Time to take control of sons phone - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My son is 15 and I believe that he is becoming enslaved to porn. He comes home and heads straight for his room only coming out to eat. He says that he is watching youtube but no one spends 5 to 7 hours watching Youtube. He used to spend considerable time playing video games on his laptop. Now he just lays under the sheets looking at his phone with his headphones on. This could be very serious. I had a friend in junior high who became addicted to porn and developed a serious mental disorder. He didn't leave his bedroom for nearly 10 years.
I finally took away his phone. I want to inspect it just to see exactly what's going on. It has a lock screen pin and I don't know the account information although I may be able to gain access to it to unlock the phone from device manager. I really just want to find out what other options I have to get into his phone before I do a hard reset and attempt a Google Account Bypass hack. I need to install a monitoring apk like Cerberus to exact more control over his phone as well.
I'm not trying to get access to a phone that I'm not authorized to. And I understand that I can't prove that either but any information about what I can do to help my son would be awesome.
The phone is the LG G4 VS991 with Android 6.1

Not sure I can help you with the phone, but why don't you talk to your son instead? Confronting him and taking away his phone may not be the best way to deal with this. Kids nowadays unfortunately have access to porn from many places, phones, computers, tablets, etc. And if it's not their phone, it's one of their friends'. So taking away the phone may not get you very far, it probably just undermines any trust relationship he has with you.
So see if you can find out by talking to him what is really going on with your son, and see if you can make him understand that he needs to control himself. Also I think a lot of people watch porn, and rarely it turns into a serious mental disorder. He is a young teenage boy, his carnal desires are taking over, but I can understand based on your past experiences that you don't want this to turn into a problem.

Really don't do it this way. Technically it may be possible but don't break the trust you have with your son.
I cannot tell you WHAT you should do but I can say that doing it this way will make things even more worse!
This sounds more like a problem need to be solved another way.
...and keep in mind that he is in an age where porn becomes very interesting. The most important step is taken when he has a real girlfriend where he just do not needs those videos anyways.
But nevertheless this discussion is nothing for this forum..
.

Thank you both for your thoughts. On not the best dad in the world and I know that. I will consider other options. Thanks again.

No just be not that hard with yourself. It's just the way to go. Making worries means you love your son and that is the most important!

but he is 15....

If you can crack his phone, might want to consider applying for the NSA.

Believe me, there are legions of people that do exactly this. I think it's less likely for someone to spend 5-7 hours watching porn.

Might be watching Netflix, downloaded TV series, listening to music, watching YouTube. This is not proof of a porn addiction at all.

See, that's the thing. You *aren't* trying to access a phone you're not authorized to. You're his father so you have every right to check his activity. However, why can't you just sit him down and have a good talk? Why go behind his back and set the wrong example? He'll only feel distrusted and will be deterred from coming to you when he might want to with questions or issues.
I don't think it's a bad idea to simply ask him what he does on his PC, maybe he can show you what he's doing. Maybe he has a new interest you could share. And maybe it is porn, but then at least you can have a healthy conversation about the good and the bad sides.

maybe facebook whats app . youtube and yes maybe a little bit of porn. dont worry about it. as long as its not gay porn. we all go thru that. we love porn and yes when he gets a girlfriend porn will be not in priority. i watched porn LOL i have porn. who doesnt ... i want to ask the father DID YOU WATCHED PORN???
we all did. so itll be okey. but as a son when parent spies on you its worst, thats not cool. as long as its drugs i agree to know what hes doing but for porn. let him explore.

Remote browsing? (and other stuffs and fluffs)

Hello ladies, gents, killer droids and aliens.
A somewhat long time lurker finally decided to register myself
Anyway, it seems quite likely that I'll pull trigger on one Desirable droid in a near future.
But I have to know couple of things before I dive in head first into the world of droids.
So if any of you could answer those questions, it would be... in the word of Borat, "Very nice" Here goes nothing!
1. Is it possible to browse files in my PCs on my LAN via WLAN from desire?
2. If so, is it possible to stream files (mp3s and avi most likely) from there to be played on desire?
3. Lastly, can desire handle WPA2-PSK?
Cheers!
In answer to your first two, yes (using EStrongs File Explorer, although I'm sure other apps will do it too) and a hesitant yes. Hesitant because I use the Subsonic media server to do just that but that might not be what you're after. Not sure if anything else can do it as I haven't tried. Subsonic is incredibly easy to set up though, and a one-time donation gives you Android streaming for life.
Not sure about the third as my home uses standard WPA for legacy reasons. I'd be extremely surprised if it didn't though.
Hey thanks for a quick answer!
Hm that subsonic seems like it's only meant for music and not for movies and such hmm...
Well the reason I asked about WPA2 is that my other handhelds such as DS and PSP aren't supporting it in the first place (which is a kind of bummer, but I will never lower security for play stuff online in any case)
Yes to number 3.. i use that encryption at home and the desire connects no problem...

