updating to new oxygen os - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Just wondering if it's safe to upgrade to the new oxygen OS update on a rooted op3. I know you can't upgrade from marshmallow to nougat but a smaller OS update is OK?

Sure, you can update it. But keep in mind that you'll lose root, so you'll have to flash SuperSU (or whatever you're using) again.

Cool it won't brick my phone or anything? I want to download the beta so I can just install it and the re root my phone? Sorry new to all this.

Yes, you can safely update to beta. Just make sure you have modified TWRP 3.0.2-22 before flashing. Official TWRP 3.0.2-1 doesn't play nicely with new firmware in community builds.
So:
1. Flash TWRP 3.0.2-22
2. Upgrade ROM
3. Flash SuperSU
4. Done 🙂

Nope, and even when it's bricked it's fixable.

Thanks. I bricked my oneplus last week and it was so stressful getting it unbricked so just a little nervous .

Also if you're unencrypted (like me), oos will require SuperSU to even boot

Rooted 5.01 want to flash 6.01 - will i lose root?

I have 5.01 and I want to update to 6.01. I want to wipe it clean. Got factory image from Google site.
What's the difference between the OTA and factory downloads?
I can just flash the factory in TWRP right? Will I lose root, or will TWRP ask if I want to keep root?
I still have boot loader unlocked.I just can't remember for the life of me, haven't done flashing etc in a few years.
Thanks!
So...not a single person can tell me if I lose root, or if TWRP will re-root?
Please?
N7 is no longer supported by Google and there will be no more OTA.
You can't flash the entire factory image directly from TWRP (but it is doable).
When you flash the factory image, you will lose root, TWRP and all your data.
NRT can simplify flashing, rooting and restoring TWRP.
You have unlocked boot loader
Just fastboot flash all as yiu want clean install
After that fastboot flash twrp
After that flash superSU
Done.
No need for any toolkit's, try to stay away of them and do it manually.

I know it isn't supported anymore. They still have the image's though.
Im just confused... Long time ago when I was really into all this, I just went to Googles page, downloaded the .zip and flashed it in TWRP. Now, the Google page is different and there isn't just 1 anymore. Can I just open the factory image and unzip the update part and flash that in TWRP?
The OTA files are only for updating from version to version correct? Can't go from what I'm on, 5.01 to the current 6.1 right? That's what I talking about and why I'm so confused now
Googles page used to have the OTA zip to update from prior newest to newest(5.0 to 5.01 for example) but than they also had the full OTA so you could do a 4.0 to 5.1 or whatever. Why they change the site? Which one do I use now to go from my 5.01 to current 6.1?

That's the pronlem, normally yes I would do that no problem. I'm in the middle of upgrading my PC after had a surge or something and fried my ****.
That's why I want to do it via TWRP like I always did before. Every time TWRP asked if I wanted to retain root after updating also. So what in the world happened in the last year that It doesn't seem like I can now? Like I said above, I can't find a full update OTA on!y the incremental OTAs...

Ok yes that's possible
If you have twrp already
Check development forum and choose one of the ROM.
Download it to your tablet plus gapps
Wipe system, cache and data leaving internal storage.
Flash ROM reboot, come back to twrp and flash gapps. ( Can do ROM + Gapps in one go)
Download SuperSU and flash to get root.
You can't flash stock image / OTA via twrp.
While you're doing all this try the 7.0 ROM its good enough now.

Ahhh what happened??? Why can you not flash them with TWRP???
Thats what I used to do no problem. Not referring to custom roms either.
I am wanting stock rooted.
I used to download the update when one was released from Google's site, put the update.zip in main directory, go in recovery and flash update.zip. TWRP would ask me if I wanted to keep root, I say yes, reboot, update installs... than i'm on the new Android version still rooted.
How is that not possible now?
I am so annoyed... I never had to go through ADB or fastboot to update to latest. I did everything on my N7, it kept root for me and everything.
I feel so dumb right now its ridiculous lol
So than what way can I go about updating my N7 2013 Wifi, which I currently have 5.01. I am Rooted w/ unlocked bootloader.
What is the best way not using ADB, or a PC at all for that matter to update to the latest, 6.01. If possible, how can I keep root, if not i'm not worried about it, i'll just re-root myself.
I appreciate all the responses, sorry if i'm just being an idiot. I just know for a fact I never had to use ADB or my PC to update and keep root...
I'm not familiar with Stock OTA done with twrp (if that's even possible)
Already told you get a custom ROM, get the one mostly stock or if there's a stock ROM in zip format available.
In future you might need to update that bootloader of yours for newer ROMs
Sorry if this sounds harsh why are you so into keeping root as you can't do it again? It's simple as flashing SuperSU. Root method changed after 6 you cant have old methods with 6.
Best bet for you at the moment.

