Verizon vs International Sections - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

I am starting to do my research since i'm looking for a newer budget phone.. This Moto Z Play seems to be a great phone for my needs / wants.
I am getting confused because I know there is a Droid (verizon) version and an International version. Specifically when it relates to ROOT.
Does anyone know if XDA will split this forum into a Verizon and International Version? (I see this on most other phones / variants)
Thank you.

There is no reason for xda to split the international vs the droid version. The droid version will never get an official bootloader unlock and likely will not get an unofficial bootloader unlock. The only way to root the droid version is to use the dirty cow exploit which works on both versions. In the unlikely event that the droid version gets a bootloader unlock and rom support, roms may support both devices due to the hardware being the same aside from the radios. Even if they didnt it would be easy to tell which is which because devs would put [XT1635-01] for the droid version and [XT1635-02] for the international.

I have not tried it, but it is supposed to work with every android phone that has not recieved an ota for a couple weeks (even then it might still work). I dont have a link to anything and i dont know if xda would allow me to post or pm a link either, so you will have to use google. There is a github with a proof of concept that may or may not work.

Thanks! I sent a PM to @beaups to see if he knew more about it.. said it most likely wouldn't work since the /system is protected.. but he said even if it did work, it may not even be fully functioning root.. so i'm not getting my hopes up...
so right now i'm trying to prepare myself for the idea if i could live without root. lol :silly:

Life is much easier these days without root then it used to be in the froyo and gingerbread days, maybe even up through jelly bean.

perhaps.. I just get picky using my physical buttons all of the time. So I enjoyed either custom ROMs that had power menu button, screen shot, and sleep all baked in. Or use xposed to get those features using gravity box.
but I saw the moto z play lets you wake and sleep with fingerprint.. so thats a majority of what I like root for.. but want to get rid of bloatware.. make custom sounds.. etc...

If you use a 3rd party file explorer you can use your own sounds, it should give you an option when you try to change your notification or ringtone. You should be able to also add custom ringtones and notification sounds to the Ringtones and Notifications folders in /storage/emulated/0/ and it should show up in the regular menu. You can kinda get rid of bloatware by disabling it in app info, some apps wont let you disable them though (like google play services). I'm still on stock and have disabled all google services (except google play services which i denied all permissions to) and put on a 3rd party launcher.

The Andromadus Team is working on Jb from source, best posible way to expirience jellybean as it should be, follow there progress/releases here

Here it is guys jb for our beloved g2, this rom is based on the gnex jellybean leak that we saw couple days ago, right now rom is as useless as the word could posibly describe it, the rom boots just fine, but it seems the launcher does not like being render in software mode so it crashes non stop, i tried other launcher they dotn seem to work ether, im just posting this so maybe someone else can help me, to ether get launcher working in software mode or getting egl acceleration working, for this will we mostlikely need a 3.0 kernel.
Again bare in mind this is pretty much useless, and its not much fun to use, untill we solv the launcher issue, dont expect this to be a daily driver any time soon
Working:
Touchscreen forgot to mention this
It renders and reaches lockscreen thats about it, im sure i can fix more, but theres no point if we cant get the launcher working.
Not working

I want to say that aside from the fact that it's on the DZ (which is a phone I own and use), the best thing about this thread are the advertisements on the bottom of the uploadhouse.com website.

The thread proves that, unlike what a lot of people who knows little to nothing about programming say, JB can be ported to the G2 and it can boot.
First thing first. Stuffs come later.
@siulmagic: awesome at least it boots!
@siulmagic dont sell yourself short! It takes a lot to get something like this to boot! I am sure after a while someone will get something else to work. Like taz , he is a great porter!
lol i did not see those ads on the website, will upload somewere else, my bad haha.
I knew it was only a matter of time, n they said this wasn't possible? Sure there's issues and bugs but its still in the alpha stage.

I said "ASIDE FROM THE FACT". you misinterpreted.
I would have thought JB would have taken another year for anything to be on Desire Z.
I'm just learning these past 3 years and by no means unfamiliar with personal ports from other devices but took a look at doing something similar for my device for personal use and was humbled very quickly. It's the accomplishing of seemingly impossible tasks large well funded corporations don't bother tackling by one user who solves it on their free time that make me truly love open technology. Kudos. Keep it Up. Many Thanks!

CM-10 nav bar without root?

