Recall with no receipt from Craigslist. - Note 7 Questions & Answers

I bought my Verizon Note 7 on Craigslist and have been trying unsuccessful return it to a Verizon store or Samsung. Everyone have been given me the run around that I needed to go back to the seller for the recall, which is not going to be possible. Is anyone of you in the same situation and how did or are you dealing with it?

I'm in a similar situation. So I called 1800-Samsung, and I have to go to the samsung store for a replacement

my brother bought one verizon from craigslist and brought it to saudi arabia, it was in blue color as its not available here, so i asked samsung saudi facebook page and they redirected me to a local store, refund went smooth, got the cash already.
P.S. i didnt had payment receipt either. They even let me keep all the accessories.

It's different in the U.S. Samsung has no retail stores and up until recently didn't even sell direct. People had to go through a U.S. carrier. They started selling unlocked phones with little fanfare online and for the Note7 sold carrier-branded versions at samsung.com. So in OP's case he bought a Verizon-branded Note7 from a third party and has no receipt of the phone's original purchase. When looking at the phone's history in their system Verizon doesn't see it tied to the person trying to exchange it (OP). There's a bunch of people in similar situations that bought phones from eBay, Swappa, and Craigslist who don't have their phone's original purchase history and carrier's and Samsung are pointing them back to the person who originally bought the phone. It's a tough situation and dramatizes the unseen risk of buying third party vs. from a carrier or Samsung.

Which is a bit silly because if the phone explodes, the Craigslist seller won't be the one on the hook, Samsung and maybe the carrier who refused the exchange will be, since it's a safety recall and not a warranty exchange/return. If there's a safety recall on a car, you don't need to go back to the one you brought it from, any dealer will replace/repair the defect for free.

Very true on the dealer thing

I bought my in the UK via ebay. The seller would not take the phone back and ebay upheld the decision. So I emailed the company ceo from the Samsung website and they emailed back the very next day. Even had them deliver a new phone to me.

Did you have to return the old phone?
Can you post the name and address of whom you dealt with?

damn i didnt think it would be an issue. the imei should be in samsungs database and they should be able to send u a return shipping package to send it off i would think. once they have the recalled one i would think they would just send u the replacement. i am shocked it isn't that simple. like said before if i am driving a chevy and there is a recall i can take it to any chevy dealership and have it fixed no questions asked. with the whole fiasco and bad publicity samsung is getting i would think they would be bending over backwards to make the whole exchange process as smooth as possible.

I bought my note 7 off of kijiji (similar to Craigslist, here in Canada). When the note 7 was being recalled, I contacted the seller and he said Samsung is still in the process of how to handle the exchange program and would keep me updated. The same day in which the replacement form website opened up, he sent me the link. Nice guy.
Anyways try contacting the seller if you still have his/her number. If seller doesn't respond, call Samsung customer support. Good luck in getting your replacement device.

Gnex international warranty

Hi guys I had been extremely interested in the gnex for the past 2 months...buying it is on my top of list.
I wanted to get it from amazon /newegg since they have the full international warranty.beccause I am out of the country frequently for 2-3 months,in Asia,Europe,china,India,etc. My question here would be,people who got the phone from handbag/clove/negri,did u guys get international warranty n stuff recognized by Samsung?does your papers clearly mention international warranty? I have never bought from these sellers lol....in case of a problem,if I just send it in to the service center in the country,that's enuf right?I don't want a seller warranty,but a true manufacturer warranty.

I ordered from Negri. To my knowledge Samsung UK wont warranty imported GalNex directly.
Negri's policy:
Every (Non Carrier Branded) device comes with a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer. After 25 days our exchange/return policy has expired, you should contact the manufacturer for repair or for warranty replacement or exchange, if your device qualifies for this. Please contact the manufacturer to determine if the device you hold is covered under their warranty. If you would like to send your device to us to send to the manufacturer you are free to do so. Please request an RMA. This will delay the warranty process by 1-2 weeks and you will be charged shipping to and from the manufacturer. You will need the original invoice from us in order to have your item repaired or exchanged by the manufacturer. Warranty varies by manufacturer, but typically warranties are valid for 1 year from purchase.

