Hi guys,
I seem to have this problem where my nandroid backup from TWRP won't boot. I can only get it to boot after flashing the Rom over again after the store (this doesn't erase the data and all my file are still there, I just have to make sure I'm flashing the same Rom version as was part of the backup to avoid issues . But I was wondering if there is something else I should be doing here. I've used TWRP in the past and was just able to back up and restore no problem.
When I back up I make sure my system partition is mounted and I usually backup the default selections (boot/data/system, EFS) . My feeling is somehow the boot partition gets corrupted and won't allow the phone to continue booting, but I'm not sure why?
Any ideas? I'm using TWRP version 3.0.2-0. This happens when restoring nandroid for any rom (so far tried with oxygen/hydrogen/miui and cm14).

I have question regarding TWRP. I always had a phone with an external SD card. This will be my first phone with no external memory. When I install a new ROM I always wiped internal, factory reset and cleared cache. Now can't do that anymore cause that will wipe my internal card and lose my nandroid backup. What are you guys wiping right before you install a ROM?

Standard factory reset on TWRP will erase data, cache and Calvin cache without wiping internal SD card. That's what most people use.

I don't have any solution for you but I can certainly concur. I've seen this behaviour as well but not as consistently as what you are describing. About 1/3rd of the time my restores don't work as you mentioned and I have to dirty flash the rom to get it to boot. Sometimes the restore even errors out while restoring the System partition in which case I just dirty flash. This is like my 9th or so Android device since Samsung released the SGS1 in whatever year that was and this is the first phone I've ever had this problem with. On previous phones it would happen rarely but nothing like it does on the OP3.

You can either not wipe internal storage (that is what I do usually) or you can buy an OTG adapter. I think TWRP supports it for our device. You can always copy off your backups via USB then wipe internal then copy your backups back too I think.
Did you for once try wiping the complete device after backing up nans on external storage and thn trying restoring? That would make a difference

1.Copy your nandroid backup and other imp stuff to computer
2.boot into TWRP
3.wipe all partitions including internal storage
4.copy nandroid backup to phone
5.restore backup through TWRP
Did you mount system to restore backup?

OK. Have not tried this, why would this work and fix my problem? Do I only have to do it once and then all subsequent restores would be fine? Is it a problem with my TWRP? Phone?

its one time procedure. Subsequent restore will be fine.
May be different versions of TWRP will help you with this problem
is this issue had been resolved? because i have also the same problem.. whats the fix for this?

Hey man. No I never fixed it. Just flash your Rom over it and it should boot fine.

I am thinking right now?
Did a nandroid backup when I was completely happy with ROM (MIUI GingerBread).
After that I sat and played a lot of different apps widgets, etc.
Also downloaded a bunch of widgets and tested.
Then when I tried it finished I went into file manager and deleted the folders that I thought had something to do with the apps I tested.
But if I accidentally delete a folder that I should not have been removed, reset everything anyway when I reset my nadroid backup?
Are you asking if a nandroid restore will restore the data you deleted on your sd card? If so, the answer is no.

Or you can delete anything on the SD card and it will still be reset by nandroid backup?
Nadroids are stored on your sdcard at /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ (at least for me). Don't touch this folder. If you are unsure what to delete, nandroid and copy the entire SD to your computer.

depends what you mean by wipe everything, do you mean your data or your dalvik cache?
you can restore a nandroid back up with the dalvik cache in place, but that really depends why you're doing the restore as you might want to wipe and start a fresh.

Check SD card
/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ for ClockworkMOD recovery
/sdcard/nandroid for AmonRA recovery

You can wipe everything you want unless it states otherwise. If you are simply updating your ROM to a newer version, you may not need to do a full wipe. Just read the 1st and 2nd pages of the ROM forum for more information on that...
Nandroid does not back up or restore anything from sd storage, and your radio, recovery and hboot are also separate.

