Yet another topic about battery replacement... - Nexus 5 Accessories

Yup..that's it.
About 2/3 weeks ago i received a new battery to replace the old one on my nexus 5, that was only giving me about 2h of SOT. The battery is a standard 2300mA, brought on ebay. Right after the installation, the doubts started: the new battery does not have the wireless charging option. That was not said anywhere on the description, so the seller got a neutral feedback. Now, after some time, i come to the conclusion that the battery is as good as the old one: it only lasts for about 2h of SOT. So probably it's a fake battery...
So today i found ou this one: https://www.batteryupgrade.com/shop...rtmentProductId/61381272/shopGroupId/86483823
it says it is 2500mAh. Well, for the price it should be. Anyone care to comment if it is worth try it and spend the money on it or should i consider an original one from lgspares?
Regards.

First things first. Wireless charging is totally irrelavant with what battery you have inside. The coil is attached to the back plate, not the battery. If it is not charging wirelessly check your installation.
Secondly, ebay+batteries = fake. Also, anything more than 2300mAh = fake. These are the two steps you have to do to check if a battery is genuine:
a) Check the battery temp. If it always says 29c, then it is fake.
b) If it DOESN'T have LG printed on the back (or has sth else like Samsung TSDI), then it is fake.
Spareslg used to carry original batteries and I bought one myself about 1,5 years ago. I don't know if this is still the case now, although I don't see why they would change now. So your best bet would be them.

Hi.
Thanks for your input. However the wireless charging is on the battery itself. I did chech this by placing the older battery on top of my wireless charger and saw the ligthing charging indicador turn on.
What's on the back cover is the coil for the NFC.
As for the current battery, when i did found out that about the 29C it really is happening (with slight variations), even thought the battery says LG.
I've sent an e-mail to the website selling this new one. Let's see what they answer.
Enviado do meu Nexus 5 através de Tapatalk

No it is not. The coil is on the back cover. You probably didn't snap the center clip in place (the one above the S), so there is no contact with the leads.
I didn't quite catch what you mean with the battery.

He means the battery temperature is 29 (fake) even if the LG words are written in it.

Topic looks a bit rezzed but...
I got this battery http://www.ebay.com/itm/2500mah-3-8...991327?hash=item4afad7431f:g:LIMAAOSwZ8ZW3lAJ
On my second charge I got 4h55m SOT, but the average from charge #1 and #3 is about 4h10m.
Using NitrogenOS + Nitrogen Kernel (interactive, power saving, -5000uv)

I bought this battery www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00NCJMQXK/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8. It is OEM brand new. Easily gives me a full day on one charge with light usage. I can get around 4 hours of non stop gaming. It seams better than the original battery that cane with my phone. All for $9 usd shipped! Shipping was pretty fast too.

I'm going to be doing the mod for the 3k mAh battery,

Still waiting for the 3k mAh battery for the LG G2 to arrive, then I'll do the mod and update with results.

I did the mod with a spare G2 battery I got from a relative, but I don't think it really charged beyond 2300mah. The charging times were roughly the same as well as the SOT.
So in my opinion it is just a placebo.

Did you calibrate the battery? That would need to be done for the phone to create a new file for the battery to detect the increase in size.

Well i replaced my Nexus 5s bad 2300 mah battery with LG G2s Genuine new 3000 mah battery.
Only made 1 charge/discharge cycle. I played for 1 h 10 m not demanding game, Used chrome for 1 h 37 m, Used 4G Network for 30 m, Talked 20 m (playd 4-5 games for 4-5 minutes, some youtube, settings and this kind of staff)and it gave me 5 h SOT! And this with Custom rom Android 7 nitrogen (which is buggy!!!!) After 2-3 cycles of my new batter, stable ROM without issues and Voltage and frequency tweaks i think it will give me 6 h 30 m SOT. Which is fantastic for Nexus 5!

