Standby Drain Problem - can't find the reason - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hey guys,
i recently got a HTC 10 cause Ive dropped my Galaxy S7 in water. (insurance)
Besides that the HTC is noticeable faster, the standby drain drives me crazy.
HTC 10 @ Viper ROM with elementalX Kernel
1) What the hell is "BatteryServiceUpdateStats_3"? in 16 hours, it causes over 600 wakelocks per hour. Maybe this is my draining problem? In the Battery Historian screenshot you can see, that my phone is constantly doing something because of this process.
2) Why is there an "unknown" entry at "Kernel Wakeup Reasons"? 287 per hour... wtf?
3) In GSam you can see, that "Android OS (Kernel)" is (always) the top process...

Thankyou in advance, i can't find more tools to analyze this strange behaviour....
Edit: so i checked Battery Historian with active/inactive WiFi... and what do I see? Yep, much less wakeups from BatteryServiceUpdateStats3 & generally less Wakelock time..... why???

You might have this problem. I have it too and it's infuriating. I've pretty much stopped using WiFi unless I'm charging. Really spoiled my experience with this phone.

Do you have "ok google" hot word detection enabled? That was causing me some serious wakelocks, and I had forgotten I had enabled it to play with, it's usually not something I use or want. I'm still not sold on Google Home being a good thing because google knows everything there is to know about me. I'd rather some devices not know the pitch of my farts or where my girlfriend hides her phone when she has no pockets.
My battery life was still pretty decent though, amazing actually considering it was staying awake and always ready for my next command, but I know with it not running it will be much better.

You could have shown more infos from Battery Historian
If you wanna know what a proper Standby looks like, you can take a look at mine:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc...ark-thread-t3376159/post68929720#post68929720
but yeah.... there are a FEW known issues with HTC10 Standby....
A) 4g might cause more Batterydrain than 3G, but that was an early issue, and mainly on American Carriers.
B) WiFi does have shîtload of wakeups you cannot control. ExKernel has wlan_rx and wlan_ctrl divier options, set both to 8 (maximum) might help.
C) If you have Access to your router, maybe deactivating IPv6 can reduce WiFi Battery Drain.
To your 3 Questions.....
1)Already answered here:

Power Nap [Xposed Module] also blocks them. But it doesn't matter. Because they do not wake the phone, they happen when the phone gets awaken by something else.
Check this out (With Power Nap enabled and What's app excluded)
As you can see, almost no Userspace Wakelocks:
As always Google Services is the only thing you simply cannot shut up, no matter what
But yeah, the Problem is on the Kernel Level....
You see a Normal Wake due to an UserSpace Wakelock:
And one that's happening due to Kernel:
So as long as you have these Kernel wakes, the BatteryServiceUpdateStats_3 will activate at the same time. Batterylife itself is not really affected.

2) Wish i knew what these Unknown Wakeups are.... Wish i knew!
3) i don't really like GSAM, i prefer BetterBatteryStats.
What does the Battery Historian say about CPU usage by App?

Hi, did you find any solution? same thing is happening in my lenovo k6 power but only when i use jio sim. if i don't use sim there is no battery drain in standby. check my attached screenshot of battery historian.

Hi try to reinstall other kernel, im using CleanSlate v2.2.0 now so far superb. and also install htc bost to sure not eat so much RAM usage.
Last time using elemental kernel but im lazy to configure, therefore battery drain quite fast even in standby mod.

[Q] PowerManagerService wakelock

I am monitoring my battery through BetterBatteryStatus. I see that the PowerManagerService kernel wakelock is keeping my phone from going to sleep. It keeps the phone on for nearly 120 mins in a day. Any idea of what that could be? I suspect that it is due to the Smart Stay feature of Galaxy S3 and I just disabled it now.
I'm getting this on CM 10.1, so no power stay. Wondering what it is too though.
PowerManagerService is basically a catch-all for partial wakelocks (wakelocks requested by non system apps). To see which apps are actually requesting the wakelocks, go to the Partial Wakelocks screen.

Is there any way to drill down this service and detect what exactly is draining the battery?

