What is broken and can it be fixed at home? - Xiaomi Mi Max Questions & Answers

Hi all!
My computers USB port was broken and it let all the electric through (don't know how to write these thing in english)
I connect my phone to the USB and don't know that.. then my phone only charge through computers usb and pc doesn't even try to recognize it.
Then i connected my microsd cardreader to same usb and i heard "puff" and smelld burning electric.
Phone does not smell like burned or anything. Working just fine.. it only doesn't work with data transfer.
So.. is it possible to fix by myself? like changing the usb dock https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1xvUoMVXXXXaoaXXXq6xXFXXXf/5PCS-For-Xiaomi-Mi-Max-Hexa-Core-6-44-Smartphone-USB-Charging-Port-Dock-Connector-Transfer.jpg
Or is my phone bricked forever and i cant use it through usb cable?
i hope that you all understand my problem, it's hard to write these thing different language

Anyone?

Replacing the usb dock piece will probably fix your problem and isnt very hard to replace and isnt very expensive from aliexpress. I cant post links but if you go to youtube and search "mi max disassembly" it will show you how to take apart the phone and get to the piece. i have taken myn apart before and it isnt very hard at all. Hope this helps

Sorry, it's not clear to me. Is there a problem with the USB port on your phone? Or only a problem with the USB port on your computer?
You may want to try a different USB cable. Sometimes the microUSB adapters can get worn out.

Problem is on the phone. Phone only charge from usb. Settings are ok.
Same usb port broke my Canon also. It has warranty and its fixed now. It was same way broken than my phone.
Computers usb is fixed now.

USB cable problems?

Hi folks,
i purchased a new usb cable today. its retractable, called 'Sync "N" Charge'. it is essentially the same connections as the stock usb connection cable.
the problem is when i try to connect my (Imate Jam) to my PC(winXPpro) it either freezes my pc, or puts up this msg.
USB device not recognised, one of the usb devices has malfunctioned, click here(opens up systems properties).
It does charge the Jam. well atleast the orange charge indicator lights up(i havent checked for actual charge).
The device drivers for my Jam are fine seeing as it still works when i connect with my original cable.
my original cable works fine, even if i switch straight back to it after trying to connect with the new cable.
I think the cable may be wired incorrectly eg postive and neg prolly fine but the data pins are screwie some how, sound like a reasonable guess?
Is there something else that im not thinking of/dont know about that could be causing the problem?.
bleh just typed all that and answered my own question. the data pins in the new plug are a little bit shorter than the power plug. I use a silicone case on my Jam which stops the plug from pushing in all the way by like 0.25mm. took off the case and bingo problem fixed.
I hate when that happens.
Ok well i might as well say that its a nifty little piece of hardware now that i got it working.
Which leads me another question, the reason i got this new cable was to be able to leave it in my bag and pull it out when i wanted to use my Jam like a 1gb usb card(1gb sd card). the times when i wanted to do this would be at university.
is there a way to make a pc recognise the jam like a usb drive instead of a pocketpc upon connection? i wont beable to install activesync on university pc's.
Thanks
Speedn

[Q] Fix bricked USB port

I've been having a lot of trouble trying to fix a bricked usb port. The phone doesn't charge when it's on, off, plugged into an outlet or USB port. The computer won't recognize it or even that it's plugged in. Also, I tried a fix where I downloaded two files "flash_image" and "mtd-eng.img" and did something with them in terminal. I was told to plug it into USB and do something in fastboot, I tried but obviously if the USB port is bricked that didn't work (just says waiting for device). I'm really at the end of my rope here. Any suggestions?
(I've been keeping it charged with a hacked up USB cable on the battery leads).
Sounds like a hardware issue at this point, one of the leads on the USB might be loose. Only thing I can think off is taking it in for repair.

How can I tell if my USB port is busted or my phone is corrupted? Only charges now.

Charging over USB works fine no matter the cable or the connection but it no longer will show up in Windows on any PC as a device. I tried flashing roms, changing cables, and doing the usb fix with Terminal listed in the sticky but it doesnt connect or will it know it's connected to a PC.
Can the port be broken so data no longer works but charging does?
its not the phone its the computer, try another computer

I have tried 3 which is why I wonder if my phone is broken, but it charges fine.
On all PCs the charge light comes on the phone with no problems but with all of them none of them detect a USB device being plugged in.,
Even in recovery if I do a USB-MS mount nothing happens.
Can the usb port break so that it charges with no issue but wont connect to a PC?

Does the phone recognize your sdcard?

I think the solution to your problem can be found in this fix
The USB port on my Evo 4G will charge but won't show up as as a device on my laptop. If I hold the USB cable at an angle, though, it does show up. I think mine is busted, maybe that's the case for yours.

Yup. Last night I completely wiped it and had the phone format and set it up fresh.

Do you think the cable is busted or the phone? I have tried multiple cables on multiple PCs and nothing happens.
So then it is possible for the phone to be unable to connect but still charge fine?

Have you tried mounting when in Recovery?
It really sounds like your cable is weird. The power lanes are on the edges for USB, meaning that the port on the phone is probably physically fine. The cable, however, is vulnerable to damage on any one of the four wires.
If nothing works, then perhaps something internal is busted. What do you need to transfer from your computer? Perhaps you can do it by connecting to your computer through WiFi for mounting the SD card and adb?
Its your USB port on you phone, theres 2 pins or smoething broken inside your phone thats causing the problem. I had the same problem on my Evo were it wouldnt connect as a storage device and would go into car dock mode. I took it to sprint and showed them the problem and they replaced my phone. As long as you dont have any physical damage such as the screen being cracked you should be fine and they should replace it free of cost.
Make sure that your cable is not one of those charge only, car charger type cables. Typical car charging cables don't transfer data.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. If I wiggle it just the right way the computer will see something but it will go away as fast as it shows up. Doubt Sprint will do anything as the phone is a few years old, I dropped the protection plan, and it's rooted to heck.
I'll just keep it running until this fall and upgrade when the new Nexus line comes out.
Hopefully.