I really thinking about mod G2 battery into my Nexus 5.
I tried to order Genuine battery from the links that other people recommended.
Not surprisingly, one Amazon seller send me fake one.
Another one send looks like genuine but battery is manufactured in 2013 which is older than my original battery and, there are bunch of unknown black chemicals outside of the battery that I ordered.
Very tired to buy a genuine battery for Nexus 5. Seems like more easy to mod to install G2.

The one that I ordered is from 2013 but is a brand new unused battery. It is definetelt OEM as I have taken it apart. Before doing so I checked the temperature of the battery as wekk and it checks out there as well. I know they stopped manufacturing these batteries but not sure when. I personally would not be worried about the date of the battery but more so making sure it is OEM.

Well, back in September I bought a 'genuine LG' BL-T9 with tools from a Chinese seller on ebay for $9.
I literally went over it with a magnifying glass and it appears genuine. All the markings are correct, the temp varies, and the build quality is the same as the original.
In fact, the only way I could tell the 2 apart was the sticky residue on the back of the original and the mfg date (11/26/2013 & 07/08/2016).
I took a chance on getting a fake, and if I did it turned out to be a good fake, as SOT went from under 2hrs to slightly over 4 and standby time is almost 5 days compared to the 2.5 or so from the original.
I gambled the $9 and unless my Nexus does a Note 7, I did good.

Manufacturing date is important with Li-polymer batteries.
A 3-year-old unused battery will not last as long as a 3-month-old unused battery.
The 'new' 2013 battery may last longer than the used one in the phone, but it won't last as long as a 2015 battery would.
I'd sooner buy a decent generic 2015-2016 battery than a genuine LG battery made in 2013.

I have not had a single problem with mine. I play a lot of games on my phone and I have no problem getting between 4 to 6 hours of SOT with the battery that I purchased from Amazon. After reading posts online my SOT is what other people are getting with their genuine batteries as well. So I don't see it degrading that much. Of it did it was a very tiny amount which I am fine with for what it cost. I believe it was like $8 shipped. I posted a link to it earlier in this thread or the other battery thread not sure which. I have also been using the battery for around 2 months now maybe s little longer with no degrade in SOT.

I’ve bought a new battery from AliExpress. Date on the battery is June 2016 (I assume it’s manufacturing date).
Before I replace the battery, I want to test the current/original battery. Any suggestion which App I can use?
It would be great if there an app that keeps screen on from 100% charge and records how long screen was on before battery died. Once I have the result, I can run the same app after (/if I manage to) change the battery.
Any suggestion/advice will be highly appreciated.
Thanks guys,

Ampere is the app I use for measuring current & load.
IIRC, it doesn't keep a logfile, but it does help when it comes to determining output & charging current.
As for your other question, I really don't know which app to use, but if you do a search of the entirety of XDA, someone's probably coded one.
Though I personally wouldn't use such an app because the N5 gets pretty warm under heavy use anyway, and I'd rather not have it burst into flame unattended.
Also, the battery I posted earlier about here is still going strong.
It was either a genuine LG battery or a really good counterfeit.

Hi:
I ended up by buying an original battery from spares LG. So far, i'm very happy with the performance: i'm getting between 2h30m and 3h00 SOT, with 4G, wi-fi and Bluetooth allays on.

Will a new original Samsung battery improve battery life after 2 years?

I'm thinking of buying a new original 2100 battery to see if it improves battery life. Would it?
Anyone has tried this?
Thanks.

I haven't tried it yet since I'm hopefully getting a new phone soon but I do believe it would help, maybe an extra hour SOT because I know my battery was amazing back 2 years ago and now I get the same times you do if not worse.
After a year on mine I was only getting 1700mah, So now I get a new Anker 2200mah battery every 6 months because they are just as good as original but do last longer.
Theoretically yes! battery life should improve, as you will be having a new battery.
My battery is just over a year old and i get around a 1d12h worth of battery time and roughly 3.5 to 4 hours SOT.
I recently bought a Pisen 2100mah battery off the internet and for the same SOT i got more usage. maybe 1d 20h nearing the 2d use.
n.b; wifi is always on. i use 3G for like 30 mins during a day
from what I've heard, newer generations of batteries, like ones that ship with SGS3, should not be drained to 0% with phone shutting down. it was advised to charge at low percents like 1% to 5% while phone is still on

