Mi 5s firmware installed on Mi 5s PLUS hardware - Xiaomi Mi 5s Questions & Answers

Dear Developers,
I have quite outstanding problem, I think the only at the forum. I have purchased "Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus" 6/128Gb phone, but I have received "Mi 5s Plus" hardware with "Mi 5s" firmware installed (and fake chineese version in addition (Global Stable 8.0.10.0.0 MAGCNDH). Model number is shown like "Mi 5s", memory volume and CPU speed is as expected, but the battery shows 3100mAh instead of 3800mAh, and the most disappointing thing is that the camera is not working at all (when starting says "Camera Error: can't connect to camera. Try restarting your device" (of course, it doesn't help...). The Seller does not respond (purchased in China via AliExpress).
I think all the above mentioned issues are coming because the firmware does not correspond to the hardware.
So, finally after reading the local forums I have understood that I have to reinstall the firmware to official Global Stable version (8.0.1.0) or to chineese stable (???). There are 2 ways: unlocking the bootloader (it is locked unfortunately) and install via fastboot with MiFlash utility or with locked bootloader using the EDL mode using the same MiFlash. But there are a lot of cases on local forum (but nearly 2 month ago) that after reflash in EDL mode the device become a brick (boot-loop).
So, my questions are the following. What are your sugestions in which way to proceed faster and more safe? Which firmware is more safe to try first in my case: global or chineese? Because on local forum it is written that to use EDL mode I need official english-chineese version to be preinstalled. What do you think about it? For me is not fully clear what will happen in EDL mode? Will bootloader also be overwritten or not? If everything is overwritten then why there are so many bricks/bootloops happened after using this mode with fake chineese firmware?
I have already requested permission to unlock bootloader, but there is no respond from xiaomi since 3 days already... hopefully because of New Year holidays (but in China?... strange...).
Also I have prepared an engineering cable to have possibility to enter EDL mode in case of bricking/bootloop. But I need your suggestion how to get rid of possible problems in my special case.
Many thanks in advance!

Heya,
The easiest way would be to download the global ROM from http://en.miui.com/download-315.html and flash it in the phone settings (about phone, firmrware upgrade, menu, choose ROM). I had the exact same "fake" ROM and had no problems flashing the official one.
Cheers!
*Edit* also, if you use the the MIUI-suite program and download the "fastboot image", bootloader, recovery, system and sdcard will be wiped (just tried)... flashing from the phone settings chould wipe aswell but never checked.

I have already tried to flash via about the phone with downloaded ROMs (recovery image), it says "cannot verify the package" and does not proceed... Looks like because bootloader is locked.
Mi PC Suite program cannot connect to phone at all. Tried different version, also chineese one.
And I tried different ROMs (stable global, stable chineese) - no result...

You are able to flash an official ROM with locked bootloader so it seems your phone actually thinks it's a Mi 5s, wich complicates things. Could you try downloading a Mi 5s official ROM and see if it still complains about verification?
The chineese version of Mi PC suit should work with Mi 5s plus but you have to put phone in fastbootmode for it to connect, volume down + power when whone is off.
If your phone has the wrong bootloader you might have to wait for BL unlock to force flash your the Mi 5s plus ROM.... or just flash twrp and flash whatever ROM you want

Good idea about "Mi 5s" global stable, thanks, will be interesting to try (a little bit later).
And I didn't know that Mi PC Suite should be connected in fastboot - another thank you!
By the moment I've got the unlocking approval, so I'm going to proceed in a way with unlocking of bootloader as more safe way by my opinion.
Many thanks for your help!

Mi5s Plus bootloader unlock problem

Wondering if anyone is able to help me.
Recently purchased a MI5S Plus and having problems unlocking the bootloader. Followed all instructions and the unlock fails at 50% with the tool stating that "the account on the device is different than current account" (or something like that).
Now here's what I have done so far:
-made sure device and tool are using the same account with phone number login
-made sure "find device" is turned on and phone can be found
-disabled windows 10 driver signature
-enabled usb debugging on the device
-made sure sim card is in slot 1 of device
So far no dice. Phone is on Global Stable (8.0.1.0) but I wanted to move to EU version (which also has the correct UK locale and some other features). I am not new to the rom flashing scene (just moved from iOS to android and had a Galaxy S2 back in the day).
If anyone could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. No idea what else to try.
Best regards

I'll check it out. If it helps I'm willing to try it. What location did you use?
I didn't change anything just use it by default...

I think what this means is that your phone is associated to a mi account different than the one you have logged in to unlock it. Make sure your phone has the same mi account as the one you are using to unlock it.
Good luck!!

