Poor microphone quality - Note 7 Questions & Answers

Guys,
It seems that Note7 is not for recording memories at a concert
Very poor audio quality is being recorded ... brand new phone, never had any liquid contact or something to affect mic quality

It sounded fine until you zoomed in on that person wearing a banana outfit.... strange.

Works fine for me

I guess that a difference is that i was like 10-15 meters from the speakers, while you are at several hundred meters far from them.

[Q] Recording video in loud environments?

Hey all!
I'm very curious about how this phone handles loud environments when recording video. Anyone knows?
On the SGS2 it doesn't take too much to get the sound all distorted. The iPhone handles this very well and my old N95 also could handle really loud environments without sound distortion but I have yet to find a high-end Android phone that can handle this in a satisfying way.
Glad if anyone could shed some light on this. Sample videos would be great!
Anyone with some insight on this? Or would be kind enough to try it out? Please..?
I have the phone but not been to any shows lately. Will give it a go at some point.
Does it only happen at concerts etc. where the sound is more diverse or is recording loud music from your own speakers causing the same issue?
Defining a test or at lest the loud environment in mind might make people more likely to try it.
Well, since it's Saturday it would be nice with a test at a night club with some loud music for a good start!
Testing it at a concert would be even better but I know those don't come around as often.
Not a concert, but a busy street on a very windy day:
I love the my GN but video recording is TERRIBLE with loud noises. I have good sound system in my car with a 2000 watt sub and I recorded to see wat the audio recording quality was like and is awful. All noises are distorted really bad !
May have something to do with the fact that even though it records in 1080p and has two mics .. it only records in mono !
:-(
I'm going to a J.Cole concert on Monday I'll post a video from the gig to show u how bad it is.

Thanks for the info, although it doesn't sound very promising...
I would really like to see a video from that gig you're going to, to see for myself. Thanks!
No problem , I'll post a video Tuesday morning for you

Nice to see another Cole fan on XDA
I recorded a Cole concert back in August on my HTC Incredible S and the sound was so distorted with all the bass. You could barely make out anything other than bass in 95% of my recordings

That's Before I'm Gone, Higher, and All I Want is You. I didn't upload a lot of my other recordings (Bass heavier tracks like Blow Up, Looking for Trouble etc..) because I didn't see a point since you couldn't hear anything.
ummmm dunno if u removed ur link or an admin but i couldnt view them on my galaxy nexus cus it dont have flash (boo) so im on my laptop now but they have been removed
cole concert 2mnorrow, hella pumped.
will up some concert recording from my nexus after

Hope you enjoy the show, one of the best ones I've been to. Cole fans are some of the craziest I've ever seen from looking at all the Youtube videos.
I can't wait till you put up some of your recordings, I hope it's not bass filled. I was in the 3rd/4th row from the stage so I think that might have been why my recordings had the bass ruining the video because I was so close to the speakers...
Seen him loads of times before bloody love him
Imma be at the front again so it should b a good video. I've just taken this short crazy video, just to show how bad recording loud stuff is on this fone is.
Sorry such a crap video tho

Thanks for your video samples! Although I was hoping for better results... But now I know at least that Samsung hasn't improved that part from the SGS2.. too bad.
So no fix for Nexus also? I was gonna sell my SGS2 to Nexus because I thought it will record good in louder environments. How the hell did Apple managed to pull this of on 4 and 4s?

I took this in what I would consider to be a loud environment and mine did fine:
I cannot post links because I'm still a new user but search on YouTube "Medina Bagpipe Band"

Stereo or mono speakers?

Everything in the title.
I read somewhere that the dual speakers are not stereo. Is that true!?
Envoyé de mon Nexus 7 en utilisant Tapatalk
There are dual speakers. Some websites have false info or they are too lazy to fix it. They also list OIS, but the phone does not have OIS. It was stated by google that the camera has other featuers which is why it doesn't need OIS.

Single front-facing speaker
There are 2 speakers for sure, but did they play in stereo together or just 2 mono?

From the nexus 5x product page:
Media
Single front-facing speaker
3 microphones (1 front, 1 top, 1 bottom) with noise cancellation

How's the audio recording?

I'm a journalist, so the quality of audio recording is really important to me. I need to be able to hear indivuals speaking, even if they're in a relatively noisy environment. I've had an iPhone for about a year now, which records audio very well. I'm interested to jump back into Android and the OP3 seems like an all-around great phone, but I did hear that audio in video recordings is pretty bad.
Is this something that has been fixed? Is it an issue that only impacts the audio in video recordings? Also, if you have an anecdotal comparison to an iPhone or HTC, that would be amazing.
Thanks!
I know it's not the answer you're looking for, but consider a recording device like a Zoom H1. They are really affordable, but capture incredible sounding audio. They take micro SD cards, so you can transfer to your phone using an OTG reader.

