Your usb stick is not a computer, it does not need to read your phone with MTP protocol.
The phone should provide power to the USB stick, exactly as it is saying, so that your phone can read the contents of the USB stick.
Get a File Manager like FX to transfer items to and from your USB stick.

I have the same problem. It always says usb charging and I could not transfer pictures to my usb using the usb-c/usb adaptor. I tried using file manager app but I get confused with all these asking permissions and I end up unable to transfer anything. I never had this problem with my S7 edge before. I tried connecting the phone directly to the mac using android file transfer but could not connect. I would really appreciate if someone can give us a more detailed steps on how.

I tried that I have ES file explorer like "edsol" said it won't mount the stick because it's in charging mode
I tried several time to switch it off of charging mode but always flips back after a few seconds.
if "edsol" has the same problem then I guess it's not just my phone........there must be a fix for this??

I had the same situation, and I had to format the USB stick in "exFAT" to be able to copy files to it. NTFS is supported only for reading, but not for writing.
So check that your USB stick is not NTFS.
FAT32 and exFAT are the same, the difference is that exFAT doesn't have the FAT32 limitations (maximum file size of 4 GB)

Thanks...but it is exFat......I did a reformat just incase.......still a no go ??

you probably need some file manager to do what you want, Android sucks when it comes to manual file management.
Anyway I have ES file explorer loaded on my phone, so plugged in USB c to USB2 adapter, put in 32 GB FAT32 memory stick, ES file exp. open up and I transferred couple files from stick to SD, just to test it if it works. It did, but you would have to pay me a lot of money to do it on regular basis, so awkward. I just plug my phone to PC and use windows click and drag to move files around. Now I run into problem, when I was transferring my pictures, couple days ago, F???? Android lock my sd card for no reason (F????? Google is messing SD cards on phones since at least kitkat). I had to fix sd and take write protect off, but I'm sure it's Google not Samsung. Anyway, it works like a charm, just watch out for Google's broken permissions showing it's ugly head.

What File Explorer are you using? Some of them can't write to external storage because of Marshmallow permissions.
"My Files" of Samsung worked for me while "ES File Explorer" didn't work (before root)

I used ES File Explorer, I'm sorry I said wrong in my previous post, I moved couple files to phones DCIM folder, not SD, it's so awkward and I just wanted to see if it works at all, it did, I confirmed the files were moved, before deleting them. So actually I don't know if it would work on SD card, but I would never ever transfer files like that: I would use my pc laptop for direct transfer between SD and stick. So the concept I described works, but as far as permissions to particular folders go, they're so messed up and don't even want to test it again against SD. In theory it should work at least for transfer to root directory, since card is not protected, may not work for transfer to folders created by other programs due to permissions. At some point I may have to root this phone just to fix those stupid permissions, but I haven't used Marshmallow until now, so not sure how broken those permissions are here.

[Q] I Can't access MicroSD through the PC

Hi. I'm new to the forums and android. Sorry if this is not the correct place to post this.
When I connect my phone to the PC via USB I only see a few folders and none of the media files in the phone. I've tried accessing through Media Link and Windows Explorer and nothing.
Weird thing is that I see some folders and photos, like the photos taken with the RetroCamera Application.
I have been able to access my files before, it just suddenly stopped working.
Any ideas?
Try using different USB [if already did]
Go to your Hardware devices, change the MTP devices drivers to USB drivers manually [update them choose them manually from list]
Hopefully you'll get it working again
First, you should make sure that your MicroSD's file system is OK.

Can you access the files with your phone's file browser?if you can do that, the sd card might be OK,then you can check the OS.But if you can't,you may have to format the sd card.
this is normal if USB mode is set to windows media sync, its some kind of security feature I think.
you have 2 options:
1. attempt to access via the moto web phone portal as above, you need to set the USB mode to 'motorola phone portal'. but this I find is a bit hit and miss, you can manually connect using this address:
http://192.168.16.2:8080/webfolder
this can be entered into start -> run, in windows explorer, or mapped directly as a network drive
2. go into USB options and change the mode to 'USB mass storage' this will mount the SD card as a proper removable drive and show all the files properly. This option may not be available depending on what firmware is loaded onto the phone though!
to change USB mode swipe the status/menu bar at the top of the phone down, and tap 'USB connection'

I've used the moto web portal and I was able to access my files, however, it draggs when moving files. Also, the phone was in USB Mass Storage mode the whole time.
Today I connected my phone to my laptop at the office and even though the Motorola Media Link did not pick up my media files, I was able to access them through Windows Explorer. So I'm leaning towards a driver issue with my home PC.
ah ok, maybe the drivers haven't fully installed, check in the device manager to see of you can spot anything. you could also try changing the usb mode to a different setting then back again, see if that kicks the pc into installing the correct drivers
I re-installed the drivers, but still no go.
What surprises me the most is that I can't access or even see some of the folders in my SD Card. The Motorola Media Link recognizes that there is something in the card, but can't tell what it is.
Googling for days, I found this, but I don't know how to do it or even it is related to my problem:
"Finally i solve the problem. And everything in my ext sd card is back. Problem is emmc folder (means external sd card in cyanogenmod 7) not permitted for write and read.
I use QtADB Terminal for editing the directorys permition.
Step 1: type "su"
Step 2: go to root directory. If you type "ls" and can you see "emmc" you are right position.
Step 3: "chmod 777 emmc" or "$chmod 777 emmc" (for write and read permitted.)
Step 4: Reboot the phone and everythings are back in External Sd Card in EMMC
And Windows detect 2 Storage Drive now. One of 6GB Internal Sd Card, One of 8GB External Sd Card. And i can use my Music player Power AMP.
Everythings perfect for me now. Cyanogen is great ROM but this permision problem should bu fixed. Because i spend three day for solve this problem."

