is there an imessage comparable app? don't want to jumpship! - Note 7 Questions & Answers

Really digging the new Imessage that I've seen friends use, is there something that's comparable for us? help

what is special about imessage?

Free messages to iphone users.. that's special. you can use hangouts or Allo.

imessage and facetime are all i miss about ios.
Whatsapp kinda fills the void.

I've gotten everyone I know on Telegram. Clients exist for iOS/Android/Windows Phone/Tablet/iPad/OSX/Linux/Windows/Web (And probably more).

AIM (Aol iNSTANT mESSENGER) or IRC?

I would like to be able to see if read, have the option of facetiming I guess, gifs, stickers, embedded pictures, links, invisible ink, assistant etc within one app. My Samsung doesn't have that.
Allo/whatssup doesn't have all the features .
I love my droid and have never had an iphone but really loving the new imessage I saw on ios10.

I don't get what the rave is all about with iMessage. Dont all plans offer unlimited SMS & MMS? Or am I missing something?

Unlimited SMS is nice but when you have little to no service at the house or work you need a messanger.
iMessage is superior - but the issue for android is fragmentation. Google needs to implement a standard app across all devices that is both SMS/messanger that doesnt require "sign up". So even if manufacturers want to use their own sms app by default - users can still "iMessage" other android users without them going and downloading the same app and signing up, or having to ever open the app prior...I.e. WhatsApp.
iOS users would be more apt to download and use the app as they know they could message any android user. They would not have to play hot potato between apps to message different friends on android. Same goes for android to android.
Would be even better (probably wouldn't happen) if the app was default on ios as well, as they definitely would never be giving Google access to iMessage.

Still dun understand how much different is iMessage compared to whatsapp? I know you need to download whatsapp but who dun have whatsapp nowadays?

~80% of my friends & family are on ios, maybe two of them had WhatsApp. My android friends was a toss up between hangouts and WhatsApp.

EVERYTHING
the simplicity of being able to share your high quality pix and videos with a convenience of a text message..
Let's face it this is the deal breaker that apple has that samsung just can't break.. a lot of Apple fans are drawn to Android devices but without Imessage it makes them stay..
I hate claiming I have a better camera to a bunch of iPhone heads only to put a stake in my heart and " oh yeah prove it and send me a hq video " end of argument isheeps 3-android-2

Samsung ChatON!

Can't wait for this.
http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/08/29/v...ree-cross-platform-instant-messaging-service/
Samsung is jumping into the ring and coming out with their own messaging service, directly taking aim RIM’s BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and Apple’s iMessage. “ChatON” is free, global and “works across all major smartphone and feature phone platforms”, so including BlackBerry and iOS. ChatON will first come pre-installed on smartphones that run off Bada or Android platforms this October, but will be “available gradually across all major Smartphones, Tablets, notebook PCs and Samsung feature phones”. As to the features, Samsung states there will be 2 versions available. A basic feature of ChatON has group chat, image/video/music and location sharing. An enhanced version of ChatON gives a few additional options, such as interaction rank, ability to comment on a users profile and the option to send other users an animated message.

Looks good. I just don't like the name "ChatON"... Doesn't sound right.
Anyway, I will only use it if it becomes available in non Samsung phones (don't know that many people with Sammy phones).
oh wow!!!! this is good.... its like windows live messenger all over again!
What would be the use of yet another chat app? Especially now that both Facebook and Google have robust and well populated chat networks.

Personally i hate facebook and dont use it for chat, neither do any of my friends. Google talk is only for android. This works across all smartphones.
Although whether it will be better than Whatsapp remains to be seen
I agree Whatsapp is good let`s hope ChatON will be as good or even better.
Do we really need another IM client? I don't like whatsapp Gtalk works well for me.
What about Ebuddy XMS that everyone forgot? I also remember that Samsung included Palringo?? no one used it and is also forgotten. So... why will this succeed?
and Like @elkikin said the name isn't right, it doesn't sound good. I also don't like the profile page and that people can comment on it, it's trying to combine messaging and social network?
there also Kakatalk !
This seems pretty good there's a pr video and seems fine. But will it be too late, whatsapp has a good market and most my friends use it. Live Profile to me is a failure. Samsung need to make sure that all phones now come with this pre installed like berries have with BBM if it wants any chance. BBM will still remain the king of chat as it's simple and works fantastically well (ex BB user), in the UK anyway most teens are never off BBM including my sister for solely that reason she doesn't want to move to another phone!

