Hy, I installed new kernel on MIUI rom, and it booted fine, then I deleted cache and dalvik and it didnt booted anymore... I made backup anyway, and reinstalled the ROM and kernel, and everything is working fine...
Can I make another backup of this working one, and then on PC change data.img and sd-ext.img files from old backup so that my data and apps come back?
I really cant loose my sms/mms....
Maybe but you may restore the problem. You would also need to make a new Md5
Or you could use Unyaffs to unpack your data.img and get the sms database and drop it in your new data partition

If you just want your messages back, couldn't you just restore the broken
MIUI backup, flash over it with the exact same ROM version ? Kernel will
be the old one and maybe it will boot up again..

If you only want your messages you can do what rootSU said.
Did it today and all worked fine.
Get the mmssms.db file from data>com.android.providers.telephony > databases and via adb and your phone into recovery with the data partition mounted and cp the file to the same directory..you can backup your sms from the new installation via SMS Backup and Restore and then restore it to the "old" database..the sms will be added..

I am on Wompasaurus. Before was LJ1 stock rooted then MA7 DeOdexed then Womp. I want to try some more but hours and hours it takes to get everything running is ridiculous.
I have Titanium Backup, TWRP(GooManager), ROM Manager, ROM Toolbox and SManager. If I need something else, I get it.
SIDE NOTE: I was able to backup the 4.2 Gallery. But Titanium backup cannot find the 4.2 Camera.

I use Titanium Backup and Backup Your Mobile. Titanuim backup for apps and data. Backup Your Mobile for call logs, sms, mms, user data dictionary and wifi networks. I believe ROM Toolbox will do all of that and more. However just make sure that you save your backups to external sd and not internal sd as you will lose them if you do a full wipe of internal memory when you switch ROMs.

Extsd is your external sd which is where you want to keep your backups as well as always keeping a copy some where else like a desktop.

In case anyone is reading my thread for help / ideas, I figured out a shortcut.
When every app is working, use TB Batch Action -user apps. Save this to some place safe. Before doing a full wipe re-backup apps with changing data . i,e. games
After you get your ROM setup exactly like you want it go into twrp go to backup and make a nandroid backup. Backup your data, boot, and system I believe they are. (The first three options) choose the option to compress the backup as it will save it the exact same way just save space by compressing it and shaving 40-50% off the size.
Then after it says backup wad successful. Reboot system. Use ROM toolbox and backup all your user apps+data. Then go to your contacts choose export to sd.. Make a"V card" export all your contacts to your sd. Then download sms backup&restore app.. backup all your texts. Then after these steps are done reboot to recovery (TWRP) go to wipe and wipe (assuming you already have other ROM zips on your sd or external sd saved and ready to flash) wipe cache, Dalvik cache, system, factory reset, system, factory reset.. In that order. Back out to main TWRP menu. .
Choose Install and install your ROM zip of your choice. After it installs successfully and reboots setup your phone and get to home screen. Go to market install rom toolbox again. After that is installed open and scroll to backups. Restore all Apps+data that you want. While that's restoring open contacts choose import from sd.. choose vcard files... choose the one you just made and restore...
Once your apps restore open sms backup&restore them restore your texts... setup any thing else you want/need widgets settings options etc..
After the new ROM is setup to your liking. Scroll back to the top and repeat till you have solid Nandroid backups (Twrp backups) of all the ROM'S you want.
Then anytime you want to change between then you reboot to recovery (twrp) wipe with above said method then hit restore choose the ROM you want to restore to and voila you'll literally be where you left off to a T even the same messages and websites still open... Only thing you might want to do between nandroid flashes is backup any NEW apps you downloaded recently. Our make a new backups of text messages with sms backup&restore if you want your texts always up to date...

So here's the thing: I made a TWRP backup of my 16GB nexus before I returned it yesterday (multitouch issues, dead pixels) but see now that people are reporting an OTA update that fixes the multitouch issue. I would rather not restore that backup since it is the JSS15J system, so is there a way I can get the data of at least a few apps and restore them individually somehow?

Ok, can it read the data in the TWRP folder? I have used TB a lot in the past but didn't think it might be able to use the TWRP data.
If it's not compressed (I never do), TiBu can do it perfectly.
In Titanium backup pro in it's menu is the option to 'extract from nandroid backup' .
Did it just last week, so I know the current version works.

