Heating during charging - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Hi. I am using the bundled moto turbo charger with my phone and have noticed that the phone sides and back get hot mid-charge when charging and cools down when the battery is about 80% full. Is this a problem with my phone/charger or does it happen with you guys also.

Its cause of the Turbo charger

That's absolutely normal. Don't worry.

Yup happens to mine too. Heats up quite a bit and then cools down after a while

Clean your charging jack once with hot gun with paste.
Sent from my E10i using XDA Free mobile app

No need to be worried then as its common for everyone. Thanks.

It's completely normal, phones from ~2-3 years ago (before quick charging) didnt have this problem because they didnt have to dissipate the heat generated by forcing 15 (moto Z) to 25 (moto X) watts into the phone. Phones pre-quick charging only took in ~5-10 watts which is much easier for a phone to handle, although its also much slower. If you dont need to quick charge I would recommend using a normal power brick which will charge it slower, but also generate less heat. Some people think the heat can cause the battery to lose capacity quicker, while manufacturers say it doesnt. Honestly I dont know which is true so I cant say. I personally so far have charged over night on usb (~2.5 watts) and its done charging my phone and my moto mod by morning from <30% to 100%.

No need to worry, that's completely normal. The phone turbo charges until it hits the 80% mark, then the turbo stops and until 100% it charges normally, like any other phone, so it doesn't get hot. During the turbo charge it's normal that the phone heats, as it uses more power to charge faster, and from 80 to 100%, it begins to cool down, because it uses less power to complete the charge.

Normal

compared with x style
z play is nothing:laugh:

A potential work around
I realized that if you remove the back cover (style mod) while charging and keep the phone a little raised from the surface the extreme heat is not experienced.
You could try and confirm.

[Q] 100% to 95% battery

Hey guys. Within a minute or so after my phones removed from the charger it drops to 95%.is this normal?im using the 1.8a LG charger that comes with the phone F240L.i read somewhere that they are using the LG charger 1.2a out of the box.does this phone have two different out of the box charger..thanks..
Completly normal. The method that seems to be employed for the battery percentage is read the voltage itself and make a guess
This high voltage drops down quite quickly both as a "load" is applied to the battery,. Plus there is not a lot of change in capacity from the very high voltages to the more normal voltages, in any li-ion battery. So while the voltage can be used to guestimate a range of charge levels, between like 4.0 and 4.3 there isnt much changed in the battery itself.
Further from what i have seen so far (not totally sure) they are charging to 4.35v which is a rescent slight change in the chemistry of the li-ion to allow for higher charge levels without it gassing or reducing the life (Havent tested that theory long enough yet either).
Also All li-ion alogrythms for charging do a CC CV charge, where the final charge is just "holding" the voltage at the high, till the batterys charge state floats up to that level. This can (not facted out yet) mean that leaving it on the charge past the time it claims it is fully charged , it will put tiny bits more into it. This happens more with my big fat zerolemon battery because it seems to have more resistance to the other connected cell items than would be desired.
Anyways all is well, just dont believe anything a computer tells you , and it will be fine The other methods have thier own deficiencies.
Other STUFF:
Li-Ion batteries really do not prefer to be left at their high charge voltages, as they degrade faster there. so when you read the above, or try "bump" charging methods (thats just restarting the charge) It is not good for it. The battery will be happier, using it like it was designed, taking it off the charge when it states it is full. all of this being more info than anyone needs to know, or freaking care about.
As a li-ion battery becomes old and weak, it will exhibit even more of these charateristics that have people wondering. It will drop off the highs quicker still, have less total capacity, and increse a tiny bit in resistance , which will cause it to drop even more under load. At some point the battery would be so bad at that, you would want to replace it.
Heat, the li-ion cells dont like these extreeme heats. they prefer to work more at normal room temps and cold but not extreeme cold. So take that in also as a factor in keeping your battery more happy, again if you want to waste half your life pampering the thing

It's the calibration. Happens to me too sometime. Drops rather fast to 95%, then goes stable around 89%. Just leave it on charge for an extra 45 minutes or so, then let the battery die down to at-least 10% before charging again. Not exact science, it's just what I do.

