A couple of questions for a new magic owner... - Honor Magic Questions & Answers

Got a magic from China. Beautiful phone running on AT&T with no problems. Have run into a few roadblocks.
1. Can't seem to install any other launchers. Tried many including Nova (my favorite) and they are all giving me a 504 play store error in install. No problems with any other apps but can't get a launcher. Google Now launcher did install but only a few widgets show and none for clock or weather.
2. Tired to add new widgets to standard magic UI - can't seem to be able to do it. Any idea how? Also want to remove home screen weather widget as weather app only show centigrade.
3. Any idea how to assign sounds to email? Can't seem to find that setting. There is a 'select ringtone' setting under mail but turning it in or off seems to have no effect.
Thanks

I have read the same complain about widgets. The weather widget cannot be removed. Hopefully that would be fixed in rom updates. You can also provide some feedback in the built in feedback app.
You can go through content in Huawei China forum here for similar issues and possible fixes: http://club.huawei.com/forum-2770-1.html
There is rom update already out, which seem to add some features and also change how the navigation using fingerprint sensor works. I think the rom update is part of the "development version" and you might have to register.

Thanks for the link. Thank goodness for google translate. I also see it has an NFC radio but not yet enabled. Hopefully soon.

Apart from launchers, do other apps from the playstore just install?

pretty much everything else has been fine. I am having some problems getting notifications regularly. They don't seem to come with any consistency. I tried moving from the native mail application to the outlook.com application but it was the same - you don't have as much control over battery/notification settings with this ROM as you do with the standard XIAOMI UI.
Phone says it has NFC but I guess it's not activated in the ROM. I haven't had any problems installing any other programs. Just no other launchers/widgets work.

I can't install ANY launcher! did you ever find a fix for this?

Never did and got impatient with the phone and sold it on ebay. The most recent update would never download (kept getting communication errors) which I think had to do with the server in China timing out downloading the file. A great phone but not enough support (even minimally) to work outside China (IMHO)

It's because they blocked 3rd party launchers. You need to install it as system app
Only installable launcher is google

Enabling themes in Verizon Lg G4

I am new to this forum so pardon me if anything is out of place.
I was messing up with my G4; looking for missing features and found this link (I can not post the url as I am new but I shorten it and it is)
http:
//
goo.gl/ucGEhu
I followed it and was able to enable themes in my Verizon G4. You may want to sideload Android lg smart world apk, to download themes from.
This is what the link states (I changed last two steps)
1. From Play Store install "Launcher PRO" FREE version. BUT DO NOT MAKE IT Default Launcher.
2. From LG Launcher (Stock) add activities*widget (remember from LG Stock Launcher)
3. It will open a black window.. with different activities
4. Scroll down to find HOME
Modified steps
Click on entry which says com.lge.launcher2.theme.LGThemeChooserActivity (I could not locate the entry mentioned in 5th step in original post )
This will create an icon at home with title "theme", click on it and now you can change theme on your verizon G4. If you click on plus it takes you to LG Smart world.
Or you can download using smart world and they show when you open theme.
It still does not show theme option in launcher like it does for wallpaper but does the job just fine..
Thanks
great guide! i was able to get the themes shortcut added, and it even hung around after uninstalling the launcher software.
Question - where do i get the smart world app?
I just google it and found it at some thread at xda, it was an old version as it asked to update itself as soon as it launched. try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2500961
I can upload the one I have if needed.

Now that we have root, has anyone figured out how to get the actual theme app in our drawer, rather than creating a desktop shortcut?
Not really sure why it will crash. What version you are on.

I can verify that the "Any Shortcut" directions in this post worked on my G4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/themes-apps/verizon-theme-changer-t3129702
Any shortcut also worked for me although I've moved over to Nova Launcher.

Both methods work the only thing I don't get is why the app drawer button doesn't get themed? On Eugene's LG pure ROM it does but somehow he was able to add the theme option into settings.

