Sim Slot Damaged - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Hi, I am from Hyderabad, India. I recently purchased the Motorola Z play using flipkart. While inserting the sim in the first slot, i saw that the sim wasn't detected. I tried pulling out the tray and again put it in the second slot and still not detected. I asked for a replacement. Flipkart sent a technician who says that the sim card might have damaged the sim slot while pulling. But he agreed that the sim card perfectly fit into the slot. Now, both flipkart and motorola service center refuses to replace/repair the phone. They say they have to change the entire motherboard because of this which would cost me like Rs 14000, when I purchased the phone at Rs 21000. How is this fair? What are the options available for me? What can I do so that they repair me my phone. Isn't it Motorola's fault that they create a product with such defects that pulling out a fitting sim too causes such damage? I am already tensed and losing my sleep over it. Please help.

Did you remove the sim tray using the tool provided with the phone? If you did it as the manual says and the sim card you used was fine I believe warranty should cover it.
In Brazil we have an consumer protection organization that you can register a complaint for things like that, and it usually works. Is there any organizations like that in India?

1) I did pull out the sim tray using the tool provided. The sim card I used was actually cut from a micro-usb, but it fit properly into the sim tray.
2) We have a consumer forum in India, which maybe used to redress the above. I am still looking into it. But I am not sure how far it can go to refund me.

I think the sim got damaged during cutting. Try going to the sim retailer and ask for a nano sim. I did the same and went to idea to get a replacment for my microsim to nano sim and got a free nano sim and it was activated in 20 mins. If not, go to consumer court immediately.

No, the sim isn't the concern, its the sim slot of the mobile that got damaged. Anyways, I got a nano sim from vodafone store, after this, I wasn't aware of it. But, I dunno what else to do about the sim slot other than repairing it any local shop and breaking the warranty.

you can try writing to lenovo again, as only the sim slot needs to be replaced and you can pay them for it. But if they still insist on changing the motherboard, take them to consumer court. Better take a jobsheet from lenovo or any email print outs where you can prove they are not ready to repair.

Note ii & vodafone uk micro sim cards

Hello there,
has anyone got a note ii with vodafone micro sim card running fine?
I have inserted several micro sim cards from vodafone, including at two vodafone stores, sadly non of them get recognised. Could my note ii be faulty?
I need to know this so that I can return it to Handtec UK.
Thanks for the heads up.

I have no problem with mine.Bought from CPW and took the vodafone micro sim from my SG3.A self cut down vodafone PAYG sim card worked as well.
Seems like your N2 is faulty.

It is very strange because I have a pay as you go vodafone micro sim card that works just fine, as does a t-mobile micro sim from my s 3.
The trouble is with the contract micro sent to me, as well as the ones I tried today.
Also, when you look at the chips on the micro sims, the t-mobile as well as the vodafone pay as you go micro sims are longer than the chips on the others. When voda sent the micro to me, it read iPhone/iPad. The assistants in the voda stores claim the micro sim is said to be for iPad/iPhone, but should work in any phone designed to take micro sim cards.
I got mine from Vodafone as upgrade. It comes with a micro sim. It has been working fine for me for the last 2 weeks.

I have tried O2, tmobile, gifgaff, and an Asian roaming sim card with mine and they all work. Are you saying the sim card from voda is not the same size as the one that works? Maybe they are NANO sim cards and the contacts dont line up with your Note 2. So they don't work. Or if they are for iphone, then they are for iphone, which is trying hard to monopolise the industry, but will NEVER happen! Phuck apple devices !!!!
Probably vodafone are giving me non cards, because as I said, their pay as you go has a longer chip. The trouble is that the guys in the stores can see this, but insist the "nano" should work?

They're giving you nano-sims?
Unless you're inserting them with an adapter I doubt they'll work as the note 2 is designed to take micro sims, not nano sims. Nano sims are a bit smaller.

I just don't know what is up with these sim cards. I was on chat with a voda customer rep. He will be sending out another sim card. I hope it works. I advised him to look at the lengths of the chip itself, and get to me one that equals the length of their PAYG micro sim cards.
I will let you know how I get on in three to five working days, which is when the sim might be with me.
I cut mine with scissors... I couldn't wait long enough to drive 5 miles to the nearest store haha

Actually it's funny because I've tried to insert nano simcard by a mistake and it actually works (DON'T THINK ABOUT DOING THIS). I hope it won't move while being inside or I'm screwed. It was already too late when I realized that nano sim card is different from micro sim. Guess I was too excited to try this phone out.
The screenshots were taken with SG Note 1 and I kept the resolution unchanged.
Don't ask me how did I do it, because I don't know it myself.

I also made calls with it and it's working just fine.