Watch is always warm after removing from charger

Is this normal? Seems like it's not very efficient after reaching full charge.
Yes it's normal. Whether it's efficient or not....
It's normal for all qi wireless charging devices.

Yes, it's an inductive and some power is lost in heat.
- the warmth after charging is normal -and if the surroundings are hot, at a certain temperature, it will stop charging.
my watch couldn't go past 94% for 3 days....
and in another post in XDA I read that its due to overheat.
I charged it in my AC room and its good after that.
- the warmth after charging is normal -
my 360 also warm after removing charger, and in 10 mins it back to normal temperature

Anyone else having crazy heat problems when charging?

This phone is amazing, and I love it, but holy God it turns into an oven super quick when charging or using some intensive tasks like video calling or charging.
Don't know about the 10 (yet) but the area around the camera gets burning hot when I'm gaming on my OnePlus One.
What kind of temperatures are you getting? The hottest mine has every gotten while charging is 43 degrees celsius. I use the stock HTC quick charger and I don't use my phone while its charging.
My HTC 10 does not get any hotter than any other phone I have ever owned. And this is the FASTEST charging phone I have ever owned. Full charge in one hour in most situations.

If you are doing anything intensive when charging, all phones will get warm/hot. The HTC 10 will be particularly noticeable since the majority of the body is made of metal. The only way the that the heat from the CPU/GPU to escape is via the metallic body.
How to fix samsung galaxy pocket neo GT-S5310I (Bootloop)?
Mine is running at a normal temperature while charging...
I've recently got the HTC 10 and it does get warm when it's charging but not to the point of it being uncomfortable. And it cools down really fast too...

You aren't using the correct charger. There are other reports on XDA about this same issue.

Gets no hotter than my n6 m7 m8 and s7 get while charging
No problems with QC3 chargers, a regular 2A charger and charging via computer USB ports for me.
I've even gamed or used Navigation while charging with the QC3 chargers without heat issues (i.e., it gets warm but still not as much as my Nexus 6P or LG G2).
It might get a little warm if I'm using it (say Youtube) while charging, but when it is on it's own or just browsing the web or facebooking it does not get hot.
Is the heating problem very big issue

HTC 10 overcharging?

Hi. Please excuse my English. My HTC 10 remains warm as long as it is plugged in, that is, even several hours after the green led started to flash. All my previous phones aborted the charging process and cooled down after the battery was fully charged (Of course, I use the bundled charger). This is very concerning. Does it mean that the phone overcharges? I always turn my devices off before I plug them in and begin to charge them. Thanks.
I think this pretty normal. What means warm to you? 40degrees celsius on charger is normal for this device. It does not matter if you charge while turned off as the quickcharge technology works either way and will not quick charge after reaching 80% load. I recently read an article of someone who charged his 10 with an google pixel c charger ( usb c 5v, no quick charge). His 10 loaded normally until 100% but charging procedure did not stop and phone shut down after reaching 50degrees battery temp... maybe your charger is faulty!? How fast does it charge?
I can tell you that my phone tends to get warmer (keep in mind I said warmer, not hotter) when it is plugged in and I am doing stuff (Youtube, browsing, etc...). It will most likely keep warm unless you are not doing anything. I try to not charge my phone overnight since I usually get up to go to the bathroom or get water in the middle of the night, and since I only got like 2-3 hours of sleep left that's when I plug my phone in. You say you turn your phone off when your phone is charging so I'm unsure why it would get hot.
Clarifications
Thank you very much, xperia x root.
By "warm" I mean that the actual phone (not the charger) is above room temperature, unlike any of my previous phones, indicative of redundant electrical activity, which, to my fear, might be overcharging. This is why I wrote that I turn my device off before I charge it: it means that the phone does not consume power, and thus that there is no charging-discharging routine going on. I am yet to measure my phone's charging time.
There's really no need to turn off your phone every time you charge it. My phone gets slightly warmer when quick charging compared to using the regular charger from my previous M9. If you Google "overcharging cell phone", you'll find so many articles about how it's a myth because the phones are smart enough to know when to stop taking a charge when it's completely full.