Help updating ROM please

Hi guys, I'm on the international beta rom but it's quite outdated now and I'd like to get up to speed with the OTA's.
I download the full version for flashing in TWRP as i'm rooted but it asks for a password everytime.
Apparently I need to format the internal storage to get past this, but I don't want to lose all my apps and setup etc. Is there anyway to update without losing root and files etc?
Thank you in advance,
Andy
The beta is based on Android 7 Nougat, right? And the stable is currently still based on 6.0.1. If you mean you'd like to get back to the stable channel I think a clean flash is the only option. You might be able to restore your data via TWRP but I'm not sure if that's OK when downgrading from 7 to 6. Maybe someone else can confirm this.
I'd say the best option would be a fastboot clean flash of the full ROM and go from there. Then you can reflash TWRP.
thank you for your reply, but I'm not on nougat at the moment, I'm happy sticking to the beta channel but as I'm rooted I can't OTA update to newer beta version which would be nougat.
Cheers,
Andy

In that case, follow the steps I mentioned but using the Beta Fastboot ROM using the Mi Flash tool. Make sure you select "flash_all_except_storage.bat" and you'll keep your data and apps during the process. Once the device is booted, just make sure not to root and you'll be able to OTA to new beta roms when they are released.
Here's a link to the full list of Fastboot flashable ROMs. You didn't mention whether you're on Helium or Hydrogen, so make sure to pick the correct ROM for your device.
Good luck!

rooting and OTA?

hi all
assuming that i've flashed TWRP + rooted the phone
will i still be able to update the phone via OTA updates?
as this does not work on samsung phones once KNOX is tripped
i was wondering if it would be the same on oneplus devices
your input is appreciated. thanks!

Short answer: No. Custom recovery can't process the OTA update. There's another thread talking about this topic here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/help/root-update-ota-t3712615
If you want the latest updates Funk Wizard usually posts their full zips (not small OTA zips) on XDA (just search in the 5T section) and OnePlus usually has them under the device support page.
I've not tried it myself but I heard once you root and go to software update section oneplus will detect your root and instead will download a full OTA zip which you can then dirty flash in your custom recovery (TWRP) without any issues. of course the flash will remove root and then you will need to flash root zip file to gain root again.
Well, actually I downloaded latest OTA (4.7.4) over wifi and then updated phone while rooted and with custom recovery (oficial 3.2.0 I think). And it worked! I lost root in the process (I rooted again later), but otherwise phone was updated and it was done via custom recovery. So far, I don't have any problems, but not sure if any problems will come later.

wow for real?
so if you're rooted. it will not download small zips of OTA but instead the full sized OTA?
then we can choose to flash in TWRP instead?

How to install magisk in Oneplus 5T?

I have a OnePlus 5T locked and unrooted phone having OxygenOS 5.1.7 installed. I am new to rooting and related kinds of stuff. Can someone help me to give some instructions to install Magisk in my device? I know the below steps, but at the same time, I am having some questions in my mind.
1. Unlock bootloader - I saw some commands here to unlock bootloader - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74504347&postcount=4 - looks like these are outdated, last updated on Dec 2017. Are those work today also?
2. Install TWRP recovery - I heard that, OxygenOS 5.1.7 is having Project Treble supported. Can I use the same TWRP recovery mentioned in the above link?
3. Root using Magisk or SuperSU. What is the difference? What is systemless root? Anyway, I need to install Magisk Manager finally - Please suggest a way.
4. And the last one, How do I unroot my device if something goes wrong? Or is that possible?
5. I don't want to install any custom ROMs, I am fine with OOS.

1. Yes the unlock commands remain the same till date.
2. Use the latest bluspark twrp which has the treble support, link mentioned is fine and if you need the direct link, its here
3. Use the latest Magisk as SU is a dead project now.
4. Whenever you want to unroot just dirty remove/uninstall all the mods, dirty flash the latest stock rom > Factory reset in recovery and lock the bootloader. I did a post here for the 6T and it should work the same way on 5T.
5. You can stay rooted on OOS no need of custom roms any more :good:
Let me know if you want to know anything else, Thanks.

1. Yes, but your phone will download the whole firmware at each update instead of the ota.
2. Yes
3. Yep you can.
4. Yes of course, but some apps will detect root. So you will have to use Magisk Hide (inside the Magisk Manager) to hide root from these apps.
Note : I didn't use OOS anymore but it seems to me that OOS overwrites root everytime you update, so keep in mind that you will have to reflash it everytime

1- Yes, but you will recieve full sized zip (1.5+)GB automatically in rooted OOS. Incremental small sized ota won't work in case of root, and don't bother with it.
The downside of updating full whole zip is that you will loose root & twrp recovery after the update. So keep in mind, you will re-install both of them later.
2- I haven't tried beta, but i am sure yes
3- any switch between those requires clean flash in TWRP (wiping dalvik cache, cache, data, vendor and system). So, make sure to have backup in safe place.
4- yes, as long as you passed the safety net in Magisk. Magisk has a feature to hide root on certain apps of your choice, so you can use banking apps later
All my magisk installed whether in oos stable or custom roms, passed the safety net out of the box. So I haven't faced issues there.

some questions ^^

hello guys! im rooting phones some years now but first time im afraid to do that i see alot hard bricks etc so i want to ask
i have the last firmware now global (phone is global 2) if i put twrp for magisk i have to stop upgrade the phone right?
second. i never liked stock roms so again... if i put twrp i can flash whatever rom i want or there are steps every time so i wont brick the phone? thank u guys for ur time
dont do it
For rooting stock ROM, you can flash twrp and flash magisk but you should be careful to pick a recovery which is for android 10 and also not for CFW.
For flashing custom roms, you should read the megathread. It's not very complicated and if you follow the exact steps, you will not get bricked.

It's all explained in the megathread, sir. For custom ROMs you need CFW recovery but for you to be on CFW you need to flash CFW with a non-CFW recovery.
Best way to do it is in the CrDroid post.
Have a nice day!
tl;dr: flash Android 9 then megathread

i tried rooting with magisk on latest android 10 miui 11 , basically you will fail safetynet and basic integrity will fail as well you can try to hide fingerprint with magisk busybox and props module and type su to give termux root access and edit fingerprint to pixel 4 but it's not guaranteed i don't know if there is google attestation hardware in begonia anyways you can try.
here's a pic from pixel experience safetynet.(not rooted)
