Pixel doesn't connect to data when roaming. - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I am on T-Mobile and when I roam, my phone will connect to the network for phone calls and SMS, but will not connect to the data services. I have it turned on for data roaming in the settings. My wife's 6P is also on T-Mobile and connects to data just fine. Any ideas?

Check the APN on the 6P and compare to Pixel, are they the same?

Have you tried to switch the sims between the devices?

I am noticing this same thing on T-Mobile with the Pixel after coming from the Nexus 6P. Did you ever get an answer to this?

There is an option to reset the cellular network in settings. I was roaming in South Korea for the last 3 weeks with the pixel xl and didnt have any issues. Roaming is set off by default.

Any update
Any update to this? I just discovered that I'm experiencing the same thing.

I have the same issue. I can put my SIM back in my Nexus 5x, roaming works. In my Pixel, it can call and text, but no data.

Does it work temporarely when you turn on and off the flightmode?

i have the same problem but it sometimes works temporarily when I manually switch to another network while roaming

Mine did the same, went into mobile network settings, network operators, search networks and then choose automatically. Also make sure data roaming is on.
The phone then started working for roaming, in one country I had to do this twice before it picked it up

Change the APN Protocol (not for roaming protocol) to IPV4/V6.
You could also go into the testing menu (dial *#*#4636#*#* - phone information) to global auto but I think that setting gets reset every now and then.

Was working on my first trip overseas two mons ago. Same location as before but now i
I am am also on T-Mobile. On my first trip to Nicaragua two months ago my pixel work fine. Now my phone will connect to the network for phone calls and SMS, but will not connect to the data services. I have it turned on for data roaming in the settings. My wife's S5 is also on T-Mobile and connects to data just fine. T-MOBILE reset me several times. I will get a message then from Claro or Movistar saying no data because your data roming is off. No matter if I have it switched to on or off after resting I will get the message everytime.

I was having this same issue in Thailand and not Japan. Changing to ipv4/v6 didn't help but explicitly changing to 3g preferred instead of LTE preferred fixed it for me

Posting this to add the list of things that may work..
I have a Pixel 2 and was having this same issue with a Twilio sim card (runs on T-Mobile) while in Australia, New Zealand, and later in Ireland (home network is USA). I had tried all kinds of random APN tweeks mentioned in this thread (https://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-lg-g3/help/international-data-roaming-to-t2823789) with no success. I had also contacted google and they sent me a whole new pixel 2 but that made no difference. After much googling heres what I found:
Edit the APN settings and click the APN Type. Add "default" to the beginning of that list. Try and save, it will tell you that you can't set the type to default, that's fine. Press the home button and re-navigate to the mobile settings and default should be successfully saved in the APN type. That alone resolved the data connection issues for me but I was only getting H internet rather than LTE. I then also changed the MVNO setting to `SPN` and suddenly got LTE connectivity.

Unlocked Sony Arc Hotspot not working

Hey there everyone
first time post on this forum. Hopefully someone can give me some good news on how to fix my problem.
I am on the Fido network in Vancouver, BC. I recently bought a Sony Arc from Rogers and had it unlocked. Everything on the phone works great, but I cannot get my mobile hotspot to work. Wifi, GPS, email, etc. all work fine.
I had read somewhere that I might have to change my APN settings, but when I did that, flash turned off on my web browser - maybe I had put in the wrong setting.
Then I also read that you have to change your WAP settings, but I don't know where to find that.
Hopefully someone here can give me some good news on how to fix this bug. I did phone both Fido and Rogers and they said that it should work and that nothing is blocked on my account.
Would really appreciate some feedback and some help with thanks. Thanks in advance.

Nothing to do with you're APN's etc if that' not working... if you're getting a data connection (GPRS/ 3G/ HSDPA) then this should work fine...
if it's not then suggest trying to reflash the firmware using SEUS or Flashtool.