Yeah i meant the phone too. This phone is always above room temp . Nothing to worry about. While Im typing here(chrome desktop modus) my device battety temp is 40degrees. While using phone during charging it even gets 46 degrees warm, before throttling very hard. I'll watch temp today when charging after reaching 100% and post my temp.

Thanks, xperia x root. When the phone is off, it should, eventually, reach room temperature. That's why I fear that my phone's warmth indicate overcharging. I completely understand that it is unnecessary to turn the phone off while charging, but if it is on, you just cannot know if the heat is due to overcharging, or some operation of the processor. This is why it would be most helpful if you would, only once, for the sake of our experiment, charge your HTC 10 today while it is turned off. And I think you shouldn't watch the temperature, but simply touch it with your hand and feel if it is in room temperature or not. And it would be very helpful if you examine the phone's warmth sometime after the green light is on -- one hour, for example -- to be sure that the phone had enough time to cool down. Thank you very much!

My HTC 10's charging time looks normal, on par with what you see and hear from other consumers and reviewers : it took 1:33 hr to reach 100% from 10%.

Overheating while charging on Wireless charger

Hi, I have Samsung Galaxy S20+ G985F/DS (Exynos). Few weeks ago I get a new company car, which has wireless Smartlink+ for android auto and apple car play. I was used to use cable, but few days ago I decided to bought wireless charger (Baseus Cobble 15W) to my car. Since then I have problem with overheating my phone when I am using wireless android auto and wirelessly charging it. I am using Spotify and Waze together and at same time I am charging it with wireless charger, but after few minutes (usually 5-10 minutes) it disconnets with error that my phone is too hot and it will continue charging after it will be colder. When I try to take a phone its damn hot. Is this normal behaviour or my phone is broken?
Running the battery hot will cause premature aging fast; stop doing it.
Software may be using a lot of cpu cycles; wayward apk(s).
Correct this if so.
It's not a good idea to charge and use the phone.
Get a fast charger for the car; you get about 2% per minute with a 25 watt one in fast charging mode between 40-65%.
A 25% charge should last 2 hours.
Li's love frequent partial midrange charge cycles and will get hundreds to thousands more full charge cycles when used like this. Partial fast charging does no harm as long as you keep the temp in the 80-99F range.
Try to avoid charging when under 80F and especially if near or below freezing temperatures.
Been using my 10+ like that for over a year, the battery is in very good condition to spite near all day use.

Well thank you for your answer, but I don't understand you well. Your post is very confusing. But from what I understand, you simply tell me, that I must buy normal wire charger and I must stop using wireless charger because using it is not good? But that is not answer that i want. Because I don't want to plug cable to phone, because when I have wireless android auto in my car, its useless. For example my colleague have car with built in wireless charger. And from what you told me, he can't use this built in charger because its bad?
You have two issues.
App(s) that are using excessive battery.
Charging while using.
Both are best avoided and both drive up the temperature.
Of course you can do what you want but battery longevity may take a hit in doing so.
Karma Firewall is useful for finding unnecessary bandwidth hogs and some of the battery hogs. Start with that.

Excellent point.
A damp rag can be used to reduce the temp.
Unless the charge port is broken wireless charging just doesn't seem like a good modility.
Even at high frequency and optimum primary/secondary winding gapping air core transformers are notoriously inefficient.
These batteries are power hungry critters...
Man, I know what you all are saying but imagine covering your phone with a damp rag when changing, imma die of laughter if I see that anywhere. I know it's gonna work but it's going to be funny af
Mine did the same thing, it was 5 days old when I saw it the first time. If you insist using your phone and charging it wirelessly disable the fast wireless charging option from the settings and you are going to be good to go, but don't expect the phone to charge that much, maybe 2% in 5min, something like that probably. It will not overheat, tested it myself. Be careful, if it continues to overheat even with fast wireless charging option disabled stop using the charger when using your phone. I have a suspicion I burned my coil like that, it only took 5 or so times where my phone said that it can't continue charging because too hot. I hope that wasn't the case.