That looks like a great device and I probably should consider an actual recorder. However, that's still an extra $100 on top of what it would cost me to purchase the phone and I have to consider that from a financial perspective. Anyway, what's been your experience with recording audio through the phone?
You are a professional journalist? And you obviously see clearly that good equipment is important for you?
And then, dude, you're whining about laughable $100 more??
Come on, you're not serious, aren't you?
So does that mean the audio recording does not work well in loud environments? An actual answer would be nice from somebody on here

I do, but when my iPhone and previous HTC devices have provided adequate audio recording, the thought of adding another device (even a small one) to my bag sounds annoying. It also, in a way, makes the price of this phone jump from $400 to $500 for me. When I record audio, it's always for personal transcription and is never published in any way. It doesn't have to be a great recording. I just need to be able to clearly understand my subject. The iPhone is consistent in this area and I just want to know how the OnePlus compares.
Put my OP3 on my piano and recorded this short snippet.
App: Hi-Q MP3 recorder, WAV quality, gain -4,0.
File is 100% unedited, uploaded it "as is".

I can't imagine that an iPhone would do that significantly better... so, I think any worries about the audio recording quality of the OP3 are unnecessary.
It seems that about the only thing that is really subpar on the OP3 is the weak WiFi.

Call quality

When you call granny, does she keep saying "Huh?! Wut?!" or does the conversation flow pretty well? Rate this thread to express how you feel about the OnePlus 3T's call quality. A higher rating indicates that calls are clear and crisp, and that regardless of background noise, you can hear the other party clearly (and with ample volume) and they can hear you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Sound is distorted.... from most callers.. but not from all of them.. (to loud??)
I too found call quality lacking.
I don't have issues with calls at all. Same quality as I had on Note 5, Nexus 6p and iPhone e 7plus

Phone Quality is good, but when it comes to Whatsapp Calls or Skype its pretty bad compared to my really old iPhone 5s, people do complain a lot and ask me to use a headset cause if put on Speaker they cant hear me very well.
Call quality is decent imo, microphone's sensitivity could be a bit better. Yesterday while driving I received a call so I had to use loud speaker mode. The phone was lying on the passenger's seat and the person I talked with could hardly hear me
Call quality issue was fixed for me on 4.0.2!!! now is perfect !!!!!!!!!!!!!
****** (five stars now) .. but changing vote not allowed .. REALY !?!
Sounds like crap...:crying:
Both myself and my friend have the 3T, we both complain about the quality and we both cant hear each other.
It's very decent IMO.
OnePlus 3T - OxyOS 4.0.2 (Nougat)
Running two SIMS - AT&T and T-Mobile in Dallas. Call quality is really inconsistent. I get lots of people complaining about me breaking up. Never had this problem with my LG G4 on either network. Would love OnePlus to enhance their radio or at least allow some tuning of the radio.
So far, "thumbs down" on the call quality.
I have been using iPhones for years before switching to the OP3T now. Although I'm happy with the decision overall, call quality definitely is a step down from the iPhone, particularly in terms of clarity.
Not too bad though, so it's still ok.

Also have a lot of trouble with Whatsapp and Skype calls both on Oneplus 3 & 3T.... I beg for the developers to fix this, i suppose it is only due to OS optimization of these apps or just poor microphone settings
Yep, same here unfortunately. I have serious issues when calling via hangout. My girlfriend complains about not hearing me as well as about seeing bad video quality. Never ever had such problems with my nexus 6p or my iPhone 6s plus...
Actually this is kind of frustrating...

i thought it was pretty good. better then my note 4
Anyone moved to one plus 3T from S7 edge or lg g5?
How good is the call quality compared to them? Voice clarity and volume.
Thank you
It's better from s7 edge more clean.

You mean the S7 edge is better. The sound is louder in the S7 edge, one thing i really noticed. And the screen colours...
No i mean the call quality in op3t its better.

Nope, not in my opinion! Or my s7 edge was very good or the OP3T i have now is really bad. I can listen well but the sound was better in the S7.

[Q] 5T Audio recording in loud environments (electronic concerts)

Hello guys,
Yesterday my Nokia 7 Plus arrived and i am overall pretty happy with it. However i am a bit disappointed that there is no 60FPS video recording and no way to unlock the bootloader yet.
Now i am thinking about switching to the One Plus 5T, but because video recording at concerts is a big point for me and my last phone, the one plus 3 had a really bad quality, i am wondering how the 5T is performing?
Yesterday i received a testvideo from a OnePlus 5 user and i must say i am not pretty happy with that kind of quality:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/bgeE8qdpTo805BBt1
When the bass kicks in, mostly every other part of the song is not recognizable. Does the OnePlus 5 uses the same microphones as the 5T?
What's your opinions switching from the Nokia 7 Plus to the 5T?
Thank you in advance
nobody?
Well for me the bass definitely is clipping at concerts. Nothing you can do but using a low cut. The bass at concerts is too loud anyway but I have to say that the iPhone makes better videos and has a higher audio quality at concerts.

Yeah, the bass at most concerts is too loud, but i heard a lot of devices (huawei, samsung, iphone) which had no problem recording in heavy bass environments.
Made a testvideo yesterday with my Nokia 7 Plus and i must say the audio quality is the best i've ever heard from a phone so far.
I am wondering if the active noise cancellation of the 5T destroys the sound quality, because the one plus 3 had the same issue.
