Can you go from retail stock 6.0 with locked bootloader to 5.1.1? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm... asking for a friend....
But seriously, I tried following the instructions on the "[Guide] Step by Step from Stock N910V 6.0.1 to hsbadr's CyanogenMod 13.0 " thread, intending to bypass them when I got to the point of being able to jump over to the newer roms, and all I got was a boot loop when I tried flashing in 5.1.1. Is it because I'm on a retail 910v or was it a user error kinda thing? I tried multiple times and couldn't get it to boot after the flash, ended up flashing 6.0.1 back just to get my phone back.

I'm also ready to free the bootloader and root this thing. It seems emotion OS is the most popular and up to date now, correct?
I have the CPL1 update from Verizon( Dec patch). I know there are a bunch of threads with how tos, but it's unclear how outdated they are and whether it works with these latest versions. If someone can confirm the best way to go from cp1 to emotion.. Let me know.
Also.. I saw a while ago a guide on how to go to developer edition. Why isn't that front and center anymore? Isn't Dev edition completely unlocked... Why wouldn't I want to convert to dev edition before dealing with any rom changes? If someone can give some clarification I'd appreciate it.

Great news, I went for the plunge and succeeded. Confirmed -> stock and latest version software as of Jan 20 2017 (CPL1) can be downgraded to 5.1.1, rooted, TWRPed, and blah blah. I used the same guide you mentioned at top (hsbadr's CM13 guide), except i stopped at step 52 and continued to install emotion OS instead. Highly recommend it.
I'm on EmotionOS now. Wow, it was really worth it. So smooth compared to touchwiz 6.0.1. Haven't found a bug yet, but even if i do, i won't care.
I'm not sure what you mean "when i got to the point of installing newer roms". If you got to that point, why were you trying to flash 5.1.1 again?

How did you root it? I flashed mine back to 5.1.1, but I'm not having any luck rooting.

Follow the guide. You are going to go through a complicated process using the king root apk. I think the guide makes you use king root 3 times total to accomplish various parts of the process. King root loads up and spins for a few minutes, eventually succeeds, then you gotta punch in some things to command line using adb. I believe this is rooting your phone a few times.
Eventually you end up with twrp bootloader and jasmine Rom and everything just sticks.
So far.. The only annoying thing with emotion is that I lost volte and video calling. Maybe they'll bring it in one day.

HELP PLZ! How to Install CM11 on AT&T Fire Phone 3.5.0

Okay, so I sat down and was gearing up to install CM11 on this well valued phone.
I loaded up:
https://www.reddit.com/r/firephone/comments/3j67na/full_guide_installing_cyanogenmodslimkat_on/
As they have the easiest directions to follow and I turned on my phone. To my surprise, the firmware I saw was nothing like the ones in the directions. My firmware simply read "Fire OS .5.0"
I clicked check for update and then it started downloading 4.6.4, which I quickly turned off the wifi to avoid any issues.
The phone is an AT&T variant which I'm using on AT&T. What is needed to load CM11 at this point?
I tried looking for methods to manually update to 4.3.1 but I hear about white screens and crashes etc.
Can anyone advise a noob on how to proceed right now? Itching to play with the phone with CM and would like to tackle this tonight if possible!
Since you are already on Reddit, did you see the thread right near the top that asks the same question:
https://www.reddit.com/r/firephone/comments/3jb2x8/installing_cm_from_fireos_464/
Doesn't sound like there is any issue installing on 4.6.4.

HI! Thanks for the speedy reply. I did see that thread but it seemed a bit risky as it was a "you gotta just try it" type of situation.
I felt the safest way wouldve been to update to a firmware that has been tried and true and then follow directions from there.
But then again, I seem to be having trouble, at least for the att version, to find a way to manually update to the firmware to the tried and true version.

