Spotify to WM!

http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/spotify-heading-to-tv-consoles-and-mobiles-590398
Spotify is set to launch a new toolkit this week, opening up its application programming interface (API) in order to encourage developers to build the service into a range of comms and entertainment devices such as mobiles, consoles and TVs.
Someone who arises?
This woud be AWSOME!
Please, anybody?!
Would love spotify in my mobile!
That would be a fantastic app for the Touch HD. If you check their homepage, they have been advertising for developers with Windows Mobile experience, presumably for exactly this reason.
I can't imagine iPhone users will ever see Spotify - it would kill sales through iTunes!
According to Swedish IDG they will focus on iPhone and phones based on Symbian. So I think it will take some time before we see this for the Windows Mobile platform. And it will also be premium service, which will cost a few bucks.
This is the article translated into English with Google Translate:
http://translate.google.com/transla...ir-en-betaltjanst&sl=sv&tl=en&history_state0=
please somebody develop this
PLEASE - Spotify is one of the best things i've seen in AGES - if someone could make this - I WOULD PAY MONIES!
I'm pretty sure Spotify won't allow any 3rd party applications to connect to their service. At least not if you don't have a premium account.
yep, premium customers are able to connect to spotify with unofficial clients.
I've created a survey for peeps to fill out, I'll then forward it onto the guys at Spotify for them to see the results. Hopefully there is enough interest to persuade them to develop one!!

I have been working on a Windows Mobile Spotify client called mySpot.
The first alpha version is complete and I have uploaded it to the forum today.

Android Market separation?

Hi,
If someone can explain this to me ...
I found out that there is separation on Android Market, user from certain countries cannot purchase certain apps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6046360&postcount=4
Why is that?
So, if I am in the UK, I can only purchase apps that are available ONLY for UK market?
I could not think any single reason of this kind of decision will help the customers and the developers.
Why is it not just ONE SINGLE Android Market for EVERYONE?
Well. Nobody really knows. Its very annoying. Its the same story here in Denmark. No paid apps on non-rootet phones with Market enabler.
HTC and google can not give us an answer to why or when paid apps will be availble for us.
Indeed, this is very annoying and I could not think any benefit of it.
I am just wondering, is there anything like this on iPhone? There is in WM, but I believe Microsoft decided to change that on WP7.
I hope Google will change this decission to make Android more attractive to software developers.
I suspect that the country filtering is present for several reasons.
1. Country specific applications. There is no need for an app that only applies to i.e. the UK to be displayed in Asia or in the US.
2. Copyright and trademark issues. Arrangements needs to be done in each country as laws are different.
3. Localization. I assume that Google does not want to add paid apps support in countries not yet fully localized to the local language. This was the case when Android was initially released. The G1 was released in the UK and in the US, and paid apps did not become avaliable until Android had been localized to for example German or French. Once the translations were complete, paid apps followed shortly after.
While Android is currently localized to several other languages, Norwegian included, these translations are far from complete, and needs some additional work.
Hopefully it should not take so long, but hey, who knows.
I will download the localization strings in a short while, and try to perfect them a bit more. After all, Android is open source.
Actually it does make sense for some application to be available in only one country. To give you an example, why would someone in the UK be interested in an application about traffic in Copenhagen? When a developer publishes his app he can chose to make it available for all countries or just for specific countries. Blackberry App World has something like this and I'm not 100% sure but I think the iphone also.
And what if you want go to Copenhagen?
Are free aps also separated or is it just payed ones?

