Canada N903W8 Note 7 - Cant custom recovery - Help Needed - Note 7 Questions & Answers

Hi Guys,
I've just spent the last 8 hours trying to get an Canadian Note 7 to custom recovery and ROM with NO luck !
I've done a couple of Note 7s of UK spec but this is the first Note 7 from Canada, and so far i've had no luck at getting it to accept anything.
The handset has received the cripple code that has disabled wifi, blutooth, 4G, tethering and reduced the battery capacity to 15%
I have tried several files and different methods of loading in a custom recovery so i can then load a custom ROM.
The favorite is to use ODIN and then either load CWM or TWRP.
When trying to load either CWM or TWRP i get an "Auth Fail" or "QTQ Close" error
I tried to use the Sprint method to get into the system and allow a custom ROM and all this did was brick the phone... Its currently stuck in no boot state which just takes me into the standard android recovery with errors of "dirty targets", "check DRK files" and "dm-Verity verification failed"
At the moment i cant find a way to get the handset to load a custom recovery and then a rom, stock or custom.
If anyone can help with fixing This-POS Canadian Telus Note 7 Handset i would greatly appreciate it before i stamp on it and send it back to samsung !
cheers guys

The Canadian variant has a locked bootloader, so no custom recovery and no root. There are workarounds to get the older firmware back that doesn't cripple the phone. There are threads on here for that if you search around.

Correct, no root yet unless its first gen N7 with first firmware but im sure non around anymore.
Best bet is to find a firmware and downgrade to 100% battery. Then block all the packages to prevent future updates from samsung. If you IMEI was blocked then that is a whole different ball game in which Samsung is winning so far in Canada

Thanks for the info guys
I spent 9 hours in the end attacking this thing from all angles and just managed to corrupt it so it doesn't even boot now.
The Canadian phone companies and samsung have done a dam good job at taking these phones down or rendering them totally useless.
Own31,
Do you have any recommendations on what i should use / try to rectify this

Hi, can you put it in download mode? Power +home+volume down

Can someone link me the sprint engineering guide for the snapdragon phones?
I accidentally tried to flash a exynos rom and bricked it before realising there were multiple variants durrr
Managed to find my stock rom for my rogers note 7 and used odin to flash it in download mode to reset it. Currently turns on and has the 100% battery but every time I turn on wifi it prompts for the 60% battery update and I don't know how to block the package.
Edit: Caved and bought package disabler pro and no longer get prompts

I don't suppose you've seen a rom for a Telus Note 7 have you?
the one i'm trying to flash reports as:

I'd have to refind it. There was a link I found for all the canadian roms but I only downloaded the one I needed of course.

Nop... I'm on API3.
I'm using package disabler right now to avoid the OTA updates. I had a notification today that the update was downloading so I just turned off wifi and disabled almost everything under the sun (besides core services) relating to samsung and it no longer seems to be connecting to the update server which is what I want in the end.

Well the saga continues...
I managed to trick it into letting me sideload from ADB.... only problem is i couldn't find any files in .zip format to side load and those that i could it wouldn't accept.
I did manage to get a partial sucsess with odin and got a CP file to install properly... sadly it rejected the BL, AP and CSC files and now its really screwed things up as it just boot loops now and the android recovery kinda doesn't work now.
So any ideas on how to defeat this POS, i refuse to let Samsung Canada and the phone companies beat me, but i think i am fighting a losing battle...
Only half decent firmware files i could find were N930W8VLU1APH1_N930W8OYA1APH1_ESK

Ok really screwed it now ! GERRRRRR
Managed to get it to take a new Bootloader ! all completed in ODIN and the phone rebooted, started to load then crashed and now wont turn on at all - TOTALLY BRICKED !
but the strange thing is, when you plug it in windows still sees it, you would expect nothing to happen like if the phone were switched off completely, but Windows 7 sees it as a device and set up drivers for ELINK HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM5)
very odd, and incredibly frustrating !

That file is useless unless that is what was on the device prior to it getting messed up.
So what was it on when you tried messing with it PI3?

