SM-N920A 6.0.1 Rooting - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note5

Can someone please help me with this. I bought 2 of these phones at the same time in august, one was already rooted from the factory! No problem I'm using lucky patcher and all. The other will not root not matter what I do! I cant find any solid info on this.

How do you have a rooted AT&T Note 5 when no one else does yet?

Bought it that way from AT&T... Is there a way to clone one phone to the other so they are both rooted? Maybe I can copy my phone to a zip and upload it?

Can you screen shot your kernel information in settings and then about phone so I can see what it says for the rooted kernel. And copying the entire system to use it on the other phone is possible. Just depends on certain things.

I guess I should of bought a rooted one myself...........

think that no one has the root yet on this phone, so, pay attention to the instructions that forum masters will give to you. You could be a HERO for the entire Sm-n920a community and users hahahah. Btw, i don't know your knowledge about this things but yes, is possible to do this. Obvious, when someone of the biggest users will teach you how to do what you need, you could share the system clone with us!

Not to mention there's a big donation for anyone that finds a root method. So if you really have a rooted at&t note 5 there could be money coming your way.

Where's this donation? We are close, also luckypatcher works WITHOUT root. Technically we already have root, it just sucks really bad.

I could of sworn I seen a bounty for the n920a like a year ago, but now I'm not finding anything. I should look before I comment apparently. However, much respect TechNyne66. I've been following you working a root method for a while now, and great job on being close.

@TechNyne66 It looks like he been out of the game for awhile, but try to contact Dan Rosenberg aka djrbliss. If anyone can help, he can.

Do you have a username? I got another member to join in again who says he knows how to complie kernels with ease. So lets hope this gets going! Everything is layed out we just need to get the code written. Remember anything is possible when you put you're mind to it, but this is with code. Kexec has worked in the past for locked bootloaders so I don't see why my notes in theory but plausible.

I shall look into it.

Can we get a system dump of your partitions? We just need your kernel zImage and I can put it together.
I'd really like to see a dump of the system partition.

Follow a guide a make a full system dump of your rooted phone and then make a nandroid backup.
Upload it to us and we can make a clone. Please!
If you have a real full root. We need your system dump to unlock at&t and Verizon both.

Chill bro I'm working on getting it from him. I've seen accident eng phones released by Samsung before so maybe it happened again.

There's no root for AT&T Note 5 SM-N920A if you are running Marshmallow with the Nov security update! If you are on this version you are screwedededed!!!! I tried every type of way to install firmwares PH4 ==> PH2 and I tried every version of firmware I could find on this planet. I have tried OGG. I have tried crashing my installation, then trying to downgrade.
Long story short; If you have an unlocked SM-N920A running Android 6.01 with Nov Security Patch I will definitely be donating to you if you upload. If you aren't a member of this forum I promise you that you are safe. The guys here will help you make a copy of the firmware which will not include your personal information. (Look for the guys with lots of Thanks, listen to them)
So if you are coming in from Google and you are wondering if you can root or downgrade now you know that you can't. I'm a beginner Android Developer who follows directions like a champion, save your time trying to downgrade it is fully blocked by the bootloader.

unlocked SM-920A upload coming soon

I agree. Without the detailed directions in the original post in the VZ S4 forum, important directions to make this work is lost.
For example, I'm going to be posting directions this weekend that will allow this to work on a number of devices without using adb.
I'm trying to make this better, run on more devices, make it faster, etc... I can't be managing snapshots all over the forums.
Yeah, I know, it's exiting to have root. Let's not complicate it unnecessarily.

AT&T Note 4 Community Root Investigating

Note 4 owners over in the Verizon section are putting together a fair effort to investigate rooting themselves. We AT&T users should have a similar thread.
The Verizon thread, for reference:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/talk-root-t2908919
T-Mobile and Sprint have CF-Autoroot but not yet for AT&T and Verizon. So (I think) a new root should work for either, all the more reason to work together.
In the Verizon thread the general process was posted:
Surge1223 said:
I have no vested interest in this (other than seeing vzw get screwed over) but someone needs to get the ball rolling here:
1. Grab the Odin tar then boot.img to get kallsyms
2. Post partition info
3. Grab kernel source and confirm latest Linux kernel cves are patched/not patched
4. Find PoC for Linux exploits for 2014 Linux kernel cves and port them to android and test
If you have to ask what any of the above are/do Google is your friend.

