Likely not, but why bother. If this device gets traction there will be CM for it but I'm prety sure that won't happen before Xiaomi releases source code. I dearly hope they do that soon, as I've hastily order a Mi 5S yesterday. I hope I'll be able to flash some closer to AOSP ROM as soon as possible. I'm pretty sure I don't really want to use MIUI as my daily driver. I'll surely use it until something better comes along and after I get Google Apps on it.

If someone eventually puts together a CM rom for this device I will try it of course. I try all Roms for whatever device I am on.
That said, I admit that MIUI is not only classy looking, but offers enough customization options to satisfy any modder - my opinion of course.
I have unlocked the bootloader, installed twrp and the latest custom MIUI rom from here and rooted the device. I honestly don't feel like I'm missing anything with this device.
4gb ram, 128gb storage, Snapdragon 821! I easily get about 5.5 hrs sot.
I really like this device. I'm very satisfied.

Is there a Custom ROM for Huawei 7X/Mate SE?

Would like to use a clean version of Android instead of the EMUI version that is loaded on all their phones.
Seeing how these phones are identical, figured what would work for one would work with the other.
Thanks for giving me any insight.
Coming from the Galaxy Note 4 - hoping I'm not making a mistake with this phone that is enroute.

Guess you haven't bothered looking at the ROMs and development section. While alot of ROMs are not what I would deem "daily material", their is working going on to get ROMs on this device.

Here is a list of supported custom ROMs on Mate SE, Choose the A only ROM.

The whole custom ROM world has changed, Now you need to apply system.img instead of rom.zip using fastboot command.
I have the PHH-Treble installed on my Huawei Mate SE. here is the link.

In addition, I'd check out the Open Kirin site. I've read the Lineage version is outstanding and well tuned for the chip. They list the 7x as supported but I've read the Mate SE most certainly is also.

Coincidentally, just booted that ROM (on my SE) today. It's very very good, noticed a few minor glitches to do with the camera and navigation (will let them know about em).
I'll admit though, emui8 is growing on me It's certainly better than 5.1 was. Love to see the roms becoming available though. No doubt when updates stop (or before), they will be critical to have.

I don't mind emui except that the power-saver regularly kills tasker, ad-blocking vpns, etc. I've tried everything to exempt them from power saving but no go. The battery life is outstanding though (I usually only lose 15% after a full day's usage), so for average users it's a bonus.

Nothing terribly serious. I didn't use it for long, but the camera option for selfie shutter 'palm to camera' didn't work. Also the recently taken shots didn't show in the bottom gallery (I read this is fixed now). And the navigation arrows at the bottom seemed to not be persistent somehow (after a reboot this was okay).
It's easy to go back to stock, except if you haven't backed everything up, have to reconfigure, add / subtract apps etc.
I'd suggest searching for the openKirin website, they seem to be doing the most development. Also follow their directions, they worked for me and pretty easy.
Hi
How does one flash the "Openkirin_los_beta4" Iso to the Mate SE (BND-L34)? TWRP?? Fastboot??? what are the exact steps to not render it a paper weight again lol; Do you need Magisk-v16.0 to root it as well?

No, you don't need a custom bootloader.
You only need unlocked bootloader and unlocked frp.
TWRP is not supported on OpenKirin ROMs (especially on 7x twrp won't work).
You just need to flash the .img file through bootloader and then reboot to recovery and do a factory data reset.
Can anyone give me some advice: I have the Mate SE, currently on EMUI 8.0.0.332 (security update available but not installed), with TWRP and Magisk. I would love to install a custom ROM, but the OpenKirin site says TWRP isn't supported. Can I still install one of those builds and just expect no support if something goes wrong, or should I find some way to return to full stock before flashing? And if I need stock recovery, where can I find a download for it? I haven't had any luck on searching here yet.

Pretty much any GSI works so long as you have updated to EMUI 8 sometime in the past.

[FIRMWARE][Mi 5 only] Flashable zips - updated regularly

Down at the moment
Some info about requirements
7.5.4 Nougat-based
The true legendary solid one for some Nougat ROMs (especially WhyOrean's)
8.1.4 Nougat-based
Current minimal version for Cosmic
8.2.1 Nougat-based
Current minimal version for Omni
V9.5.2.0 Nougat-based
Seems to work fine on Nougat ROMs that won't work with 7.5.4 anymore
8.5.10 Oreo-based
Current minimal version for Lineage (LOS) /-based, AEX-mod, Dirty Unicorns (DU), Pixel Experience (PE), Resurrection Remix Darkness (RRD), DotOS, AOSiP
If you get an error7 in TWRP it means the firmware you flashed is too old for the ROM you wanted to install.
Please tell me in these cases and I'll update this post!
Also always remember to be on the latest TWRP version.
At the moment this is 3.2.1-1.