Of course it would and if you dont have problem with size and weight i recomend you to get samsung's 3000mhA battery. Why not getting a bigger battery
It depends how old the battery is though. All Li-ion batteries degrade over time, even if they aren't used. So if you get a 2 year old battery, that has been sitting on a shelf somewhere, it won't help as much as you'd hoped. Depending on the temperature and charge level it was stored at, it could have lost a lot of its capacity.
So the trick is to get a newly manufactured battery, which isn't so easy since most sellers don't write this information.

Since a bigger battery means the battery is thicker, the original back cover wouldn't fit, then you need to use a specific cover which would make your phone heavier.
Right now I am in this trouble,I got a Onite 4500mAh extended battery with a blue cover, hopefully it's a great product, shipping as listed and battery performs exactly as listed,I just don't like the cover,it made my phone looked heavier.I was wondering maybe I should choose a power bank and put back my OEM one on.

This is true. You also need to account for your usage. If you do a lot of activity that heats your battery up (games, navigation, etc.) Then even a shelf stored battery will help since heat is another Li-ion killer.
My S3 was 2 years old in May of this year. I have been having issues with the battery and charging. My USB charging port has the classic loose connection issue as does the headphone jack. I see the fix and YouTube videos to repair but have not yet done that. I last week got my new OEM Samsung battery and the external charging kit. I just upgraded to Kitkat 4.4.2 NDA8 despite being eligible for a new phone discount from Sprint. My S3 is a 32gb unit and I will not buy a S5 with only 16gb, no way no how.
The new battery is performing very well. It is so close on updating to 4.4.2 that I can not be certain that there were not issues with my rooted 4.1.2 build after so many months. For sure the new battery is lasting longer. I think it was worth the $42.03 spent on the charger and battery as my USB port is in question and I can always swap batteries and charge with the external charger.
My S3 has a new lease on life and I can wait for new tech before upgrading. xda developers forum - root - and the desire for liberty is a powerful combination.
why not try using wireless charging? the qi reciever + charger should not cost you mote than 35 bucks. and you can still use your current battery, battery cover, & nfc, unlike powermat.

A 2 year battery will definitely be worn-out. Depending on the charging cycle count, could be only a 20%,but maybe a 50 or 70%.
I bought a Zerolemon 7000mAh battery few months a go, I'm usually getting 4-5 days on normal usage, and 11-13h of screen on.
Best bought I have ever made.

Extended battery upgrade

Hi there,
My stock battery is quite dreadful, I get about 1 or 2 hours screen on time. I don't think its capacity is anywhere near 1800mah.
I just ordered a new battery off eBay, claiming to be 2300mah. It is not the One X+ battery, which is 2100mah. This was only £4 so I'm aware this could be poor quality. Delivery is Thursday, I'll be sure to post my comments about how the battery performs.
I also ordered a battery case (2400 mah), which has a flip cover, cost £14. I'm prone to smashing phone screens otherwise I would have gone for the crazy 6000mah mugen case. Delivery on this is very slow but again I will post a mini review about it in here.

I was going to buy that exact battery. There was some guy on youtube used that battery and he said that it's quite good. Sadly the seller does not ship to my country. I ended up ordering this
So I just installed the battery. At one point just before I put the copper sheet back on I realised I re installed the old battery haha.
Phone has been charging for about half an hour, and the temperatures are not good. 45°C. It is not because the copper sheet wasn't placed properly, since I can feel the heat on the back of the phone. I guess that is due to the battery maybe being poor quality (high internal resistance?), since it was only £4.
Sometime tomorrow I comment on how long it lasts compared to the old battery. Previously I could get 2 hours MAX screen on time. I think it should really be about 5 hours now, with a 2300 mah battery.

