[Port] Remix OS 2.0 for Nextbook Ares 8 NXA8QC116 [Rooted] - UPDATED Build 20161115 - Supported Devices

This Nextbook Ares 8 NXA8QC116 rom is a port of the stock Remix OS 2.0 firmware for Nextbook with Baytrail from Jide.
What works:
1) Wifi
2) Bluetooth
3) Touchscreen
4) Sound
5) Accelerometer/Auto-rotate
6) Brightness Control
7) Power Management
8) HDMI Video
9) HDMI Audio Out (Fixed on Build 20161115)
10) Camera (Partially Fixed on Build 20161115)
11) Miracast (Build 20161115)
12) Google Play Services
What doesn't work/Issues:
1) Back Camera image is rotated 90 degrees. Front Camera not working.
Features:
1) Stock Remix OS 2.0
2) No bloatware
3) Rooted with SuperSU Free v2.78
4) Removed force encryption
My Wishlist:
1) Remix OS default DPI is 160. I wanted to raise the DPI to around 200 but while system UI is ok with that DPI, the launcher desktop crashes and displays black background without the icons. Please tell me if anyone knows how to resolve. DPI 160 is not too comfortable on an 8" device especially for people with fat fingers.
EDIT: Found a way to allow custom DPI on launcher desktop. On Settings>Experimental features>Enable launcher file mode. I actually prefer this mode as the desktop is more "Windows-like" wherein you can drag any icon from the launcher to the desktop. And larger DPI values are ok. I'm now using DPI=200 and my fat fingers are now happy.
Example of DPI =200 with Enabled launcher file mode:

Been using it for 2 weeks, apart from limited multi-tasking because of only 1GB ram, the rom works pretty well as long as you don't run many apps at the same time.

I'm planning on attempting to try this with my Nextbook Flexx 11. Running RemixOS 3.0 on it now lacking audio and a few other features. Anyone know how I would go about the install?
Remix 3.0 uses system.sfs I've tried repacking the system.img file using RMXtools 1.8 but then it loads to the x86 logo with the Android prompt and doesn't get any further.
Any help would be appreciated.

If you really want Marshmallow Remix 3.0, you will just have to wait for Jide to update kernel to fully support Baytrail devices.

Marshmallow would be nice but I'll be happy to get 2.0 working.

Yes. I'm eyeing on Marshmallow too. but I settled for Lollipop. at least I was able to use my device's original kernel and everything is working (apart from the camera issue). But I'm still watching over the development of Remix 3.0, if they will be releasing full support for Baytrails and Cherry Trails. Still hoping...
BTW, I'm sorry I can't be of any help to your Nextbook Flexx 11. If you had an Ares 11, I might be able to guide you how to put Remix 2.0 on it. But the Flexx 11 is different. You really have to go through the usual Remix installation similar to other x86 pc's.

Thanks for doing this. Works great on the Ares 8. Much faster than the 5.0 rom.

Good you liked it. Yeah, I used Ares 8 5.0 rom too. And it was painfully slow even with xposed memory leak fix. So i was challenged to fix and share Ares 8 5.1.1 rom and then got bored with nothing else to do with it, so I played around with a Remix port since I was also triple-booting with Remix OS on my laptop and I liked it for content consumption and playing android games on my laptop. I was really happy when I finally got it working on my device so I decided to share it with those interested.

What is your device's Model#/ID? What was you're previous rom? How did you install Remix OS?
From the instructions, you should do a fresh install only. You should do a FULL WIPE before installing the posted zip file. Especially if you're coming from other roms.
If your device model is the same as mine, you should not have any hardware issues (apart from the camera).
Try following exactly the steps as posted:
Installation Steps:
1) Download the zip file of the latest build from post#2.
2) Copy the zip file to your SD card.
3) Boot your device to TWRP.
WARNING: This will wipe your device. Make sure to have a backup of your working rom plus data so you can restore in case something goes wrong.
4) In TWRP, Wipe>Advanced Wipe. Wipe dalvik-cache, cache, data, system
5) In TWRP, Install the zip file you copied to your SD card.
6) Reboot device after successful installation.

okay rom is now uploaded onto basketbuild. Please follow link in post 2.
i recommend clean flash from another rom as usual. If dirty flashing in the future there is no necessity to flash gapps again, however sometime i do notice supersu goes a bit funny so i would recommend reflashing supersu just to be safe. failing that you can just install it again from market and cause it to update via openrecovery script.
awesome !!! love this rom on my N6 . and now also on my N9 thanks !!!
Currently going through 2nd attempt at flashing. Used 64-bit GApps and linked SuperSU. Followed instructions for coming from another ROM. 20 minutes passed without a boot so I'll attempt again without flashing SuperSU until it (hopefully) boots up and I complete the setup screen.