I think that was the firmware which came with the device, the first original firmware which shipped with it from samsung before the APH1 OTA.

APH1 Note 7 Rogers with 15% update, no WiFi/Cellular
New user here. I've got an APH1 Note 7 first edition without the green battery icon on Rogers in Canada in the same situation - 15% battery, no WiFi, no cellular. I've tried a few package disablers but it seems all the free ones require WiFi to activate the product license (which I can't exactly do). It's failed every Odin flash attempt I've made, usually stopping at recovery.img or a couple of steps after that. I've tried flashing firmware from all US variants and multiple Canadian ones as well. Any ideas on how to recover the phone? It still boots (even though I semi-bricked it twice). I'm thinking that there might be some options through ADB - could anyone guide me on how to do that?

Your lucky man...original firmware means you can still root with the engineering firmware. That should kill any OTAs. Check out the development forum in the Tmo note 7 area.
In addition check out note7alliance.com they have a working disabler.
Is yours still working on the network? I had thought all note 7s here were blocked from cellular networks...mine is from rogers

Just like you, running on Rogers with no network connectivity.
Seems like the N7A package disabler requires WiFi to authenticate, so I can't use that method sadly.
Right now I'm trying to use a spare rooted phone to put a package disabler app onto my SD, to see if I can then run the app in the Note 7. It's one of the few options I have left, but I'll still try it, as I can't flash firmware without blocking updates.

I've got the Rogers APH3 firmware lying around, so I should be good on that front.
I'll see how far I can get with the N7A method. Thanks for the advice.

i have a rogers note 7 still. thought about trying to make it work but seeing everyones struggles, doesnt seem worth it. anyone have luck selling these things?

The market for Note 7s is mixed. Some units requiring more software work sell for as little as $200 (that's what I paid); decently working units (e.g. 60% limited units) fetch ~$600; and perfect condition units without any disabling updates can still for $1000. Some brand new in box units can still sell for $2000.
That said, is selling even legal? What are the implications around that?

SGH-I467 - Bricked after attempt to restore in Kies

I have a Galaxy Note 8.0 LTE Tablet from AT&T. This device had been updated via OTA to version 4.4.2.
A relative of mine had been borrowing this tablet on a vacation to FL, and when I got it back, they had loaded it with a ton of stuff.
As I've done in the past, instead of going through the tablet, and getting rid of everything, I plugged it into my PC, and fired up Kies.
Like I said, I've done this before... I selected "Upgrade and Initialization". I typed in the Model: SGH-I467, and the Serial Number.
Like before it said it was going to revert the tablet back to 4.1.2. I hit upgrade, and the process started.
It got to 100% completed, and then errored out. The tablet said "Invalid Magic Number", and Kies was telling me I needed to do an "Emergency Recovery". However it did not have a Recovery Code, nor did it list my tablet in the box.
I rebooted the tablet, and tried again with the same error results.
Of course I cannot find a stock firmware file for 4.4.2, nor can I flash 4.1.2 with Odin because the tablet has Knox installed.
I'm at a complete lose at what happened, or what to do. I've read that some people were able to have a tech at Best Buy re-flash the tablet, but the nearest Best Buy store to me is 4 hours away.
Can anyone give me any advice or point me in the right direction?
I downloaded the Open Source KitKat file from the Samsung Site, but I've never compiled from source before, and have no idea where to start.
Has anyone else compiled the OpenSource KitKat files from the Samsung Site for the SGH-I467? If so I would be very very happy if someone could share that with me.

I was able to get Samsung to repair my i467 which was bricked in the same fashion. It took 3 times shipping it to their repair center and back before I finally got an upper level manager to override the "Warranty Void" status and do a flash to fix it. Pain in the butt but worth it. They do a lot of insisting it was your fault, and they won't fix, etc. etc. - In my case it was actually a failed OTA that caused the brick.