Have you received your battery yet? I'm interested to see how it performs, I don't think anyone else in the forums has got one.
After using this new 2300 mah battery for 2/3 days, I am still very disappointed with battery life. Battery life is still exactly the same, I get about 2 hours screen on if I'm conservative. I may try CM11 later to see if battery life improves. I am doubtful it will though, since it did not improve battery life with the old battery.
Going to run 'Nova Battery Test' tonight and will post results. Also have some screenshots incoming.

The seller said that I would receive it in 3 weeks time. A lot of waiting. And if I receive it, I would wait until I'm done with the exams before changing the battery. Maybe at the end of June. Haha. But the guy from youtube said that he got a large improvement using the battery now.
So today I've been quite impressed by battery performance. I got 3 and a half hours screen on time! Nearly double what I had with the old battery. This is still not enough to get me through a day (battery came off charge at 4:30, died at 11:30) but I am still pleased. Hopefully can achieve this performance consistently!
Battery performance is now poor again, 90 minutes screen on time. I don't know how I got 3 hours screen on before. Seems it was a one off? I am now saving for a new phone.
How's the battery holding up? I just got my battery replaced after two years from HTC repair centre and it seems to be as new. Got the same old 1800mah battery. I'll post screen shots after the battery has depleted to 5%

hi buddy check my last post in this thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096459&page=22
overall the phone is as good as new... i am getting an average screen on time of around 3hrs and 15mins.. this may sound less, however i spend atleast 7-8hrs listening to music hence the screen time is less in my case. but if i reduce my music usage then the max i have got is 3 hrs 40 mins... pretty impressive imo... i might use it for another 6 months or so before upgrading,,,,

Yeah unfortunately.
I recalibrated the battery using an app. I might install a different recovery and clear battery stats from there.
The battery case has helped a lot. I'll post a mini review later.

Battery replacement - experience so far

After becoming increasingly frustrated by poor battery performance, I decided to take the plunge and order a new battery from Amazon (UK) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00SHVIV96?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
After previously breaking the screen and damaging the USB socket / circuit board which required a new screen assembly+new ribbon cable the battery replacement was incredibly easy in comparison and took under 5 minutes.
The old battery had the date of 2013, October 24th, the new one date code 2015, February 14
With moderate usage i was getting about 12 hours battery with screen on time of around 1 hr 30 ( GSam battery monitor ) with heavy usage this was significantly less.
with light usage I was returning from Work with about 40% left, which then took around 45 minutes to fully charge back again to 100% using a wireless charger.
Also recently the battery wasn't even charging on the official charger, instead it would drop about 2% per hour and charge very slowly with Bluetooth/wifi etc switched off.
The New battery came with 45% charge and its been on charge now for over an hour ( same as the old battery) and its only increased by 20% so it appears to be taking much longer to charge.
Mine will be delivered tomorrow morning. I have big hopes because i am also getting poor battery with 2h of SOT . Will report my experience
One of the things I know about Lithium batteries is that when they start to loose capacity they will charge quick - but also drain quick.
so far the charging appears to be taking forever - gained about 12% in the last hour. There are a lot of people who want fast charging however at the moment if slow charging=better battery then all the better.
One of the things ive missed with the nexus 5 is a replaceable battery ( that is one that you can swap while away - no tools required) and in place of that Ive been using a portable power pack with QI built in ( Rav power ) thats about the same size as the nexus 5, the nexus 5 in a case+the rav power QI charger both fit in a pocket and the nexus will charge from the QI charger whilst both are in a pocket.
Day 1 of usage, and im currently showing 15-20% extra charge remaining usually i would be at 40% ( give or take 5%) today at the same time i was at 63%
I notice my Nexus 5's battery charges rather quick. And been losing power fast as well. Maybe a new battery.
So, is it so hard to replace my battery?
Because somehow my phone is heat so quickly (even on lightly use like chatting and 9gagging)
And also, my phone is draining so fast (after i plug out, it takes under 5 minutes to go from 100 to 99)