Exactly! Also, I don't think copyright would have anything to do with it. AFAIK, it wouldn't matter which country you made your app available to. If it's copyrighted and you disctribute it, you're in trouble.
I can't imagine google getting involved in copyright issues for each and every app. Im pretty sure they would shift liability to the developer/provider in their terms and conditions.
Localisation exists for the following reasons.
1. Language. You can make 1 app that supports all languages, but if there is a lot of text this would cause the app to bloat with unnecessary stuff. simpler to make apps for each language/region.
2. Localisation. The dev may decide there is no point in his app being available outside his particular locale. The first App i noticed this with was to do with the American Presidential elections. Of course I can still see a lot of US specific Transport Apps here in the UK, because the dev has decided it would be worthwile people from other regions having them (holidaymakers for instance).
3. Payment. If you set up an app for worldwide distribution it is priced in your own local currency. If you price an App for a specific region it is priced in that regions currency. This means the price of an app will not fluctuate with exchange rates, which may make people more likely to buy.
I live in Denmark, and as i understand it, the reason why we cannot have the payed apps here are because Google and the telephone companies have not agreed about how the payment modells are to work.
-They both want to big a cut of the cake.
Heh, the funny thing is that Google owns Admob, and their own Adwords service. They essentially makes a lot of money regardless of whether the developer chooses to support it through ads or through direct sales.
I stumbled across this website last night which lists (what looks like) every app on the Android marketplace, along with a QR Code (3D Barcode).
http :// www . cyrket . com
Could this be a workaround to be able to get hold of applications not available in certain countries? It's just that I can't help but notice japanese titles on there with a Yen price next to them.
I've just ordered my Desire today, but have been trying to find out which apps are available - I'm a little annoyed you can't just browse them on the android marketplace website!
Usually the QR code is just for a marketplace search, if it isn't available in your location or phone then you still can't download it.
The only way to bypass this is direct purchase from the developer or downloading the apk to install with an apkinstaller.
Then why there is not any alternative market?
You know, just a website which developer can submit their app there ... accessible via special app from the phone ... do the transaction via web
Like download.com Or cydia for the iPhone?
Microsoft will do it (single unified app market place) with WP7, why not Google? Strange ...
Ah I see, bugger... That's a shame.
Surely it's down to the developer to make it a global rather than a regional app on publishing to the marketplace?

XDA Shared Push Notification Server - Any interest?

Hi everyone,
I'm currently developing an App that's about to hit the market (G:RSS). The next feature I want to add is push and tile notifications. The problem here is that I'll need to set up a server that regularly polls Google for every user of my app, checking for unread RSS counts, then pushes them out to the notification server.
As you can imagine, that's a lot of bandwidth. I'd like to toss out the idea and see if there are enough people interested in going in together on a Virtual Hosted Server who's specific purpose is to send push notifications for application developers here on XDA.
It would be a linux host, running PHP and MySQL, and I could set up SFTP accounts and a web management system for anyone interested in hosting their webservices there. I'm looking at a number of different hosts, all similar to Amazon's EC2 setup, though some as static VMs.
If you're interested, please post with what app you're developing and the volume of outbound requests to both the Microsoft Push Notification Server and external servers. If enough people respond, I'll put together a proposed budget for what it would take for us to get it up and running.
Any other suggestions are welcome, too, of course.
Thanks,
Ben
Just an FYI - Amazon ECS is offering a free "small" VM with new ECS customers - 750/hours a month. May be enough to get you started.
If you have MSDN / Technet or any of the Microsoft partner such as Webspark / BizSpark i believe MS offers free/cheap/VERY cheap Azure hosting.
personaly, i love the features of azure and the cost is really good considering the service level (and SLA). I currently have an azure extra small instance that costs 5 cents an hour but i also got 6 months of a free small instance through a webspark deal.
I guess my 2 cents is that MS has a TON of freebies if you sign up for webspark/bizspark or the technet or msdn options. I would recommend any wp7 developer take advantage of the products. Heck, even sign up for the Microsoft Partner network and pay the 350/year for 10 licenses of darn near every Microsoft product made and use the discounts from your partner program to get deals on azure/hosting/development tools. It pays for itself big time.. just too much to absorb I got 100 seats of exchange email through Office online and trying to get a few licenses for sharepoint so my phone will be fully integrated
** Edit: **
With that being said, i'll volunteer an Azure compute node with SQL azure access to get a few developers up and running. Can setup a paypal expense account to share any costs above and beyond what i get with my current service.

New Dev Tools! Coming May 2011!