Hi, I will share some of my experience.
Myself had that problem too, bought mi5s plus on global 8.x.x and wanted to move to eu version . The problem with this phone is that there's no global dev rom for it just yet, and you can't officially flash the china dev rom, since the installer doesn't recognize the package. So you find yourself in kind of loop, like
==> to open bootloader you need dev rom (only china available) :/
==> to flash china dev rom via mi flash you need to get your phone to EDM ( Emergency Download Mode ) .
But to get to EDM you need open bootloader.
That's kinda sucks, but i kept looking over the internet and found the overall solution that will probably work on any xiaomi device. And that's to make "Deep flash cable". This cable let's you enter EDM ignoring the locked bootloader, this way you can flash the china dev rom, and from there open the bootloader.
The idea is really simple, just need to shortcut any of the middle connectors of the usb with the ground(the outter connector) when plugging the phone into the pc(don't even need to cut the original usb cable), that will prevent the phone from starting to charge and it will enter EDM (pure black screen without any sign of life, but pc will recognize it on COM port as long as you have qualcomm drivers installed.) In this mode the mi flash tool will recognize the phone and you can flash the china dev rom.
If you need more help just ask, and u can find some nice guides on youtube that explain how to make the cable. Good luck!

Thanks makslll, I have mi5s, wondering if the process is different?
I bought my phone with the xiaomi.eu rom (8.0.10.0 MAGCNDH), unlocked bootloader with "MiFlashUnlock_1.1.0317.1_en" and installed recovery following this (https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/6-12-1.36462/). After this I was able to install other ROMs .
Hope this helps

Main problem I'm getting at the moment is the fact I can't get past the 50% on the unlock process. Keeps giving me an account error on the Mi Flash unlock tool. Something like "Account on the device is different from current account".
In any case I was looking at this EDL solution but let me see if I grasped this:
-I can use EDL to bypass locked bootloader restrictions. Could I just flash the EU rom without unlocking the bootloader?
-That not being the case, I'm guessing I would need to flash something like China Dev and the try and unlock the bootloader followed by TWRP flash, etc etc.
If someone could shed any light on this that would be great.
Thanks in advance

Thanks will give this a bash later on after first trying to factory reset the phone.
Thing is I read about a lot of people being successful unlocking their bootloader on Global Stable rom, so no idea why I can't do it. Pretty sure I have all the necessary drivers and I'm following the process as it should. Still getting the account error.
Xiaomi should sort their **** out...
Thanks everyone for your help!

You can't flash Eu ROM with locked bootloader, since you need to use special image files of the supported roms for miflash (Can't use the .zip roms that we flash via recovery), and those available only for the official roms ( global stable, china stable, china dev).
So yeah, unfortunally this would take little longer, but i can assure you this method 100% works and it's not very hard once you've done the tricky thing with the deep flash cable =)

On another note, if a Global Dev rom is released for the Mi5S Plus, are you able to flash it as normal through the updater app?
Best regards

Yes, on my gf's mi5 i just flashed global dev rom from the updater and unlocked it easy, they really should just remove the global <==> china barrier
Update: there is official Global Dev ROM available now, so no "deep flash cable" is needed anymore, just download the ROM, copy it to phone memory, and flash it via updater, good luck =)
So, quick update.
Managed to unlock bootloader last night by updating to the new Global Dev for the Mi5S Plus.
However a new problem has arisen, as usual. Using ADB, it recognises the phone whilst in normal mode with USB debugging on. The moment I reboot it into fastboot mode (to flash TWRP), it doesn't recognise it anymore. The drivers are installed as I disabled windows driver signature verification, but the phone is just not recognised anymore.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Thanks in advance.

[Question] Partial bricked - Doesn't recognize SIM card, and IMEI

Hi,
I bought Xiaomi Mi 5s with Global Stable ROM 8.2.1.0, and today I entered the official MIUI website to see what's the latest version that is released, in here:
http://en.miui.com/download-314.html
For some reason at the same moment I thought that 8.0.3.0 is higher version than mine (I missed a zero), and I downloaded the ROM installation file to the phone, and installed it through the updater app.
After the install, the phone loaded and didn't recognize the SIM card anymore, also couldn't enter the Network settings, the phone app or the phone status, and from what I read on the internet it probably don't recognize my IMEI anymore...
It also doesn't let me install my previous version (8.2.1.0) because the updater says it's not verified.
I tried to flash again the same ROM that is installed now (8.0.3.0), but it didn't help.
Also tried to do factory reset but I can't because it doesn't recognize the device id...
Is there something I can do immediately to fix this without applying a request to Xiaomi to unlock the bootloader (which I really don't want to do), and also to be stuck without a phone again for a couple of days?
Updater says it's not verified when you install 8.2.1.0? Maybe you got a wrong phone version?