Weird. Most of that doesn't make sense. Adobe Flash is unaffected by APN settings. Unlocking has nothing to do with 3G either.
A quick Google search turns up:
APN Settings for Fido: http://forums.fido.ca/t5/forums/forumtopicpage/board-id/Smartphones/thread-id/768/page/1
Like im_iceman said, if 3G works, hotspot should also.
Have you set the password? SSID? etc.?
Hotspot works fine on my arc. And X10.
Portable Hotspot Doesn't Work For Me Either
I purchased an Xperia ARC from Mobicity in Australia. In order to work on the NextG 850 MHz network I purchased the Model LT15a which is described at dudubdub.xperiablog.net/2011/04/17/xperia-arc-lt15a-sold-on-ebay/ (replace dubdubdub with www). This is built for and branded Rogers. If I switch on Portable Wi-Fi hotspot it works so that I can connect my laptop to it but turns off my data connection so it is useless. If I turn the hotspot off the data connection comes back on. I can't have the data connection and the wi-fi hotspot on at the same time.
I've interpreted this as a Rogers special build that doesn't allow tethering to satisfy Rogers commercial requirements. Telcos in Australia don't mind tethering but some others do and I guess Rogers is one of them. Its a guess though because I don't know Rogers policies.
Sounds like Rogers have added some power saving app, and this is automatically disabling your data connection when WiFi is on (JuiceDefender does this I think, but might be intelligent enough to notice when you're using the phone as a hotspot - I've not tried yet).
If that's the case, you'll either need to track down the app and remove it (there's a guide on here somewhere for removing pre-installed system apps) or flash your phone with more generic firmware that doesn't have it.

Lte on unlocked sprint s6 edge+ on t-mobile

Does anyone know if I can get lte working or is it possible to do
Probably not
Unfortunately no, it's not possible.
Why would it not be possible? It does support some of t mobile bands.
Sent from my SM-G928P using Tapatalk
Lte band is different on tmobile gsm than on a sprint phones
I Am in same situation. It does not make sense if i go to ##data# i see bands 2,4,12 all LTE in priority list. It is there. How can we make it work?
Mine works on LTE, but signal is very unstable. Voicemail wont work unless switch back to 3G.
Just an update, I unlocked my phone. Connects to B2, B4, B12 no problem.

That's t mobile fastest lte. It will default to that unless you go out of an area that doesn't have aws. Then it should pickup B2 and B12 when available.

how do you unlock a phone
That's not proof that it's working. That's proof that the phone is seeing the LTE band. Mine sees it also but I can't actually connect to it. It clearly says unregistered on the screen shot on the top. When connected it says "sending & receiving" or active

That's proof. How you get that to connect. I'm on automatic and get only 3g and the APN setting gets blocked. If I go to setting through root and change to LTE/gsm auto prl. I get only 3g. The phone sees the same LTE band your on but it won't connect. Only time it did was when I was using activate phone but it would not show accurate signal meter and then reverted back to 3g when it failed to activate
Used my msl to get into data and added tmobile apn. Left it on automatic and it connects perfect. Only thing I noticed is when using the apn fast.t-mobile.com, is you have to put it in like this. fast.tmobile.com. works fine.
Sent from my SM-G928P using Tapatalk
When I go into ##data# with edit using msl I still can't add or edit APN. It's working right now. But it's on LTE/GSM auto prl in device I go using advanced signal status app, which shows up as LTE GSM UMTS In mobile networks>network mode Only thing is the signal meter is not reading accurate and I have to make a call every few hours to get LTE to connect again. Going to try automatic again. I upgraded to latest update yesterday
I'll have to check again. I'll let you know in the morning
Sent from my SM-G928P using Tapatalk
It works on tmobile
If you can get into GCF SETTING CHANGE NETWORK BANDS TO GSM/WCDMA/LTE. ONCE THAT'S DONE RESTART PHONE AND DIAL ##DATA# HIT EDIT ENTER YOUR MSL CODE.. NEXT HIT LTE THEN HIT LTE ROAMING MAKE SURE IT'S ENABLED.. PRESS BACK ON YOUR PHONE TO SAVE THE SETTINGS... NOW THE LAST THING YOU NEED TO DO IS MAKE SURE IN YOUR T-MOBILE APN SETTINGS BEARER IS SET TO LTE ONLY.. SAVE THE APN SETTINGS AND REBOOT PHONE AND BOOM YOU HAVE YOUR SPRINT UNLOCK EDGE PLUS WORKING ON T-MOBILE LTE.. RECEIVING AND SENDING MMS WON'T WORK UNTIL YOU UNDO ALL SETTINGS AND PUT BACK THE PHONE TO WORK ON 3G.

A couple of questions.

