Hi, I have a Nexus 5X with unlocked bootloader and with rooted. Since some days ago, I have a notification with a security update, but with the custom recovery it is not automatically installed.
Is there any way to install this OTA updates?
If you install TWRP (which you should, IMHO), it is easy. I'm not at all experienced, but I did it without losing any data. But with TWRP, you can do a full backup first. i have TWRP ... and when try to install the updade i end up in recovery mode - after rebooting nothing changed ant the ota update notification is still there

The updates will not install on a rooted phone. Updates check if your software is stock and if not it will not update, includes recovery partition. Your best bet is to just update the ROM you're on. The ROM developer typically updates his base on a regular basis especially if it's one of the more active ones like Pure Nexus or Chroma among others.
If you really need Google updates to happen then you must go back to stock image and updates will work then.
Edit #2: If you are rooted but stock w/ TWRP, just unroot and flash stock recovery and the updates will work or you can ADB sideload the update zip w/ TWRP.

The link I provided has explicit instructions. I remembered wrong, though. You don't need TWRP, you need to do it in Fastboot mode, so you need to find the latest Fastboot program, or install the Android SDK. Then follow step 10 in the link I provided.
I bought a second hand Samsung Galaxy Tab S a few months ago and it has been working fine.
However, when I looked at version of Android then seems a bit old (5.0.2) and when I did a check for updates it said that it couldn't update because "The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorised way". When I checked then it seems that the device has been rooted.
A quick search suggested I should run SuperSU to remove the root. So, I had to download and install this, but, when I run it says "The SU binary needs to be updated. Continue?" - if I do then I get another message "If you have a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM that can be used to (try to) install the SU binary" and gives me a choice of Normal or TWRP/CWM. I am struggling to know how to proceed.
So, should it be possible to remove the root and still preserve all my data, apps, settings, etc?
If so, is SuperSu the way to go or are there other tools I should look at, such as Kingo Android Root?
Or, am I faced with rebuilding with a stock ROM?

If your root manager is supersu then it has the option to unroot in it's settings.

I've tried to fire up SuperSU, but, run into problems, as described in my initial post, and this is what I need to resolve.
Any ideas?

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the end goal. As stated Android v5.0.2 is the latest non-custom firmware available. As a previous owner has unlocked the bootloader and seems to have flashed a SuperSu version that modification is blocking any OTA update to v5.0.2. It is also clear your trying to avoid loosing user data.
Would it be acceptable to be rooted and use a different method to apply the latest Samsung stock firmware for your region? If the answer is yes install a TWRP recovery for your device model but you'll loose your warranty by tripping KNOX (you may already be in that state). Follow the instructions in the TabS TWRP thread.
Then finish the SuperSU install (where your stuck today). Then install Flashfire. With Flashfire and the downloaded latest Samsung firmware package you can flash the boot and system images to update your install then use ODIN to update the Bootloader image from that download firmware. You could also flash the recovery image but that would overwrite TWRP and in your case I don't see the point. Flashfire needs the whole Samsung firmware file to be available on the device itself unlike when using ODIN to flash the Bootloader image.
As I'm rooted but retained my warranty I use FlashFire and ODIN to update to the latest stock firmware and never loose user data. Unfortunately to root and not trip KNOX I did wipe my user data that first time so it does not seem to be an option for you.
Hope that gives you some ideas. In your current state it maybe as simple as completing the SuperSU install (assuming a custom recovery (TWRP/CM) is already installed) then using Flashfire and ODIN as described.

I have 5.01 and I want to update to 6.01. I want to wipe it clean. Got factory image from Google site.
What's the difference between the OTA and factory downloads?
I can just flash the factory in TWRP right? Will I lose root, or will TWRP ask if I want to keep root?
I still have boot loader unlocked.I just can't remember for the life of me, haven't done flashing etc in a few years.

N7 is no longer supported by Google and there will be no more OTA.
You can't flash the entire factory image directly from TWRP (but it is doable).
When you flash the factory image, you will lose root, TWRP and all your data.
NRT can simplify flashing, rooting and restoring TWRP.
You have unlocked boot loader
Just fastboot flash all as yiu want clean install
After that fastboot flash twrp
After that flash superSU
Done.
No need for any toolkit's, try to stay away of them and do it manually.

