I use nova launcher and set a double tap gesture to launch a screen off app. I wish using only fingerprint to unlock or wake was an option
You could also just put a shortcut for the screen off app on the home screen.

Is there a way to do this while keeping the pixel launcher? I tried a couple of apps, but it required me to put in my pattern unlock when waking the phone with the fingerprint reader.

even with the pixel launcher it requires me to have a secondary unlock....maybe I'm missing some setting???

I wish it didn't require anything other than a fingerprint. One of the very few things that bug me about the phone. I wish it had double tap on the fingerprint reader to sleep.

Oh so with nova, you don't jus use your fingerprint only to unlock? I'm using the pixel launcher and I only have to use my finger to unlock...?

Nova and Pixel launcher do the same thing for me---fingerprint to wake and then requires a pattern, pin or password to unlock

Hmm that's strange...I only have a fingerprint to wake and unlock all at once...what you're saying sounds redundant...

I believe if you use a 3rd party app to turn the screen off, you are always required to unlock by means of pin/password or pattern depending on what you have setup.

Yeah I seem that, I'm rooted, I might do that in a little,only had the phone for a few days and wanted to see what the stock kernel was like..seems to work pretty well with that exception...it would be good to jus swipe to sleep or something like that...avoid using the power button as much as possible

[Q] Anybody know how to add "lock instantly with power key" option in JB?

Hi! On the GS3 in Ice Cream Sandwich, the power button could either 1) lock the phone or 2) simply turn the screen off without locking, seen in the "Lock instantly with power key" toggle:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
In 4.1.1/Jelly Bean, though, Samsung or AT&T removed that toggle, forcing users to use 1) lock the phone; the entire option is now missing:
Do any smali gurus or ROM modders or anybody else know how to get this toggle back?
Try setting it the way how I have it in the screenshot. Make sure to un-check swipe lock.

But, the power button still locks the phone. I don't want it to do that--just turn the screen off. Thanks for the reply, though.

Set the screen lock out time to, say 3 minutes. Now power button will NOT lock the phone.

And, still: if I press the power button, the screen turns off. If I press it again to wake me up after maybe 2 seconds, I am greeted by my pattern unlock screen. Does this not occur on your phone with these settings?

Nope. I have mine with 3 mins inactivity. And using power button or after 30 second screen timeout it doesn't lock immediately. If it turn it on within the 3 minute time period, it does not show lock screen.
Try using a different launcher.

Huh. OK, thanks for the info.
Launchers can affect lockscreens? I'm on Nova and I tried the TW launcher: no dice on either.
Could it, though, be your ROM? I'm on stock. The Intergalactic v2.8 release notes lists "Many other tweaks..." at the end, which might include this functionality.

It's a known issue with the AT&T JB ROM. I've used Verizon and Sprint ROMs ported over to AT&T and the option is there and works fine. Seems like only by using a 3rd party app can you get this functionality back, unless someone had a mod that can be flashed.

[Req] Screen Off App

This may sound ridiculous, but I'm looking for a simple screen off app. There are a ton of Screen Off and Lock apps all over the Google play store. I just want to be able to hook up an app to the double tap gesture in Apex Launcher so the screen turns off but DOESN'T lock. I'd like the phone to use the default "lock after x minutes" system setting that i have set.
Q: "Can't you just hit the power button?"
A: Sure I can. But I grew accustomed to the double tap to sleep gesture of the LG launcher and would really like to emulate that with Apex if possible.
Considering the feature appears to be missing from all of these types of apps the site I wonder if it's somehow not possible. But I figured I'd check here before I give up and possibly attempt to write such an app myself.

I tried that and it locks my screen each time. Unless I'm an idiot and not using it properly somehow. (Which is very possible)

You should be able to double tap the notification bar to turn off the screen as well without any app. It should work with Apex since I'm doing this with Nova Launcher. Didn't realize there was there was an app though, gonna try this out!
If you go into the settings of Apex or Nova in the gestures. Find the double tap, Select activities and you find the screen off app. Select it, and bam you've got your double tap for screen off back.
Edit: not sure if you can set it to not lock the phone down though. I missed that part of the original post. Lol my bad. I'll look to see if I can figure anything out on that.
Edit #2: I couldn't find anything. Screen off and lock app has an option for this for certain versions of Android. Unfortunately not for kit Kat though : /

In all my trials last night, I think I found one app that turns the screen off without immediately locking the phone. But it worked through a widget, so the double tap gesture didn't work. I know it's possible, so all isn't lost.