I would guess the other importers are similar. The device is covered under warranty, but needs to be shipped back to the importer you purchased from and from there back to Samsung UK. At least thats the impression I get, could be wrong.

I believe Samsung does not have international warranty atleast for this phone. If it was released in a particular country, you need to send ti to their repair center in that country for service.
If you buy it from expansys-usa, then you send the phone to them and they will send it to samsung uk for repairs.
warranty is what is definitely keeping me on the sidelines.
i'll wait for the release of the verizon version first and see if any announcements are made regarding a GSM release in the US.
Most likely i'll end up ordering sometime next week.
i hope BB sells the GSM unlocked version soon. i'd rather go through them.
Samsung's policy on grey market electronics is very strict and clear. In order to receive warranty repairs on a covered device it must be:
1) Purchased in its country of intended sale.
2) Purchased from an authorized Samsung reseller.
No international GN purchased in the U.S. has a warranty no matter what the reseller tells you. That includes Negri and Expansys-USA. However, both Negri and Expansys will ship the phone overseas to one of their international affiliates for service on behalf of their U.S. customers. The GSM GN is not sold in the U.S. and, if it is, it's considered by Samsung to be a grey market device. Anyone buying from either Handtec or Clove are covered for two-years since the device would have been purchased in the UK even though it was imported to the U.S.
If an imported GN needs service, you have to ship it to a Samsung repair centre in the UK. Before warranty work is provided they'll ask for a receipt and/or credit card statement showing the purchase from an authorized reseller in GBP. They also maintain a database of serial numbers so they know which devices were sold through which resellers. They've denied claims on plenty of international SGS2's because the above conditions weren't met.
OP, Amazon and NewEgg are your least preferred options as the phone has no warranty what so ever. You can however get a SquareTrade warranty for it because they cover grey market devices. It's about $100 for two-years of coverage with ADH when they have a 30% sale going on.

Listen,amazon and newegg have something called international versions of gs2 and gs and nexus s with full international warranty,n I know for a fact that these warranties were honored internationally. And when amazon n newegg say international warranty,it basically means everywhere except US. That's fine by me,actually. Well,I mean I would prefer if US was included obviously...but I can do without it. Anyways, speculations aside,can any actual nexus owner provide details about his or her papers? Someone from Europe that purchased from handtec or clove? I asked both handtec n clove yesterday,waiting for an answer.

How many people have actually used their warranty? Seriously?
I mean, it's nice as a comforting thing, but in 10 years I have never needed a warranty.
Most things that go wrong aren't warranty issues anyway (dead battery, physical/water damage, etc).
It just seems like people are leveraging this as a reason not to buy.
Once you root, it's done with anyway (any warranty, that is).
I don't think you're done with warranty if you root. Or has anyone actually heard not getting support or service because of root? You can also always revert to stock, but I'm thinking if not to although I'm soon sending mine for inspection due to screen issues.
I was instructed by Samsung UK to contact local Samsung for support, but that can be because of all the neat customer rights things here in EU.

From the T&C of my warranties for my UK i9100 and G-Tab:
If the manufacturer refuses to honor their warranty because they consider your item grey market or not purchased from an authorized retailer, we will still cover you.
If your item is used, or doesn't have a US manufacturer's warranty of at least 90 days ("Other"), then the Service Agreement begins on the 61st day after item purchase and lasts for the number of years of coverage you specify at purchase time.
Also, after you purchase the warranty, you can send in your receipt for verification and to expedite claims processing. They accepted both my UK receipts without question.
You can view the full T&C on their website.

Huh? There's only one warranty. The one provided by Samsung which is based on the country of intended sale. Samsung doesn't sell the GSM GN in the U.S. Any reseller that's selling it here is importing it from overseas. That makes it grey market which means Samsung won't cover it. Samsung USA won't repair it because it's not a product sold here. Samsung UK won't repair it because the Amazon receipt shows it was purchased outside the UK, its intended country of sale. You'll notice that if Amazon is the merchant, all their imported phones say "no warranty." But go ahead, purchase other than from Expansys, Negri, or the UK and see what happens if you need service. A lot of SGS2 owners spun the wheel and learned the hard way.

as i said, theres something called international warranty that gives u warranty everywhere except US in amazon phones. esp galaxy s and s2. i dont know how that works. stupid dilemma. Then again, i dont want to buy the buy the phone then find out that it has a damaged screen/yellowish screen, non-responsive buttons and crap and have to live with that for the next 2 years. no sir. Ah well, my next assignment is in India in March, maybe I will buy it there, they provide full international warranty. But i so dont want to wait till March.