@K1979C20 figured out that kingroot 4.1 works to root 4.4.2 on the sgh-i467. After rooting, I used an app called "supersu me" to remove kingroot and install supersu. Now I'm rooted and have supers installed!
Now we need to figure out a few things... like how to pull the factory 4.4.2 image and create a flashable or odin image for getting out of a jam in the future... then maybe how to port/flash a rom...
I have signed up to beta test for the flash fire app from @Chainfire, so even though we don't have a Normal recovery like twrp/cwm... we still have the possibility to flash a rom using flashfire.

Latest G930U firmware (PL2) on G930V is a success.

I decided to try the latest U-firmware on my G930V. I had issues with previous G930U builds having SMS/MMS issues. I gave PL2 a shot yesterday and I've been really happy with it. The phone is very snappy and everything works as designed. Verizon visual voicemail can't be used, but it's not a huge deal. VoLTE works well. You can download My Verizon from the Play Store. I'd highly recommend this firmware compared to the previous builds. Make sure to enable the Verizon APN in APN settings after install.
I'd like to note that my phone is completely stock at this point, NOT ROOTED, so I didn't need to apply any fixes to make things work. You should be able to root without issue if that's your thing.
Downloading the firmware from Sammobile takes FOREVER, so I uploaded it to my AFH account to cut down on that download time for you guys.
G930UUEU4APL2
Backup using Smart Switch, then use Odin and flash ALL 4 files. Do yourself a favor and don't use HOME_CSC. It'll make things much smoother if you don't.
Let me know if anyone runs into any issues. I know in the past, some have had great experience with the U-firmware and others had issues with no reception. I want to see if the same holds true for this build.
Is this update in January?
Update: Yup, I took it last month and everything was OK. I am on Verizon Rom now just expecting it receives Nougat earlier than U furmware, which updates quarterly.

I was hoping Verizon would see the official Nougat by this point. I liked the feel of the U-firmware, but reception was a problem for me on Verizon. I decided I'd give the latest U-firm a shot since waiting for official Verizon Nougat seems like a lost cause at this point. I'll stay with this until Nougat is officially released. This firmware is the December update, and since they update it quarterly, an update should be around the corner. Maybe the next U-firmware will be Nougat. I think Nougat-U would be damn near flawless lol.
I've been running it since beginning of January no Issues
What exactly are the benefits of flashing this? Do I get 7.0? How is the reception? What are the cons?
I have a pretty big problem. I attempted flashing the 4 files with Odin 3.09. After a couple of seconds the operation terminated and now my GS7 is stuck in a bootloop. Whats worse is that when i attempted to boot into recovery, now it shows a blue screen with the android logo that says "installing system update" for about 2 seconds then shuts off, then tries again. Does anyone know how to fix this, at least so I can flash stock back on it?
Update: Fixed it, was able to get into download mode and use odin to flash stock. The flash failed but it was able to trip the OS and recovery back to normal for some reason.

No carrier bloat and a very smooth OS. The reception is great. The cons are that you don't get any of the carrier features, like WiFi calling, visual voicemail, ect.

Odin 3.9 might be too old. I've used Odin 3.11 or higher on the S7 and have never had any issues.
thanks to you it works perfectly but HOME_CSC failed and caused recovery bootloop after that i tried other CSC and it was successful. I've got very upset on V firmware because they deleted a lot of features on galaxy S7. they are worst

I'm still having issues with this latest firmwire. I do get LTE but not network connection. I still have circle with a line through it indicating that I don't have service. the service will come on for a second and then cut out. Service is called "123456".
Did you choose the APN to use? If you are using a Verizon SIM card, then it should give you the option to use Verizon, but you need to select it.

So there's APN settings and Network Operators. I'm actually using a verizon MVNO called boom mobile. If I selected "verizon" network, I get a notification that says " no service - selected netweork verizon not available". The other one's that show up from the selection are ATT, T mobile, and some 310830 thing. None of them work. I use automatic network detection.
As far as APN settings, I do use Verizon and I get LTE data from that. I just don't get the phone service connection.

