ROM's after bootloader unlock and root?

Is it ok to flash a ROM after i have unlocked my bootloader and rooted or do I absolutely have to have S-Off first? I have looked around and searched and googled first and found no answer to this question. Any help is greatly appreciated!

You can flash a rom without being s-off but you need to manually flash the boot.img file.

Has anybody tried fastbooting the recovery img into the phone's memory?
Like this:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-vivow.img

All that will do is boot you into recovery .
If you use fastboot , the command would be like
"Fastboot flash recovery <name of recovery.img>"

I had read somewhere that if you boot into recovery in the phone's memory instead of from the partition, the recovery will be able to write to the boot partition - so no need to flash the boot.img separately.
I haven't tested this myself, though.

I tried a few guides on this, my advice would be that you take the utmost care when attempting this, I almost blew it and couldn't install any rom until I tried viperx

I checked my warranty using fastboot getvar all command warranty shows no. what to do now????
Only relocking the boot loader won't do anything for you.
Stock recovery is required to flash the ota update. An modified recovery will not flash the ota lollipop update

Sense your unlocked you can flash a custom recovery using fastboot as i would use twrp. An then download supersu.zip an flash it in your newly installed twrp recovery. An now you are rooted.
Maybe I didn't explain properly my bootloader is not unlocked yet, just wanted to know since the update is there a new root method....? Thanks for replying

nbd. You should be able to use htcdev.com to unlock your bootloader Or you can go the s-off way(which I recommend) use the sunshine app for s-off(if your device is capable of s-off now) an if it is sunshine will s-off an unlock for you an then do what I said above post. Those r really your only 2 choices.
FYI you will need to be on either of the latest two twrp versions to install su binaries properly if you have issues. Sunshine wouldn't work for me but its really easy to unlock bootloader and install twrp and su
If i'm s-off already I should be able to run the latest RUU to get me up to date with the firmware and then flash TWRP and then a rom correct?

You could do that yes. Or just flash the firmware zip an then flash twrp an flash updated ROM an you r up to date....if you run ruu it will wipe your device so backup your stuff to a PC or external an then proceed with ruu an flashing twrp then ROM. After you flash twrp I recommend strongly to make a backup of stock before you wipe to flash new ROM.

I guess i'm confused because of my Hboot being on 3.19. I've been wondering if there is a need to run a higher Hboot that probably came out with the new OTA, but the VenonRom 4.2 has been running with no problems. So i guess what I am really trying to achieve is upgrading HBoot and Radio.

Those r removed. Why you wonder because if boot.IMG is included an your on a custom ROM that don't use stock boot.IMG an modules you will be in a boot loop till you fastboot your ROM boot.img an recovery is removed because who wants a stock recovery to replace twrp then you have to flash your twrp back. Make sense to you?

Is there a need to return to a Stock Rom? I am currently on Viper.

fastboot boot recovery.img

just wandering if I can fastboot boot recovery.img even Im lock bootloader? if not can I backup on recovery just by booting it? together with the stock recovery since it has a choice also to back up recovery?
thanks for those who will help
btw im still lolipop and not planning to upgrade on android M maybe on the future so I need the stock backup
anyone can help?
No .. you can't fastboot boot recovery.img with a locked bootloader.
I never do backup by booting the recovery so I can't answer that .. and I don't think TWRP has a selection to backup stock recovery .. maybe other recovery can but I never try.
What's your software version no. ? Maybe I have the stock non-rooted backup and stock recovery.img in my thread linked in my signature .. that will save you all the hassle of doing what you are trying to do.