Hey guys,
I'm looking for a way to get the cm-10 nav bar without having to root.
I've tried just about every launcher out there and none of them have that
Option. On my SG2 I run liquid smooth ROM and its in there and basically
Let's me program it any config option of the nav bar. I want this on my note2 but
Without having to root as I need to keep WiFi calling and other reasons.
Anyone have ideas how to get this working .
Thx

Wow.
1) root does not effect wifi calling
2) no way to get nav bar without root.
3) all those nav bar options are built in the rom, no rom has that here. Best you can do is add a line to your build.prop and get tbe regular nav bar like on stock nexus devices

Wow what?
Its not like we have kernal for CM-10 so there's no reason for me to root. If im going to root then its going to be for cm-10. All the other Roms look fine but dont offer enough for me root and flash even with most of them based off of tmobiles kernal. I just cant stand tw and None of the stock rooted roms have the nav bar. Been on cm since 6 days, one gets use to that after awhile.
I was just hoping there was a hack on a launcher that I might have missed. Nothing that deserves a "wow" from you.

Lol you do realize you can root with out flashing a ROM right? Like already stated you can root and add a line to your build prop to enable the stock nav bar, that's about as good as it gets right now.
Sigh,, yes I'm fully aware that
1) I can root and stay stock
2) I will keep my wifi calling if going this route
This wasnt what I asked. All I wanted to know was if there was a launcher out there that i missed that enabled the abilty to have the nav bar without having to root. Man I don't think I could have worded it any better. I just have no need to root until we have cm-10. Even the hack I posted in the other thread doesnt really give the option to customize the bar like I can with liquid. So unless a dev comes up with a way to do this before we have cm10 there's not much else to say
Since its not in a launcher.

Wait, let me understand you correctly. You want a feature that you had to use a rom to get before, but you dont want to root? Did you load a rom without rooting on your older phone? And wow... hows coming off like a jerk working out for you?

...I'm not exactly following either, but anyway can I get that navbar you were using before? Is it an app? or zip I can flash in recovery? I just bought my note 2 yesterday but am really missing my onscreen navbar from my Galaxy Nexus.
Look all i asked for was if there was a launcher that had this ability that I may have missed. Pretty simple right? instead I get a "smart ass wow" etc about rooting etc and wifi calling. It wasnt what I asked and I tried to make it even more clear that until we get a kernal with cm10 that for me its not worth rooting cause none of the current roms have the nav bar.
I already know how to root, I know what roms support wifi calling etc, and I know that just rooting my note2 isnt going to kill my wifi calling. None of This was what I was asking. And I didnt need a smart ass wow comment on such a simple question. New launcher updates come out all the time so I reached out to my fellow xda'ers to see if there was such a option that I missed. Instead I get talked down to like a little boy and that is most differently not going to fly.
Maybe if you were on my end of the sleeve you would understand.
I'm No dev thats for sure, its not my skill set but I have been flashing since the G1 and HD2 days. I help out the devs via giving them a free place to host their roms that are high traffic or a guy thats just starting out for free. Then donate fare amounts to the ones of the roms I use. This is the way I help out here because those are the resources I have at hand.
If I came into your thread that you asked a simple question and was like "Wow your a moron" you would get alittle left of center as well.

Ok ill break it down for you. The reason I said wow is your original post sounded like you were wanting everything, did no research, and wanted to have others give you what you wanted on a silver platter. You asked about not rooting due to "keep wifi calling and other" reasons. Basically you sounded like a noob who expects devs to do the impossible/incredibly difficulty (in this case launcher devs) while it is certanly possible to do similar to what you want (think button savior) it is not something that would work well without root due to android permissions for certain button actions. If you would tell us why you are afraid of rooting that might help us help you also, since you now claim its not because of wifi calling.
So for onscreen buttons check out button savior, not exactly what you want but it is onscreen buttons.

Lol at this thread. I dont know if you figured it out yet, but here's the skinny. Nav bar, or softkeys is an android os feature, not a launcher feature. As far as I know, there isn't a way to install cm10 without root (at least, it doesnt install without root). P.S. We may never see an official cm10 kernal for Note 2 beause the cm team says that the Note 2 sources are crap and that they are being properly supported, it would take them too long to sift through it all. Now there is a way to enable the softkeys on the original rom, but it requires root, and the softkeys suck compared to cm10's nav bar. I'm currently runng PAndroid (a cm10 based rom) with nav bar and hardware keys disabled. I hope that helps.
And casperi, it sounds like we both got into this scene at the same time. I started off with my G1 when it first came out, then moved on to the HD2 years later. The difference is that I searched for that question before opening a new thread. And not only in T-mo Note 2 forums, but AT&T and across google as well. There are now a few different threads for what you are looking for.
Reiterating what others have said, unless it's an "artificial" navbar that the launcher or an app creates, it won't work without root.
If/when you decide to root, that line of code you add to your build.prop is:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
I've added it to my TW rom (jedix8), cuz it's convenient on this big phone to have access to a back button on both sides.