I never used a BB but i know how the bum works. Someone has to make a replica of that or RIM has to release it to other phones (there was a rumor). Google has now something like Huddle (what also works fine) but not a lot of people use G+.
I think if google promotes Gtalk it will be used, everyone who uses android has Gtalk on it so there are users. Newer phones can even use video chat. even friends on iPhone use Gtalk.

RIM can make a killing by releasing BBM as a cross platform chat app. But it's the one thing that makes the blackberry a little unique.

I know if this happens you can declare the BB dead so many people want to switch to an android or iPhone but the only thing keeping them is the BBM.

Agreed. No matter how much you persuade one of the benefits of moving they'll always say but x y or z doesn't have bbm! Push email is widely available so that's not an issue unless the company require bes. Only QNX and how quickly Rim can implement a competitive phone os will keep them alive although the hardcore addicts won't mind whatever they have.

I figured out what's wrong with this app's name. "ChatOn" sounds like "shat on", which is not nice, no sir. No sir indeed. They'll have to change the name.
How about just "Samsung chat"?
We are having so many chat clients and it is getting redundant.
I hope we can get a universal chat client where every platform use them as default then we are good.

BBM runs in the background you dont have the option to "sign off" unless you uninstall bbm app.

This i didn't know. But even if android comes with something like that Iphone would never have something like it. Apple is gona release their own chat client and i don't think it would be available on BBM or Android same as the facetime.
So what i think their will never be a universal chat client and we always be using third party apps

Why are IM clients still terrible on WP7?

I thought Mango was suppose to bring full support for IM clients? Yet IM+ and WhatsApp are still awful. WhatsApp is such an incredible app on iOS and Android, using it on WP7 makes me cry literally on what monstrosity they've created. I get a toast notification for a new message, I click it and it takes a good 3-4 seconds for message window to open (why not instantly?) and it takes nearly 10-15 seconds for the new message to appear. It's the exact same behavior in IM+. It's very laggy and very choppy and a far cry from the general smoothness of Mango.
So can someone tell me why this is?
Developers are human beings prone to imperfection. Give it time, allow them to learn the ropes of this new platform and iron out the kinks.
The WhatsApp developers said they wanted the app to be available as soon as possible so they purposely made it barebones. They also promised several updates to make it on par with the other versions.
As for IM+ they haven't updated the app to Mango yet but it's coming.

i'm staying on IM+ cos miyota's messenger suck. but the new versions of IM+ has no more messenger support, and i doubt future updates will have it any time soon
so it's actually quite irrelevant to me cos
1. i lose messenger functionality if i update it
2. it is still quite laggy if i don't

I actually like having dedicated apps for IM, same for twitter. The only app I've stopped using is facebook because the implementation is quite complete in WP7.
I would say it's probably down to UI for me, I find IM+ easier to manage than the built-in messaging for whatever reason (same for twitter) but they really need to upgrade it to Mango.
Everything has gone downhill in the application scene after the mango... Didn't they released the so called APIs? So where are the new applications which were not possible to make before? Since mango all we saw were updates for 'fast app switching' which btw is not fst at all... And than we saw saw a dozen applications to pin a settings tile on front page... And than it just died. No new apps, no new games, everything in MP just died and came to a stall.
So much so far for the hyped API release..

Agreed. Not sure what more MS could do to entice developers. They will even write your code for you ffs. We need developers to show some initiative, or will we have to wait for Windows 8 & WP8 integration to get it?

How much faster could the app switching be lol
I say give it some time. I am expecting we'll soon see apps like the announced Skype, Tango, Spotify apps etc. Mango hasn't even reached 100% roll out yet. Perhaps too they're waiting till the Gen 2 phones launch in the US.
Just within the last few days apps like LastFM, iHeartRadio, Tunein Radioa and Vevo got background audio streaming, pinnable stations and yes fast app switching So I think the pace is fine in terms of current apps getting updated. New apps will come soon.
This is going off-topic now, but I can probably guess at why developers have been slow with updating their apps for Mango.
When Microsoft released the Mango tools, they told us (the developers) that once we updated our apps to Mango, then we wouldn't be able to update our NoDo apps. They changed that, but quite close to Mango release so there wasn't all that much time to get on and update.
It also takes time for developers to actually implement the new features and APIs into their programs.
Does the built-in live messenger functionalityi n the WP7 messaging app support "see when they are typing" yet? You know, the "..." visual that tells you the other person is typing a message? That's kind of the whole point of messaging over data rather than texting (like BBM and iMessage).
@Casey_boy that explains the slow pace of updates but not the lack of new apps.

