How Do I Keep My HTC 10's Screen On While Reading (Smart Screen/Stay....Whatever lol) - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

So other phones like the Sony Xperia and LG V-Series phones have a feature where the phone can detect your eyes and/or face while you are reading something on the screen while NOT touching it. This feature is MOST helpful when reading whatever is on the screen and NOT wanting it to shut off either.
For whatever crazy reason, the HTC 10 does NOT have this feature! And when I try to install 3rd party apps in order to make this an option, I always have some issue come up that doesn't let it work. Does ANYONE have a way around this that DOESN'T involve bootloader unlocking and/or rooting????????! It is so frustrating to me that HTC did not think to put this on a 2016 FLAGSHIP natively.
Thanks!

Why not just adjust the screen timeout settings? Not exactly what you're looking for but it'll do the job.

Well b/c I wanna save battery life. I'm not ALWAYS reading the screen, and I don't want it to stay on longer than needed. I just can't believe HTC didn't think of this. I LOVE this phone except for 1) This very issue and 2) The fact that when you enable ANY kind of security measure on the phone involving the lockscreen, Double Tap To Sleep ONLY works if you're ON the lockscreen (a lesser issue to me, but still). Both LG and and Sony have this same option, and NEITHER has any issue with it. You just double tap the screen to turn the screen off, and no problem. The apps I got that DID let the double tap to sleep work also disable the security settings, which isn't cool Just can't believe HTC didn't think of this.
They could fix BOTH issues with updates, but who knows if they will.

hi com,
This app is a step in the RIGHT direction, but it keeps the screen, on where I need something that scans for my eyes and/or face so I can read the screen comfortably and not feel rushed to touch the screen to keep it on.
I'll write to the developer though since he seems cool.
Thanks!!

Set it to 30 minutes or an hour (Which isn't possible on Samsung phones (10 min max so they have to waste unnecessary battery life with useless smart stay which is crap at night), and turn your screen off manually like everyone else.
Custom roms allow holding home button to sleep or various other options.

If you switch to viper ROM, there's a quick setting called "caffeine" it will keep your screen on until manually shut off or set period of time

I could do that, but I'd rather not. lol
I ended up finding an app called Wakey which when you get the full version, it keeps the screen on for any specific apps you choose until you either manually shut the screen off yourself or else leave/close out of those apps. So basically it's been resolved.

Turn screen off without locking

Guys
My screen timeout is at 1 min and it asks me for a PIN if unused for 10 mins. This all works fine but I want the ability to manually turn off the screen but don't want to input a PIN if I return to it before 10 mins. Is this possible? The key on the right of the phone turns off the screen but also locks the phone
Thanks

Can't you just turn your pin off?
Settings > Security > Screen Lock > None
Or just change the duration before it locks.

He wants a PIN, but only if the phone is locked for over 10min. Hes expressing that this happens if the screen "times out" but not if the screen is intentionally closed.
OP, this is often a feature of custom ROMs (time-outs and lockscreen delays), but the assumption by default is that if you mean to shut the screen off (intentionally use the power btn) then you want it locked, however if you let it time out, you will probably want to turn it on without having to enter a PIN.
How come the best questions don't get answered??
LOL they do get answered but the answers aren't easy ones to follow
I wonder if this actually is a bug. It's mentioned in leaked documents from Verizon as a fix that's coming.
Although I wouldn't bet my life on it.

Hang on, under Settings, Security, there is an option to "automatically lock # minutes after sleep". That sounds like it may be what we are looking for.

Alas no - that's what happens if you let the screen sleep by itself. If you don't want to wait the 30seconds (or whatever) and use the power button to put the screen to sleep it locks the phone at the same time.
I'd like this too but I know of no way to do it.
There was an app that put the screen to sleep without locking it - assuming your phone would auto lock after 10 mins. I used to use it on my N1...

Err.. how about no other phone forces you to do this? I have a strong VPN account I use to bypass my country's censorship, no private data involved no matter what the P stands for.
Give me a popup saying "It is recommended to have a PIN bla bla bla.." but don't force it on me. That's taking a page out of Apple's playbook.