Thank you Phil, great initiative!
Just a suggestion for you to consider: I know it's extra work, but I think it could be a good idea to post a hash of each uploaded file for integrity validation after downloading (SHA1 or SHA256). What do you think?

Hey there, thanks for your feedback!
And thanks for the suggestion. If you can give me good reasons to do that, I will consider it, but I don't see which protection is offered by these hash files nowadays...
They won't prevent man-in-the-middle attacks, as the hash files can be manipulated as well - as I see it, it only makes things a little harder for both sides.
But what do you think? Do you really think this can help?
All the best!

I'm not so much thinking about MITM or other malicious attacks (even though that can happen too), but merely about a minimal safeguard for checking file integrity. For important things, I always check the file hash when it's made available by the download source.
It means no additional difficulty or effort for the downloading party (only those interested, like me, would check the hash against the one posted in the OP for each file), it's only an added step to generate and post the hash for the uploader party (ie., you ).
Of course, it's not a requirement or a high priority for these files, but it would be a nice touch, given how crucial and sensitive a thing it is. Just for reference, all official LineageOS downloads have their sha256 hashes posted and available.
Thanks for your response, and again, for your efforts and time in creating and maintaining this thread!

What's the difference between China-dev and Global-dev?
Hi there, thank you for maintain all of this. I recently updated form 14.1 to 15.1 using FW 8.4.19, but the battery is worse than before.
1) Is this because of the firmware or the LineageOs update?
2) And if it is the firmware what version, in your experience, has the best battery lifetime?
3) To get back to the old good battery lifetime, I am also willing to downgrade, but I cant remember which FW version I was on. But the new 9.5.2 seems to be promising or what do you think?
Thank you once more, this is a great place here

It's just the naming of the MIUI version these files are taken and modified from.
If you wanna know what's behind a new version before flashing you need to check out the changelogs on the official MIUI release site and think about what changes might be firmware related.

A ROM (generation!) update is way more likely to have a high impact on battery life than a firmware update.
Oreo sadly just suffers from very high mobile standby drain. This counts for every single Oreo ROM I was on so far...
If you wanna get better battery, see what happens when you turn off mobile data everytime you're using wlan. Will make an enormous difference.
Edit:
Also check in developer settings if "Mobile data always on" is deactivated.
Useless battery drainer that somehow is activated by default on some ROMs for reasons beyond my reasoning.
As long as I've been using Nougat ROMs and did have a little more insight to actual Nougat based firmware differences as I was doing testing for Xceed, I swore on the good old 7.5.4.
I would appreciate a feedback of how it goes with 9.5.2, if you should decide to roll back (which I believe will drastically bring back better battery life), but I'll re-upload 7.5.4 here later as well, so you can compare.
All the best!

Thank you phil, very interesting.
I have been looking around for a while, but I cant find any 14.1 nightlies any more. On the official LOS I can just find the 15.1 builds, the Nougat ROMs seem to be removed.
But maybe someone has still some stable version and can provide me a link? Or spot me the the correct download place?
I am defenitely keen to try the new 9.5.2 FW on Nougat. Would just be happy to get a good battery lifetime back.
Thank you

Custom Roms

Considering the Kernel source is already available, how soon could we expect a custom ROM like lineage OS to become available?
Maybe some months

Is it worth it??
Ive been using this phone with the global one and the only issue I found is the auto brightness. Sometimes the screen is too dark and is not so accurate tbh.
I would like maybe more battery duration but it seems fine (far from my ex phone, a huawei honor play) but in general terms the ROM works pretty good.
so, no kernel sources yet and therefore nobody is working on a custom rom.
are there plans to start so?