Feel free to read through the other thread for info on CVEs and stuff.
The Verizon owners have to wait for kernel source but I guess our's is already posted (N910A):
http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=sub&sub=F&searchValue=Sm-n910
SHA1 and SHA256 for the kernel source zip that I downloaded, for reference:
99e00529ce613548664f3c986cd7df886b54caa0 SM-N910A_NA_KK_Opensource.zip
9a5dfcbcd1b77367507b9374afd4f1e1afd505255ff48b4d3779b235974650c0 SM-N910A_NA_KK_Opensource.zip
This might not be necessary as someone like Chainfire may already be working on a rooting method, but we might make it slightly easier.
Any contributions by more knowledgeable people are greatly appreciated.
Anyone want to post their kallsyms, boot, or full image of an AT&T phone?
I'll try to post myself if I can figure out of I'm supposed to use Odin or if the way the Verizon owners got their's was with some Verizon-only tool.
We have firmware here:

The kernel source is here:

You don't. The kallsyms are information about the internal kernel functions, useful for writing code which gets you root access.
Partition information sits in a .PIT file inside the factory image (if it's available), or you can dump it from a running phone.

Edit: Gah, still had kernel.Image extacted from the Verizon image, and didn't notice the message saying "kernel.Image: already exists; not overwritten". The attachment above has been updated. My apologies, and thanks for catching it.
This may be interesting though. The nexus devices have a check box in the developer settings to OEM unlock the phone. Basically you just check a box and it's boot loader is unlocked.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...-6-9-requires-checking-box-developer-options/
Maybe this can be used to find a loop hole on lollipop for this device. I think there could b be a small chance this device could get unlocked after the update. It might actually be easier.

While I appreciate the speculation, that's all this is, and at the moment we don't have Lollipop. I believe the OP specified good steps that should be looked into. I have downloaded the source code but am not exactly sure how to be looking for other then doing the steps as outlined: Finding the build date of the kernel then looking up know vulnerabilities in it. Obviously this is going to take a while and makes sense on where to look. Why focus on something we don't have when we could focus on what we do.
tl;dr We need to stay focused on the current task at hand. Also it'd be nice if this thread didn't get derailed with speculations.

If anyone were looking at exploiting, as a non-expert on the subject, with SELinux set to enforcing, you'd need either a kernel-space exploit (which can bypass SELinux), or take over a system service. On KitKat, being able to create the install-recovery.sh file in /system/etc and chmod it 0755 is usually enough (takes over the flash_recovery service). On Lollipop, you'd also have to manage that file being started as init. There's no 5.0 Samsung firmwares in the wild yet, but on stock Android just writing that file is no longer enough, because it doesn't run in the right SELinux context anymore - you need a modified kernel (ramdisk) as well (for which you need an unlocked bootloader). Looking at my international Note 4 (still on KitKat), there is only one service that runs as init, but it doesn't run as root (it runs as system), so you'd have to both exploit that service and find a way to elevate yourself from system to root user. And I'm pretty sure that service will no longer run as init on 5.0...
A normal exploit is thus unlikely to even work. You may have more luck with a kernel exploit that can bypass SELinux, but these are rare, and generally make the system unstable. Most exploit-based roots use a kernel exploit to modify system, then reboot so you can have root on a stable system. But just modifying system (as illustrated above) is no longer enough to gain root (barring a major Samsung messup) on 5.0, so this will also not work properly. Even with a major Samsung messup, modifying system is not even going to work once dm-verity becomes enabled (which it will, at some point).
For a proper root on 5.0, it may be the case that both a kernel exploit and a bootloader exploit is needed, rare and high-value exploits both.
I may certainly be corrected by real exploiters, and we're running ahead of a 5.0 firmware, but still. Though I'm not saying it's impossible, a working root on 5.0 seems unlikely. 4.4 less unlikely, but I still wouldn't bet money on seeing one.

Interested in contributing towards the development of root, root with Samsung Knox bypass, or bootloader unlocking of the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4?
How to pledge: leave a comment below stating how much you would like to pledge, and what you would like your pledge to go towards.
Example: soraxd pledging $50 towards root. $0 towards Knox. $75 towards an unlocked bootloader. (This means if all 3 are claimed, I would give $125)
Your financial pledge will only be claimed if an applicable method is shared. All pledges will be assumed USD, unless otherwise stated in pledge. If at any time you wish to amend or retract your pledge, a new reply must be created doing so. XDA will never ask to hold your pledge in escrow. If at any time an acceptable method is shared related to your pledge, you will be notified through XDA forums.