I know it isn't supported anymore. They still have the image's though.
Im just confused... Long time ago when I was really into all this, I just went to Googles page, downloaded the .zip and flashed it in TWRP. Now, the Google page is different and there isn't just 1 anymore. Can I just open the factory image and unzip the update part and flash that in TWRP?

Googles page used to have the OTA zip to update from prior newest to newest(5.0 to 5.01 for example) but than they also had the full OTA so you could do a 4.0 to 5.1 or whatever. Why they change the site? Which one do I use now to go from my 5.01 to current 6.1?

That's the pronlem, normally yes I would do that no problem. I'm in the middle of upgrading my PC after had a surge or something and fried my ****.
That's why I want to do it via TWRP like I always did before. Every time TWRP asked if I wanted to retain root after updating also. So what in the world happened in the last year that It doesn't seem like I can now? Like I said above, I can't find a full update OTA on!y the incremental OTAs...

Ok yes that's possible
If you have twrp already
Check development forum and choose one of the ROM.
Download it to your tablet plus gapps
Wipe system, cache and data leaving internal storage.
Flash ROM reboot, come back to twrp and flash gapps. ( Can do ROM + Gapps in one go)
Download SuperSU and flash to get root.
You can't flash stock image / OTA via twrp.
While you're doing all this try the 7.0 ROM its good enough now.

Ahhh what happened??? Why can you not flash them with TWRP???
Thats what I used to do no problem. Not referring to custom roms either.
I am wanting stock rooted.
I used to download the update when one was released from Google's site, put the update.zip in main directory, go in recovery and flash update.zip. TWRP would ask me if I wanted to keep root, I say yes, reboot, update installs... than i'm on the new Android version still rooted.
How is that not possible now?
I am so annoyed... I never had to go through ADB or fastboot to update to latest. I did everything on my N7, it kept root for me and everything.
I feel so dumb right now its ridiculous lol
So than what way can I go about updating my N7 2013 Wifi, which I currently have 5.01. I am Rooted w/ unlocked bootloader.
What is the best way not using ADB, or a PC at all for that matter to update to the latest, 6.01. If possible, how can I keep root, if not i'm not worried about it, i'll just re-root myself.

Already told you get a custom ROM, get the one mostly stock or if there's a stock ROM in zip format available.
In future you might need to update that bootloader of yours for newer ROMs
Sorry if this sounds harsh why are you so into keeping root as you can't do it again? It's simple as flashing SuperSU. Root method changed after 6 you cant have old methods with 6.

So, I have a Sprint HTC 10. It was rooted, and then an OTA update came out about a week or so ago, version 1.80.651.10.
I unrooted and installed it, since I have TWRP it seems to take over the install process, but more or less does install it correctly.
Once my phone rebooted, it complained that the download was corrupt like it always does (likely due to TWRP) but this has happened before and the update always actually does install successfully. Going to system settings I can confirm that I am on version 1.80.651.10.
However, this time, it seems hell-bent on assuming that the update didn't install. It keeps putting an update notification in the notification bar that refuses to go away. If I go to check for updates, it confirms that I am up to date and the notification disappears.... for a short while, but then appears again asking me to install the update.
How can I get rid of this annoying thing? I haven't even gotten around to re-rooting my phone yet, as been confirmed by root and safetynet checkers, the ROM is basically at stock right now.

If you have twrp installed it wont update the firmware only software. You need to flash firmware seperatly with fastboot.
So I would need to extract the firmware or something out of the OTA file and flash that manually? What partitions would the firmware be updating?
And I am assuming this would overwrite TWRP and I would have to reinstall it?

So I have to flash the OTA with TWRP, afterwards I have to extract the firmware file out of the OTA.zip and flash it with fastboot. But which commands are necessary in fastboot?
To get this out of the way, you can only flash firmware over fastboot if you're S-OFF. Otherwise, you'll need to restore completely to stock via custom recovery or RUU then update by OTA.

Thats not true. You flash in ruu mode when S - ON. If your are S - Off you can do it from download mode. I think you are a little confused with that thread. Those firmwares are modified and for S -Off phones only.

Ah, you're right! Sorry. To flash while S-ON, the CID and MID must match the zip + the bootloader must be locked, right?

Im not sure about locked or relocked bootloader, i think it will work with unlocked but i could be wrong.