Use Nandroid Backup Manager. It's free.
It can restore apps and/or data, SMS messages, Call logs and more from your nandroid backup. It can also decompress the backup if it's compressed.
Advance Restore and just click restore data only on twrp

TWRP backups each partition separately, thus it can also restore any single partition so also /data

Of course. TWRP has no advanced backup&restore features because it doesn't need them: you will be prompted before each backup&restore action about the partitions.
For data of just single apps use better Titanium Backup. It can extract them from your nandroid backups

I think some of the gapps data is flashed to system, so it won't be able to completely restore it but after flashing gapps, you should be able to extract google apps with data intact from TWRP backup

Exactly what I do.
marsmallow 6 will update apps + data from your google account. Not sure it's fully implemented yet but it's supposed to work. I've tried it yesterday with a Mm6.0.1 on nexus 7 2013 and many apps were already configured. Not all of them. Going from MM6 to MM6.0.1 might complicate it so maybe it's better to restore with google and do a little work by yourself, to make sure. I gave up on those restore apps. It also give you the opportunity to do a clean up

1. Go to File manager on TWRP recovery, it can read the system data i.e. data/data/ file (while your other file managers can,only data files on SD or ext.SD)
2.Go to data/data and locate the data folder of the app you wish to extract; will be in the format 'com.app name'
3.Push 'Select folder' tab on the screen; it gives you option to COPY the file
4.Move up & paste the data/data file on your readable memmory: sd/ext.SD
And that's it!! Just connect to the PC & pull the file & there u have: your APP DATA FILE!
I was tired using zip extractors, changing file names & struggling with command prompts; then found this[emoji4]

And believe me, I could repack the data into my new ROM just like that!
Not sure if this messes up with your system but I'm going great so far.
So you Upgraded to a higher OS and find some of your apps to be crashing on your new ROM & have a nandroid of your stock:
You are going to switch data files between stock & custom ROM!
1.Flash the Stock ROM & copy app data from the system files to readable memory, as mentioned above, just add a letter & Rename the copy(which again you can do with TWRP!) so that TWRP may not confuse with the new folder
2.Flash the new ROM, uninstall the app that crashes & install the compatible version from the store
3.Allow storage permission from settings; open the app & perform some action so that a storage directory is created,if not already, in the system storage
4.Boot to TWRP recovery in the new ROM , so now you have the data/data folder of the new app you just installed(which is empty) as well as the data/data folder from your stock ROM on your SD/Ext.SD
5. You know were this is going[emoji16] Delete the data/data folder on your running ROM & MOVE(again with TWRP only!) the one from SD ,after restoring its original name, to the data folder from were you just deleted the other.
6.Wipe Dalvik/caches & reboot
7. Other than receiving a pop up that there may be some trouble with your android system, on startup, everything works just fine for me & the App is fully restored!![emoji7]

I don't understand this step. I go to file manager, then navigate to /external_sd/TWRP/BACKUPS/... and there are files like data.f2fs.win009. Now what?
I couldn't restore the backup I made from my sdcard. I kept getting 'can't find backup.img' error or something. Anyway, I still have the ~2gb backup with files like "cache.ext4.tar", "data.ext4.tar", etc. I just want to get my contacts' phone numbers, and find out what theme I was using. I already reinstalled everything. Is this possible? If so, how?
I would also like to restore my firefox profile if possible.
Are you using the same recovery? Have you moved the backup? It should be in sdcard/twrp/backups/ "serial number"/name of backup. If its having trouble finding it, you can move it to internal storage. Put it in the backups folder for twrp on internal.
You can extract apps from a backup, but not contacts or accounts. If you keep your contacts synced to Google they will always come back when you log in.

Been trying to figure this out for the last 30 Hours straight & now I'm at the end of my rag with bloody knuckles & a hole in my desk... So I thought this would be a good a time as any to ask for some advice/help!
I have upgraded/flashed my HTC One M8 (2014) from LP (Android_Revolution_HD-One_M8_41.0_866186) to MM (ResurrectionRemix-M-v5.6.2-20160203-m8) (Based off CM13). I created a backup of all my Apps & Data using Titanium Backup & also made a full Nandroid backup using TWRP.
The problem is with restoring the data within the Nandroid backup, previously I have used the "Extract Data From Nandroid Backup" option in Titanium Backup to extract my SMS/MMS messages to my new Rom. However when I try to do that on MM I'm greeted with the message "Failed to locate your TWRP backups directory. Please verify that the "TWRP/BACKUPS" folder exists on your SD card."
To make thing worse, when I try to restore my Nandroid backup, it all goes well except my WiFi & Mobile Data no longer work... I can connect to my WiFi but it always says that there is no internet connection. So restoring is not an option as I can't do much without internet access.
Anyone have any ideas? I have tried to use a different SD Card & no joy, could it maybe be a permissions issue or something or am I just being a muppet & missing a simple solution.
Either way any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Is your TWRP backup folder on the external sdcard? If so, did you give Titanium access? There's multiple thread about apps needing to be given permission to access external storage. Titanium Backup especially has a lot of threads detailing this because of steps needed to access your backup folder if it is on the external sdcard.