Thanks for your email. We cannot guarantee that the warranty is truly international. We do find in most cases that the service centres in different countries will accept the handset for repair, but not always. It does come with a 2 year UK warranty, but as you mentioned, this may not be suitable for yourself.

You're reading something made up by a third-party reseller listing on Amazon. The below link is for a SGS2 fulfilled by Amazon. You'll notice it says "no warranty" in the product title. There's no such thing as an "international warranty." The warranty is what's offered by Samsung which varies based on where the phone is sold.

I don't know what Samsung's warranty policy is for products sold in India. But you better check where an Indian purchased phone can be repaired otherwise, if it's the same policy as the rest of the world, that's where you'll be sending it should it need repair.
I know Samsung USA will not honor international devices however will they repair it for you for a charge if you send it to them?

Someone with an ISGS2 that needed a new display got all the way through the process to the point of it being received by the Samsung repair center in TX. When they got it, they sent it back. Samsung, more than any other manufacturer, does everything they can to make grey market imports distasteful. They are the only phone maker that belongs to AGMA.

I bought two Galaxy Nexus units and discovered that one has a defective speaker.
Anyone know if I can mail it directly to Samsung in the UK and they will mail it back to me here in Canada? I don't mind paying the postage to the UK and get it faster rather than having it forwarded to Samsung through unlocked-mobiles.

I used my warranty on both my Nexus One and Nexus S. I got a replacement N1 from HTC and a new PCBA in my NS from Samsung, both free of charge. Both phones were rooted but re-locked before sending them in.
So what's the consensus on the best option for US buyers? One of the official UK sellers? Canadian?

The SGS2's weak link is the way the USB port is mounted. It can come loose and get pushed up in to the phone. It happened to a couple of people. It's too early to tell if the GN has a common failing. For warranty work, you ship the phone to Samsung in the UK and they repair it and pay shipping back.

If you buy from Expansys-USA or Negri you ship the phone to them in the U.S. and they forward it on to their affiliates overseas for repair. It'll cost less for shipping but will take longer. The warranty is intact if you buy it from the UK.
As for Canada, that's a good question. The phone's not being sold directly there it's being offered via the carriers. If the carrier handles the repairs I don't know what happens when you're not a subscriber and don't have an account with them. I don't know if Samsung Canada will directly repair a carrier branded phone. If they will, Canada's a lot faster and cheaper if the phone needs repair.

$530 for GSM version directly from Amazon

I thought I share this. Amazon.com now has the Samsung i9250 Galaxy Nexus 16GB (Unlocked, GSM) Fulfilled by Amazon for $530 with free shipping. Their normal and very fair return policy applies. One may find it a few dollars cheaper elsewhere, but it is hard to go wrong with Amazon.
For comparison, Daily Steals (no customer service) had it for $535 only a couple weeks ago. Expansys has it for $570.
This is really tempting
I agree that it's totally worthwhile to buy direct from Amazon even if it's not the absolute cheapest price. Right now there are three different Fulfilled by Amazon sellers competing against one another, which makes me think prices may drop even more soon.
Has anyone tried to return a defective phone that they bought Fulfilled by Amazon? I would think they would handle that well, but I'd like to hear people's actual experiences.
Also, would these phones be under warranty? Presumably they were originally marketed overseas. Would that mean I have to deal with an overseas branch of Samsung, or would I be totally out of luck?
The Fulfilled by Amazon item I linked to uses Amazon's return policy. I didn't check the other ones. Returning even a non-defective phone should be no problem as I have done in the past.
If amazon somehow helped with the warranty like expansys does, I would get this immediately, but I imagine that its the same issue as before.