Yeah I'll have to buy an micro sim adapter for the peace of mind.
You can purchase micro sim cutters; or use one as a template. I've had no issues with my normal sim cut with scissors. Hell, I wonder why they decided to go the micro-sim root anyway. Complicates things.

I am currently using my micro sim from my iphone 4 on the note 2 and had no problems. I have been using the same sim on the day of the launch of note 2 and it's been fine.
Could the moderators please close this thread?
My issue has been resolved. The micro sim card tray was faulty.
I posted my phone back to Handtec on Wednesday. They received it yesterday, and I have received a new replacement today.
They are excellent for delivering quality in time. One day between the original order and delivery, one day between return/warranty and replacement.
If they could do it in one day, they would.

[Q] Broken sim slot

Still don't know how, maybe I have insterted my sim in the wrong way, but this morning i couldn't take it out from the simcard slot. After taking it out, i noticed that the sim is now scratched. Since then, my phone doesn't read my sim anymore (tried with 2 different ones) I guess something's broken in the simcard slot. Does anyone know if it's expensive to replace it? I use an adapter for nanosim, I guess that's the problem (which won't be anyway unde warranty I think)
Hello Gibihr,
If I'm not misstaken tge simslot is mounted on the motherboard and to replace it you'll have to replace the entire motherboard.
Hope that you'll get your phone back up and running,

I've just got the Z1c so I don't know if the sim card reader is a part of the MB and certainly hope not. I had a similar experience with the xperia Go where I damaged the sim card reader but trying to insert a micro sim with an adapter instead of a normal sim. Anyways the phone was fixed at the customer care center by replacing the sim card reader. They charged me though...the equivalent of 20Euros...not too expensive. I hope your phone would be fixed the same way.

Try doing a factory reset.
If it's sold on ebay that means that it can be replaced.

Did you try simcard in diff phone first or try another simcard in the phone? Because ive had simcards die before. Might wanna try before you think about messing with internals
i was getting a "cannot detect sim car" error and the phone rebooting the other day. I took the sim card out, blew in the area and put sim card back and haven't had any issues since. Maybe try this?

Does anyone know where I can buy the sim card holder?

By sim card holder I mean the thing I put the sim card onto to slide into the phone.

Dual sim tray in single sim model?

I'm going to be traveling internationally in a few months, and more than likely going to end up on a local SIM where I'm going for while I'm there.
On the single SIM tray there appears to just be a spacer molded into the tray where a second sim would go in the dual sim version. I'm thinking about ordering a dual SIM tray from China on eBay (10 bucks) so I can use the second sim slot in the tray as storage for my not in use sim.
Anyone know of any reason this shouldn't work? I can't think of any reason it shouldn't...

You'll have to flash a dual sim firmware package but there's issues with flashing firmware that's not what originally was installed on your moto z play.
You could ultimately loose your IMEI , Which would render your phone useless.
It's just easier to sim unlock and insert a single sim.

I'm already sim unlocked (have the US unlocked version courtesy of republic). My intention is to only use whichever sim is in slot 1. I'll manually pull the tray and switch sim positions when I need to switch. I just want the second slot as dead storage space for the unused sim card. Just wondering if there's something physical in the guts of the single SIM version that could be damaged by or cause damage to the unused sim in slot 2 of the tray. Or if there's something physically different about the dual SIM tray that will not allow it to fit in the single SIM version of the device.
Definitely no flashing of dual SIM firmware happening on this device.
You should be fine. Just make sure that the active sim goes in the same slot as where it would go in the single-sim tray and the inactive sim go in the spare slot. It's a good way to not lose a sim card. I was thinking of doing this for my single-sim, carrier variant Moto x play, but never bothererd.

Thanks. Avoiding losing a sim while on my trip is my primary reason for doing this. Guess I'll give it a shot!
Update:
Received dual Sim tray from China today (13 days order to door, $10 shipped on eBay)
Visually compared both, they seem basically identical, with the exception of some type of serial number sticker on the original single Sim tray.
Fit isn't quite perfect - the angle of the outer piece of the tray isn't quite right, so it's a tiny bit recessed into the edge of the phone on one end, and slightly raised on the other end. Enough to be visually noticed if you're looking for it, and can be felt running a finger nail over the seam between the edge of the phone and the Sim tray. Don't believe it's enough to present any "catch" issues if running naked, and a total non issue if using a case or bumper.
No apparent functional issues - device connects fine using Sim 1 slot in tray. Did not feel any unusual resistance when inserting tray with both Sims aboard. Obviously doesn't see the Sim in slot 2.
Nice to be able to carry both my Sims with me, worry free. Worth the money for my use case.