Well, to be fair, you blatantly went against the obvious rules and start actually trying to collect money... tsk tsk tsk!
I wish I had the time to really sit down and figure out and understand how to find exploits and manage to obtain root on devices like Chainfire does. His work really amazes me. Even though its not good news per-say, it still impresses me that he can figure all that out. One smart cookie. I would have no idea where to start. What programs to use, what I should be looking for, plus everything else I am completely unaware of lol. Hope someone out there is able to root this phone sometime. Im not moving off 4.4 unless AT&T makes me or a root exploit comes out once 5.0 hits. For anyone working on root access, I wish you the best of luck. Ill donate once a root is found, if its found. For now Im just gonna keep my donation private so that its not something some has to keep track of.

Below is what the mod said in regards to new bounty thread. If someone is interested I guess the right thing to do would be to contact the mod first
"If anyone would like to pledge after this I recommend contacting the OP by PM.
You can also contact me by PM to be added. Either way it should get to me.
I will update the list as time allows but a minimum of once a week or sooner as conditions warrant.
Edit: Updated 11/19 11:00 am
I am open to someone else other than the OP starting a new thread to maintain the list under very specific conditions.
If you would be interested in this please PM me and I will be happy to explain further.
Please contact me by PM if you have any questions about this action.
Thank you for your cooperation and support of XDA Developers."
Well... Much appreciation to pr0cl1v1ty for getting the tide rolling in this forum. Obviously, based upon the numbers of pledges, there are a considerably fair number of us that are perfectly fine with holding onto our ATT N4s and patiently awaiting progress. Nothing against anyone that has pursued other avenues... but I come here multiple times a day to see what (if any) root discussion progress has been made with regard to the N910A.
That said, It is great to see that a moderator has stepped in and placed an official stamp on how things should unfold. I'll continue to patiently wait and enjoy my unrooted beast of a phone until something noteworthy breaks on the root front.

Soraxd, the knox should be higher amount then the root, being that no knox trip is with root also. It would include all of the amount for root if all they offered was for root and didn't care about knox.
Can a mod delete the other root bounty threads and put up a single official one? It's very confusing and will definitely hurt the effort to have multiple threads and have people confused on top of having the original thread closed. What a fubar.

Historically the exploiters who come up with Samsung Knox bypasses are not the ones who come up with root. If an exploiter releases both root with Knox bypass as their initial release, then theyll claim both bounties.

Thank you.

Please point me in the right direction...

Ok sorry in advance for seeming like a noob... I haven't rooted an android device since the galaxy prevail years ago.... I currently have a sprint galaxy s6 ( BOL1 UPDATE) and I have been looking for how to root it but either I'm missing something or I haven't seen any root specific posts regarding the BOL1 UPDATE... I just want to be safe before flashing anything so any guidance in the right direction would be greatly appreciated...
Unikernel or Systemless Root with the new SuperSU will work.

Might be time. I would want to bring in @JoeFCaputo113 who created the original guide that we all used to get started.
Joe, a lot of people are asking if the same methods work for OL1. (They do, but people ask.)
And we can address using the new SuperSU (which Joe originally posted about) as well.
Thoughts?

Cheers
I just rooted the new android 11 update.
The only difference from android 10 is you should now use the newest magisk v23 rather than the older one
I followed this guide exactly except skipped all the magisk workaround stuff and just used the latest version of the magisk app to patch the boot.img

Yup, have a guide being published right now.
Are these for the AT&T version as well. Mine is currently locked if that matters

To be honest with you, I don't know if this will work for At&t, it might but I don't have the at&t model so I cannot verify for you. You can try flashing via adb sideload in recovery and see but non of us are responsible if things don't work lol

Lol yeah I know the drill around these parts. I just did a quick internet search and the update is ONLY for the unlocked models according to what I read. I guess I'll be waiting for the time being

It's late where I am, but tomorrow I may just try it and see if it will work. I'll read some more about it tonight and if I take the dive tomorrow I will report back to let others know.

After a bit of experimentation I managed to get it to work. Although you can't just `add sideload` it since the verification will fail. You'll have to unlock the bootloader and dd some partitions manually. Then once it thinks it's the global variant you can `add sideload`. I made a thread about it https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/turn-at-t-into-a-the-global-variant.4393631/
