become very bright and doesn't change..I have tested it on all ROM..and it's not the powersaving..I think it drain the battery really fast to help mentation the health of the battery..just guessing though..and stock ROM is more sensitive than jnault ROM..

You guys are right. It's not the power saving mode. This happens even when I turn OFF my power saving mode. It's something else in the system that's doing this, and yes, the auto brightness the system sets is even brighter than what I previously set myself. So, what a useful feature!
mine does the right thing, opposite of what your phones are doing. im guessing at about 5% battery life, the display sets itself pretty close to the lowest (if not the lowest) brightness setting, even with my power saving mode option unchecked. i wonder if the auto adjust screen power has something to do with it, since i got that checked all the time. but maybe not. im running on beastmod 1.0 rom.

Light Flow battery drain?

I tried using the app called Light Flow in order to control the LED notification colours, seems to have been draining the battery..anyone else experience this?
Yeah I've noticed something causing my cpu to 'wake' more than it should when it should be idle. I've been thinking it might Light Flow, think I'll uninstall it tonight and see how much I lose overnight.
Don't know whether it's been the updates it has been getting or if it's done it all the time, but I know my battery certainly didn't drain this quickly before when idle.

yeah same thing happens to me, in the battery stats Android OS is the main contributor to drain and the CPU Awake time is always pretty high
interesting I havent suffered much noticeable effect on the battery. I juhst crashes every time i reboot the phone.
I disabled it earlier because I was having problems with it flashing after the notification was gone. Didn't notice any extra strain on battery though, although it could have been there.
At the moment it's 1 day 16 min on battery, with 20% Android OS and 5h 38m awake CPU time, is that high? (the Android OS bit/awake time)
Not noticing any drain with Lightflow... I notice that when an email/text comes in the phone wakes up briefly but whether that's Lightflow or normal I don't know... but the phone is asleep from then until I turn it on, even though the LED is flashing away merrily in the meantime. And I looked at this overnight - so getting an alert at maybe 2 or 3am and then actually checking it at 8am or so. Nothing abnormal between 2am and 8am, and noticed no extra battery drain.

Had this problem but I think I understand how it works now.
It will keep flashing if you have "individually" removed the notifications out of the notifications bar. Removing notifications this way doesn't seem to register in Light Flow but you can solve this by:
(a) running that app
(b) hit the "X" button to clear all notifications in the notifications bar.
Can anyone find a way to see if it really is Light Flow that consumes that much battery? I cannot really tell.
Hi.
Light flow will cause some battery drain, but I try to keep it as little as possible.
You will see a fair amount of time partially awake (not the screen on, but showing as awake in the battery usage) because of the app as every time you have more than one outstanding notification (of different colors) the app has to do a partial phone wake to run the alarm manager that changes the color.
There's a few things that can help this, firstly slowing down the frequency of cycling colors ("Notification - battery", in general settings).
Fast = 2.5 seconds
Medium = 5 seconds
Slow = 10 seconds
Very slow = 20 seconds
The other option is just to show the highest priority notification that's currently outstanding - then you'll just get 1 color (e.g. if you have an e-mail, missed call and sms message all outstanding - if you have priority of 1 set on missed call then only that will display of the 3)
Unless you really need them, all the additional light controls in the general settings menu e.g. button backlight, flash etc should be disabled to keep things minimal.
With the latest 2.7.x releases I found (on a nexus one) that the partial wake is for less than 100th of a second on every cycle change (previous version had got to about 400ths of a second)
As for not clearing the notification, at the moment I've got no hooks into swiping away individual notifications from the notification bar so they will keep flashing.
I'm thinking of adding an extra battery saving option where just the most recent notification type is shown as there wouldn't be the need for partial wakes for that.
The good news is I just got a Galaxy Nexus yesterday and after quite some time got the adb drivers working so I'll be looking into seeing what's possible with ICS soon.
So far I've just made one ICS specific change for the next release which is to remove the nag screen on upgrading about restarting accessibility as it seems google have finally sorted out the accessibility bug that caused the need for a restart!
Cheers for the clarification and help, andrewpmoore. Great app.
The option that makes the LED shows only the most recent notifications will be VERY WELCOME! Look forward to the update
Good Job, glad you finally have the handset! can't wait for the next release!
No issues here. I think it really depends on your settings those. Especially the color cycles.