Nope, it's the right one: http://en.miui.com/thread-567657-1-1.html
From what I read over the internet they canceled this update because it has issues, battery drain mostly, but nothing official that I saw.
I'm not sure, but according to a tutorial I found, which is about down grade from miui 8 to 7. You need to have a factory reset to have imei back
By the way, Mi 5s always comes with Chinese ROM, so maybe you have recovery installed already, where u can flash without verify.

No I don't have recovery, probably when it arrives to the stores here they flash official ROM and remove custom recovery (just guessing).
I see I can't avoid unlocking the device, although I don't want to. In my case I down graded from 8.2.1.0 to 8.0.3.0, but I hope that a factory reset will also help after I'll unlock the device.

I had exactly the same problem as you last month. All i can do is flashing my phone using deep flash cable. Factory reset does solve this problem, but in my case i cant. When hit reset on settings, i must input mi account password and it did nothing after that. I also cant unlock my phone because i forgot binding my device to mi account in developer settings when still in miui 8.2.1.0.

Sorry, I didn't know they are selling Mi 5s global versions. I thought Mi 5s was only sold in China. I did google it online and it was not sold elsewhere and there was no global rom then.
Update for people who will encounter this issue and will read this:
What solved it in my case, was to send Xiaomi a request to unlock the device, they returned an answer pretty fast (2 hours later), maybe because I wrote them what happened in the request. I unlocked the device using Mi Unlock tool, downloaded a fastboot version of the global ROM I wanted (8.0.3.0) from the official MIUI website, and flashed it using Mi Flash tool, choosing the option "clean all, flash and unlock". After the flashing succeeded, the IMEI was restored and everything is ok, and also the bootloader is locked again like nothing happened.
pretty much what "mezutelni" said to do

Stuck at Recovery 'This MIUI version can't be installed on this device' - My Options?

Hi All,
I did a silly thing, basically, bought a new phone which was supposed to be a Global model - we'll get to that in a minute...
Right from setting it up, I just felt that it wasn't right given that the Bootloader was already unlocked, so I decided to download the latest global fastboot rom and flash it via MiFlash (I've done this before plenty of times on RN3s and my Mi6...)
As this phone is for my mother in law, I thought it would be best to lock the bootloader back up, making it as 'stock as possible'.
Obviously, this is where things went wrong... Since reading around the web, I see now that it must actually be the chinese version of the phone and had the global rom flashed to it, but then you need to keep the bootloader unlocked?
Basically, I've tried all sorts, can't get anything other than ADB Sideload from recovery (Connect with MiAssistant) and fastboot obviously won't let me flash another rom now...
So my questions are :-
- Is EDL mode my only option? If so, is it a viable option considering all this stuff I'm reading about Anti-rollback and the fact that the current global rom that's flashed to the device is actually the very latest global stable so what Chinese rom do I go to from here?
- Is the absolute only way to get into EDL mode by disassembling the device and shorting the pins? (Redmi Note 3 used to have this power button/volume buttons sequence from power off state to get into EDL?)
- What's this EDL Auth stuff all about I'm seeing around the web and do I need to worry about it?
- Is there actually any fundamental differences in hardware with this being the Chinese model? Where I bought it from it was advertised as supporting Band 20 LTE for example, is this still the case?
In summary, am I right in thinking if I can actually get the China stable/dev rom flashed to it via EDL, I can then seek authority to unlock the bootloader, then flash the global rom again and leave the bootloader unlocked? Is this the right procedure?
** Also, just for info, this device hasn't been signed into yet with a Google account or a Mi Account so there's no Mi Account bound to it unfortunately
Thanks in advance!!!
From what i can understand about your situation,
You bought a phone which is chinese version but already on a global rom which is bootloader unlocked, and you just want to lock the bootloader.
My solution: Download the "RIGHT" fastboot global Rom version(OEIMIFA or NEIMIEK rom) for your phone via miflash and check "Clean all and Lock" to lock the bootloader.

Locked bootloader, stuck in recovery mode.

Hello guys.
I recently bought this phone and wanted to use netflix, but didn't allow me because it outdated and said it was not compatible with my phone. So I did a bit of research and found a post in "mi community" that said it was because phone had bootloader unlocked. The phone was new and I didn't change anything of it, but I found the bootloader was unlocked.
Installed fastboot and adb drivers, locked bootloader and got myself into a... Brick?
-I can still load into fastboot.
-If I turn on the phone, It tries to load android but loads Mi-Recovery 3.0 instead. Recovery also says "This MIUI version can't be installed on this device"
I'm so lost from this point, I need to know if there is a way to flash any rom, and which one do I need.
Thanks in advice
stuck on recovery
Most likely a chinese phone that came with global rom. If it came with global rom try flashing chinese rom and then unlocking bootloader and reflash global. Do not lock bootloader after flashing global.