[MOD] Google Wallet

Flashing this zip should allow you to use the Google Wallet app on your Verizon HTC One.
Now, I've tried it on mine, and it works fine, but I'm on the NOS ROM, version 1.0.1 from newtoroot, so I don't know if it works on other ROMs, so if you want to give it a shot, make sure to make a backup through Clockwork or TWRP first.
Also, if it doesn't work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Wallet app.
If it doesn't work with other ROMs, then please upload your ORIGINAL build.prop, and I will do my best to keep up with making the changes and uploading the proper zips as quickly as possible.
The way this works is it just replaces the build.prop under the system folder with an edited version that allows the app to work by making it think it's a different phone that the app works with. So, if you have any issues because of the changed build.prop, let me know.

Google Wallet on VZW CDMA HTC One
You obviously got an HTC One day one, unlocked, and custom recovery. I was waiting to hear more about whether or not our CDMA version of the HTC One had the Secure Element inside it, like the Sprint One does, and unlike the GSM One.
This post leads me to believe there is a Secure Element inside the VZW One. You have installed it and verified it working at a PayPass merchant?
I know that I missed the boat for now on bootloader unlock, but this is the last bit of information I need before throwing my support behind the HTC One on Verizon.
Thanks for this thread and the zip, OP!
Strange, I flashed it, and it doesn't seem to work, Google wallet gives me an error when I open it . What's even more weird is that I Skyped with a friend immediately before and after I flashed it and after it gave me this strange hue, only affecting the front facing camera. When I restored, it went away. This is on stock rom debloated with gray the wolf's mod.

I was able to install it and everything on NOS 1.0.2, but I tried to use it today at a vending machine and was unsuccessful. My NFC credit card worked fine. It recognized the phone and everything but payment was unsuccessful.
I wonder if this means the Verizon HTC One lacks secure element for payments?

Unless the VZW One is different then the GSM variant's, then Wallet won't work. The only HTC that is confirmed to have a Secure Element is the Sprint HTC One. I'm guessing that the VZW One doesn't have an SE and will rely on the NFC sim card that works with ISIS mobile payments. This special sim card has the SE built into it and ISIS looks to it to initiate payments. Google Wallet is not coded to look for an SE on a sim card, and I doubt that will change anytime soon.
If anyone is interested, look into SimplyTapp. They are working on a cloud based Secure Element that won't require the SE to be on the phone, thus enabling NFC devices like the DNA and VZW One to use a mobile payment system.

Yeah, the camera issue happened to me too, I'm working on a fix for it though. As for it not working, it's possible that there is too much of a difference between the build.prop on stock compared to the NOS ROM that it just simply doesn't work on stock.

If you'd like, I'll try to make some time to edit it if you post it. If you want to try to do it yourself, just open up your build.prop, find the following values:
ro.product.model=
ro.product.name=
ro.product.device=
(these should all have something HTC related after the '=', I'm at work right now though and can't check to see what they are by default)
and change them to this:
ro.product.model=Galaxy Nexus
ro.product.name=yakju
ro.product.device=maguro
After doing this, save the edited build.prop to your SD card, because without S-off, it will get changed back after rebooting (unless the updated NOS ROM actually has system write support now, which I can't find out from any of the discussions, and don't want to flash it until all the bugs get worked out). After saving it, you'll need to put it into a flashable zip. If you don't have one, there's one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2418856
Make sure it's under the system folder; if it gets flashed to any other location, it won't work. Rezip, then flash away.

I haven't actually tried making any transactions on it, I just got the app working. Has anyone been able to make a successful purchase using this? If not, then it's kind of useless, and I apologize for wasting your time with it If it is working for some people, however, then can anyone tell me if they've been having the same issue with the camera as the first person I quoted? If it is working for some people, then I'll work on fixing it.

Not enough to Root

I just got the LG G3 and love it. The phone is awesome, but theres just not enough reason for me to root at the moment. I know its new but I'll wait for more roms and other features to come out. I would like more themes. I really don't want to DL a launcher. I used Themer but apparently it gives me some kind of not compatible because of the resolution, something like.
I thought the same thing, but ended up rooting my G3 anyway.
Small tweaks using G3 tweakbox were worth it, such as removing carrier IQ on lockscreen, adding dedicated menu buttons on the nav bar,
showing ram availability in recent apps menu, etc.

to each their own but I have never owned a phone and not take root. Just being able to freeze/uninstall unwanted apps, freezing updates and doing minor tweaks is enough reason besides loading custom recoveries and roms.
Takes time so I don't understand why even make the thread?
I root it solely for fixing memory card problem.