This is why the heck...firstly, I'm using my outlook account which tied to Australia region for my main account. While,my main account which is the one with all my messenger buddy is tied to my US. Therefore, I can't use the outlook account for messenger. And I even tried the following steps:
1)my main account is created few years ago, and it is tied to US. However, until now I still unable to change the live ID or merge with my current Australia account.
2)M$ don't support messenger for secondary windows live account.
3)tried to move all my active messenger buddy to outlook account, but M$ don't allow me to use live messenger on this outlook account. It keep showing error and need me the fix the password.
4)not willing to create a new live messenger account as I have spent around 30dollars on apps.

For most people the point of instant messaging is simply that it doesn't use text/ sms messages, it uses your data plan.

your 'we have 33k app' rebuttal is like a toddler saying 'what game? i have rusty's poop to play with'..
here is my penny to keep you thinking and demand quality:
sms scheduler to automatically fire up and send sms on particular day and time.
call sms blocker.
dedicated agenda and appointment app. Pocket Informant.
a wallet app. code wallet pro.
last decent game which i didnt finish in a day was released on 5/18/11: plant vs zombies.
audio recorder to record incoming and outgoing calls automatically. resco audio recorder.
data monitor which records all ur wifi and data connection and gives a monthly/weekly/daily/yearly view. spb data monitor.
an app to collect total call duration peak/offpeak/weekends to warn when reaching calling plan limit. phone dashboard.

according to you the only apps developer can make with present API is to pin a tile and another RSS reader, combine it with flaslite and tip calculator and we have your 33K app you mentioned.

Most missed feature...

Here's the thing...I am planning on making my next phone either the new Nokia or the Focus S pretty much whichever releases first. I came from a 3gs and now have a Captivate and I want WP7 users to tell me the top things they miss from their previous OS...whether it be Android or IPhone. I am pretty much trying to figure out what I am going to be giving up in the switch to WP7. Thanks for any replies and no trolls please lol.
I think in general you'll be gaining a very trouble free, polished, and well integrated experience, while giving up more customization and a giant marketplace. i think coming from ios and android the biggest things you'll miss are your apps, if you were a big app user.
Notifications. WP doesn't show your notifications in one place like Android or even a popup like ios. You have to have the app pinned the home screen. If you have a lot of apps this could get annoying

Missed calls and messages are really the only important notifications I need. I do use gmail as my main email tho so will that cause any problems? Also how does bing maps compare to google maps? Nokia drive looks really nice if I go that route. What about any kind if visual voicemail? Any alternatives to google voice?

You see icons/numbers for missed calls, messages, emails on the lock screen and on the live tiles and there are notifications for all of them.
You can use GMail with the mail client (IMAP), also Google Calendar works fine. I am not sure about Bing Maps in the US but here in Austria it's useless. But there is a good (free) unofficial Google Maps app. Visual voicemail is only supported by some carriers.

abysmal support for instant messaging apps. That's my only gripe.
Words by post is the alternate. Its superior to words with friends imo

I came from WM6.5. I miss the bluetooth support. WP7 does not have SPP, so no external bluetooth devices will work, only bluetooth headsets etc. I can't use my bluetooth external GPS. Since my LG has a really poor GPS, this really bites.
Other than that, I really like the WP7 experience now that Mango is out.
Big issues for me compared to IOS.
- Lack of apps. The big ones like Facebook have been ported, but little ones (like language learning apps and dictionaries) - forget it.
- Lack of games. Always playing with my ipod touch, never play with my WP7 phone. Not enough good titles.
- No audio scrubbing in music player. Can't fast forward properly or jump around in tracks - makes it useless to for playing podcasts/audiobooks. Still have to use my ipod for listening to language CDs.
- Poor support for podcasts imported from Itunes. They appear in random order, also much prefer itunes to zune.
- No way to backup a WP7 phone. If you lose your phone or have to upgrade your firmware, wave goodbye to all your save data, settings and sms messages. You'll also have to manually re-install all of your apps.

There is just 1 keyboard with Windows Phone 7.
I used to use Swype with Windows Mobile.
The keyboard for Windows phone 7 does have autmatic corrections and word suggestions. It ends up being just as fast as swype.
I have a quantum, which also has a real physical keyboard, which is nice when typing a long email.
No issues with the on screen keyboard. It works very well.

Actually, podcast handling is one of the things I like in Windows Phone! I used to download podcasts using ITunes and using Zune to sync to the phone. There is an easier way.
Now I have the phone automatically download and manage the podcasts itself (without using a PC). The phone downloads podcasts automatically when it is plugged into power and connected to Wifi. I've set it to keep the last 5 episodes of each podcast - works great so far and less hassle than launching iTunes every day!