Since Kitkat (2 years ago man), we don't have direct external storage write permission. Google consider it insecure, so they implemented this feature. Many apps already have support for this API. I'll take Titanium Backup for example, as lots of you cannot find the way to use it on externals SD. In Menu>>Preferences>>Backup Location, you can choose Document Provider on top of the detect button.
In the provider, open the menu on the top right corner and select "Show SDcard", then you'll see External Storage in the left side. Select external SDcard in the document provider and press the button on the bottom, the app will then be granted access to the whole external storage. You can then create a new folder in TiBack and select it as your backup location.
Other apps also follows the instructions above, you just have to manually set up the folder where the app can access, in the case which most of us would love to give access to the whole SDcard, I set the location to the root of external storage. Each app has independent permission, so you have to manually grant each app you wish to access external storage.

'allo mate, I appreciate the reply but it has done nothing for me, just to clarify, I can see my backed up Apps & Data so I'm pretty sure it already has access to the SD card (correct me if I'm wrong) but it is still unable to see the Nandroid TWRP backup... bit of a Jar as I just paid for the premium version of Titanium Backup & Nandroid Manager. Nandroid Manager is able to see the files but hangs when trying to extract the Messages...
Any Ideas?

Copy or move the backup folder to internal storage and it will work. Not sure if it's a bug in TB or because of how MM handles the external sdcard but it doesn't check it. It finds the TWRP folder on internal, which if you don't backup on internal, only has your preferences (and theme if you use one). I never used it, so not sure if it was an issue before MM or not.
I did try and got an error about not finding a "clockworkmod/backup" folder or a "TWRP/Backups" folder so to see what happened I made a "Backups" folder in the TWRP directory on my internal storage and the error basically changed to say there were no backups in it.

Cheers for that mate, seems to have done the trick. Unfortunately when I restore my Phone & Messaging data it completely destroys my phone... I get the message "com.android.phone" has stopped working & the entire system slows down to a crawl... I also get the Sim Card icon in the top right of the screen with a line through it... Is this because I'm moving between Sense to something else? I'm really at my wits end with this.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

I would say that's definitely it. Not only are you restoring app data for system apps from two different Android versions (LP -> MM) which can be buggy, but also for two completely different builds (Sense -> CM) which don't use the same apps. Sense will use HTC's own Phone and Messaging apps and CM if I remember uses stock Android versions). It's been too long since I tried CM but when I did it I had a third-party program for backing up contacts and installed something like GoSMS to backup messages, then installed the same apps on CM and restored the data from within those apps and the stock dialer/messaging apps had the data. But this was before HTC added backup/restore capability into their versions of the apps.
I'm having a similar issue, I google searched and it brought me here. I can see my backup from within TWRP, even on the PC I can see the TWRP folder and files. But when I boot and use titanium backup or nandroid manager, it says backup not found. Even in the root browser, the TWRP folder is empty and even on the PC I can't see the files anymore. Its kind of frustrating because there are two apps that I want restored but I don't want to completly restore using TWRP.

Try going to Settings>Apps, find Titanium Backup, then select Permissions and see if Storage is toggled on.
I've got the same problem, storage permission is toggled on. Although I am using a LG G3
same here with my Galaxy S5 (AOKP 6.0.1)
The same problem on Xiaomi Mi Max (Android 6.0.1). External SD card permission is granted to TB (it can see full SD contents and select TWRP backup directories). But "extract from Nandroid backup" shows "folder not found" error.
I'm afraid CWM/TWRP directory locations are hardcoded as "/TWRP on SD card" while /sdcard is mapped to internal memory on modern phones.
I had copied data files of the backup (1.5 gigs, not a best choice) to internal memory (/sdcard) and TB immediately found them. Unfortunately, TB offers only apps and app data for restoration. I need to extract plain user data directories but TB offers no way for that.

DAMN THANK YOU that solved it
Anyone knows how to extract the nandroidbackup from the TWRP folder on ExternalStorage? I cannot move the backup because its to large for my InternalStorage. I think it's an issue in TiBackup, creating a symbolic link also does not work since my ExternalStorage is formatted as exFAT.
Another fix I discovered is get your BACKUP ID
twrp save folder > TWRP>BACKUPS>BACKUPID>backup
if you have a backup without a backupid folder it will not work!
Having storage permission or not doesn't seem to help at all!

Titanium Backup especially has a lot of threads detailing this because of steps needed to access your backup folder if it is on the external sdcard.

This helps Titanium Backup see its own backup folder, but doesn't help it see the /TWRP/BACKUPS folder

Can a symlink be created from the location it's looking to the location it's actually at?