Still not sure what you are worried about. I haven't seen any reports that you cannot root 4.6.4. This person even gives the exact steps:
https://www.reddit.com/r/firephone/comments/3jb2x8/installing_cm_from_fireos_464/cuogpp3
Here's what I did:
FireOS 4.6.4 (US unlocked) - Install KingoRoot - Root - Install SafeStrap - Download SlimKat, GApps, SuperSU (for root) - Reboot into SafeStrap - Factory Reset - Install SlimKat, GApps, and Super SU.
Replace SlimKat with CM11 for your question.
Here is another confirmation:

And since you seem very nervous, here is another confirmation:

TWRP 4.4 build on 5.1.1 ROM?

UPDATE: So, I couldn't really wait, went ahead and flashed TWRP. It installed just fine, as long as you get into recovery immediately, TWRP sticks. I flashed SuperSU and rebooted and got into a boot loop, so had to flash the stock firmware again and everything is fine again. No idea why the bootloop, so if some expert knows, please share
-------------------------------------------------------------
So, T-Mobile/Samsung FINALLY delivered 5.1.1 on the P607T and it looks quite awesome so far. My device was rooted and had twrp, so I had to flash with odin and now have neither twrp nor root. While I know that its only a matter of time before the community updates the tools to make it easy for us to root, I wonder if somebody could tell me if its okay to flash the existing twrp_2.8.7.0_4.4 build on this new ROM?
I vaguely recall reading somewhere that with Lollipop, Android moved to a new FS, but suspect this only applies to the system and boot partitions? That flashing recovery should be fine, and worst case, twrp will not stick? But, just in case, it would be great to know if this is true from someone with more experience ... If yes, then I can try to flash twrp and see if SuperSU still works through ODIN.
Thanks!
Karthik
I tried root/TWRP using the P605 NEE thread method and I get the bootloop. It takes the modified ROM but not the SuperSU. Anyone else get root on P607T 5.1.1 yet?
From what I gather so far, 5.1.1 is rootable, but a bit more complicated than other versions. There are instructions one can follow to 'manually' root (meaning no simple odin flash), but these have not been tested on the Note 10.1 firmware yet and so no guarantees. I am told its just a matter of somebody who knows picking it up and creating a flashable solution, but the device is old and the world has moved on to Android 6.0, so this is not very high priority and we may have to wait a bit more.
The manual instructions, I understand them enough to want to try, BUT am not a developer and am worried about bricking my device! If anybody is brave enough to try,

should get you started.

Have you unlocked your bootloader ?
No not too sure how to do that. Any good threads you guys reccomend.
Many thanks
So I know this is scary for you and because it is something new, therefore be sure that you want to live with the responsability if something goes wrong.
Now, the next forum thread tells you how to flash an already rooted image BUT, and this is very important, this works only if you have the version 10c installed (Check in About Phone>Software Version)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/orig-development/root-tmo-vzw-intl-variants-soon-root-lg-t3164765
If you have the latest version of the software (20a) the best thing is to unlock your bootloader, void your warranty in the process, and flash a custom recovery. After that, you just need to flash the SuperSu zip file and you will have root.
To flash custom ROMs, just access recovery and flash the zip file of your ROM.
I'm using the unofficial CM13.0 and works very good for me, but I do miss the official camera app.
Thankyou very much for your advice okarr. Will look into this

Just need a bit of help getting going

So Ive searched around and I just can't find a definitive answer so here is what I got.
I understand that this here; is how you use marshmallow with the new bootloader unlock and root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...t/howto-bootloader-unlock-upgrade-to-t3398144
I also know that I have to do this exploit first to unlock the bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/note-4-verizon-bootloader-unlock-t3358913
My issue is I ended up getting forced OTA 2 weeks ago. So my current question is, Do I have to roll back to lollipop? Is root/unlock even possible for me? If so, How do I do that since I haven't rolled back before. Its been a while since I've been into rooting/roms. Is there a link to doing it for marshmallow to lollipop? Also what about the firmware?
Current Stats:
Model: SM-N910V
Baseband: N910VVRU2CPD1
Android Version: 6.0.1
Build: MMB29M.N910VVRU2CPD1
Kernel Version: 3.10.40
I just need an answer since Ive been reading threads the last 2 hours. Its confusing since the titles of most are how to unlock bootloader THEN goto marshmallow. Thanks Guys!
I think I solved it myself. Looking like I'm effed with this bootloader. Since I don't think its rootable or unlockable.