Use Better Battery Stats. instead of looking at the Kernel Wakelocks, switch it to partial wakelocks, and if I understand correctly, the sum of the partial wakelocks is effectively the powermanagementservice wakelock
Just wanted to say that i too had a lot of partial wakelocks draining battery on my SGS3 CM11 (using ART) but I've managed to solve the problem via cleaning the cache in settings->storage. Since then, the CPU is awaken only 19% of time and my batt last 5/6 days with WiFi, Now etc.. (I have a 7000mh zerolemon)

Have you seen any benefits by switching to ART?
If I clean the cache, what will it delete? Will I lose all my App settings and game levels? I have about 54Mb in there.

I just tried clearing and a message came up saying "Security policy restricts clearing of this app's cache."
Is this normal? How can I find out which app is causing the problem?
I have a Samsung galaxy note 2 and every time I lock lock my phone it suddenly turns right back on. It's been happening for two days now. I've tried factory reset and hard reset.. nothing seems to work. Looked at several forums but none seem to help either. Use wake lock app and it says this ..see attachment
Same here with various audio partial wakelocks that add up to 12 days of kernel wakelocks. This started when I upgraded to:
gapps-kk-20140606 & cm-11-20140611-snapshot-m7-snapshot kernel 3.0101-cyanogenmod-g329d6a1 build03 #1
I have gmail sync disabled but contacts sync on. I notice CM have added apollo to the lockscreen so this could be a bug I need to search for

[Q] juice defender's extreme profile 10% battery after 10 hrs?

So I haven't got a chance to root yet, but i got juice defender on extreme profile and I got 10% battery left after 10 hrs and I haven't even used it that much. I remember before just using the free version I was getting more. I use wifi over mobile network when possible and I make sure wifi is off when leaving the house, but I was home all day. What is everyone else getting and any help? Here is a screen shot.

Obviously screen brightness is the most of it, but do you think thats accurate? I have it on auto? What should I put it on? How many hours are you guys getting with or without juice defender?
I average around 12hours with 2.5 to 3 hours of screen on time. That's without any kind of battery saver. I have 4g on all day, auto sync on, full brightness on all day. Usually leave my house at 2 to work and when I get out at around 11 I have around 60 to 70%.
Sent from Flip's S3
I get typically 3-4 hours of screen time, it seems like, but I'm not doing the most I could.
The total time really just depends on how long it was idle - I've gone over a day, but also used up battery much faster. I typically charge once a day, 16-ish hours from last charge.
I am thinking that you have some other apps running in the background that are polling for notifications. I am also betting that you are not getting very much Deep Sleep due to wakelocks. The only way to really tell is to use Betterbatterystats from the market, but that is a root app, so no joy there.
Only thing that I can offer is the simple approach. Check your Auto-Sync -is it synching all the time, do you have Maps/GoogleNow running all the time, Locations/GPS, Manage Apps>FC apps that you are not using, maybe take a look at your JuiceDefender preferences (I have used JD+ for years and love it-Don't use JDExt though), Lots of downloads/surfing (see Browser is up there on your list),...
Really without Root, it would be hard to diagnose what is "really" eating your battery.

Why not the extreme profile? Right now I have jd-ultimate and on extreme profile. No good? It basically has all my data off completely. Then I enabled the apps that I use in configuration. This then only allows data for these particular apps but only when I open these apps up for use. I appreciate the help and by no means second guessing you. I just dont understand why the jd plus not using extreme profile is better than jd ultimate using extreme profile. By the way I turned the brightness from auto to all the way down and it seems the battery is a lot better now, but I haven't used the phone as much as the other day so idk.
No, no you are fine. I don't think you are 2nd guessing me at all. I just don't use Extreme because I use the Customize option myself. Plus I have JD+ and not JDUlt. If you want more about my set up, go to my battery guide and post#4. It has my specific settings and how JD really works.
Also, just because you are not actively "using" the app, doesn't mean that it isn't running. If you say set up Twitter to poll for notifications every 15mins, well, that is a User Preference which will take priority over JD's Preferences and will open up your radios, thus causing battery drain.
My main point above was that you need to look at your background processes and see what is running. I am betting that you have some things that are running that you are not aware of and which can be shut down (i.e. media scanner, picasa,...) Get Betterbaterystats from my guide or the market and it will tell you what is running/eating your battery and also what is causing wakelocks and preventing Deep Sleep.
Betterbatterystats is really worth it, I have the apk from here, but plan on buying it next pay cheque.
It will tell you where your battery power is really going. It can be a bit to figure out for a noob, but I just Google things I wasn't sure about.
I think that controlling things myself is the most effective thing to do since I know what I really need I can Erma of functionality and where I can compromise.