Source? I've called Samsung's international number, and was told that your receipt must show that the phone was purchased in the country that will handle warranty claims (which excludes the US).

Same here....they said warranty has to go through the phones intended country of use + you have to show receipt that it was purchased in that country.
All amazon offers over some of the other deals sites is that you'll probably be able to make a return if needed. But I doubt any warranty will be provided.

If you bought from a UK website and had it delivered here, would you be able to get warranty service via Samsung UK?
Handtec has the phone for 335 pounds, plus 15 pounds shipping to the US. According to Google, 350 pounds is currently worth $555. So you'd be essentially paying $25 for a UK warranty. To make this work, you'd also need a credit or debit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

I registered my GSM Galaxy Nexus just fine on samsung.com. When entering the serial numbers the manufacturing date shows up.

When I tried to register a Nexus, it gave me the Verizon one instead, not the GSM one.

Yep...the GSM model number isn't on the US site to begin with. Also entering a GSM serial comes up as invalid.

That doesn't include a defect out of box. And I haven't seen a US cellphone insurance company that would insure grey market devices or be able to replace a broken galaxy nexus.

Galaxy Note 7 Insurance - Which is best?

I'm on AT&T here in the United States and I have purchased the Unlocked Galaxy Note 7 Dual Sim International Version (HERE)
The seller stated that it has a 1-Year Samsung Warranty, as all Samsung devices should have. But, being how expensive this phone is and how the gorilla glass 5 is apparently a scratch magnet, I was considering purchasing not only a case, but a protection plan. Who has experience with 3rd party insurance and protection plans? Any recommendations or experience?
I only know of the following:
SamsungProtectionPlus (only if I purchase from a Samsung authorized retailer)
SquareTrade
Mobile Rhino
Though I've never personally used them, I've never heard bad things about Square Trade. I have several customers that have needed to use Square Trade and have always given positive feedback on them

I would go Square Trade too. I've never used them for claims but never felt like I would have an issue if I needed them. I did add this phone to my carrier insurance which is more expensive deductible wise but also covers loss and theft. Perhaps ATT has something similar?

I had Square trade for the note 4. When it was water damaged they told my they could only send it of to be fixed as they did not have any replacements. If it couldn't be fixed they would pay their determined amount. Not too bad overall but you could end up waiting a week or longer. Customer service is little hard to understand at times.
It took about 2 weeks to resolve my daughters claim.
That plan was 6.00 per mo with a 75.00 deductible
Also they DO NOT cover theft or loss

I just emailed their customer service and they told me that they do NOT cover international phones. I really loved their prices and philosophy on warranty service.
Try www.worthavegroup.com They are an independent insurance company, not one of the big guys, but I know they cover smart phones. They are big in the institutional world. They are the only ones we are allowed to use to cover our kids school assigned technology. (My kid has an iPad given to her by the school and if she breaks it we owe the school $600) It has a $0 deductible on the ipad, but the smartphones have a $50 deductible. Not too bad.
Several of the kids have shattered screens, and there have been no complaints that I have heard.

That was my dilemma. No insurer's want to cover international phone especially if they don't have manufacturers warranty. Even upsie said the same thing. Samsung won't honor your international warranty if your not in the country of origin of the phone. Order from B & H photo as they allow you to buy square trade at time of purchase

I had Liberty Mutual for my renter's and now Homeowner policy. They have a Computer Endorsement add on for $19 a year with a $50 deductible I believe. I've had to use it twice and my yearly rates didn't increase.

I was going to order from B&H but they don't have the DUOS dual sim version of the phone, so I had to order from the ebay link in my original post. The seller stated on the ebay posting that their phones do come with a 1-year Samsung Warranty, but they did not specify how to actually use that warranty.

Lol I was watching that listing. I think the seller is lying. I emailed them about the warranty specifics and how would Samsung honor it and they said they would get back to me with clarification. No reply for days. I emailed them again and they said there looking into it. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to warranty the device themselves. I just need the peace of mind so I'm going with B&H since they may be. More inclined to help me later since there an actual organization. Maybe they will get Duos model later not sure.

Protection Plus, through the phone app.
ProtectCell Mobile Protection from Fortegra.....I believe is only for USAA Members. I lost my S7 edge pay the $150 deductible and got my replacement phone in 2 business day.