RK3188 1024x600 front USB not working? Any workarounds?

I'm not able to get to the bootloader screen because the front usb port is not functioning on my unit. Has anyone been able to use one of the USB ports on the back to get to ADB and/or get to the bootloader? Is this a known issue with a workaround? I've done quite a bit of searching and have not turned up any solutions. Considering what is involved in shipping this back, I'd much rather figure something out. Thanks in advance for any help!
Edit: I should mention that I have used the adbon password and it does acknowledge that adb has been enabled. Just nothing seems to work on the front port. When I connect my Linux machine and run lsusb nothing shows for the unit. I have considered buying or making a USB-A to USB-A cable to connect my computer to one of the back USB ports, but I'm concerned about how these back USB ports are designed. Is it as simple as a built-in OTG cable? If so I'm probably fine. If it is more like a computer's USB port I could damage my laptop, my headunit, or both. I'd really like to hear if anyone else has had to deal with this. Unfortunately I haven't verified if the front USB will charge a phone. This is my next step.

My front USB also doesn't work. I even got mini to standard USB cable with unit, but plugging flash drive into it doesn't produce any reslt.
I also plugged extension cable to one of back USB ports and tried it (plugibg same USB flash) but it doesn't work either.
So I'm also confused.
Does that mean you are still running the stock ROM? I have been hesitant to install the custom ROM because they say you must be able to get into the bootloader even though I couldn't find a step in the process that required it.
Regarding the USB ports not working at all, you may find that you need to use a powered USB hub. I've seen reports of USB devices acting up due to the low power. This is one of the reasons I thought it might be safe to use the rear ports with my computer. (My first real test is going to be mangling a male-to-male USB cable so only the data lines are connected to see if I can get those rear USB ports to talk to the computer. I figure that way there is no chance of frying any circuits.. Each side already has its own power and I don't believe any signaling is sent via the power pins.)
On my unit (MTCB-KGL-V2.80), I have used a T-Mobile USB broadband modem successfully on the rear port, so I know rear ports are live. I did take it apart to see if something was obviously wrong with the front port, but nothing jumped out at me.
So I have a bit more information on my headunit. BTW, I have the BMW E46 model with MCU MTCB-KGL-V2.80.
On my system, both the front USB port and the rear 3G USB port are wired as device ports connected to an AU6258 USB controller (http://www.sunnyqi.com/upLoad/product/month_1403/201403162331285643.pdf). I don't remember exactly which USB ports they are connected to, but I believe the 3G port is connected to port 2 (pins 6 & 7) and the front USB port is connected to either ports 3 or 4 (pins 9 & 10 or 11 & 12 respectively). Nothing is connected to port 1 or to the upstream port. The other rear USB port is wired directly to the MTC_RK3188 board.
All three ports are wired with only four pins, so I'm concerned that none of them could work with the computer. The USB controller doesn't have USB ID pins, so does that mean that the 4 downstream ports are OTG and the upstream port is for a computer? Unfortunately I don't know the hardware side.

No I flashed Malaysk ROM from GPS SD card. No problems. Just follow instruction. I had luck that I didn't need to recover from USB.
Did you tried with USB powered hub? I don't have one to try it myself.

I checked on my Linux workstation with
Code:
lsusb |wc -l
plugging and unplugging all three USB cables and the number did not change. BTW where did you use the "adbon" command? The only place that I could even try was at Settings > Factory Settings. Regards Flint

Problems with USB connection

I had been somewhat unlucky and while charging my beloved FLO something went puf (literally). After that I don't have any USB connectivity. Charging my N7 works (very slowly), but no USB OTG or USB ADB. OK Fine and dandy if I wouldn't be total idiot and wipe system while trying to install new ROM before transferring ROM image to internal storage.
Now I have FLO paper clip able to go to TWRP but can't install nothing. As far I understand there's no way to enable wifi in TWRP.
Any ideas what would needed to be replaced to make my FLO work again so I can put some ROM on it and make it work again.
I'm not sure if USB daughter board would suffice and solve my problem. Any suggestions?

Either the USB port developed "dry joints" or the wide silver cable (LCM) needs to be re-seated on both connectors.
Disconnect the battery before fixing LCM cable. Here is advice on USB port repair.
Replacing the daughterboard PCB should be the last resort because it is unlikely that the touch function will work 100%. It would work if we had access to the touch calibration software - the problems are described here https://forum.xda-developers.com/ne...rivers-to-calibrate-touch-screen-usb-t3334898

I doubt re-seating would help or cleaning USB port, since it was something electrical happening with that *puf*. If my memory serves me right there was a smell of burnt electronics. I doubt that some shortage disconnected any cables.

Sounds like you need a new charging port and board. Easy to fit but difficult to get hold of one. Maybe purchase a broken Flo on eBay and extract the charging port board

Even tho charging works? The only problem is data part of USB connection. USB OTG will not work neither will it connect to a PC for file transfer/adb. But if connected to PC or plug device charges. I believe it will not charge past 80 or 90%.