YouMail has an app called Magikmail that work as a Visual VM replacement unless AT&T gets its act together.
Bing Maps works very well for everything except a decent driving GPS, but a $5 app called Turn-by-Turn directions fixes that for me.
Missed calls and Messages- you'll have no problem at all with the very good notifications on the tiles for those, as well as the notifications on the lockscreen.
There are a few GV apps in the marketplace that work decently well.
Words with Friends alternatives- Alphajax and Words by Post
Other than that, I miss the LED notifications and being able to have a lastpass plugin for my browser. Overall, not really much that I miss from the other 2 options and a lot to like in WP7 over them.

Some good points here. I have only found 1-2 apps that I miss, but won't argue there are some things I'd like to have.
Haven't been upset by the audio issue- FF and REW work just fine for me. What am I missing that's so amazing?
Podcasts? No way- iTunes is horrible. Zune isn't that much better. Why use either? Just have the phone do it without needing to sync to either? Way past the iOS paradigm here.
Somewhat agree on the backup. Zune does do a backup when you do upgrades, but I think there's no way to do it otherwise. Annoying. And yes, until the Skydrive API is really more available, there aren't good methods for saving app data... but when it is, it'll be better than the other 2, assuming MS doesn't screw it up massively.
Well the Focus S coming out in two weeks pretty much answers which phone i'm getting. And this thread makes me realize i'm not giving up much of anything to leave Android, not to mention not having to flash a new ROM on my phone every week to keep up with the times lol
I think that the only things i miss from Android are...
•Tethering (new phones have it though, and possibly my HD7 via an update)
•TV Listings for Android (how is it that there is not a single app that can display all my US/Puerto Rico channel listings with shows and times? no... not a show tracker, i mean a full TV Guide)
•Adobe Flash (slow, buggy, laggy... but i could watch anything on the web )
•USB Mass storage (although i wonder why? come to think of it, i dont use it that much)
Still, the good FAR exceeds the bad here and my next phone will still be WP7 for sure!!! Titan or Focus S maybe (why TMO gets the crappy one???)

Google NEEDS to add facebook integration already!!!!!!!

No its not enough to use an "app" for it as they have limited functionality and running a custom rom just to get facebook integration is even more idiotic.
Its about time google realized google+ is never going to stop facebook domination just give it up already please, facebook is like youtube there is nothing else like it and wont be. Every other major platform including non-nexus android phones as well have native facebook contact integration now.
And dont tell me facebook is being ridiculous with their demands, you know when apple can man up and accept facebook domination as something that cant be ignored then why is google being a ***** about it?

no, facebook needs to comply with the APIs.
So you want Facebook contacts? Doesn't it already sync with your contacts. What's it missing. And Google shouldn't stop G+. The second businesses tuck there tails because there's a better product is when consumers suffer. Google is trying to make a good network. Use Google plus its actually very good. Facebook is about ads and making money. We are just not getting a native android app

I personally don't like having my Facebook contact numbers cluttering my phonebook so it isn't a deal breaker by any means. I'd rather they keep the stock Android experience as minimal as possible.

They complied with them in gingerbread and Google blocked com.facebook.katana in syncproviders.apk. So either way, Google will not allow it.

Having Facebook contacts sync with already existing contacts is a nice feature imho (G+ does this). I wouldn't want to sync all my FB contacts obviously.

facebook has nothing to do with google, youtube does. just because youre a heavy facebook user, thats youre choice. im a heavy g+ user, and dont even have the facebook app installed, nor would never want it installed on my device. deal with it instead of crying about it.

Lol!!!!!!!
If you want FB integration get an HTC phone. The nexus is pure Google....and there is nothing Google about FB.
Plus getting FB pics to sync is worthless since 90% of the people put pics of their cats up as a profile image...lol
It would be different if Google were asking for the moon, upgrading to the modern APIs should be child's play for facebook.
It doesn't affect me however, I don't even have an account on that lackluster ad platform.
You do understand the Facebook sync is ready to go right? They just need to make a native app with the appropriate api's. Am with Google on this one, if you don't make a native app (f*ck html5 apps) they should be able to sync.

As much as a phone revolves around being a social device a lot of us don't want social clutter on our phones, not to mention apple probably patented Facebook integration. In yo face in yo face!
...
So...why should Google make Facebook's app work?
The APIs have been around since ICS.

Yeah well, I go to a crap internet school, and even I knew the APIs that Facebook needs to use have been around since ICS and that the sync problem lies squarely on Facebook's shoulders.
So much for your 'legit' school.