Don't get too excited about the next release. It'll just be a bug fixes one (and the nag removal for ICS)
If there are any devs on here that can work out a way to pick up on the swipe to remove notifications could they get in touch. I've not found anything useful in the accessibility service so far.
Probably didn't see my question in another thread, but can you add a full RGB colour picker? Seeing as it's an RGB LED I assume this is possible, rather than just having the current, fixed, selection of named colours?
Great job andrewpmoore, will definitely use this as soon as my GN arrives
Don't need to worry about battery drain from Light Flow any more andrewpmoore.
I first tried disabling the app then uninstalling, I still had the same battery drain from Android OS, so my problem lies elsewhere.
I've reinstalled Light Flow now, great app!

It's something I've had on my todo list for a while. It'd be relativley simple for phones line the Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus, the difficult part is fitting it in with the "direct mode" settings and mapping colors between them.
I'll see what I can do.

Considering other people are getting the sleep of death without Lightflow it seems a little rash to decide that Lightflow is causing it.

Add to that the cases where people are using Lightflow and NEVER had the Sleep of Death, it's fair to say Lightflow is not the (sole) cause. It MAY be behaving badly with some other app I guess... but I've been running it since day 2 (18th) and never had the sleepy death thing.

Battery life tips/tweaks to stop battery drain

When I first got the Note 5 last week, I noticed the battery life wasn't so great. After making some tweaks I've noticed that 1) Android system isn't the number one thing eating up my battery 2) Cell standby isn't consuming more battery than my screen anymore and 3) Screen is the number one thing consuming battery and I'm getting fantastic screen on time. The first attached pic shows stats from my phone being off the charger for almost 8 hours and I was connected to my wireless earbuds via bluetooth and streaming pandora for almost 4 hours while traveling to and from the gym and during my workout (all over the network, no wifi but when I'm home or in the office, I'm always on wifi) plus I had about 1 1/2 hours of SOT. The Second pic is day 2 with 1 day and 2 hours of use with 37% still left and 3 hours of SOT. Also, I have Google Now running, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter constantly running and I maybe lose 1% battery life every hour or longer when I'm not using the phone.. I'd like to thank @rlsroufe for his debloat list because that was a big starting point.. Here's what I did:
-Disable AT&T/Samsung Bloat (Package Disabler Pro)
-Disable S Finder (Package Disabler Pro)
-Turn off motion Gestures
-Turn off S voice
-Turn off or decrease vibrations
-Turn off Google Location History (Huge battery drain, causes play service and/or Android system to go nuts)
-Turn off Android Device manager (Lock Screen and Security —> Device Admin)(Also causes play service drain)
-Disable Unnecessary Sync Service
-If you use Adguard, turn it off when you don't actually need it and just flip the switch when you do
-Turn off S pen Alerts, pen detection, and S pen sound and vibration (will still work exactly the same)
-Turn off Enhance4GLTE (basically voice over LTE, makes cell standby consume a lot of battery)
-Turn off 'Always allow scanning' under advanced wifi settings (Allows apps to serach for Wifi even when wifi is off)
Reboot and enjoy..

I think it was sarcasm.
I had posted this in another thread, but using package disabler to disable "s-finder" seemed to have made a large difference in battery for me. I (personally) usually keep location services and android device manager active, however.
One thing common with many android phones is that for the first couple of days after you first get the phone (or factory reset it), location services tends to draw more power when compared to after you've had it a while. I have nothing to confirm this (and I've been too lazy to try and verify it), but I suspect that location services keeps a cache of cell phone tower locations... so the drain would be higher while its still building up that cache.
Yeah I feel like disabling S finder helped as well.. I consider that samsung bloat as well but I'll add that to the list, thanks. I keep location service on as well but I turn off location history which is what I think was causing stuff to go nuts and def noticed a difference right away. Device manager I don't really use because I noticed if you factory reset your phone via the phone recovery, you still have to sign into your google account before you can do anything with it so that's nice.
Yeah that sounds like a logical theory and could very well be what was draining battery. But literally 2 hours after turning off Enhance4gLTE, cell standby dropped and noticed battery life was a lot better. There's been a few threads on that as well as VoLTE (tmo equivalent) that suggest that's the issue for drain as well.