Yay! As from mailed by: "[email protected]" (dev)

New Windows Phone Dev Tools for the next version of Windows Phone Available in May
Earlier this month at MIX we announced that we will release in May a new set of Windows Phone Developer Tools for the next version of Windows Phone. Developers can use the new tools to create the next-generation of Windows Phone apps and games, which will be faster, more capable, and more deeply integrated with the next version of Windows Phone.
The next version of Windows Phone will be available to consumers later this year and will introduce many features, such as multitasking, the best mobile Web experience with IE9 and HTML 5, support of real time communication and messaging, twitter integration with the People Hub, and a broader connectivity to Skydrive.
The new Developer Tools will allow you to write apps that make full use of multitasking via fast application switching and background agents; runtime and framework enhancements with over 1,500 new APIs and the support of Silverlight 4, access to new sensors, on-device SQL CE database, and Phone Contacts and Calendar stores; socket support to enable networking communication beyond HTTP; XNA/Silverlight Integration; and an improved Push Notification and Live Tile experience. The new Developer Tools will also include a new emulator will full support for accelerometer and GPS location data.
We are very excited about the opportunities the new release will create for developers, and we look forward to the next wave of innovation in apps and games.
For more details on the new features supported by the next version of Windows Phone and the new Developer Tools check out the MIX Webcasts!
Extended Marketplace Opportunities in the next version of Windows Phone
Also at MIX, we presented a comprehensive list of new features that will improve the Windows Phone Marketplace experience for both consumers and developers with the next version of Windows Phone.
For consumers, the new Windows Phone Marketplace experience will include an improved design with panes and more panoramas, a better search experience with autocomplete queries and search results grouped by app, music, or games sections. A new jump list and a soft-search button will make it easier to find installed apps on Windows phones. (fiinix: well, the leaked search button, that a guy by accident cam'ed (Link to post))
For developers, the new Windows Phone Marketplace experience will introduce new Beta and Private Distribution services and a more streamlined app submission flow. More details on the certification status of apps will be available in the App Lifecycle tab and an updated Dashboard will provide notifications and important performance indicators. Developers will also be able to perform more granular data analysis and filtering with the ability to export data from the download and payout reports to XML.
Finally, we will extend the reach of the Windows Phone Marketplace from 16 to 35 countries, increasing the market potential for your apps and games. The 19 new end-user countries are:
Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, India, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden and Taiwan. (fiinix: Yay! Netherlands and Sweden (My countries get Marketplace, no need to cross UK account anymore?))

Nice!
Chile will have full marketplace support now!
Can we imagine hackers May be port Mango on devices from the SDK tools release in May?
Thanks for the info
Will developers have access to mango beta at the same time ? I think it was mentioned in MIX 11 that there will be a beta version available for download.
I have asked the WP7 support via Twitter and they said nothing has been announced officially :-(
Anyhow I think there will be a beta version before the official, we just don't know when.

yeah saw that email. Nice cant wait to play with it.
What I dont understand is if you compile an app using these new apis will we be able to test it on a device and submit it to the marketplace or do we need seperate tools and compile for pre mango without those apis and post mango?
That will be a bit ****, certainly if there is no mango for devs so we cant test on real devices.

It will be the same as when devs were given access to the emulator before the RTM release of Windows Phone. Some developers will be given Mango to test on - just like some people received developer devices.
Most of us will not be able to test the changes on devices until Mango is released. Only high-profile clients and a limited number of developers will most likely have access to a Mango build.

highly doubt that rumor is true. Microsoft nl said dutch language support will come, this is why existing users bought wp7 they promised the support coming in april with nodo but it became mango. It would be stupid not to give them the native language support after promises and delays of approx 6 months (assumin mango in september). We will get our dutch language support, thats what I read and what I believe. It wont boost sales if they will treat their customers otherwise. Just a brainless rumor and I believe they even misquoted their french source (bad translation, causes a bunch of brainless panic). Certainly in our country and the other new language supported countries being multi-lingual is very important so those languages (the current plus the native) are essential.

Enterprise Edition VS Standard Consumer Edition?!

Hi Everybody,
can somebody tell me if i can use the Enterprise Edition in the same way like the Standard Consumer Edition?
There are not many information to be found in the world wide web regarding user experiencse
What I found out is that the Enterprise Editions...
...can remotely be preconfigured without unboxing it (guess that is will connect some servers at startup and checks for configuration data set) if i am a company IT Manager
...receives more frequently and long term security updates
...has special security software package (KNOX)
...available on the market for fixed time period
Does anybody know if it is possible to disable all the KNOX features and use it like a standard consumer??
Are there any limits or disatavantages for standard consumer?
Do i have to pay for the enterprise features after a certain period?
The model i have bought is SM-G980F/DS. Seems that Hardware is the same, but with a different "Enterprise"-Software Suite. But I am not sure if it is suitable for me if i am not an employee.