Ah yes, sorry, Subsonic is just for music, but it does that music very well!
Can't help with video streaming, but it wouldn't surprise me to see something that does it. There's already the Youtube and Beebplayer apps so it can't be hard to do the same for LAN based videos.
Thanks micks & Noiz!
Well, you can come quite far with couple of gigs of music (besides I already have iPod nano) but TV series and such are bit bigger than mp3s you know? So I wasn't all that sure if I wanted to transfer everything to the phone.
BTW are there any competent program which can run divx without any hitch? or is the "convert the avi file to something else" the way to go?
ATM converting to mp4 with x264 is the way to go. unfortunately.
I recall reading something about somthing, like "Divx playback out of the box" and that kind of fluff regarding Desire before...
Was it pure 100% BS then? .... sigh ....

BS? No.
Available out of the box? No.
Coming "soon" to an OTA update near you? Yes.
"soon" IE.... next year?
I've seen the slow update on the Hero, so I won't be holdning my breath on this.
(The very reason I didn't go for Hero in the first place, painfully slow updates)

I really wish I could be more specific, but "soon" is as close as it gets.. Hence putting it in quotes.
For now, I'd convert using something like Handbrake. Not an ideal solution as you always lose some of the quality when cross converting, but it's the best solution for the moment.
Yeah I understand that, that's the reason I asked "next year?"
Well, I guess the quality itself won't bother me, after all, it's just on 3.7inch screen.
The main "trouble" as I see is that, it takes such tremendious time converting files.
I mean it takes more time to convert file than show itself you know?
The reason I stopped watching stuff on my PSP, it just took way too much time.
the one worry i'd have about streaming is data usuage... if your on 3g etc.. if you have wi fi handy then great.. but i'd imagine streaming over 3g would eat data quite quickly
Oh I was talking about while I'm on my own network.
So no worries there. Thank you for your concern tho.
But your post reminds of me something, but is kinda OT, should I start a new thread about that, or should I keep going here?
Since nobody's protesting, I'll just go ahead and ask it.
I feel a bit torned about how much data plan I'll be using.
I will be checking and sending around 10 mails avg a day, maybe some net surfing (nothing heavy duty) maybe couple of youtube vids, no twitter or facebook.
Will 500mb/month suffice or will I use it up within couple of days? LOL
I srsly have no idea, so any insight will be appreciated!
well i have 50 megs per day (dont ask irish plans are $hite) actually its a pay as you go contract.. 50 megs a day for 99 cents.. never go over that to be honest.. i have email client on and browse the web a bit.. and market place.. wouldnt watch video etc or do streaming unless i'm on wireless network... i think unless your doing streaming or sending large emails you'd do well to use 500 in a month.. i know guys who are on 250mb for a month and they say it doesnt them fine..

I think it really depends on your usage. I suggest a data monitoring app such as 3G Watchdog. Run it for a few days and it'll give you a good guage as to how much data you're using.
Well micks, when you think about it you have 50mb a day!
that's total sum of 1.4 gig per month!
So it's like 3 times more than I was thinking about after all.
Fatman, true, however, the provider here are sneaky bunch who allows custmers upgrade on plan, but not downgrade!
Choises choises, just way too many choises tbh.
I have to decide if I gonna go for Legend or Desire in the first place.
I mean Legend got some seriously sexy outershell! But desire shines with raw poweeeerrr.
I'm just asking myself why HTC didn't make legend shell with desire internals!

any tweak for full screen youtube?

any tweak for full screen youtube? there are 2 apps in the market please and neither play on full screen on the HD7...
Looks like we need something like 3G Unrestrictor (iPhone app) that fools the phone into thinking it has a wi-fi connection.
Or a setting in the YouTube app that allows you to select high quality.
I assume that, like on the Omnia 7 ,you get full screen video when using wi-fi?
Well that sucks.
well tried the wi-fi route and no luck...

Dude, you don't even have a WP7 yet you're in every thread commenting gleefully whenever there is negative news. That or informing us of how bad we have it.
Are you just trying to increase comment count?
To the topic, this really needs to be addressed as I found out the hard way while showing my buddies a funny soccer video at the bar. I was ashamed of my phone

+1. This trolling is getting quite annoying.
Me lady has one, I'm messing around with it daily. Still considering one myself, so eat those apples.
Not my fault if your feelings get hurt so easily. Troll that.
lol here we go the haters again...it was a simple question...the phone is awesome...i can live without it no probs..i thought i may be missing a setting somewhere...
Wow, I figured this was just something at&t did to artificially throttle data usage, but I see that others are getting this, too. Looking forward to when someone nips this little nuisance. There are already easy workarounds to enable HSUPA and to get the phone to prefer 3G instead of kicking down to EDGE just by using the diagnosis code menu, which have made my new toy much more enjoyable. It'll be nice when I can blast out YouTube content on my pretty samoled.
Not YouTube, but some good news

This might just be a youtube thing.
I have a couple of apps that stream movie trailers and video podcasts and the the video quality range from acceptable to stunning.