Ridiculous batterylife

I've had the 10 for about a month now, moved from my M8 and the batterylife is terrible. I set up the 10 as a new device, downloaded my apps and moved across my SD card. Honestly my 2 and a half year old M8 got better batterylife, I mainly use chrome, youtube and poweramp, no/minimal 3D games, auto brightness about 1/3 up. The 10 is getting me about 2.5-3.5 hrs of screen on, that's absolutely atrocious for my uses, I've never had a device drain so quickly. My M8 by comparison used to get 4-5Hrs screen on until the android 5 and 6 updates hit. I turn off Bluetooth and GPS when not in use and greenify hasn't made a substantial difference either.
I would prefer not to root this phone for the sake of easier updates so kernels and roms are out of the question, any idea why the batterylife is so bad? What should I do to see what's draining the cell so fast? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Hi Ryan,
Have you optimised your battery? Setting - Power - Battery Optimisation. This helped me a little after struggling with poor battery life. I also run with power saving enabled and haven't noticed any performance issues. I can get around 24 hrs use with these settings enabled. My screen on time and most others is in the 3 hr to 3.5 hr range, and I wouldn't expect much more to be honest.
See how you go with these settings applied.
Download Gsam battery monitor to make sure an app isn't stopping your device dozing when idle as well.
Regards Dan

Thanks for the quick reply Dan,
Used to always use power saver mode on my M8 until HTC removed the option to use power saver without capping screen brightness and since the quick settings are set it's quite a hassle to constantly toggle when outdoors. I am using battery optimisation, I'll give gsam a go.

So whats the point in the whole "battery optimization" name? Should i also turn off gaming optimization in boost+?
First of all disable boost+, clean up ram will just make things worst, google the reason if you want to know why.
second, disable all unused app, service, there are quite a few come with the HTC10
third, install better battery status, look for alarm and wakelock, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 , remember to enable the permission is #4 post.
there quite a lot of app have too much wakelock and alarm, prevent the phone go to deep sleep, eg: techchurch app
you can also install some battery log to record the % drop vs time, I use this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.hwangti.batterylog
with all this above, I can keep using chrome, facebook, whatsapp with wifi, consume about 1% per 5~6 mins, If I just let it idle then it can last for more then 25hrs with light use.

battery optimization should not be disable unless you have problem with those app, it stop app running in background when you phone idle for a while. It does sometime consume more battery in android 5.0, but most of the bug fixed in 6.0. There are some document how it work in android.
boost+ "clean up" will just make battery worse, android (bettey say most OS, include windows, linux, IOS) will keep the app stay in ram so the app don't need to load again next time, thus save battery. app stay in ram will not use more battery, and as the above battery optimization will stop it after a while when idle. the only reason to manually stop/clean a app is when the app keep running abnormal, consume too much battery unexpected, such as keep making wakelock and alarm prevent the phone go to deep sleep. most of this app will just reload after you kill it, so boost+ "clean up ram" is not useful most of the time, uninstall such app or disable them is the solution.
gaming optimization reduce the resolution, actually it only can save very little battery, but for some game running in QHD is no different in FHD, so why not let the it "optimize"
How do you disable game optimization? I can't find it in my settings. Thanks!

Battery Saving mode not working as expected in stock OxygenOS

Hi,
I got my OnePlus 3 nearly 4 days back from the date of this post and I have been experiencing issues with the "Battery Saver" mode. When enabled, I still get all the notifications and from applications like WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. leading to battery drain issues and poor user experience.
Check attached screenshot for more details. I was in battery saving mode and still got a WhatsApp notification, and with 95% of charge and it shows me 4hrs of standby time.
Please guide me at the earliest if this is a problem with the device(H/W) or the operating system, so that I can ask for replacement if required.
Current OxygenOS version : 3.2.7
P.S. I moved on from Nexus 4 to OnePlus 3

Your OP3 likely is fine. You probably have an app not behaving well. I would try a wakelock detector or some battery savings tips posted in the forums. You could also try greenify and/or the kernel governor profiles listed in the news section. Some members have their device so well optimized they are getting 7-10 hours SOT. I am sure with a little more reading you will come across a solution that works for you.