Can you share your disabled list in Package Disabler Pro please?
Got this via @rlsroufe and @mcdavid
FYI - There's an Extreme (left column) and Basic (right column), I just went with the Basic one. Green Means I left it alone, Orange means I disabled it and Yellow means you can but don't have to. This is for the Tmo variant so some things wont be on this list so I just went one by one and did it just by typing in the last word of the application. Anything that I actually used I left alone but you can mix and match if you want and see what works best for you.

Okay.. So Samsung made this SUPER ambiguous.. But the "Disable Pen Detection" setting.. Are you saying that that toggle needs to be ON or OFF? What does the setting do anyways? I can't understand Samsung's wording in the settings..
Lol yeah, there was a big discussion in anther thread about that. Putting it in the 'Off' position turns it off which is what you want.. I believe it just turns off the feature when you walk away from your s pen and it warns you.. I could be wrong tho but since doing it, nothing has changed with the S pen and it all works the same exact way when I pull the s pen out

Haha, I think there's a setting for what you described (other than pen detection) but have you noticed the battery life is better when that setting is turned off? Or is it not noticeable?
I'm not 100% sure because I did everything pretty much at once. It does say it might help save battery so that was enough for me. Everything has been working great so far tho, finished charging my phone around 12 today, left it for 2 1/2 hours and didn't lose a percent even tho FB, Email, App update and Text messages were coming in so I think it's a combination of everything

Actually leaving it in on position turns off pen detection which saves battery. I am rooted, checked with SQL editor.

So what is the verdict? Off or on?
LOL says in my settings for this "turning off pen detection when the pen is attached can extend battery life".
So i turned mine OFF
My secret is leaving it charging all day, all night, all day etc. That's the only way.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using XDA Free mobile app
Based on rlsroufe's SQL dump, the option should be ON which disables pen detection.
When you pull the pen out and the phone no longer 'sees' it, it uses the motion detector to see if you are walking away. If you go like 12 steps you get an alert.
Turning this option ON, disables this detection when the pen is attached to the phone.
Hey @oka1 can you please close this thread or disable the comments. I will no longer be supporting it because I no longer have this phone. Thank you

Does 360 Hibernation Master app work on Marshmallow for Z5??

Does anyone know if this app works on the Z5 using Marshmallow?? Please confirm.

Nope, haven't tried,
also didn't know it yet (it appears relatively new)
looks it's offering something similar like Greenify's Shallow Hibernation + Disabling of sync (connection switches) + maximum CPU frequency while screen is off,
looks great from first impression.
I guess it also enforces aggressive Doze ?

zach & kbab,
No no, it's a GREAT app! Read below. I just want to know if anyone's tried it on Marshmallow + Z5 yet. I want to get Xperia X Performance this summer so want to know if it works with Marshmallow or not. I have the S7 and it doesn't work on it, but did on my Z3 which ran on Lollipop.
The ONLY issue I had with my former Z3 was the Stamina Mode on it was great but buggy, and would cause the battery power to "free fall" once in a great while, then I'd have to factory reset. It also was messing with my incoming & outgoing MMS (group and/or photo) text messages. But once I factory reset my Z3 and just kept it off, ALL was fine and perfect. I also found an app that does what Stamina Mode does BUT BETTER, and it only costs $1.95 (free version is good but you want the full pay version, which is done in-app). It's called 360 Hibernation Master. It doesn't work on my S7, but it DID work very well on my Z3, so I assume it also will on the Xperia X Performance. I would leave my phone uncharged and on overnight, and the next morning, it'd still be at the SAME percentage (6-7 hours later)!! A must-have app if you own an Xperia!
Just don't EVER turn on Stamina Mode! I mean, unless someone on here verifies that they fixed it. It's possible that since 2014 when the Z3 came out that Sony had fixed Stamina Mode, but I can't verify that and I won't assume it either. Stamina Mode takes 15 minutes after the screen turns off to kick in, but 360 kicks in IMMEDIATELY after the screen turns off, so yeah it's better. Phone works PERFECTLY when it's running, with no text messages/IMs/e-mails/calls/etc missed.