They have so many positive reviews that I risked it and trusted them. They said I would get it by Friday and it turns out I won't have it until Monday. It's shipping from Singapore, so maybe they want us to ship the phone back to Singapore and then they would warranty it? I'm interested in that. It seems to me like the international version of the phone cannot be warrantied at all.

How the Samsung recall will affect those who imported / eBay'd

Starting this thread away from the other more general recall threads...
For those that bought their Galaxy Note's on eBay or imported a Duos model etc - how do they return to Samsung? Will they lose out on this?
I think this recall should envelop every phone no matter where it was purchased. The phone is still made by Samsung.
I believe in that case it will be the retailer's responsibility to handle the replacement (as a middleman for Samsung). I would think this to be the case as the local Samsung repair stores would probably only stock the variant corresponding to the country. Although I am only speculating. I've reached out to my retailer (swiftronics.ca) for more info and will post when I hear back.

I think Samsung will struggle to replace handsets that were purchased outside of their intended country.
Each countries Samsung division will only support handsets for that territory especially when specs can differ so widely between countries etc.
Now I hope im wrong for everyone who has done this but in my experience of working in retail (mobile phone and electronics) it's not likely and Samsung will just ask for you to contact the seller for details on what to do.

Nope, sobeonline1 from Miami. One time I bought a brand new seal z5 premium from them and it came with a galaxy s7 screen protector so it wasn't brand new and the screen was defected after 2 days so I probably not going to buy from them again

I also used tropical_mobile. I sent a message this morning asking if they had a procedure for the recall yet, but no response yet. Returning within 30 days may be the other option. They've been great to deal with, overall.
I'm hoping there will be a way they (or Samsung) can ship a replacement ASAP, and then we send back the recalled device once we have the new phone. Wishful thinking, I'm sure.

Chances are that you're correct, but if Samsung can't tell us which serial numbers are affected, then I obviously can't be 100% positive either (until it's on fire). If it was just a risk of bricking a $100 phone, then maybe I wouldn't bother. An $850 phone potentially incinerating itself... I'll take the recall.

Me too. They mailed me today:
battery issue claim on less then 20 phones over million units
it's it's 0.0002% chance.
and the battery issue happen because customer use Third party
USB Type C adapter and not the original Samsung.

Apart from having the math wrong (0.002% instead of 0.0002%), the speculation that it wouldnt happen on other devices (so the chances would increase) and stating unconfirmed facts, I'm a bit put off by how he is talking about 'weeks'.
Buying phones on ebay should be like buying phones from anywhere else, either web or brick and mortar. Ebay has a set of rules for return policy, and the seller has their rules too. You play by the rules. Those trust worthy sellers who want to keep their reputation would in fact work with their customers who have bought from them.
As for the buyer who wants to be protected, I hope you studied into your credit card benefits. Some credit cards have extended warranties and extended return policies in tack for their card holders. If you used a good card tied with your ebay and paypal account, you should be well protected.

it depends how the seller got said phone, if the seller bought from company A who bought the phone from Samsung to recall the device you are likely looking at having to return the device to the seller who would then have to go to Company A to get the replacement then send it back out to you.
however if the seller got these off the back of a truck or purchased from a company who purchased from a company who purchased from another company leading to a long line of people before you get back to the person why actually did the transaction with Samsung you are looking at way longer if it is even possible, this is the reason you should only ever buy from reputable sites as no matter how good an ebay seller is unless they are an extension of an online store you may as well be buying it off a bloke down the pub.

'a few weeks' = we'll tell you we're not doing anything for the recall after your return period has lapsed.
If that's how they're going to handle it, then they have a 100% chance of me returning my phone for a refund very soon.