There was no global version neither release for the Mi 8 SE, things are quite different.
We just have to wait for Qualcomm 712 sources to be released, exactly the same as with the 855.
As stated on another thread, there is no point in waiting for a full ROM when device is Treble enabled.
FlokoROM is already working fine on Mi 9 SE, you can download Aonly GSI img from https://treble.andro.plus/ and flash it.
On top of that, it looks like someone is already reworking the kernel using CAF sources.
For some reference and a full ROM list, you can check https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble

Use debloated miui 11. Good roms are MIUI eu 11.0.11 and MiuiMix 11.0.11 (favorite). It's okay with stock kernel but I use agni kernel. Here's a page with many resources for curtana in one place but be careful before installing anything you haven't seen anyone using.
Curtana Premium
Almost forgot... You can use gcam for slightly more detailed photos than miui camera. There are numerous versions. Check out curtana photography in telegram. Personally I only use gcam for raw images. But for quick shots that you won't be doing pixel peeping on, stock camera is enough.
Hello ftriends, I'm a little confused, are all the ROMs on CurtanaGang valid for the international, European version of the phone? I am very interested in this. I have a new Redmi Note 9 pro bought in Romania. Thanks

That website is not known to a lot of people. Roms made for miatoll will work on your phone. Be careful to NEVER install a rom that's made for curtana only.
The roms listed usually have a support or discussion page linked so look for it. Information in the changelogs can also help you decide. Just make sure that you confirm a rom will work on your phone. The installation guide or the rom thread will usually tell which phone the rom is made for. Look for it and post questions there if possible.
Oh! You said you have a new phone... Don't do anything regarding flashing ROMs before you unlock the bootloader.

Oh! You said you have a new phone... Don't do anything regarding flashing ROMs before you unlock the bootloader.

Thank you @twistyplain for your detailed answer, I understood. For now my big-big problem is unlocking bootloader... I'm trying hard for three weeks without any result...everytime it saying "wait for 168 hours..." I know I must not sign out from Mi account, don't reset phone...etc... but nothing, same 168 hours to wait... I don't know what to do anymore... any advice is welcome! Thank you.

Thanks again @twistyplain, I know all these steps to unlock ... it doesn't work unlocked. My phone came with MIUI-11 but it was updated to MIUI-12. Probably because the SIM card is not activated on their server (server error ... etc) and is not activated after restart, reset (three times!). Maybe it will work with another SIM card...I'll try it...

I think that's the problem. You must make sure that the sim card to be activated is able to send an international SMS (Mandatory) and it should (maybe) be the active data sim. When you try to activate it make sure you're using mobile data using that Sim card to be safe. Also, try to activate it without another Sim installed.
My primary Sim card activated properly the first time but Sim 2 has never successfully activated. Every time I reboot it tries to activate Sim 2 but always fails. I just wait for it to fail and clear the error message because it affects nothing.

Use debloated miui 11. Good roms are MIUI eu 11.0.11 and MiuiMix 11.0.11 (favorite).

Hi there, so where can i found those?
I'm on the same train, i'm searching a debloated firmware for my new 9 pro.
From what i gather through forums and posts is that the Havoc-OS is the custom firmware+official with the less issues, unless those you mention are better.
I searched both rom subforums but i can't find them.
The closest i find is this which for some weird reason doesn't have as many posts as one could expect Lol
[ROM]-MiuiMiX_2.2.0_joyeuse-[Android 10 - MIUI 12]
I'm not involved in MiuiMiX team nor its development. I only love and would like to share this fantastic work. Hope you enjoy it. * Your warranty is... still valid? * * I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards, * thermonuclear...

Havoc is AOSP meaning it is based on vanilla Android (not miui). It has a large thread on xda so you can browse that to know about the rom. Official means that it's the one recognized by havoc os developers -- not that it's in any way affiliated with xiaomi. The AOSP rom that most people agree is better than most is Evolution X. However, better than other AOSP roms doesn't mean it's better than miui based ROMs. I always use roms based on stock hence the reason i recommend them. They're generally more stable and require much less effort to get going.
Regarding the source of MiuiMix, you can follow the telegram link in the thread you just posted just under "We follow also other devices, you can know more and update in our telegram channel". I won't repost the link because I'm not sure it's even allowed. When you get there search for your device codename. For instance mine is curtana so i just type #curtana in the search box snd i see a list of the roms released for my device.
Miui eu has a dedicated website so look for it.

Thank you for all the info!
Yeah, i think i will go the same root and use MiuiMix which is a stock based rom, that's why i asked where did you get the ones with miui 11 since i can't find them on sourceforge.(there is only a curtana 11.0.9)
I think i made up my mind and since i have joyeuse i will go with the MiuiMix miui 12 pointed in the thread linked above.