So long as you have the right tools for the job, it's actually fairly easy going - IFixIt has a pretty handy guide for it.
Its actualy easier than the giude makes it look - if you dont have the tools then you can buy repair kits
the only tricky parts may the the bottom of the back cover where there may be a small amount of adhesive, and getting the old battery out - again as a result of a small amount of adhesive.
I would advise that you have something soft to place your nexus down on so you dont scratch the screen, something to keep the little screws in so they dont get lost, and a flat/clear area.
with a little bit of thought the nexus 5 could have been designed with a user replaceable battery .
As for usage not much to report yet, I've re-set Gsam battery ( only realised that it need to be re-set) and its currently reporting screen on of 2hr 21 battery life of 8hr 43 although this has only just been re-set so it may change.
Is there a recommended seller at amazon.com?
Don't want to be scammed.

Use a slow charger overnight or leave on the charge via computer USB port for whole night. Will help if you are doing fast charge all the time.
Changed mine couple days ago, i notice an increase in battery life compared to what i had before so i am happy. But i had difficulty taking out the old battery from the chassis, it was glued really fri*king hard. I hate adhesive

yeah i remember when i replaced my cracked screen some months ago, removing the battery was the hardest part because of the adhesive. not that it was hard to get out but i had to be gentle not to damage the battery. any way our device has great repairability comparing to other devices which can be a nightmare. now i'm waiting for this battery to arrive and this time ti will not be difficult to remove since i have done it once. i hope this battery turns out good, i've heard good reviews of it even though it's not the default lg battery and has slightly more capacity.
What is the date of the new batteries is everyone buying ? Someone is selling me a one with February 2014 date, it is new , but I think it is too old. What do you think ? My phone has one made I think in November 2013 (first batch n5).
Where are you guys getting the batteries? I'm having trouble trusting these sellers.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I purchased my battery from a company called ITSTEK via amazon, the same place where i purchased my replacement screen from.
The first screen was purchased from another seller, packed in bubble wrap and had been taken from another nexus 5 ( had damage marks where it had been removed)
the screen from ITSTEK was inside a sealed anti static bag with LG markings and Korean/Chinese (?) writing on.
As for battery life GSAM is now reporting battery life 15hrs 22 min ( was 12hours
Screen on 2hr 10 ( was 1hr 30)
while that may not sound great each time i check the app the figures are going up time goes by.

If it's been kept cool and 60%charged should be OK. I'd rather a genuine one like that than a new copy off ebay

Well i have received my polarcell battery and been using it for 3 days now. I have written my impressions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60795458

The real battery replacement and url avaliable

OK guys its time to know the truth when it comes to battery replacements, whether its a true genuine OEM LG battery or a FAKE genuine OEM lg battery.
recently i have purchased at least 2 replacement batteries for my 1 and half year old battery which holds still good charge but not as good in the days.
Although i live in Australia, this discussion still applies to all other countries around the world.
so i purchased my first battery, cost aud $18, apparently it was 100% genuine oem battery, bought it, however when it arrived the packaging seemed like a replica of the original with different font. so ull see the difference between the batteries below. as u can tell the metal connector, is different and is made out of a lower quality metal on the fake battery, the original battery has RU symbol and all of the BL-T9 ARE MADE BY SONY, YES I REPEAT SONY, THIS FAKE BATTERY HAS NOTHING BUT SCRATCHES ON ITS BACK,....fine i didn't mind, so i tested by charging, which was fine, took it of the charger and it discharged on its first charge from 100% to 80% in under 5 min, (and please don't say ITS MY USAGE, MATE 5 YEARS OF ANDROID EXPERIENCE AND BATTERY LIFE SETTINGS, ETC, MY ORIGINAL BATTERY WILL DISCHARGE FROM 100% TO 80% WITH MODERATE USAGE IN 1H, SO EVERY TIME IM ON 80% I ALWAYS GET 1H SOT, (NO-----LOLLIPOP---FOREVER---ON---NEXUS5---)
RUNNING CM11 M11, PA PICO GAPPS 4.4.4, SUPERSU 2.46, SYNC ON, LOCATION OFF, HALF BRIGHTNESS, SET LOCATION OFF ON EACH PRIVACY/PERMISSION APP SETTINGS, ON MY CURRENT ORIGINAL BATTERY ALWAYS GET 5 H SOT, NO DOUBT, HOWEVER WHEN I HAD THIS PHONE NEW, ALWAYS GET 6H SOT, VERY HAPPY WITH MY CURRENT SETUP, LOLLIPOP ON ALL ROMS, IF UR LUCKY ON MODERATE USAGE, MAX 3H SOT, SO BAD,,,,,
ANYWAY BACK TO DISCUSSION, so look at the differences below in the picture section, ive got urls to purchase the genuine original 100000% true battery with ru symbol and Sony symbol.
recently i purchased and looked very hard for batteries with this type of features and things which are seen on the original battery. found it, received it, same looks and features, original true genuine 10000% battery, very happy, u guys want links, i just need to test it and let u guys know.