Yes you can.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I was looking into flashing the U firmware for a while and I finally pulled a trigger after seeing this thread.
Everything works well on Verizon and it feels great to have a clean phone & freedom to switch. I think it's worth waiting a little more for Nougat.
p.s. Anyone has an idea on when official G930U Nougat will be released?
Will this work for my AT&T S7 on PJ4 firmware?
jOdin3
hey guys,
this is the first non-nexus phone i've used, and I am excited about flashing the U firmware to get a clean stock experience on my g930v. I was wondering what files i should input in jOdin under the PDA/Bootloader/CSC/Phone fields after I extract the zip file SM-G930U? I have searched tried to watch some insufferable youtube videos on the matter have had no luck finding an answer. Also since I'm asking, is it possible to flash this firmware with jOdin3, sorry for the newbie questions, didn't know where else to go.
Thanks in advance to any helpful replies.
Solved the above, no need for replies.
Next though is when I try and flash using Jodin3 the pit file is acquired, the phone reboots and then it stays disconnected and I am unable to start the process after the phone reboots. Any suggestions?
Solved the above by using heimdall to extact pit.
I am close to giving up and flashing anything via jOdin3 I have tried pretty much everything to flash new firmware with no success, latest error is that there is a corrupt file, need to use Odin file...
HAS ANYONE had success flashing a Verizon S7 on macOS? if so please tell me where to go.

Flash the Verizon firmware from the Verizon threads

Odin flash gets: Device:2 Binary:1

Hi Guys,
When trying to downgrade/flash below firmware via Odin I'm getting error:
SW REV. CHECK FAIL(BOOTLOADER) DEVICE: 2, BINARY: 1
Or if BL disabled following some recommendations:
KERNEL REV. CHECK FAIL. DEVICE:2, BINARY:1
Current version: (got via OTA)
G960FXXU2BRG6
Service provider OXM_XEF_00_0025 ... XEF/XEF, XEO/DBT - but this has probably nothing to do with that.
Returning to:
DBT-G960FXXU1BRE5
History of the phone is that I've received it on Saturday (manufactured on May 21), dual SIM + SD Card was working, got notification about OTA, and did proceed (silly me), got message that "no downgrade" will be possible - thought that it is for normal user, not the one with Odin magic, though have a feeling it has something to do with that. It was unusual message though thought it is something new on S(, but not really blocking me to downgrade with Odin.
Is there any way to downgrade? I really need to do that as thanks to Samsung I cannot use dual SIM + SD Card, described here:

When trying to downgrade/flash below firmware via Odin I'm getting error:
SW REV. CHECK FAIL(BOOTLOADER) DEVICE: 2, BINARY: 1
same problem, my S9 Plus is AFG cant intall only can update with DBT file but his current AFG no
Make sure you're using ODIN 3.13.x
You cannot downgrade the bootloader you can only flash firmware with an equal or higher BL version
G960FXXU2BRG6 <<< BL version 2
Check in Download mode what version yours says

Many thanks, that makes sense. I do remember message prior OTA apply "you won't be able to downgrade" but thought it was meaning that normal user won't be able to downgrade unless Odin would be used. Tough luck.
The worst part is that this is the first "U2" version for S9, so there's no path for me.
One more question - when "BL" was deselected and I've left only AP, CP, CSC - it resulted in message:
KERNEL REV. CHECK FAIL. DEVICE:2, BINARY:1
It is still in effort to downgrade the rest outside of BL, but does it seem I'm stuck on this firmware as the lowest on my phone now?
On technical side, these are all partitions on internal SDcard/memory. Why would it not be possible to overwrite it? Is it re-partitioning thing or something else? I'm trying to understand from where the limitation comes.
p.s. did some reading on bootloader process of Samsung and whilst it is clever and nice for Common Criteria, it should be possible to unlock it as in the past (Superboot tool). The good bootloader lecture is here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1742287618300409 (S7 based).
Have you tried the patched Odin 13.3.1

What are risks using that Odin version and pushing AP?
Should I try to push BL too?
Apologies if I'm overly cautious it is that I don't want to brick the phone.
Honestly, I'm a take your balls in your hand kind of guy.
I'm a computer technician and if I spent all my time wringing my hands being cautious I'd never get anything done.
It's pretty hard to HARD BRICK these phones as long as you don't go faffing around with the partitions option in Odin.
God I've brought mine to the brink of death and back again.
Just out of curiosity, do you have a way of taking a photo of your Odin/Download mode screen... I'll try to post mine.
I'm rooted and running a customised stock based rom on BRE5

Well... sometimes it is better to be safe than sorry... (at least this is my take), like with that unfortunate upgrade.
If you're that brave, why don't you upgrade to the latest one and then try to downgrade?
Attached is Download mode screenshot.

