[ZE550KL] ZenFone 2 Laser only has Fastboot - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I need some expert help and guidance. All of a sudden this phone decided to brick itself and I'm suspecting a hardware fault.
I've tried all the tutorials under the sun to reflash the device from fastboot, however I am now at a loss.
Recovery [power+down key] won't start - regardless which one I try. Essentially it would write the files with [OK] messages but it never really acts on them.
The phone was completely stock MM. Is there some good soul that can guide me with reviving this phone please?
Many thanks!

Can you access recovery by pressing power + volume up to get into fastboot and then select the Recovery using the volume and power key?

yes no problem getting to [fastboot mode!!!]. From there I tried to re-flash stock boot and recovery img files and it doesn't complain - however from fastboot, booting to recovery fails (ie. power+volume down] with a black screen.
Am thinking that this might be the most viable option right now -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-2-laser/help/links-asus-zenfone-2-laser-raw-service-t3526083

Sad day.. after running the flashall_AFT.cmd in one of the firmware files in the above thread, the processed ended with an error writing the userdata... slowly and surely, the screen faded away and the unit won't turn on at all.
I guess, this is the end of the road for my Zenfone 2 Laser

[HELP] HTC One X - Unable to access recovery or bootloader

So, started going through the process of rooting and installing a custom ROM onto my HOX.
Got the phone rooted and downloaded the ROM, but unintentionally missed the step to install a custom restore e.g. ClockWork.
The issue I have now is that the phone starts up gets to the HTC One screen and sits there indefinitely.
So my issue is - I am unable to access either recovery or the bootloader to enter fastboot and clear the cache or start the process fresh and avoid this situation in the future.
Any help on the matter or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Switch phone off, then hold vol down button in and switch on (keep vol down pressed) you should then boot into bootloader mode and can flash recovery.img from there

while on the white HTC ONE screen, plug the USB to computer, try to ADB REBOOT BOOTLOADER or ADB REBOOT RECOVERY. That is IF the ADB can still detect your device, but I doubt that it couldn't.

Nexus 7 2013 stuck at Google screen

So, I was using my Nexus during my class today and it was working great.
After class, I walked to my next class with the tablet in my hand, I did not drop it or anything, when I got to my next class the lock screen was unresponsive.
I was still able to take a screen shot, so the tablet wasn't frozen, but the touch screen was not working at all. All of the hardware buttons worked fine.
I let it sit for about 2 hours and the problem persisted.
I just did a soft reset, holding the power button down for 10 seconds, and it shutdown and rebooted, but its now stuck on the Google screen.
Anyone know what is wrong or how I can fix it?
Thank you

Have you tried entering bootloader?
[Info] Guide to entering safe mode, bootloader, stock recovery
I really doubt you are in bricked mode or it wouldn't even show google. If it is stuck on google it is having trouble loading the OS.
Most likely you can go into fastboot mode and just flash your /system and it will begin working again with no loss of data.

My device is not rooted at all.
I've had it for 2 days.
I have to say, I am very disappointed in all of these issues.
I would return it..I'm sorry to hear that I have had troubles myself with two devices so far

Did you specifically try to get into bootloader mode using the post I mentioned.
You need to Press Power+VolDown continuously until the bootloader menu comes up?
The fact that you are getting to the Google screen at all means your bootloader is still working so I find it hard to understand why you wouldn't be able to get into bootloader mode.

It was not working, but my tablet just died and I was able to charge and get into the bootloader.
Now to see if it will work.

Well since you are getting stuck on Google, that means your ROM (/system) is not loading.
I would flash boot.img and system.img from the factory restore.
http://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#razor
The restore is in .tar.gz format and within the tar there is a zip file. Within that zip file is boot.img and system.img. You need to extract those (ungzip, then untar, then unzip) and place them in your adb directory.
Boot your tablet into bootloader mode, connect the USB cable, make sure it is recognized as android bootloader interface.
Type
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
assuming no errors
fastboot reboot
If on the reboot you still get stuck, push and hold Power for 30-60 seconds and try again.
Fails a second time, something more serious is probably wrong.
If you get stuck on X instead of Google, that means something may be wrong with your user data. Try the 60 second reboot thing again. If it is still stuck on X, boot into recovery and do a wipe data factory reset. See previous post for how to get into recovery.

I figured out where to type, but I have to unlock my bootloader?

You don't need to enable USB debugging for fastboot mode.
You just need to press Power+VolDown until you get into the bootloader. That is fastboot mode. It will install Android Bootloader Interface (usb debugging does android debug bridge interface)
I actually didn't realize you weren't unlocked. If that is the case, the unlock process will erase your userdata, so you might as well just do the full factory restore.
First goto bootloader mode using Power+VolDown and connect USB, type
fastboot oem unlock
You'll see a question on the tablet screen, Press VolUp to go to yes and Power to select.
On the command prompt in windows, you should see it erase userdata and cache.
On the bootloader screen it should have "Start" highlighted (if not, use VolDown to cycle until you see "Start"). Press Power to accept. You should see Google, then it'll go into recovery and format userdata and cache. It'll then try to boot and since /system is having issues, you'll be stuck in Google again.
Go back into bootloader mode, hold Power+VolDown for a while until you see the bootloader screen.
Now grab the factory image as above, gunzip, untar, and you should have a folder razor-jss15j
Copy these files from your adb directory to the razor-jss15j directory
adb.exe
fastboot.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
In command prompt in the razor-jss15j directory, type
flash-all
It should output a bunch of stuff, essentially writing a factory image to your tablet.
When it is done, it'll reboot and hopefully you'll get the initial setup window.
I wrote this up from memory, so hopefully I didn't forget stuff. If something doesn't seem right just ask.
Thanks for all of your help.
It really means a lot you took the time to help me.
I'm going to Best Buy today and I am going to see if I can do an exchange.
If not, I will try this later.
Again, thank you