Well, ok, your opinion.
I think it's a little bit over the top, though. "Forcing" extra security (maybe) is an incovenience, not giving you freedom of choice like Apple does is something entirely different.
I was really surprised when the auto-locking timeout was not in effect if you shut the phone down yourself. Granted, I can understand why it is like this, sometimes you want an 'instant lock'. But reality is that sometimes you don't.
My HTC Desire locked itself if I did not use it for five minutes, no matter if the screen shut itself off or when I myself did. Sometimes I was in a public transport or queue in store and just shut the screen off, pocketed the device to pay or buy a ticket and then took it out again, continuing where I left off without having to enter the PIN again. Sometimes I used my phone, shut the screen off and remembered that I wanted to do something else too and I could still use the device.
But this is not possible with Galaxy Nexus. It locks whenever I shut the screen off myself despite the set delay. The auto-lock delay only works if the phone's screen is not shut down by the user.
In response to the OP, a feature like that is included in customized ROMS (including the one I am using, AOKP). However, I don't think that specific feature will be available for stock ICS for the time being.

[Q] How to use the Epic 4G Touch

I need some form of manual, review, webpage, etc to be able to have my dad read up on how to use an Android phone. He has been asking very simple questions but for things that I won't be able to answer, I feel that it would be best for him to watch a review of the phone and it's capabilities, and the overall usability of Android.
Also, does anyone know how to change the default time out screen while currently on the lock screen. The lock screen doesn't follow the same time requirements that you set under the Display menu options. I have noticed that, but never have found a way to resolve it.
For clarification, when you power on the phone, you are presented with a lock screen. The time out for this (when the screen turns off) is considerably less then the selected options that you have chosen (I have 30 seconds for screen time out). Is there a way to raise this timeout?

This actually the point of the lockscreen. If you accidentally turn phone on while it's in your pocket, or after a bluetooth or missed phone call, the lockscreen is meant to quickly turn the phone off to conserve power.
Two ways to solve this problem for you. Either install a third party lockscreen software, like widgetlocker, or disable lockscreen completely with something like No Lock.

[Q] Anyway to get smart stay and some of the other stock features on a CM10?

I'm actually finding it easy to live without SmartStay, though I thought I would miss it.
There's quite a few smart stay-alike apps in the market you can try, such as ISeeYou

I agree. I don't miss it. It never being there is better than only working 50% of the time due to lighting, angle, etc.
What does drive me a little bonkers about the backlight on CM10 is that when you have it set to go off at say 30 seconds, but the phone not to lock until 60 seconds, hitting home when the backlight goes off closes the current app instead of just waking up the screen. You have to use the power button to do this, but I don't think I'll ever get used to that!

Yeah, I've noticed that too. I have my screenlock delay set to 60 seconds after the screen automatically turns off (vs manual powerbutton), and pressing home wakes the device but also pauses whichever app was running. Should be a simple fix... just have to eat the homekey event after waking instead of passing it along the chain.

New Features Requested

Hey guys.
I just contacted Motorola to request some new features be added to the stock ROM (which in my opinion) would be crucial to increasing the functionality and battery levels of the watch.
Don't know if any Motorola Dev's/Engineers are following this site but just in case, I'd love to have these features asap.
Please add more if there is anything I have missed.
1. Have the ability to turn Vibrate OFF while still receiving notifications on the watch
Why ? Because I have my phone in my pocket constantly, and my phone vibrates when a new notification comes up. I dont need my pocket and my wrist vibrating together.
Also, Increase battery life.
2. Need to have the ability to turn off notifications for certain apps. For Example, I want the watch to vibrate when an SMS or Email comes through, but turned off for Messenger, kik, and everything else.
Also, by having this feature, Im sure a developer could write up a small app to install onto the phone which would tell the watch which notifications to vibrate for, and which to just display on the screen.
And again, this will save battery life by turning the vibrate motor off for (in my case) 90% of the notifications coming through.
3. Have a slider to control the level of vibration or the burst of vibration.
Why ? This adds a level of customization to the watch.
Also, I see people complaining that the watch doesn't vibrate enough while in my case, its vibration time is too long. By having the ability to shortening the vibrate time, you also save battery life (if not by much).
By having all 3 features embedded into the ROM, On the average user, it should increase battery life by almost double (if not more).

Pretty neat ideas. I have one id like to add lol. I want to be able to turn off motion detection for the screen. I had this feature on my galaxy gear and it gave me an day and half EXTRA battery with it turned off. We could get similar battery life (3-4 days with average use, custom rom too) if this was disabled. I had to always press the button to turn the screen on to check the time, but notifications still lit the screen up when they came in. Totally worth an extra 24-36 hours of battery . However i like the idea of being able to tap the screen to wake the moto360.
So basically I want motion detection disabled but leave tap to wake on.