I don't find the way to reboot (via software) to EDL from fastboot, is still possible to access it by opening the phone?

If you can flash global ROM. I think you just need to unlock bootloader and then flash China ROM once you have unlocked bootloader.
China ROM link below

It lets me flash de global one, but when I try to do the same with chinese rom, it says the version is lower, so I can't "downgrade".
It's weird because according to version number, the global one was a few versions lower
Solved the issue
The same issue , i was also encountered , After Flashing with "Xiaomi_Mi_Max_3_V10.2.1.0.PEDMIXM_20190226.0000.00_Global_9.0" Mi Max 3 with the MiFlash20191206 tool , by default the tool used "Clear data and Lock".
The tool saying "Flashing" and my phone got rebooted and went to MI Recovery 3.0 and also i got the message as
"This MIUI version can't be installed on this device".
I am not clueless how to proceed. So downloaded the Chinese version and again i tried to flash with above tool. Now tool said that "Can't Erase Locked" phone.
So Now i connected to Miflash_unlock with fastboot and connected to mi account and again i unlocked the phone.
Now my phone automatically booted to the Global version.
So i hope the issue is selecting the option as "Clear data and lock" . We need to select only "Clear data" in the flash tool.

Hi there,
I encountered the same issue. I tried to flash some CN Rom without enough research, without knowing that you can't just flash an Android 10 rom from 9 directly by recovery (even TWRP). So I ended up Fastboot or TWRP but never able to boot into system. Fortunately I didn't flash my Max3 by fastboot rushly, so my phone was still unlocked.
This is how I solved it:
1. Download an official CN ROM (the below I used is MIUI 11 with Android 9.9.x);
I can't post link here but search "miui通过线刷升级" - you shall see a miui.com link ending with shuaji-393.html. That's the page I download the Mi Max3 ROM from.
2. Use MiFlash to flash the official ROM with the flash option "clean all", NOT "clean All and lock";
3. The phone shall reboot into system, give it 5-10 minutes;
4. Flash the miui.eu ROM you like (DO make sure it is Android 9 tho) by recovery (tutorial given under every official xiaomi.eu ROM download).
Again it's easy to search
It took me less than an hour to do it (I don't have much experience with new XiaoMi phone). So don't worry about bricking your phone forever.
Hope it helps to destress
Hi guys. I need some help too because I'm not totally sure what I have to do here so if anyone can give me some tips I would appreciate it.
I just ordered the 128gb 6gb ram version of Mi Max 3 and it might come with the global rom and already unlocked. Should I use the Mi flash tool to install the file MIUI 11 V11.0.3.0.PEDCNXM android 9 fastboot file? then after that installs I should lock the bootloader and then unlock it again myself with my mi own account? I just want to make sure that this is the correct way to do it.
Also after it I unlock it should I flash the newest xiaomi.eu rom with android 10 or do i have to do something else first? Thank you

Question Possible to flash any ROM to bricked and locked Mi11 Lite through fastboot ??

Hi everybody,
I recently tried to downgrade from 12.5.5.0 to 12.0.2.0 recovery version.
It was not a good idea since phone does not start any more and has a black screen no matter what I do.
But it can access fastboot mode...
My question:
Its locked unfortunately and I cannot access it anymore since it does not boot.
Is it possible to flash ANY Rom to it?
I tried it with several ROMs but Miflash tool always blocks the procedure since phone is locked...
Is there a ROM for the Mi 11 Lite 4G that is accepted by the MiFlash tool in locked state?

The problem is not the ROM version to be accepted but your device itself, due to the locked status it refuses to accept any partition to be flashed.
This same principle doesn't matter in EDL mode, but XM11 (and most of, if not all, Xiaomi devices) require of an authorized account for Mi Flash tool.
If you at least did bind your Mi account and started the process to unlock bootloader, then you still can do this.
Did you fixed the problem? If yes, how?

@SubwayChamp already mentioned how one'd go about it:
- If the phone was bound to the owner's Mi account, starting a bootloader unlock process and if it is able to go forward, it could then be restored to a working state.
- Perhaps... sideloading a full recovery ROM if access to the stock recovery and Mi Assistant were an option, although just like with EDL, I'm guessing some sort of authorization takes place (it used to several years ago).
- Take the phone to a service center and plead one's case, they could be willing to flash the device with an official build, although if it were me I'd require proof of ownership at least.
- Resort to a 3rd party service / app that deals in auth. EDL flashes for money.
That's about it, these days there's not even a point in opening a device to access the test points.