MTP mode hangs at My Computer

Whenever I plug my Note 2 into my PC and try to open My Computer it hangs, because it is thinking/doing something.
I thing the reason might be the number of mp3 files I put on the external SD card, because if I unmount it and then plug it in there is no problem. Maybe it is scaning it first?
It is very annoying. Any ideas?
Have you tried to insert the card directly in your computer? Maybe that can give you a hint about the issue.

I have - no problem.
I also used the SGS3 UMS app to activate USB Mass Storage and again no problem.
I am almost certain that problem lies in the stupid MTP mode. Maybe Windows scans the sdcard when the phone is connected, because after around a minute the explorer unfreezes and I can work with it.
I would delete the big folder of mp3s and see what happens.
Like I thought the problem was the big folder full of mp3s. I deleted it and now the phone opens instantly on my PC. I have to investigate further if the cause is a particular mp3 file or maybe the one .flac file I have thrown in there.

Transfer Files from PC

I've been trying to transfer the files I took from my Galaxy S4 and saved them to my computer, to my G3. When I connect the G3 to my computer, I only see 2 files in the "Internal Storage". It won't recognize my SD Card either. Is there a setting I may be missing, that will allow me to see other folders? I can't copy and paste anything to my Internal Storage. Thanks for your help.

Hmmm...I tried to upload the pics from my desktop and I get this message. "Failed to upload. No write permission on sd card."
I have to turn on the camera mode for it to transfer. It won't recognize anything in MTP mode. :/
I wish I could do all this without using AirDroid. It won't show the phone in MTP, but in PTP it will, but only 2 folders on the whole phone, no sdcard. And I can't directly put anything on the phone.
I had a problem with my D855 MTP mode as well. Folders are all there, but some files are either missing, or reduced in size. I cannot copy them out to PC. In these folders, I also cannot copy files into them. What I did to resolve the problem, is to reboot the phone with USB cable attached to the PC. Then, before the phone can complete its boot up sequence, I will have some time to copy the files in and out. It is really quite troublesome.
MTP troubles?
This is what's worked for me (D850/at&t):
Install LG United Mobile driver for ADB support
Enable USB debugging in developer options on phone
Verify MTP mode is selected
Connect USB and accept RSA signature on phone
I know that ADB isn't particularly necessary for MTP, but in my experience with roms on the old Nexus (for which I used Google's ADB driver), it was a sure bet every time. gl

Thanks for the suggestions guys. But it seems like my phone refuses to be recognized in MTP mode. And only partially recognized in PTP. I think I may have to do a hard reset this weekend. :/
I went back to Best Buy yesterday and returned my phone and got another one. And now my file transfers work. I guess I had a defective phone. I'm glad everything got back to normal.
I also had the problem that I didn't see my SDcard, but when I disabled debugging mode I suddenly could

Auto-cancel when copying files to PC

Hi guys, I'm just new here. I have a problem with my Zenfone 2
I'm trying to backup the files of my data manually to my PC but after like a minute of transferring files, it auto-cancels. Is this a problem with the Zenfone 2 or the PC?
Debugging mode is turned on and I even tried using Share Link but it still auto-cancels when it copies some files. I need to backup because I plan on installing CM 12.1
Make sure it never gets moved while copying, maybe also try another cable or USB port.
check your cable or the connector, it seem to be the intermittent connection you are having.
nothing about the software.
mine happen to cancel too, when i use one of the usb port of my pc.

Thanks for the info but when I reversed the process (pc to my phone) it works perfectly fine. But yeah, I just went on to transfer my files to the external SD card instead

I've made sure that I dont move the phone or even touch it while the process is on-going but still the same results
I'll try using another USB cable when I get my hands on a new one.
I had this problem with Moto E. Some files simply doesnt copy (i dont know why). I solve that with a simple solution: SD card!
Copy to sdcard, then put in a card reader, copy to pc. profit.

This or use one of the WiFi file transfer apps like aridroid. I've been using WiFi File Explorer Pro for years now and it is incredibly useful.

Yes, it works without SD/card reader :good:
Airdroid is very useful to do it, and to force install apks.

CM13 + USB Drive?

First I backed up all my apps onto a USB drive using Titanium Backup, than I updated my Nexus 7 to CM13. I can't get the USB drive to mount to the system properly so I can restore all my apps. I've done all the things that TB needs such as enabled root access, etc... The system recognizes the drive, and I can browse the files using the CM13 popup. But it doesn't seem to be mounted to the file system in a way that TB can find it (using detect -> whole device). I also can't find by using a 3rd party file manager to browse the system. I tried using stickmount. It complains about the SU that CM uses, and it never has the toast message whenever a driver is inserted, even though I set it to open stickmount by default whenever a USB drive is inserted. Installing all the apps I need will take up most of the file space, so I can't just copy over all of the TB backedup files.

Have you tried this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-usb-marshmallow-1-0-t3272072 ?
That's for the phone showing up as a drive on a computer. I can get that to work. I was trying to get a USB drive connected directly to the phone over OTG and mounted in the filesystem. I finally gave up.

It also solved OTG mounting issues on my N7, that's why I suggested the module. Well, don't give up
How?
I'm on cm13 and I'm having the same problem with opening files and I installed what you recommended but I don't see any options when hooking up a USB drive over otg cable. I have been able to see the device in the included file manager enabling root but I seem to lose it and it's not helpful. What do I do? Thanks
Edit: it's definitely installed properly as it does remember my PC connection preference.