Guessing it went well this time round might make a change to the op to not recommend SuperSU flash on clean flash
I know the change log is on the device once you flash the ROM. But I would like to know the changes that have been made besides what is in CM12 already.
Err... Far to many to list. Notification tweaks, button tweaks, stylus options, status bar options as well as others in temasek spare parts. That is a cm12 theme the standard colors would be regular cm in the attached screenahot
Does LTE work on this ROM?
Alright. Thanks man. I'll just flash it and play around
Edit:: Flashed it. Everything running great. One thing I have been looking for in several ROMs is the ability to put the nav bar on one side while in landscape. I kinda sucks having the bar at the bottom of my screen when it would be much more convenient right by one of my hands whole holding in it landscape. Is that possible here or in any rom yet.

My apologies for the late response, I fell asleep earlier than normal.
It never ended up getting to the setup screen. I wonder if this has something to do with the format of the system partition.

I was! I figured it must have been that because I remember changing it from F2FS to ext4 when development for the N9 was still in early stages.

As we're getting back into the thread game, keeping up with threads and updating them as per changelogs can be too hectic given our schedule. However, very detailed changelogs always go up on our Google+ page, follow us for constant updates!

Instructions & requirements
We highly recommend you to follow these instructions very carefully. Users usually tend to skip a few steps and eventually fall in trouble. Are you with me? Good. Let's get this train going.
Just a few things to keep in mind first -
If you're coming from another ROM / Stock, your system data (not internal storage) and cache will have to be wiped. This includes apps, accounts, messages, call logs etc.
There's been some users complaining about different GAPPS variants messing up installs and causing a ton of issues. Upon investigating it seems OpenGapps Mini/Nano work best.
Understand that Paranoid Android is a custom ROM and it might lead to addiction as it's relatively good. We shouldn't be accused of anything just incase your cat starts drinking wine. Things get a little woozy in the Paranoid World.
Some brain might be involved if things go wrong. Not a lot though, as much to solve what's 1+1.
Okay let's get to the main bit -
Once you have all the required files - boot into recovery and wipe the bananas out of your device. Get into the wipe menu and wipe data, system, cache and dalvik cache (basically everything except Internal Storage).
Once wiped, get into the "Install from zip" menu and select the ROM zip. (pa_gemini_6.x...). Once added to the install queue, TWRP will ask you if you want to add more zips into the queue - Click on "add more zips" and select the firmware package.
Swipe the bar on the bottom to flash/install zips. Once both zips are done installing - Reboot into system and set-up your device, after you've let it settle with screen off for about 10 Minutes, do not do anything else! Please let your device settle with screen off for about 10 Minutes after the first boot, otherwise the system wont boot after a reboot!
Once you're done setting up your device - well that's when you're done. One thing though - Make sure you DO NOT INSTALL any other zip in the same queue as the ROM! Meaning, do not flash anything like Gapps, a kernel or a root package while installing the ROM. We recommend you do that AFTER you're done setting up your device.

I just updated my phone to 5.8.2 last night. It'll be interesting to run the same ROM on both of my devices. Thanks for your contribution...I look forward to trying it out this evening.
So happy that you took this on @Schrolli97 I love RR and our device deserves the best in software, it's really that good. Best of luck
New builds are up and linked in OP.
Next update should show up in OTA updates
Has anyone run into issues with their external sd card -- "corrupted sd card" -- after updating to the last couple versions of RR? This happened as well in the Lineage 14 version (and is discussed there at length). I'd hoped it was avoided in RR, but alas, no. At least, not for me. The card is *not* corrupted; rather the OS isn't reading it correctly. I had to back off with RR to an earlier version capable of still reading exfat (the default microsd card format).