Secondly, u have too cycle the battery, don't expect excellent battery on first charge, at least 6 full discharge cycles are needed to gain, refer to me, I'm an electronic engineer.

Sorry, i have no photos as i sent them back and yes i did cycle more than 6 times.....
This I my biggest complaint about the nexus, and about non-removable batteries. I don't care to have to take my phone apart to replace the battery, BUT if its "non-removable", I means the manufacture of the phone doesn't sell the battery directly to the public and finding a real one is a pain in the rear. I have bought and sent back 2 batteries because they were physically SMALLER, weighed less(on a gram scale) and lasted between 2 and 4 hours full to empty in standby mode. I bought one off amazon, the highest rated on I could find. The second a bought from ebay from the seller with the best rating I could find a at the time. I just ordered one from etrade supply and it will be here today, I will post my findings.
So, I don't care at all if a battery is "non-removable", I just wish LG/google or whoever would make the battery available to the public, so we could have a trusted source.
My fiancé needed a new battery for her galaxy s4, we just went onto Samsung's website and ordered one, directly from the manufacture and it is an EXCELLENT battery, just like having a brand new phone. That is a real reason to like a removable battery.
The battery I received from etrade supply was 100% a fake. Its physically smaller (about 1mm narrower), about 2 grams lighter, and all the print on the label is very fuzzy. I ask for a refund, we will see how it goes. I just wish there was a simple solution to finding a genuine battery!
This is the link I used to order it.
http://www.etradesupply.com/lg-nexus-5-battery.html
I laid my worn out OEM battery and the etrade supply battery and their side and staggered them so you can see the date codes. The 2013 battery is the OEM nexus 5 battery out of my nexus. The 2015 battery is the etrade supply battery. Both are flat on their sides against the table and you can see the etrade battery isn't as wide.

Cameron Sino Battery Works. 4h SOT

I just wanted to share my experience with a replacement battery for the Nexus 5. I bought a cameron sino brand battery and I am very happy with the results. I got 4 hours sot over 2 days, which is better than when the phone was new. I am running unofficial LineageOS 15.1. With a bit less YouTube and candycrush I think I could easily get 4.5-5 hours.
I am still having a bit of a calibration issue. You can see the battery level actually goes up towards the end even though it was not charging.

Hi, how are you getting on with this battery, it's been a few weeks since your post, are you still happy with it?
Thanks
Yes the battery is still working well. I'm not a real heavy user so I only need to charge every other day. I only lose 2-3% over night.
But this battery is same 2300 mah capacity, how is it better?
It's probably not, OP might have said so due to a different ROM (unless OP already had Nougat when he purchased the phone), or just blurry memory
I've had a similar experience with some random battery too, until I waited a month, now around an hour of YouTube nearly drains the battery completely. Let's wait some more
I bought this phone new when it came out so I was using a ~4.5 year old battery. I guess the sot could have been similar at one point, but I was struggling to get through a day before replacement. Now I'm getting two fulls days of use between charges.
It's a decent replacement option for people who do not want to get into battery modding.