I dunno... 33 feet is kinda limiting... I'm not allowed my phone during work either and 33 feet isn't even enough to get outta my office and into the hallway lol, I could never see myself spending the money on something so trite, however; for others I can see how the application dictates it would be a worthwhile investment, sounds kewl to me nonetheless!
sent from my SGS2 running AOKP, eh...
This is just my opinion and not my suggestion. I'm a little anti authority kind of person. That being said, regardless if I had the watch or not, I would keep my phone in my pocket but with all sounds turned off and probably vibrate turned off too. If it vibrated when you were near someone, and they heard it, they might tell on you. I would not keep my phone in a locker because it could be stolen. I will not leave it at home obviously. I will not leave it in the car because of the extreme heat and possibility of theft. I would only check my phone if I was in a locked bathroom or stall or in my car. I wouldn't risk it anywhere else that there were people around. If I did get caught and given the choice of the phone or the job, I'd not back down. I would say that I would need it on me in case of a local or personal or family emergency. A job is probably saying that because a few people would blatently screw around or talk on their phones and not work. That doesn't mean you run to the bathroom every five minutes to check your phone or hold a text conversation with someone either.

In many cases, like mine, it's nothing to do with productivity, we are not allowed phones on site, period. Or radios. Or USB sticks. Or...
I have worked without access to my mobile for the last 16 years and never missed anything important, we have proper phones at work if there is an emergency...
I would think anyone willing to risk their job for the sake of having a phone in their pocket should maybe reassess their priorities a little, especially in the current econmomic climate.

The app that saved my son a ton of headache!

My Son's are attending Baylor University, and as we all know College kids can be a little wild sometimes. My youngest was recently roughed up pretty good by Campus PD. No matter the story or reasons and besides the bias that I have due to him being my son, the arresting Officer lied about the reasons for arrest and illegal search. (Bambuser) is a recording app that streams video and uploads it to the net. It can live broadcast or save for later sharing. I'm glad he took my advice to record all interaction with Police and also used this app. It really saved his hide. Based on his video using this app, the case was dismissed and PD has to replace his phone. The Officer broke his phone and took the SD card.... The app has a screen timeout feature where it is still recording even though the screen will go blank.
sure sounds like an advertisement, but good for your son. Good thing he was quick-witted enough to pull out his phone, open up the app, and start recording, all while getting "roughed up."
Thanks for sharing, it sounds good to have something like this off hand. At least for where I live where Philadelphia and Bensalem police are corrupt as a fact in the news....without any corrective action taken since last reported with evidence a few years back

[Q] Blocking guarddad off on my phone

Hey guy, so my mom is super protective and all this junk and im 16 years old and a guy im not that bad of a kid so theres no need for this plus a total invasion of privacy. They bought this thing its called guarddad for 70$ ! and they dont know i know about it. but it sees all text incoming and out, if i take a pic from my camera they can see it all call logs internet and all this crazy ****. i want it off or blocked, i want my phone on total lockdown with full privacy i have a sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 rooted. Please help
I had to Google it to find it, it's an interesting program. This isn't going to be what you want to hear, but it seems she is looking out for you. Moms do that, all through life. With all of the horrible things online she is worried about you. My suggestion, instead of going behind her back, is to talk with her about it. I don't think you will get the help you were expecting from this place. XDA is for development, not hacking.

It's actually called DadGuard. It is invasive, that's why I suggested he needs to talk to them about it.

Wow. This app extremely blurs the line between overprotectiveness and outright 24/7 monitoring.
But won't they notice when they stop receiving the logs of everything you do? I mean, even antivirus programs will notify you once the online service detects that you haven't used the app in several days and such. I'm fairly sure this app would have some sort of safeguard like that.

I was thinking the same thing with regards to both parts of this post. However, I hope this brat teenager does flash this "fix" and get in trouble. If he thinks he is so wise to the ways of the world and is so capable of taking care of himself, he can feel free to move out/get kicked out and then:
Pay rent/mortgage
Pay utilities/electric/water/etc.
Pay for groceries
Pay for car/insurance
Pay for TV/internet/etc.
Cook/clean/do laundry for himself
And oh yeah, presumably attend high school every day.
What an ungrateful little punk. He needs to understand that parents have the best interests of their kids at heart, and parents have already gone through teenage life themselves.