Interestingly, your model shows 6GB, mine 4GB, but it doesn't matter...
Thanks... I'll debating if to give it a shot with that custom Odin version. Did you try it? Should BL be included?
I said brave, not freaking insane... Mine is rooted and working perfectly
I honestly DON'T want to go through the 17 days of possibly having to wait for the RMM STATE again haha

Mines an S9+, they have 6 gig compared to the S9 which only has 4 gig.
I didn't try it, no.. I just know the modded version exists.
I'm having the same problem
Hi guys I'm having the same problem with kernel rev check fail.
I had a brand firmware and tried to make it no-brand, but something went wrong.
Now when trying to flash a no-brand firmware, Odin stops during system.img
What can I do? Do I have to reinstall the same branded old firmware that I had?
Thanks!

Just a thought - your non-brand might be of an older release than branded software. In worst case you're stuck on working branded soft?
i tried, i doesn't work either with/without BL

i tried, i doesn't work either with/without BL selected. so i guess the modified odin did not fit for the new firmware.
I Tried
Me too being the grab your balls by the hand person that likes to boldly go where no man has gone before, attempted the patch version of Odin on my s9 in an attempt to put the TMO firmware on to get RCS chat. Using BL AP CL and CSC all did not work. I got the same stupid message regarding the downgrade. I then tried AP and CSC alone. Same issue. Finally, I tried just CSC. It gave a similar error but it was difference in the sense that it says [cache]fused 2 > Binary 1.
It's super annoying that you can't move from u1 to u (unlocked to carrier) without having to do all this crap.
Hey all, dunno if you resolved the kernel error but I was getting the same thing on my S8 (SM-G950F) and ended up checking if anyone at the Samsung store could fix it (they could). Have a look at this post I wrote up, hopefully it's somewhat useful.

Same problem I got. No matter if I use modded or normal ODIN... Even if I do not flash Boot, I got the message Kernel Rev. check fail...
To me, this is almost criminal from Samsung... I pay 800 Euro for the phone and I like to run a different system. I think there is no law against using a Computer (which in fact it is) with an Operating system of my choice.
To me, a restriction of "liberty".

ODIN is a Samsung INTERNAL tool, you're not even meant to be using it
And you do have the freedom to run whatever OS you want, you have that choice the day you choose to buy a new phone, otherwise read the smallprint, pretty sure you agreed to Samsungs terms when you bought the phone
I don't get why people buy Samsung phones knowing how locked down they can be, knowing they don't run vanilla Android, knowing about KNOX, and then complain when they can't do anything with them.... if I wanted to mod my phone without any problems I wouldn't be buying Samsung
Anyway, honestly I accidentally updated my spare S9 to U2 forgetting it can't be rolled back and I had a little bit of trouble finding a firmware that ran fine with gravity box, but now I'm running a custom BRI3 rooted with magisk running gravity box where 99% of features work including lock screen security.
So unless the U2 bootloader is effecting you in some way... Does it matter if you can't roll back.
Well, the hardware of Samsung I actually do like.. But the software policy I do not.
For sure, never again I will buy Samsung

ATT samsung tab s pie firmware

I bought a used ATT branded Tab s4. It is unlocked and I really love the tablet but im unable to get any system updates like pie or security updates. Having the same issue here. I've tried:
- Hard reset
- Using my AT&T sim chip to get it on the 4g network, turning off wifi
- Using Samsung Smart Switch
None of the above would yield any updates past 8.1. It just keeps saying I have the latest of everything. Gah!