I also moved from N4 to the OP3 and am loving it. I get 7+ hours of SOT.
You can do a factory reset and check. You can also calibrate the battery once by allowing the phone to reach 0% charge and shut down automatically. Then charge it to 100% while it is off and when fully charged, boot up the phone.
Most probably your issue should be solved.
Thanks for sharing,
I too loved my rooted Nexus 4.
And I think that I am getting a better battery backup on my new OnePlus 3 since past two days after using Greenify and by calibrating phone's battery(I was avoiding Greenify to benchmark this phones performance ).
What's still bugging me, is that after doing some comparison tests on other phones, when the "Battery Saver" mode is ON and I am on "mobile data" I still get application notifications on my device, which is in contrast to how other devices behave.
Behavior was similar when "Battery Saver" mode was ON and I was on "WiFi".
Devices on which I tried were OnePlus X, Moto X Play, Moto E3.
I have checked the battery optimization option, nothing there. I hope I am making sense !

Hi,
Thanks for sharing,
Yeah I am regular follower of XDA and used some nice optimization apps(greenify, wake detecter, leandroid, xposed, etc.) myself earlier on my rooted Nexus 4.
Whereas in my new OnePlus 3, what's bugging me is this :
After doing some comparison tests on other phones, when the "Battery Saver" mode is ON and I am on "mobile data" I still get application notifications on my device, which is in contrast to how other devices behave.

I am starting to believe that this should be a software bug and not hardware issue, but wanted to be sure and learn from the community here if they have faced something similar.
I have uninstalled some apps to get a better feel for this devices performance while its still in warranty.
I have also started using Greenify to get a better battery saving experience, which I was avoiding just to benchmark my device's performance.

Battery drains fast ( + screenshots)

Hi,
I noticed lately that my battery is draining fast. Like 1 percent for 50 minutes (In the best case) when the phone is on airplane mode and I don't touch it at all.
When I actually use the phone it goes down to like 2-3 minutes to 1 percent of battery.
I don't have root at all but used my PC to gain access for Wakelock Detector and as you can see in the pic I got 30 minutes of malwarebytes (I have the premium version with real time protection)
But usually Whatsapp is the one on the top with the most time on CPU
I have a few screenshots of Wakelock Detector in CPU, Wakeup triggers, and kernel wakelock. And almost a screenshot from AccuBattery app. I hope I can get to the solution with your help
Also I heard about AKT that you can get 7-14 screen time hours with it. Can I use it on my device? (of course after I root it)
Thanks in advance

But usually Whatsapp is the one on the top with the most time on CPU
I have a few screenshots of Wakelock Detector in CPU, Wakeup triggers, and kernel wakelock. And almost a screenshot from AccuBattery app. I hope I can get to the solution with your help

you should uninstall malwarebytes if you want battery drain to stop. malwarebytes is malware by itself
And then, you may want to tweak whatsapp, it consumes too much power

How can I tweak whatsapp?
Btw I noticed that when I close whatsapp my battery is pretty normal so I think whatsapp is the main cause. I got pretty good battery even when malwarebytes was on and whatsapp always seems to take most of the battery bt AccuBattery app.
So 50 minutes for 1% with apps running isn't bad... And I see you're connected to network with two bars on 4G is that LTE or HSPA variant like TMobile does? 2 bars is going to drain your battery because your modem is going to keep trying to get better signal.. none of your screen shots show you in airplane mode as well
I said that I tried to put the phone in airplane mode and even closed all no-system apps with greenify but even then the battery went down 1 percent every 50 minutes.
Btw can resetting the device can work?
If I will choose reset it I will unlock the bootloader and root the phone too
And I still don't know if I can use AKM on my phone with snapdragon 845 after & after the phone is rooted)

Of course no, if you'll continue to use watsapp.
How to tweak it must be described in general android discussions, I bet there's plenty of advices

Lol I accidentaly commented from another device so it's a different account. Anyway, do you think the problem appears because it's Whatsapp Plus (which has a kind of malware in it which stoles data, but still I decided to keep it because of the features) or it's like that in normal whatsapp too?
If I will root my phone I will be able to find an alternative for the Whatsapp Plus features while using the normal whatsapp from the playstore so just wanted to know if whatsapp has this wakelock problem globaly (Don't know if this is the place, tell me where I can open a thread on it if this isn't the place ?)