So I have my mate 20x today, global variant. Can someone tell me what carrier services app is please and is it needed? Also does anyone know where the carrier network configuration file is stored , I got one when I inserted my TMobile USA sim card on initial setup. Thanks.
Also is it normal for the 4g LTE icon to remain on when connected to WiFi? I've always been under impression that mobile data shuts off when WiFi is connected. Anywhere to check?
PS is sucks that double tap to wake screen doesn't work on this device. I hope the power button lasts. Lol

About carrier services: there are different opinions, some say that it is currently only for Pixel phones, the others that it supports RCS if the provider has it enabled, there are complains that it sucks battery...
Carrier network configuration could be found under settings/wireless&networks/mobile network or dual sim settings
4g sign stays when you use WIFI though there is no mobile data consumption then. You can easily check mobile data usage under settings/wireless&networks/data usage.
I've tried and double tap indeed doesn't work. I never use it though. I get nervous with functions which could trigger the phone unintentionally and double tap might be a perfect candidate. You have other safer possibilities to lock and unlock. And yes, the power button is reliable.

Thanks, with carrier services I was referring to the attached.
In regards to the carrier configuration text message I received when I first inserted my sim card , I couldn't locate that configuration file. Maybe it gets deleted with the text message my carrier sent me?

Mobile network is not available. Connect to a wireless network to make a call

When I try to make a call, this is the message that pops up. Data is working. LTE is connecting. I'm on Tmobile. I went in to the phone settings via *#*#4636#*#* to check the network and it's on TD-SCDMA/CDMA/UMTS. I went to the network settings and reset the sim data network settings and that was what it was reset to. I thought it would be GSM/Auto but that didn't fix it either. Under Voice Serivice it says "Emergency Calls Only". Voice Network type: "Unknown". Is this a SIM card problem or did I mess something up in the settings? I flashed back to stock oxygen and while the phone was downloading the update, I was actually able to call my voicemail. But as soon as I hang up, the message in the title popped back up again. Help if you can.

I was experiencing data issues too today. Finally found out that there are outages going on all over. So it's nothing on your end. Just got to wait it out I guess.
https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/06/15/network-outage-affecting-t-mobile-att-and-verizon-reported/
I see. I checked my wife's phone and noticed she had more options than I do for "Set Preferred Network Type". Her's actually has an option for GSM/LTE/CDMA/UTMS and some other options I can't see because it runs off the screen. She is not unlocked and still on stock Tmobile Firmware. I have converted mine to Global so I'm assuming this is the reason for the difference. However, she is still able to text but her phone is inoperable as is mine. I'm assuming it's due to the outage you posted. Thanks for the response. I still find it odd that we don't have the same network settings but it's never been a problem before today so I'll just wait it out and see what happens!
Could be a Magisk module causing it

Question Disable 5G

Stock, purchased from Google. Developer options turned on. NOT rooted, stock, Feb update.

to disable 5G. Unfortunately, I don't have anything to disable 5G

So...using the #*#*4636 thingy, I found that by selecting any option that does NOT have NR (5G) will disable 5G
Any ideas where the setting is suppose to be, to just toggle 5G on/off?

And if you look at the first photo, under SIMS, THAT is all that is displayed. There are no other options, no 3 button menu button. If I click on the sim, it just gives the preferences for calling. NOTHING to change from 5G to LTE.

Who's your carrier? Some Providers such as Google Fi make it difficult to disable 5G (going so far as to re-enable it automatically in the background).
Also, when you first went into Phone Info through the dialer, you would have seen something like "NR/LTE/GSM/WCDMA". In this example, to disable 5G, you would remove the "NR" and change it to "LTE/GSM/WCDMA". Carriers use different network "types". If you want to go back to default you could try resetting your network by going to settings, internet, sim, top right "reset" or in settings, system, reset, network (but the last one will reset your wifi and bluetooth so it would be a last resort.
Instead of resetting network settings, post your carrier and someone with the same provider can tell you the default network type in Phone Info. In the future, anyone changing a setting in Phone Info needs to take caution when opening it, wait 10 seconds until it populates and then take a screenshot of the default setting.
It's sad that a few carriers make it so difficult to turn off 5G. It seems that MVNO's that use different carriers, usually have this limitation. If you are using FI, check their app to see if there are any settings for disabling 5G.
You have to tap on your SIM first to see the menu.
If it's not in there, the secret menu is your only option.
I'm on Google Fi and would use the 'secret' phone info menu to change network type to disable 5G occasionally when out and about and looking to stretch my battery. This worked for several hours usually but now Fi is re-enabling the default network with 5G within minutes. Was hoping for a workaround, even a method requiring root would be fine, but haven't seen anything like this yet.
When I tap on the sim, there isn't anything there. Carrier is AT&T postpaid.
On the "secret" menu (I'm guessing it's the *#*#4636#*#*), as long as I don't use
any of the settings that have NR (5G), it keeps 5G off.