You can try to roll back to 5.1.1 by flashing the full firmware (thanks, hsbadr!) using ODIN. You can unlock the bootloader on this version.
The question is, will your phone let you. In another thread, the success rate appears to be something less than 100%. I don't know what the harm would be... if you can't do it, ODIN will likely fail. At any rate, the attempt is on you. I can't be responsible for what happens.

Just frustrated right now trying to get Wifi to work. It looks like its suggested to try Flashing MM Stock, Reroot and Re-unlock bootloader here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...t/howto-bootloader-unlock-upgrade-to-t3398144
Then use TWRP after all that.

Just make sure you're paying attention to what you're flashing. There are only three roms in the verizon development section that are able to utilize the 6.01 bootloader and modem. JASMINE ROM, PAULPIZZ 6.01 Beta and Cm13. The other roms are ports based on 5.1.1 so you may need to stay on the previous setup until more roms are updated
Tip the OP usually states what works/does not work and updates when things are fixed . The information changes quickly so sometimes you may need to read the thread from the end back to the beginning to see if your issues have been addressed
It was actually super simple once I found the thread on how to go back to 5.1.1 then how to take that and go unlocked w/ marshmallow chain. Last thing to figure out is disabling OTA on Jasmin ROM

Upgrading Modem?

Hello all. I recently spent 5+ hours rooting and turning my VZW Note 4 into a "developer" phone. I've rooted a lot of phones, but this particular process had me pretty frustrated. I had several problems with the software versions I was using. Anyway, I'm curious if I should upgrade just my modem firmware to the latest included in VZW's 6.0.1 release. On my old Android devices, I used to do this with great success. Signal strenght would increase (or worsen), GPS signal would be better, etc. Is this included in ROMS and/or is it safe to do this?
Oh man,lol don't tell me that. I just bought a note 4 off swappa and it'll be here wendsday probably. I have been wanting a note 4 for along time. Only reason why I never got it was because of root and BL being locked down. Now that there is custom roms & kernels I bought it and can't wait to get it. Is it really that bad to Root and BL unlock? If it took you that long it'll take me days because I work 12hr job 7 days a week. I'm just trying to find all the necessary files I need to download now that way that will be done with.

Look in @hsbadr's Jasmine ROM thread. There's a partial firmware to flash that will update both the bootloader and the modem to PF3, which is the latest and greatest. It's required if you want to use Jasmine 7.0 or @chevyrhoad's Grace 7 ROMs.

It's a matter of being familiar with the tools. The process is pretty rudimentary. If you have a knowledge of linux and/or abd you'll be fine. I had trouble when my phone decided to start boot looping. Turns out it skipped my mind to wipe the cache/data clean after a stock odin flash. After all is said and done, the process is fairly simple. Also, King Root is a big issue. If you dump a fresh ROM from odin onto your device, install King Root, and attempt to root it it will root successfully everytime, the first time. On some other ROMs it can give you a considerable amount of trouble. I recommend resetting your lollipop to defaults, rooting it, flashing to the 5.1.1/6.0.1 hybrid, rooting again, and then continue about your business. There's a certain set of steps that makes this process painless which you can only ascertain if you have done it.

Can I flash "N910VVRU2CPF3_PartialFirmware_PatechedKernel.tar.md5" from his thread overtop of my TRWM and CM 13 ROM? I have both installed, and I'm wondering if I can just boot into the bootloader and odin this to the phone. CM 13 supports it, so why not? I'm just worried about it a kernel malfunction.

To the best of my knowledge, it does nothing to the kernel. All it does is upgrade the modem.