So far i've tried it with bluetooth, and it turns off directly when the screen goes off and turns back on again after a couple of seconds when the screen is back on.
Edit: the CPU hibernation lock goes at negative values when enabled.

kbab,
Exactly! Does EXACTLY what it's supposed to do! I believe if you were using the Bluetooth for music etc. though, it would let it keep running even when the screen turns off. But feel free to test that out and post your results here.
Negative value? Not sure I follow. You should turn on EVERY option in 360 (in all 3 sections) to get the full benefit of the app. Of course to do so you must pay the $1.95. But Google Play Store gives you like 2-3 hours to get a refund if you want one.
And just to confirm, you ARE running your Z5 on Marshmallow right?
What I'd like to ask you to do is (using the FULL PAID version of 360 of course), tonight when you go to bed, note the percentage of which your phone's battery power is at, then in the morning, check it again and post here both percentages, if you don't mind? Then we'll BOTH know if it really works or not on Marshmallow and Xperia. On my S7, it does nothing, but I'm REALLY hoping that's a Samsung thing and not a Marshmallow thing. Your input would be VITAL to finding this out.
Thanks!

Running Marshmallow, it even lacks Stamina mode. I have the full version also.
When CPU hibernation lock is enabled it shows -2MHz and sometimes even less.
Even with music on my bluetooth headset it disconnects after a couple of seconds after screen going off.
I will do the night test and write back tomorrow when I wake up, and no, I never charge my phone during the night.

kbab,
I can't really say or comment on the performance of 360 without you getting the full paid version. -2 MHz sounds WAY OFF though.
Do you have Stamina Mode ON on your Z5? If so, turn it off and check again.
Under "Settings Hibernation Lock", there is an option there to enable/disable Bluetooth toggle. I'd disable it and try the Bluetooth test again (WHILE music is playing).

Oh just saw your post! Didn't say "edit" by it. Ok you have Marshmallow (and paid 360) but your Z5 DOESN'T have the Stamina Mode option???? Y
Yes, I believe disabling bluetooth in 360's settings WOULD let Bluetooth run normally again. Obviously this might affect battery power slightly, but 360 should still be like 95% effective despite that. And again, make sure to DISABLE Stamina Mode completely.
That would be awesome if you did do it!
Thanks!

kbab,
How is it possible you have an Xperia Z phone WITHOUT Stamina Mode?? This is very puzzling!
If you disable Bluetooth in 360's settings (not ACTUAL Bluetooth setting in main phone's settings), then it SHOULD work just fine when screen is off. I never tested this out though as I never use bluetooth.
Ok MANY THANKS on agreeing to do the test!

Really?? Interesting. Unless they 100% fix that buggy issue I had with my Z3, they shouldn't re-release it. You have no idea how many problems it caused me. Well, you do now but still. lol I didn't really FULLY enjoy my Z3 until I got wise and kept it off and used 360.
Wow! I can't explain that one at all. Only thing is, I noticed you have the bottom section (Settings Hibernation Lock) options all turned off. Please make sure those are all on before bedtime tonight. And please turn off ACTUAL bluetooth in PHONE'S settings too as I would never leave it on overnight myself.

It went from 100% to 84% with Android OS being the highest drainer according to the battery stats.
Enabling the settings hibernation lock for Bluetooth enables it when screen turns on, even though I left it off from default. I disabled it from settings hibernation lock to prevent that.
Negative values have fixed itself.
Going to try it again this night.

YES YES YES YES YESSS!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
I usually sleep 6-7 hours too, so that helps a lot!
No man, thank YOU for being open to trying it out and paying that $1.95 in order to get the full experience!!! I'm really happy to hear it worked out, not just for me, but for you (and anyone reading this lol) as well!
I think you JUST sealed my S7's fate. lol The DAY the Xperia X Performance comes out, I'm buying it and selling my S7. (I was probably gonna do that anyway, but now I have one more GOOD reason to do so as well.)
So you ONLY disabled "Bluetooth" from 360's "Settings Hibernation Lock" (bottom section) settings? Nothing else? And you left Bluetooth off all night too right? (Please answer both.)
If you have ANY issues come up, let me know. Especially if you notice any lagging that you didn't before installing 360, or if MMS (group and/or photo) messages or IMs (etc) don't seem to be going/coming through. Either post here or PM me. I don't expect any of that to happen since I myself didn't have ANY of those issues, but still, let me know if you do ASAP please.
Thanks again so much kbab!!

Ok that's good to know. So phone's (actual) Bluetooth feature was off, but you re-enabled it in 360's settings. Got it! That's how I did it too on my Z3.
Yeah it sounds like it did. I found it strange you were having that and the -2 MHz issue, but I'm glad to hear it resolved itself.
Great!! If I don't hear back from you in the next few weeks I'll assume all is great!!
Well, enjoy the "new" Z5 and take care kbab!