I like this idea because sometimes it's hard getting the watch to light up with motion, so turning off that feature for when it does work would be fine.
In my case, I have the phone vibration turned off and rely on the watch to deliver notifications.
My one and only important feature request is the ability to create my own canned response list.
Of course, official support for 3rd party keyboards would be nice as well.
Bluetooth LE Peripheral Mode
I'm not sure if they intend to include Bluetooth LE Peripheral Mode in their Lollipop release. Google chose not to include peripheral mode for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7, although it is included with the newer Nexus 6 and 9. But for Android Wear, Peripheral Mode would enable a huge number of new and useful apps, that would significantly improve the usefulness of the watch. The simplest one would be a beacon to help you find your watch when you forgot where you left it, but enabling service solicitation would open a whole new world of applications for the watch.
#1 has worked since day one.
I get a notification, my phone remains silent, the watch vibrates. It's in the AW app settings.
according to me, since the watch has a inbuilt mic, a feature can be added that when someone calls, answer from the watch, just speak that you'll call back later & disconnect. this will be helpful if you are driving... no need to pick the phone ...

Good list, I have one more. Allow the setting of alarms for only certain days. For example, I would like to be able to set an alarm at 7 PM that goes off only on weekdays and not weekends, as I use this to let me know when I can get into the car pool lane when I am driving back home from work. That alarm is useless on the weekend, so no need for it to be turned on every day.

Pretty sure vibration is app dependent. Example, 8sms. You can change the vibration length in the settings. If you set your phone to 1000ms vibration when you get a text your phone AND watch will vibrate for 1000ms(or whatever vibration pattern you set) To further my point I would NEVER feel the vibration of Snapchat updates because it was so short. I'm using xposed(gravity box) to change snapchats vibration length and I feel the notification on my watch and phone every time.
I agree 100% google should have a universal setting to be able to change vibration, notification, and screen light up settings.

[Q] Touch to wake options

Like the Title says, can someone please add a Touch-To-Wake option.
We already have the Ambient Screen and Tilt To Wake Screen options that were introduced in the Android Wear 5.0 update, but for the life of me, I cannot understand why a Touch To Wake option was never included.
Having read through countless posts and threads on the net, it seems to not only be mine but everybody else's bane of their Android Wear experience. It would have to be THE most requested option in the history of Android Wear.
I realize there is Theater Mode, but this just isn't good enough.
We want to be able to have notifications pushed to the watch, we want to have the Vibrate when a notification comes through, we want to be able to tilt/flick the wrist to have the watch turn on........what we don't want is the watch turning on every time it touches a part of your body. It is especially annoying if you are sitting on a table with your arms crossed, or even sitting in a car with your arm crossed over and the screen touches your leg.
Please Please Please add this option in the official Moto360 ROM and release it yesterday.

Its called theater mode....
You could always just compile your own kernel and remove the function. It honestly wouldn't be that hard. It would just take some research. If you want me to point you in the right direction, I can, but forewarned, it will require some possibly heavy learning depending on your current level.

Yeah, hence why I put this post into the Original Android Development thread. An option like this should be made a standard on all Android Wear devices, especially the Moto360.
I wouldn't have the faintest idea about compiling a kernal and to be honest, have no intention of rooting/modifying my Moto360 (even though I do it for all my phones).
All I wanted was to request that this option be made available, hopefully for the next Android Update because there are a great number of people who are having the same issues I am. Honestly, it is the only option I wished I had since the first time I turned the watch on.

I know when I'm sleeping this screen goes on and off all night. My arm hits my other arm or whatever... I toss and turn a lot.
I totally agree. I must have this option. No more tap to wake. I like tilt to wake but tap to wake activates on accident all the time. Can't find a solution.

The tilt to wake works by the gyro sensor. It just means you might need to give your wrist a bit of a flick to turn the screen on.
What i don't understand is the touch to wake would have to be the most annoying thing for all wearable, and yet the developers refuse to put in the option to turn it off.
even in the upcoming update, there is no mention of including that option.

You mis understood my statement. I was asking how one could find the touch to wake annoying but NOT the tilt to wake. As it is.. I am actually using it just as you describe. I have tilt to wake off and then I can just touch the screen to turn it on. I don't like the tilt to wake on the moto 360, I much prefered pebbles wrist flick to wake up. As for touch to wake, I am not sure why this would be a problem, what is touching your watch that keeps turning it on?
Tilt to wake isn't that much of an issue for me. I actually like it the way it is.
As for the touch to wake; you name it, it's annoying.
- Crossing your arms while sitting at a table
- sitting in the car with your hand on your leg (or between your knees)
- walking past someone and having their hand brush across yours (and accidentally touching the watch)
- crossing your arms
It's not enough that it just turns on but what add to the frustration is that if you aren't cautious, the Google Speak function kicks in and starts doing all sorts of crazy stuff on your phone