This. I will say that I was happy without root until the microlag got to me. The force close of my google services was the last straw. I now have no lag on my device and have made it much better imo with the tweaks mentioned earlier in this thread. I really wish we had an AOSP rom for it though.
SD card issue, g3 tweakbox, viper4android, xposed.
That hsould be enough for you to root

G3 tweakbox is awesome app, I did the paid version.... (also needs xposed framework to run), I guess i need to research whats goin on with SD card...I assume to be the ext-sd card. Not sure about viper4andriod....I D/L'd and asked about updating drivers and choices were not very intuitive. I'm happy to a have TWRP and TiBu up and running as well.
having a choice of root or not....really is a no-brainer if you want to do any thing to your smart phone, otherwise why have it?
There's a thread for everything, so I figure I make one to see if there are others on the same boat. Yes, I would love to root my phone but I'm going to wait for a bit. I would love to see more developers working on more roms to get that "wow" effect. I've always root as soon as I get a phone but I usually get a phone thats been out for a while and to see tons of roms. This is my first phone that I ever had thats only been released in only a week. So I'm excited to see what comes out from these developers.
I personally like to root right away for the simple fact if I screw up I'm still within the 14 day return policy

This seems like a thread better suited for AC. Isn't the community of XDA about rooting and customizing?

Don't know what AC stands for. Thats why I put this thread in the General section.
I also feel like there is no real need to root. For me, anyway. I rooted my s4 asap but for this one I finally feel like I don't have to root to enjoy it. Frankly I'm just not as interested in flashing **** like I used to.

I never understood threads like this every time a new phone cames out.. Okay so then don't root, next topic please
Rooting and freezing a lot of apps made my phone noticeably faster and last longer on a charge. So it's definitely worth it.

Is there a list somewhere of what's okay to remove from the tmobile version?

Worth it= unlock+root?

I know that it is possible to revert all the root, unlocking and so on. I'm just wondering about warranty.
I know what OnePlus says about it BUT! I am worried that if my device decides to suddenly break, OnePlus will see that my device has been rooted and I will have a harder time getting it through warranty even though warranty is not void by rooting.
I am not planning to do something seriously weird with my phone. Just want to try out a few popular kernels and roms. But the warranty situation scares me. Any thoughts?

Of Course i have done that but the answers are very formal and pasted. Just wanted to know if someone wanted to offer their thoughts about what is even possible from OnePlus point if view.
I haven't bothered yet... The stock ROM is fine. Not worth the effort and potential hassle to get a different colored battery icon or 0.5% faster benchmark scores...
Let me ax you... What features do you need Root for that cannot be had without it?
That will tell you whether you need to root or not...
yes it is worth it, u do not void ur warranty so there is no reason not to, once u root and unlock ur bootloader, install TWRP and make backup, u can then start to tinker and download many different apps like xposed to change things around, there are endless possibility with being rooted, also u can get updates quicker at times, and the people who whine and say their phone is not working or the update killed their phone, u just backup all ur apps with a backup app like titantium backup (pretty popular) then do a clean flash of the rom and u r good to go, u can remove system apps u don't use and use up battery, u can download custom kernels to adjust cpu speeds for better battery life, free apps with lucky patcher (i don't think i was supposed to mention that though), with xposed u can bypass the passcode and use fingerprint on start. Themeing different apps if u r into that. just so much to do, also there is no hassle like the guy above stated, u just download the toolkit and u r done in like 5 min.

Mostly for battery but also for gestures. Really like the gestures feature i have seen in RR, and maybe in more roms than RR? It also seems that arter97 cm ROM is well optimized both with his kernel, and ROM. I don't care about benchmarks. But the overall feel seems faster with that ROM according to XDA
I haven't done it myself either, since most of the reasons for which I unlock and install custom ROM and root are available (adblock, aggressive doze, oxygen OS customizations, etc)

That is so true! The stock OxygenOS is buttery smooth!
Yes.
Absolutely worth rooting (want a good backup?) and warranty cannot be voided because of rooting (http://bit.ly/2bsmV1T)
Oneplus has no problems with rooted phones as i did a warranty service for my OPO last year.
So yes it is worth rooting and unlocking to enjoy the freedom of what Android and OnePlus has to offer..!

For me, Xposed and EX Kernel Manger are the biggies. Of course you could install a kernel without using an app, but the app has OTA updates plus some other nice features.
So what kernel+rom is the best regarding smoothness and battery life compared to stock? I would also really like to know what roms have the gestures feature that the RR rom has. my goal by coming from iOS is to access apps as quickly as possible without having to go through folders and ****.