Except for an ext-partition of the sd-card, as far as any exists. At least amonra-recovery has this option, do not know as it is with the clockworkmod-recovery.
I encrypted my Galaxy W a few months back, and am now considering flashing a new ROM. I've looked into the process for other devices on this forum and am getting a bit confused by it!
Can I use CWM to wipe the phone as usual? I've used CWM to make a back-up of the phone to the SD card (which isn't encrypted). In the future can I restore this back-up?

which i know is you can decrypt your phone by performing a "factory data reset". That same as Wipe Data on CWM. The conclusion is you can use CWM to wipe your phone as usual. You can restore backup too, but dont forget to do Full Wipe before.
That's just my thoughts. I never encrypt my phone before.

i already tried to encrypt, but it always give me some errors.

I was thinking about it last night and decided that it should be possible to do this. The wipe is simply erasing the data, and it doesn't matter whether it was encrypted or not to do this.

CM9 rc6. I've tried it with some CM10 ROMS before and, like you said, got error messages. It took about an hour with my ROM and I haven't noticed any performance issues. If you want any more information about it, let me know.
I'd like to flash cloudy g3 but I'm not sure how to restore data into it, I have a nandroid backup with twrp, I used the preset backup and compressed the file on a sd card. Please help.

by restore data you mean to restore data from stock rom? I don't think that would be possible every time you flash a new rom you have to do a fully wipe, or you'll get a bootloop.
I mean as in all my app data and photos etc

you cannot restore any data from /data partition (a.k.a. app data, etc) because it will cause a bootloop if you're coming from another rom. Internal storage and external sdcard data can be restored if you have a backup on your computer. In fact it wouldn't even be wiped by twrp in the first place.

Internal memory won't be formatted. So your data will stay intact. For backuping and restoring apps you can use titanium backup. It would restore the data completely.

for some reason my stock backups from the virgin ndc do not boot after i use a lp or mm rom. im using twrp 3. Someone posted about the stock backups not restoring but no help in that thread. clean wipes do not work either.

Clean wipe means, also wipe internal storage. To boot a KitKat ROM or restore a backup after lp or mm, you must wipe everything except external sd. It's the way lp and mm encrypt the internal storage.

Are you sure you're wiping internal? Not just wipe data, format internal (data/media) storage. Do it twice if you have to. If you've definitely done that, then your backup is corrupt. Because once you wipe internal (and data and system) you've removed all traces of mm or lp. So the previous rom has nothing to do with FC. Are you trying to restore titanium backups of apps from mm onto kk? Don't.
Also, have you moved apps to external sd on any rom? If you have, and not properly removed that data, it can cause problems.

no the fcs happen right at boot. dont see how my backup is corrupted and yea ive wiped internal storage. not that much of a noob lol just new to this device. what i did was restored with ndc tar and then flashed twrp then booted back to stock to make sure everything is ok. Then make a backup then clean wipe again to install lp or mm roms then if i do another clean wipe and restore stock backup fcs on boot.
I made a backup of my 5x when it was running rooted/xposed 6.0.1 but then decided to update to 7.1.1 to try out the new features. But now I really miss a lot of xposed modules so I decided that I want to restore my 6.0.1 backup that I made a couple of weeks ago. So I flashed the 6.0.1 factory image from Google's developer website and was able to successfully boot into Marshmallow again. However after installing TWRP I tried restoring the backup (through USB OTG) after wiping system and cache and a doing factory reset but it pauses on "restoring system image" for a brief moment then proceeds to reboot by itself despite that it's only 27% complete. The reboot however does not go to completion and so the phone is stuck in a bootloop. I'm really not sure where the problem is here. Is it TWRP? Or the backup file? What can I do?

I used version 3.0.2-2.
And isn't EFS supposed to be backed up anyway? I just checked the backup folder and it contains 4 files that begin with "efs". Should I delete those and try again?
Format everything from TWRP except internal storage. Restore your backup without EFS. Next time you want to come back to another version just be sure that you also backup the vendor or you flash the vendor corresponding to the version you're restoring beforehand.

I made the backup while I was running 6.0.1 and I flashed the 6.0.1 factory image so they both should have the same vendor image.
I also tried wiping everything except for internal storage and I unchecked "EFS" when restoring the backup but the same problem still persists, the phone automatically reboots itself before the restoring is complete and gets stuck in a bootloop. I'm not sure where the problem is at this point. I guess I'll just have to start from scratch again