That's what I have set up in Llama (see next post).
Then under Settings > General > Security > Phone Administrators, make sure Llama is checked. This gives it permission to turn the screen off. Then in the gesture settings for Nova, select shortcut, then Llama shortcut, and select the event you made.

I'm confused at what you're trying to accomplish. What we did was allowed Nova to be able to double tap to sleep like with the default launcher. That doesn't affect the lock screen in anyway. If you want to bypass the lockscreen when waking the device, you'll need to use knock code as tour security.

The OP mentioned it.
So if I use the LG launcher (home) if you double tap it, the screen turns off. I have it set to 10 minutes and the lock screen will appear, knock code or pin or password screen. So if i double tap to turn on the screen within the 10 minutes, it will go straight to the home screen, if after the 10 the lock screen appears.
With Nova, we have to use a 3rd party app like screen off and lock or what you're using Llama, but we want the function of still not locking the screen within the 10 minutes. hope that explains.
If there is a solution that'd be great, if not, i'll just deal with using the knock code each time.
Go to lock screen settings under display and uncheck "power button instantly unlocks."
I think that's what you want.

Light Speed Animations
If you a quick-silver animation fan you will surely love this tweak. We bet you will see a remarkable change in animation performance.
Nova Settings > Look & Feel and then tap on Animation speed.
Now tweak at your will.

Hide Dirty and Misused Apps
Android Apps are cluttering the App drawers and reducing the productivity of App drawers. Now in Nova launcher hide all the unused Apps from the App drawer. To call back any apps you can use inbuilt app search function in Nova launcher to reach even hidden Apps. Cool right?
You can find these settings at Nova Settings > Apps & Widget drawers > Drawer groups section > Hide Apps
Two-paged Dock
This is me personal favorite setting in Nova launcher. It is great experiences having 2 pages in your home screen dock. In here I can have 2 rows of Apps of my choice. To access different pages just swipe the dock and you are in the new row.
To access this tweak go to Nova Settings > Dock > Dock pages.
Gestures
If you are a Nova Launcher fan surely you might be well aware of awesome gestures it has. But everyone just misses one secret gesture. It can be integrated with above tweak too. Just long tap an icon and select Edit options. Set swipe action to any specified app or App search. I personally prefer App search for the home button.

Maybe I have found a bug. In Nova if I activated double tap on the screen to switch off the display there are problems with unlock the device by finger from lockscreen.

That's not a bug, it's related to the way android OS works.
That is why I love this phone, you can set the capacitive buttons to turn off the screen with a double tap or long press and the fingerprint scanner still works.

Please, could you clarify a bit. What kind of problems you encounter after double tapping to sleep in Nova? I have used that feature over a week now and haven't noticed anything... Though occasionally my fingerprint is not regocnized and I was wondering if Nova double tap could be the culprit.

After Restart or if device was locked by 3rd party app you need to unlock device by pin. Fingerprint is not an option at the moment. It's MM feature. It can be bypassed by Fingerprint enabler xposed modul.

[APP] Fingerprint sensor as home button

For those of you that would like the fingerprint sensor as home button + other options, you should try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ztc1997.fingerprint2sleep For me, works good so far.
Ty this is awesome now. Single press brings me home. Double expands toggles and swipe open notification panel. No need to reach to the top of the screen anymore.
Awesome, this works perfectly. A tap brings me home then I press it again to turn off the screen.
Some times it just stops working and this is very annoying for me =Z

I'm sorry that some of you have problems with the app I recommended. For me works good, but I have only the option as home enabled. Maybe some of the other options are causing problems. Uninstall and maybe do a restart if not fixed.
Sent from my XT1635-02 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I also only had the home option enabled. Uninstalling helped, restarting (several times) did not... I don't actually miss it though, maybe because my times with Samsung and a physical home button are so long gone that I am not so much tempted to use the scanner for that function anyway...
For the app to work, I have to have fingerprint security enabled? And that requires an unlock configuration (pin, pattern)?