I was in the same situation for over a year and a half and finally i managed to update by flashing it.
On an unlocked ATT TAB S4 i flashed , T Mobile ROM and Verizon ROM (Both PIE).
Download the Roms from SAMfirmare and flash with ODIN, you do not require to ROOT it since all these models are SM-T837A (ATT), T837V (Verizon), T837T (TMO).
I think T Mobile ROM is the best as it has Call & Text on other device option and Feb 20 Security update Patch.
Hope this helps!

Actually I managed to solve it a different way:
1. Put in active AT&T SIM chip.
2. Do a hard reset & wipe.
3. Don't put it on wifi during initial setup (unsure if this helped or not, but I erred on the side of caution).
4. Complete basic initial setup.
5. Check for software updates while on the AT&T network.
6. Many updates came through in succession.... first the update to Pie, then a half dozen smaller security updates.
7. Put the phone back on wifi and pulled my SIM chip out.
8. Enjoy.

+1 for me. Ive spent almost 2 years and 3 phones trying to get an answer to this. My note 8 had this problem, then my note 10+, then the replacement note 10+. At&t blames Samsung, then Samsung blames at&t, over and over and over. I even had a Samsung technician sit in on a 3 way call with an at&t technician for the better part of an hour. The last I heard was that at&t was petitioning samsung to fix something on their end because at&t shows that everything is up to date on my phone but its not. Im looking into Odin too because this is getting stupid.
At&t is horrible with OTA's. They work for some but for a lot of people it does not, and I am one of them. At&t has never been able to give me an answer as to why this happened on my Note 8..9..and 10+.
Odin is very easy. You dont have to use At&t firmware you can use any Snapdragon US firmware they are the same. Once its installed, it will provision to you sim. There are many threads that have the firmware needed or just us Frija to download the firmware. Once downloaded you need to extract the files. You will have BL..AP..CP..CSC...HOME_csc. You need to download the correct version of Odin to flash the firmware. Open Odin put device in download mode connect device. Once odin recognizes devices find where you extracted the firmware. In odin put BL in BL spot..AP in AP spot..CP in Cp spot. If you want to save data, put HOME_csc in CSC spot. If you want clean install put CSC in CSC spot as it will wipe device. Once you have everything where it should be click start and Odin will flash the firmware. Once complete Odin will say PASS at top left..boot time should take a few minutes. But remember if the firmware you flash has a higher bootloader you cant downgrade back to previous version.

So I can use a verizon csc and it will work on a att branded phone? Or is a generic one better?
Edit
Basically which one do you pick. I'm leaning towards a tmobile because it sounds like the included bloatware is smaller.
I have At&t device purchased at At&t. I have used USC..Tmobile..Verizon. The device will provision to your sim. If you dont want bloat just flash U1 firmware. But I think you will lose advanced features like wifi calling if you do. I cant remember if flashing a (U) csc with U1 firmware brings back advanced features. But prob just stick with 1 firmware until you have a understanding on how to do this...Good luck.

I actually went ahead and did this last night with the tmobile firmware and it was just as easy as you said. For whatever reason I didn't even get any bloatware. It booted up with the at&t logo and sound, and my software version says att/att/att. I put my sim card back in and there were no special notifications or anything, everything just worked. I wonder if Frija gave me the att firmware despite me putting in tmb? Either way, everything is up to day now. Thanks for the help!
Anytime my friend glad it all worked out[emoji106]

Hi I have the same problem. I flashed android 10 One UI 2.0 on my Exynos Note10+ SM-N975F last December via Odin and download the firmware from Samfrew(like Sammobile).(the firmware is the German version and I bought my phone from Egypt) Since then I didn't receive any security patch updates I only have the December 2019 one. Will it be safe if I download the latest firmware from Sammobile and flash it; the file in over 5GB , can this overwrite? I never tried to flash the same software two times. Is it safe?
As long as you are using the firmware that is for your device and your region you should be fine. Although this is Snapdragon thread I would think International flashing is same. You may want to double check in your device specific thread as I don't want to be the blame if there is something different with F version.

Also try turning off auto update date and time. Set date like 5days ahead. Then check for update. Sometimes this little trick works for OTA