I had this some time ago. I moved all data to my PC. Formatted the card in my tablet and moved it all back. Now it works fine
Nope, sorry y'all...
Two different microsd cards, formatted on the tablet with android as portable (exfat). Both work fine with last version of RR previous to 2/28/17 version. As soon as I install newest version, either clean or dirty install, I get the "Corrupted Samsung SD Card" message. Both cards are *brand* new -- one a Samsung Evo plus 64g, the other a Samsung Evo 128g.
For folks with the card formatted internally, it will work of course (different format). I'm about to restore my old version, but thought I'd give ya a heads-up. And again, this same issue has shown up over in the LIneage 14 folks' page.
I know this is complaining. But hey, maintainers of these Roms get total respect from me... and THANKS. Just passing along info to help....
---------- Post added at 11:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:24 PM ----------
VERIFIED that removing 2/28 version and reinstalling the 2/18 version restores functionality to sdcard (portable exfat).
Anybody wants great sound on your tablet? Tested by me. Works great. I installed the whole choobang. Damn! I have bass on my speakers now!

@Schrolli97 thanks for carrying on with this great RR Rom! I clean installed the 2017/02/24 version, and it has been working great. Donation sent!
There is a fix to the lock screen non-rotation issue (which you may know about). Posting here for others, FYI...
Add the following code to the root/system/build.prop file, then save it and reboot.
Code:
log.tag.launcher_force_rotate=VERBOSE
lockscreen.rot_override=true
You can use the included Deathly Adiutor app to edit the build.prop file (under Tools / Build prop Editor).

Thanks for mentioning this fix. Just added it to the OP :highfive:
Let's see if I can get it to work that you don't need to edit build.prop anymore.

For me it's working fine so I can't say much about it. I guess the only fix at this time is disabling sdcardfs via build.prop...
For anyone else having this problem:
Changing "ro.sys.sdcardfs=true" to "ro.sys.sdcardfs=false" in build.prop and rebooting should fix this.

Super-appreciate this rom.... but no, this is not a fix. Identical message "corrupted sdcard" before and after changing the above in Deathly Adiutor. I had to revert to an earlier version of the rom before the sdcardfs setting came into play. Is there any way to remove that code from my end? As in, remove it altogether, or somehow having it revert to what worked just fine before it came along?
An interesting corollary is my Samsung Note 4 phone, which I also run Resurrection Rom on (the 3/7/17 version). No issues with the micro sd card in it... and interestingly, that RR build has no Deathly Adiutor in it. I'm in over my head at this point, but pass on that info for what it is worth.

If changing build.prop values doesn't work, I don't think there's a way to revert this from your end. I don't even know if (i.e. how easy) I can revert it. So I guess I will read about it. It may take a while, though, as I'm quite busy for the next week.
Deathly Adiutor is an altered version of kernel Adiutor that only works with devices using the processor of our tablet. I don't think the note 4 is one of those devices. Also it probably has another maintainer who's maybe just not including it in the ROM.
I guess sdcardfs is also just included by lineage maintainers whose device drivers I'm using. Though, I didn't have enough time to check, yet.
I'll keep my eyes open. Will tell you when I know more.
New builds are up and should show up in Settings > Configurations > Miscellaneous > Updates.
Non-rotating lockscreen is fixed.
For the next update I'll target the SD card if the problem is still present.

Thanks, and thanks for incorporating the non-rotating lockscreen. :good:
I have noticed a problem with Substratum with this 20170317 version of the RR ROM. Substratum is running in Legacy mode, and not OMS mode. On the previous version 20170228 RR ROM, Substratum was running fine in OMS mode. I did a full wipe / clean install of the 0317 ROM. I have installed the same version of Substratum (604) on both 0228 and 0317 ROMs.
Per some other forum suggestons, I tried force closing Substratum, then clearing the data and cache for substratum and reopening it. Still in Legacy mode. Anyone else experiencing this?
Quick question, is anyone else having Bluetooth issues? I'm not able to connect to any Bluetooth devices