Do you have a recommendation on a reputable site to import a N930F or N930FD from? I started off with from.ae, and they took forever to process then tried to send me a phone that wasn't factory sealed. Tropical had great feedback and a 30 day return window. Happy to entertain other options for this next round if you have suggestions!
unfortunately I don't know where to import to the US as I am based in the UK.
People who buy any Samsung product from an unauthorized reseller get no service, support, or warranty protection. All grey market phones aren't warrantied for that reason. You can't register a Samsung product obtained outside the U.S. in the U.S. because the model number and serial/IMEI number won't be recognized. So if someone with a Texas drivers license shows up at the Samsung Support Center in Houston with a phone from Hong Kong with no registration and no proof of purchase how should Samsung personnel react? What would they be able to replace a Hong Kong market phone with exactly? And why should they because it wasn't purchased from an authorized reseller in the first place?
Having said that these are obviously exceptional circumstances so perhaps they'll swap the battery out with a new one. But the logistics of this recall are going to be a nightmare for registered owners with phones needing replacement in their intended country of sale. So I'd imagine grey market phone owners will go to the back of the line. The loss of service and support is the number one reason for not buying a grey market Samsung phone as this situation proves. And I empathize with those now in a unknown situation regarding replacement of their phones but the situation they are in is one of their own creation.

Canadian Swiftronic import order/recall info

I thought it might be good to consolidate the info/correspondence regarding our Swiftronics Note 7 order and recall process. Post here if you ordered from Swiftronics and if you have any information to share. Should we need to fight for our return/recall, we can work together to ensure they adhere to the Canadian consumer safety laws (I've done a little reading on this).
Some info:
Swiftronics has been selling the Singapore (SG) international variant.
Last I talked to them they seemed to imply that they were exempt from the global recall, but they were awaiting word from their supplier.
They offer a 3 day return policy with a 10% restocking fee if the product is used or opened. They do cover return shipping if the device is deemed defective (this would probably be our means of getting a free return)
They have been quick to reply and generally friendly, so I encourage you to contact them yourself if you have any questions!
I will add my info later today after work.
I'm looking forward to seeing peoples experience with this company as well.

They expect an official replacement procedure for Canada in the next couple days. As to weather we qualify or if we will get and exchange for another F/FD model or a W8 model is still up in the air I guess.

I told the rep that the seller is taking the stance that the devices they are selling are not affected by the recall. They looked into it and offered to take my IMEI and open a case ID. I really think they're trying to cover all their bases here. Like I said, I don't think they'd like it if they had an affected unit malfunction and the customer had no way to take advantage of the recall.

Just an update. Swiftronics provided me with a return shipping label without any fuss and offered to send me a replacement when it becomes available. My phone arrives today so I suppose I'll walk in, accept the package, and then immediately send it off again with the new label .
Someone from Swiftronics called me today to respond to my emails about the recall. The gist of the conversation is that Samsung has done a poor job of informing sellers about the recall. The Samsung reps apparently have no idea what the plan is for recall of our imported international variants. It sounds like the seller is making a strong effort to get some useful information out of Samsung. I will be processing the refund as soon as I receive the device today. Overall I am very happy with their communication and they have been very pleasant to deal with. I hope the new stock comes in soon!
Had the same conversation with a rep there. I'll wait for their official response. They said they should get a call back from Samsung tomorrow. Until then I've registered my imei on the Canadian exchange URL.

Im local to them and bought my device in person...called in today and talked to the girl I dealt with when i picked my device on Aug 30th.
They will replace mine when they get new stock in...ill just go swap them out.

Does Swiftronics offer any type of warranty? Does that mean if you buy through them you're without a warranty?

They told me to my face one year warranty, it was the first thing i asked about before I bought it

Oh. When I contacted them online they tried to say there's was from Singapore and not part of the recall. Then said they don't have a warranty for international phones.

It is from singapore.
They know all devices have been recalled now and will replace mine when they get updated units in stock.
And of course there is warranty lol...its a new device...i was in the store and was told directly 1 year warranty which is standard pretty much.

I would not be so sure. Apparently it's common practice not to offer warranty on gray market phones. Their website loosely cites a warranty but seems to imply it only lasts 30 days. There is no formal policy listed on the site and that does not really inspire confidence.
They contacted me again today and sent me the imei checker link from the HK site (http://support-cn.samsung.com/note7checking/en.html). They claimed that based in my imei and that site my phone is not part of the recall. I'm not sure if I believe that site for phones outside of HK. There was however a user in the Canadian thread whose imei tested positive..
