How to flash zip w/ sd as internal? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

TWRP hangs when my micro sd is formatted as internal. I can use the cyanogen recovery to update the nightly rom but what if I want to flash gapps or other zips? Any way to flash stuff easier in this set up?

usb otg

Make sure you have TWRP >=3.0.0 as those are the only versions that support adoptable storage

TWRP won't recognize external SD card

Right now there is no ROM installed on my phone because I just wiped my phone, but when I went to install a new ROM, it doesn't seem to recognize my external SD card. I tried 2 SD cards and neither of them work, but they work on my other phone. How can I fix this issue? I went to mount and it says "E: Unable to mount '/external_sd'.
Update twrp if available, if not try to reflash it and if it still doesn't work then try cwm

Thanks for the reply. Which method of installation would be the best? Odin? I only have access to recovery as far as I know.
Yes Odin

The latest TWRP doesn't seem to recognize my SD card either. Also both of them are saying that my device is not rooted and it asks if I want to fix root. I'm trying CWM now but it isn't finding anything either.
Edit: CWM says my device isn't rooted as well.
Edit 2: Flashed http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23212708291679687 with Odin and when the phone boots up, it's stuck on the Samsung logo. Any thoughts?
Factory reset. Incompatible data probably causing boot hang.
This will wipe apps and data.
Thanks for the help everyone. I flashed back to stock and re-rooted. However it still won't read anything from the external SD. Does this mean the SD reader is broken?
Can you plug it into the computer? Does it see it there? If so what is the file system type? Can you format it?

Yep, the computer only sees the phone's harddrive, not the SD card. On my other phone, the SD card is working fine.
No, I mean plug the card into the computer. Not the phone. But if another device uses it ok, then you msy just need to reformat using the computer.

Reformat the card? I will try that. But I have two SD cards and neither work on my S3, and both work on my S4.
That tells me the cards are ok and something is probably wrong with the device then. If you format one card to fat32 and it still can't read it, its probably hardware.
@bjornturoque Here was my problem. Exactly like yours. I am BL unlocked, Rooted, TWRP 2.8.7. I am having a problem with the ext sd card not being read in TWRP. I have had ver 2.8.5 / 2.8.7 / 3.0.2 of TWRP and none of them will read the card. I have tried formatting the card with my Note4, GS 5, Tab S, and my PC using SD Card Formatter. Still getting the same result.
Here is what I did to fix it.
Install Xposed, Download Wanam Xposed, activate the module, open and go to security hacks and check the box for SDcard RW permission, then reboot.
I just did this to mine and it fixed my problem. Hope it works for ya.
Format SD-card via Windows (FAT32/Default Allocation).

No, doesn't work
I have a 128 GB SD with exFAT, it worked without problems in TWRP 3.0.2 recovery under CM12.1
Now I am on CM13 and beside the bluddy permission google-bug it works in the system but not anymore in TWRP 3.0.2 recovery.
I tried to fix the permissions to write to external sd (this 128 GB sd) by adding stuff to the /data/system/packages.xml file, see this post.
But I didn't change the wrong thing I am pretty sure and doubt that this is related, as TWRP comes without using this file, I guess.
I flashed 3.0.2 again with Odin, no change.
Fact is, that I installed CM13 with another SD-card, a 64 GB FAT32, not this one. Maybe it never worked under CM13. But anyway, what has TWRP to do with CM13 and its permissions? TWRP is previous to any CM system, which is not running at TWRP times.
What could that be?
I flashed now CWRM v6.0.4.7 (ClockworkMod Recovery) but the problem persists:
E: Can't mount /storage/sdcard1
Error mounting /storage/sdcard1

What is it? The sdcard is working flawlessly in the running system and another FAT32 sdcard works in TWRP. What do I miss here?
Is it that TWRP and CWM doesn't know exFAT?
I think to be quite sure that this was working, I have exFAT since a while now.
Deleted.

CUSTOM RECOVERY + ROOT with EXTERNAL SD CARD

Is there currently a custom recovery and root that support external SD Cards? The only one i've found thus far is TWRP and it openly states it doesn't currently support external sd cards. Was just wondering if there's anything out there that does support it.

I have an unlocked edition that I changed the CId to dev edition in. Either way, they're the same phone, one just comes factory unlocked and one doesn't.
I have TWRP and have made 4 or 5 backups to my external SD card, as well as installed several apps through my external SD card on TWRP. It works. Just make sure you have v 2.7.x.x.
EDIT:
Click this sentence for the official TWRP page for our HTC One M8's

You mean version 2.7.x.x for TWRP?
I tried to flash the recovery but i get the message:
error: cannot open 'recovery'
I renamed the TWRP disc image into recovery.img
The command is wrong.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.zip
Or
fastboot boot recovery.zip

Copy ROM and GAPPS to your internal storage and flash them just like you would if they were on an external SD card.
i've found an ADB sideload guide but my device is not recognized in recovery mod (CWM)
it appears in device manager as LG E980 without driver.
i've installed latest usb drivers for the G PRO from lg site, but it doesn't help much.
I do have access to the internal storage in recovery mode,
but if i wipe the system doesn't it wipe all the data including the zip files?
what should i wipe without losing the internal storage data?
thank you all for helping. :good:

I'm not sure about CWM, it's been a long time since I used it. But with TWRP I always format system, data and cache and I never do lose my items in my download folders, or any other folder in which I have anything stored. /Data and /System are ROM only related and do not affect your stored files when you format them, at least not with TWRP, and I'm pretty certain, not with CWM either.
thanks guys. I've managed to install from internal storage.
but i have a different problem now,
i've installed CM 10.2 and now i don't have sound, other than that the rom works great.
is there a fix? my model is F240 korean.
Try this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786566 it is a kernel to run CM11 based ROMs on the F240. You will need to install a custom recovery first which I'm pretty sure can be done with freegee.

bumped trwp and external sdcard

Does anyone know how to get twrp to recognize the external SD card when in recovery but also be able to have the computer recognize it to
Just install the new TWRP 2.8.2.0 that's been bumped. The support for exfat has been improved.

TWRP stuck on booting - because sd card

Hello everyone,
the following happend:
everything was ok
bought a sdcard, inserted and cm ask how i want to use it, i selected: use as internal memory (cm moved 17 gb to it)
want to boot to twrp, and get stuck at twrp logo, every time i try
removed sdcard and retry.... it works
My stats:
Device: d855
OS: CM13 (A6.0.1)
Default Kernel
TWRP: 3.0.0
SD Card: Samsung 64gb
What i tried:
reflash twrp (not solved the problem)
boot to twrp without sd, then inserted sd, and tried to mount .... cannot mount :/
somebody has an idea ?
It because using SD card as internal storage is broke. Most custom ROMs have a lot of issues with it and in stock Android it has issues as well. This is why LG and Samsung have it disabled. I would recommend you use it a external storage.

Ok thx, to make it work again I have to factory reset & clean install rom, right?

You should be able to format it in settings under storage.
Do a clean install will not reformat the SD card.
A clean install wouldn't hurt after you format the SD card.