Good choice. Im using it right now. It seems to be a nice rom. Better than eu in ram management. Dark theme has some bugs but I don't use it because it has no energy saving for ips display.
Hi, i'm waiting for official Pixel Experince custom rom for the Redmi note 9 pro (joyeuse), I asked them on their twitter account they told me to wait, you can do the same it will convince them to do

I upgraded to MiuiMix 12.0.2 and it's been perfect for almost three weeks now. I don't use dark mode because it's the only bug i know to exist with this rom. And I can't blame the MiuiMix devs because it's a xiaomi fault.

I run the MIUI 12.0.2 by xiaomi.eu. It is perfectly stable and everything works. No other ROM could convince me so far. I really love Havoc OS but the comments indicate that there are still a few problems with Joyeuse.

is it better than official miui rom? I like eu rom but I mostly use google apps that's why I haven't moved yet!
i agree with @kennymaster. although i cant wait till the day i can get rid of MIUI, for the time being feel like i should still stick to the stock ROM considering the the issues. Havoc, RR had their share of users but still cant convince myself to jump the ship. little old now for this ROM hopping business maybe
Are their any changes in the last days/weeks? I'm also looking for a good working ROM. Mostly, i want to get rid of MIUI but in first, the most important is to get the most functions working without Bloatware and Ads.
After many years with Xiaomi phones and custom ROM's I have reverted to stock MIUI ROM - debloated with ....
XiaomiADBFastbootTools.jar
.... and find it the best compromise for battery life, optimisations, lack of bugs etc etc etc
Yeah thats what i done yesterday after the phone arrived -> i have set it up so minimal like it was possible, then debloated it but got after debloating maximal issues with camera, system freezes and unexpected restarts/shutdowns instead of just kill the mi browser, video and all that stuff

Thank you for the answer mate!
I'm amazed that the situation has not moved on at all since I first got this device over a year ago now I think?
So to be sure, is it still a bit dodgy to even just debloat the device as yet?

Honestly im surprised as well. I bought this phone so early assuming the attention it would get (and i have a track record of pumping out ROMs for my devices but regardless. Im certain there will eventually be bug free builds its the lack of interest and probably with all the other crap going on in the world XDA in general has been kind of slow so on that hand i shouldn't be surprised. Regardless
Il dont mean to come across in a bragging way so excuse me if it comes across like that because i barely consider myself a dev lmao but all my past devices i had dozens of separate threads with at least weekly releases (daily was killing me lol) so i was ready to give our device the same treatment! I just didn't think they were going to raise the specs to what they are now for a PC that can compile the builds
I think that the best Note 9S ROM is the AOSiP port, at least the Curtana version which I am using. I went through four or five of them in a month, starting with Lineage, and had various and sundry issues. Tried going to Resurrection and stuck in a bootloop even. Went to AOSiP and it Just Worked™. Fast and bug free in my experience, too. Rooted with Magisk, extensions to tame the usual (battery life, charging limitation, etc.) and it's my daily driver now.
I'm using Extended, it's a good ROM, stable and with good battery life. It have miui camera and a lot of customisations.
It's my daily ROM.
I tested PE, Havoc, but the best is Extended.

I think its becouse you are trying to open files without third party applications installed. When you trying to open video, for exaple, OS will search the memory to find applications that can open this video, if it does not find it, it opens it via a default application which is MiVideo but it is not there because it has been uninstalled, OS does not know what to do next so it repeats the script and again and again and so on, this is why the phone freezes or resets, so to fix it you need to install e.g. VLC and give it permission when you first time run that app (NOPE for Localization always!xD)
TL;TR: If you remove an application that is pre-installed then you need to install an alternative for that application.
In the picture you can see what's left of the preinstalled apps on my phone (they can't be removed or are not 100% safe to remove or simply I use them) and I've never had freezes and other such problems.
PS: I removed preinstalled Game Turbo its "com.xiaomi.glgm" and I downloaded (apkpure, fdroid, aurora) and installed it manually because I was afraid that the pre-installed one uses cleanmaster which I removed.
PS2: sry for my english
Do I understand correct that no one is posting links to the Roms they us, cause these roms are not on XDA forum?
Than where to look?
Sincerely
Julian
I'm using secret technique called "Google Jutsu It" and I can't tell how to do it. But I can tell you BlissRom looks good too