Only with existing contacts, there is no way to export numbers from profiles. Like anyone who has given their number on their facebook profile, they will be automatically added to your phonebook even if you didnt have their number with native integration but not possible on a nexus phone. Nobody is talking about having ALL the facebook contacts in your phonebook only those with a number.
And I dont get pics of a few people because people can choose to block the app from interacting their profile. Dont know what that really means but thats what the app devs say and it holds true as I dont get pics for a few users.

Eff that. Not everyone uses facebook. Not everyone wants to use it on their phone.
Sent from my phone.
The galaxy S3 has fb integration its plain foolish to think that google isnt doing it because it obviously doesnt like facebook and is hiding around some stupid excuse.
And it does NOT matter if G+ is better because no one uses it. I didnt say google should retire G+ no but that they should stop thinking that they can bring down facebook and be friends with them.
What the hell is up with all the people here? So you dont like facebook? Fine a billion people do and most people who actually have a life no offense.
Android is all about having the "option" to use your phone the way you like it and what suits your way of things. Stop being so utterly defensive over this.

Google Allo- anyone use it?

Just wondering if there are users out there. At the moment I use Verizon's Message +
Until Google gets with the program and adds SMS support, nope. Not many people want to have two or more messaging apps. It's sad too, I would definitely use it if it supported SMS. I was one of the millions of people who downloaded it when it was released only to be disappointed, heavily. I think they'll port at least some of the functionality to Android Messages though. They've already added Gif and search support, and smart replies is apparently coming soon too. So, whatever. If they add assistant to AM I'll be plenty happy.

Yeah, last time I checked, I had like 3 friends that use it. Not enough by far for me to want to use it. Check out Android Messages. I personally like it the best out of all that I've tried. There's another thread on here somewhere with other messaging apps that people like.
Does it work with Wifi, because Messages+ works like Whats app on Wifi

Yeah it does. I personally love Allo. I was stuck on my iPhone for awhile because I loved iMessage but every since I've been using Allo it made the transition a lot easier.
Most of my friends use it so that's a plus. If none of my friends were on it then I probably wouldn't use it as much.

You and your friends are in a very small minority of Allo users. I have more friends that use Hangouts (just 1 lol) than Allo. As mentioned before, until it supports SMS, then no one in the U.S. has a reason to switch. And all other countries get more functionality from WhatsApp already so they wouldn't switch anyway. Allo is pretty much doomed to fail.
My wife has an iPhone, and I will never use one, so we use Allo. I like that it's cross platform
They need to add SMS fallback and make Allo the default messaging app (get rid of Android messages or put Allo features into Android messages). Once that's done, it will gain adoption. I think these days, it's foolish to have a messaging app optional to use. iMessage works because everyone on the iOS platform can use it immediately.

AND they don't have a choice. iOS doesn't allow any 3rd party apps to handle cellular based calls or text messages.

But making it the default (exactly like Chrome) would be a good thing, because 70% of people will use the default app because they simply don't know any better and don't care.
The other 30% care and can easily augment or switch apps, but adding SMS and making it at least the initial default would be the smart play. However, being the smart and obvious 'solution' to the whole ****show that is Android messaging pretty much decisively means Google won't even consider it.
Google voice basically has me locked to hangouts #shrugs
For all the good stuff they do for the OS in terms of usability, etc, i just don't get why they can't get their act together on a simple messaging app

It's because Google has given up on merging SMS with Allo and is betting on RCS technology to be the solution going forward. Too bad only Sprint has it and doesn't work between different carriers. Ugh!
Until I can use it for sms....it stays off my phone.

And it's the DUMBEST thing! I could definitely see if ALL of the US carriers (as well as a lot overseas of course) were planning on rolling out RCS within MONTHS of Allo's release, but no one but Sprint has even announced that they are working on it to my knowledge. Sooo, it's, hey, use our app and don't let it die for literally YEARS while we wait for carriers to adopt this new standard. We don't want to go backwards and use SMS... Brilliant
The team lead has left Allo (and Google I think), sooo, maybe the new person won't have their head up their @$$? Wishful thinking I'm sure.
It's such a shame, I would love to be able to use Allo.
It is useful for sharing videos and pictures to users on Sprint and at&t as they will not transmit die to those networks size limitations on mms.
And even on Verizon and TMobile which do not seem to have a limit on the size of pictures.
Allo allows you to send files as large 200mb. Telegram allows up to 1GB or 2GB per file.

I can send full size photos to people on TMobile and most people on Verizon. There has only been one person that I know on Verizon has trouble receiving mms from me.