Bootloop even when in recovery mode

Hi guys,
I have a nexus 7 2013 which boot loop (or any watchdog restart ?).
If I try to normal start this one, I will get the Google logo for few seconds, then it will restart on its own.
If i press the volume down during this process, I can boot to bootloader, but same way, after few second, device will restart.
Any clue on what can be wrong ?
Thanks

Hello, connect external power and try again. If it works now, you will have to replace the battery.
If it does not work with external power and it can not stop in bootloader/fastboot mode, then the hardware is faulty or the bootloader is corrupt.
External power does not change anything. Still boot loop, so really should be a hardware issue.
If I keep volume up key pressed, it boots, but almost unusable if I have to continuously press the volume up key.
Same when in bootloader: if I continuously press the volume up key, it does not reboot.
I've tried to erase everything with fastboot, but cannot do most of the operation. When trying to format data, it says that partition does not exists (it exists, as it can boot !)
Bootloader is locked, so cannot go with TWRP for example, as I cannot validate the on screen confirmation needed to oem unlock.
Do you know any way to unlock bootloader without use of onscreen confirmation ?
I don't know if that would help, but when I was installing Lineage OS and updated TWRP, I also boot looped once on recovery (recovery itself was boot-looping), and re-downloading (from another browser) and re-installing recovery at fastboot mode fixed my issue.
I cannot unlock the bootloader because of this issue, so cannot flash anything
Could be broken power button, if it is stuck and pressing it continuously.
Are you able to reach your recovery to factory reset?
I mean can you reach it from the bootloader menu?
If not you could try to put twrp.img or recovery.img into your PC adb&fastboot folder and try
fastboot boot twrp.img
or
fastboot boot recovery.img
Don't know if this works with locked bl
Edit: may type
fastboot getvar all
and post your result, hide your imei if you got one

can't get into recovery mode

hi
i just unlocked my mi5s now, but when im trying to get into recovery mode (volume up + power) it still shows me the phone picture.
there is something that i am missing?
Flash the recovery, when in fastboot reboot into recovery by "fastboot boot recovery.img" if that's the name of the file on your computer. It will boot into recovery. After that, turn of the phone and boot into recovery with the button combination. Do not boot into the OS as it will disrupt the process! After this you should be fine. If not, try again, as you probably failed to directly boot into recovery with the button action.
Also, do check that you push both the volume keys plus the on/off button. So three in total.

as far as i know, when im unlock the phone, it unlock the recovery mode so i can access it by volume up + power instead of the phone picture.
i want for now stay with the stock recovery and not flash a custom one
Mm, you could use the phrase "fastboot reboot recovery". If that doesn't work, flash the latest Global beta and try again both ways.
If that also doesn't work, recheck if the phone is really unlocked (sometimes Xiaomi phones relock after an update without any good reason).
You could also try to find the stock recovery and use it in the method in my first reply. But keep that for last, as I don't know for sure how that recovery reacts to such a thing. Although I can't think of a reason why it would go wrong, it's better to be save than sorry.

Hi,
How long have you been holding the power button? You know this phone takes a long time to reboot pressing power button if it is stuck...
Tried holding power + volume down long enough? At least 20 seconds?
Good luck...

Hey,
Try getting in device manager (assuming you use windows) and see if the device is detected when you plug/unplug an USB cable?
Sorry, nothing else I can really think of at the moment.
Good luck...

Just wondering where you found this command to run
fastboot --set-active=other
Not sure if that caused your issue, but when you get back to bootloader or fastbootd, dont run that command. Get the boot img file ready from the android factory image zip, and when you do get to the bootloader menu, flash:
fastboot flash boot --slot all boot.img
As for your issue, try this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/guide-fixing-hard-bricks-t3403868/amp/
If you can just get back to the bootloader menu, you will be fine. If you do see that no valid slot to boot, don't reboot, get the boot img flashed first, or you'll run into the same issue.
Do you have a case on your phone? If so, remove it. Sometimes cases prevent the power button to be pressed down properly. Hold power and vol down for 30 seconds. If you still can't get to a bootloader, try the link above.

Hello,
The link you provided is for another device / chipset ( LG ?). If @willli flash his device with those files, he may brick it permanently. Be careful advising people to do things you are not sure about... :good:

Try this:
- Hold the Power button for 30-45 seconds
- if it turns on, turn it off (vibrates)
- Press the Power and Volume down buttons until you see Start.
- flash the stock boot.img to both slots
- fastboot flash boot --slot all boot.img
At one point when I first got my phone, blueline but pretty much the same, I had to hold the key combination for several minutes for it to start up. It was around 3-5 minutes, so I would just try holding it as long as you can.