I just had another thought, correct me if I'm wrong. You can flash the OTA manually through the stock recovery as a ZIP.
The OTA ZIP can either be downloaded in various places online, or you can download it on the phone as usual then find it in /data/data/com.htc.updater/files (if your device is rooted). More info at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66548846&postcount=3.
You can then flash the OTA through recovery if you have;
* 100% unmodified system (can be restored from TWRP backup)
* Stock recovery

Correct. Also unmodified boot. But if your flashing unmodified system image, boot and stock recovery you may aswell just boot to android and take the ota.
Anyone has the latest(released Feb 16th) oreo OTA full stock firmware from T-Mobile?
I tried pulling it from a logcat. Was going to fastboot flash it since I can't install it while rooted. Every url I found in the logcat gave me a 405 error though.
I got another Moto Z2 Force today. Fresh out of the box TMO. Came with the OCX27. I have not yet taken the update. If someone can guide me on how to extract the OTA That'd be helpful. Only thing I am willing to do so far with this new device is unlock the bootloader that's it. I will not root or install TWRP until I can extract the OTA and attempt to fix my other device stuck in an unknown baseband no IMEI state. I got there by attempting to install TWRP and root with Magisk.

Pulling the log through ADB will yield the OTA download link. That's how @joemossjr and I grabbed the Oreo update from nougat for TMO and Sprint.

It's hard to explain. You have to capture the moment the phone grabs the OTA file from Motorola's update website.
Enable developer options
Enable ADB
Plug phone up to a PC that has updated ADB binaries
Open terminal/command prompt
Adb shell
Logcat
After you do that your terminal of choice will start spitting out the log.
Run the system updater.
Download the OTA. At that moment, one of the logs should give you a VERY long URL. That's the download link you're looking for.
Copy and paste into your browser. You should be auto downloading it.

I'm currently on OCX27 and I've got the notification to download OCX27.1. I do have an unlocked bootloader and I am rooted with Magisk. Since I have not overwritten the recovery partition, can I take this update? On most other phones I have, I've been able to restore the stock recovery partition, flash the update, and flash TWRP back on, but on this Moto, I chose to boot twrp for loading magisk via adb. Make sense? If I'm not able to take this update, can I shut these update notifications off? They are already off in dev options.

I used titanium backup to freeze the update service as it's named in the notification.

Did you get your second Z2 rooted and if so did you use magisk v16? I just got a Z2 today that is on the December 1, 2017 security patch, OCX27.1, Android 8.00 and I'd like to root but hesitant. I have already unlocked the bootloader, placed magisk and twrp-3.2.1-1-nash zip(s) in internal storage, and know how to fastboot boot into recovery, I just don't want to brick my new phone. Any help with step by step instructions once I'm in TWRP to flash magisk is greatly appreciated! Do I need to do any of the following: Keep system read only or allow modifications before flashing magisk? wipe data/factory reset, mount storage, wipe cache and dalvik after flashing? All you need to do is grab the latest twrp img and zip file from twrp. Should be version 3.2.1-1
Then fastboot boot the img file, then once in twrp you want to flash the zip file, then when that is done reboot back into recovery
Then simply flash Magisk and reboot. Done.

I downloaded the 27.1 Oreo zip from this thread, do I flash it in twrp or should I flash it in adb from the bootloader? I get the following error message in twrp whenever I wipe dalvik/cache, try to install a zip, or do a backup which always says fail. I need a fresh install and re root, etc. Thank you!!

you can not flash with twrp. open the zip and see if there is a "flash-all.bat" file as well as adb and fastboot files. if not then pull them from one of the other flashall zips and add them to 27.1 zip. boot your phone to the bootloader, connect usb cable to your device and pc, then run the .bat file.

Factory reset gets the same error message shown in the attached photo. Thanks for the info, unfortunately I'm still a bit confused. Is this the only method to return to stock? I've searched but I'm not finding much and this method is completely new to me. In the past I've used Odin and LG up with my other devices, this is my first motorola. If I wipe internal storage in twrp will that erase the OS and need a new install? I am thinking that may clear up my issues but nervous that the phone won't boot up after that. Thanks and my apologies for my noob questions.

Here's the official 27.1 firmware. The flashfile.xml has the correct order and commands to flash in fastboot, or search xda for the converter to a flashall.bat.