I have not experienced any Bluetooth issues. Although so far only connected to my Mpow bluetooth headphones, worked first time.
Alrighty then.......looks like it's time for a clean install
Sent from my SM-N920C using Tapatalk
I dirty - flashed the 0317 update, and I wasn't going to say anything... But since someone else clean-flashed and has the same problem with substratum, I decided to post.
It is running in legacy mode, and isn't applying anything. I've cleared data on substratum, disabled/rebuilt the themes, and uninstalled all/reinstalled all. Of course, the tab has been rebooted in between many times.

nope ! This is an idea of mine.
Freedom is not imperium,
It's pure stock plus anything people want. Everything with an aroma installer to give everyone choices of everything.
Kernel is also stock uncompiled - translated - added some imperium branches - compiled (translated back to the language the hardware "understands") and lastly to avoid any bugs compiled to boot.img
i wanna inform everyone about my plans.
Further more, ok customisation is one thing and the aroma installer will have everything included,
i will remove gapps from being pre-installed.
It's annoying to clean flash a rom and wait one hour for updates. Plus that LG will never update. So i don't see any reason on Gapps being pre-installed.
You will all flash seperately Gapps just like you do on AOSP/Lineage Builds to keep your phones always up-to-date.
~If my plan is wrong , feel free to correct me~
First of all it is your rom, so its your choice. In my opinion you have to decide between stock based rom or custom rom. To many compromisses makes the system buggy and laggy as many examples from the past show. Just make a fine, clean and fast rom (just my opinion).

I will stick to stock as a base cause the biggest feat of g4 is the camera. When and if we get Android 7 LG drivers , I'm changing to lineage based for sure.

ill add LG gallery for h815 too. tomorrow will be there.
The thing is that h811 allowed me to keep more bloat. H815 is TOO bloated with crap from LG. You will notice that in the builds size. Although H811 build is smaller , it has more apps. Anyway , ill see what i can do. It was in my plans anyway.

Heads up, there seems to be an error in the device path in META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script which causes installation to fail (/system won't get mounted).
/dev/block/platform/mtk-msdc.0/11230000.MSDC0/by-name
on my particular phone this needs to be changed to....
/dev/block/platform/mtk-msdc.0/by-name

I updated to 3.3.1 in the process of trying to get the rom to install. I'll give your build of TWRP a try at some point.
Nice work by the way :good:. I've not tested extensively yet, but it boots up and appears to work without any obvious problems.
Dude, THANK YOU SO MUCH for this! I am so grateful
It works flawlessly and you gave life to my old phone.

Thank you in advance

Footej Camera works perfectly for me. But tbh i didn't test any other camera apps. so if u found any better camera app u can share it here to the rest of users.

Didn't test it. it may or may not work. u can test it and share the experience.
backup your data & apps just in case, using Migrate app, and do a clean fresh flash if it didn't work.

Ok so dirty flash was a huge fail for me so did a clean flash and EVERYTHING works great in fact it feels like a brand new phone.. DAMN it's great again... Having used LineageOS 14 and being hugely disappointed by it this rom is a MASSIVE BREATH OF FRESH AIR.. And has actually made my RN2 USEFUL again.... Thank you for your excellent hardwork...
one questions I have

Works fine
anyone flash MAGIK and XPOSED mods yet????
Just friggin loving this rom.... only issue I have had is occassionly it disconnects from WIFI and then take a long time to reconnect... other than that all works great.
for those wanting a better camera all the following work great
manual camera fx
open camera
camera zoom fx
rectrica
bandacam
DSLR camera
all with similar results and all pretty damn good.
possible second issue
if I add or change unlock pin code... RN2 just locks up... have to pull battery out, once rebooted code has been changed and can unlock phone fine after that... seems too be the initial action of adding or changing it that causes issue.
Hello, sir will you make DotOS v2.0 too For our Xiaomi Note 2?
my sim cards don't seem to work on this rom. i've had this issue before in RR 5.8.5 and the only way to fix it is just to reboot my phone and voila, it's fixed, but in this rom it can't even read my sim cards at all
edit :
sim 1 is working as of right now. i just had to wait for it to work though the signal cluster icons don't show that it does. sim 2 is still not working
i have successfully installed both magisk and xposed. they both work like a charm thus far. i'll let you know if there's anything going on