Debloating

Hi, I just want to share with you the list of apps I have disabled using "Package Disabler Pro".
The app costs a couple of dollars and does not need root: it only disables apps and does not remove them.
I am attaching the XML file: you can either import this in the app (and modify the outcome) or open the file to see the list of disabled apps.
Two more apps that can be disabled are...
... com.sec.android.app.soundalive: the equaliser
... com.sec.hearingadjust: tweaks audio thru headphones based on an audio test
Be careful that by disabling get the following apps (list not exhaustive) you may get FC's in some settings:
- Themes (on top of the main settings page)
- Calendar, Messages (sms), Email (in sound settings)
Nothing to be worried about: it's just bad coding from Samsung

Be careful about disabling touchwiz. If you don´t have a launcher, you will end up in a reboot loop (read it elsewhere).
Btw, I am using it too. Will post the list briefly, but I am having problems: cant take any screenshots. Pressing the home button and power button simultaneously does nothing. Any ideas?

There is a massive thread going on for this with the note 5. I have been keeping track. But is the bloat carrier specific? I'm with 3 UK. I have package disabler pro and have done nothing with it as I'm worried running an xml for say an American bloated handset. Will cause issues. I don't like just turning of something when I have no idea what it's for.

Hi thanks for the list. I used the debloater app along with the list above to remove a boat load of apps.
I am removing a few more, will soon post a new list. Phone battery is now lasting a lot longer. Have also installed Google Launcher: it is a lot smoother than touch wiz, especially scrollable widgets.
Updated OP with more info and a new XML fie.
Enjoy...
I'm not seeing any attachment on OP. How do I get the XML file? Thanks.

A little to agressive (i lost some basic apps and I saw NFC and Miracast disabled) but I re-enabled what I needed and looks good. Had only one force close in settings.apk but might be related to missing battery options which I re-enabled as well. But overall great work, beer for you!

Google Stock Dialer/Contacts apks

Here's the stock google dialer and contacts app I pulled from my nexus 6 when i had it. It's not the motorola framework dialer and contacts, but pure google stock. They are in separate folders. I've also have a few that I've pulled from the web as well. I hate the ugly skin that lg uses, and miss the true material look from Google.
You HAVE to be rooted for these to even remotely work. Use root explorer or whatever app you use, mount rw and install as system apk (go to system>priv-app). Folder will need rwxr-xr-x permissions. Give app r-r-rw permissions. So far, contacts are working and I've gotten the google in-call ui to work by placing the apk in the lg in-call ui after renaming the original lg-ui. Can't get the dialer to install. LG skin is deeply rooted in thier framework, so it's kind of a pain. I'll keep digging into this to make some progress. In the mean time, if anyone else wants to chip in and help out, please do so.
In the link to my drive folder there will be 4 files. One of them is a flashable zip named GoogleContactsDialer (credits to whoever put this zip together. Wasn't me). Another should be the dialer in non flashable zip, and the other files are the respective standalone apks. I would suggest flashing the flashable zip, as it has the libs folder included.

**UPDATE**
Ok everyone, I have a quick second to give an update (getting up at 0430 is killing me right now lol) on things in reference to the dialer. Make sure you are using the flashable zip. The separate apks are ok, but the zip makes things easier.
Basically most hassle free method I have used to get it to be the primary dialer and contacts app is by using TB to freeze these 2 LG Dialer and Contact applications that are listed below.
*Call 4.60.79.10
*Contacts 4.56.18
I'm using KLWP and Nova for most of my homescreens. I'm linking the Google dialer apk to whatever phone KLWP icon using Nova Activities>Google Dialer>Phone(com.android.dialer.DialtactsActivity; make sure you select this one). For those that use Zooper, the same method would apply.
In reference to getting the dialer icon to show up in the app drawer on its own, I'm still working on that.

Sorry guys that I've been MIA. Work and personal life have been really busy. I didn't remove the LG apk but just froze them with TB. So far the LG Contacts app doesn't override which is good, and I've set Google Contacts as my default. I'm trying True Caller but honestly don't like it. The Google dialer kicks in but it's random, and it doesn't show in my Nova app drawer. I'll get back to working on this when things slow down for me.

I wonder if one you that's had success with this might be able to offer some assistance...I flashed the Google contacts and dialer zip and froze the two LG files recommended by the OP and all call functionality was disabled. I could launch the Google dialer but could not receive calls. Did I miss a step?

Like you said, it is working - mostly. I no longer see the dreaded LG dialer (yippee!) but a couple of minor anomalies remain.
On an incoming call I do not get a full scree caller id and swipe to answer as I did on the N4 device;
Like you, I had to use Nova to create the desktop icon (which is no big deal I suppose);
When I bring up the dialer I see a "Speed Dial" tab but I don't see all my favorites (starred contacts). I tried clearing cache and data for the dialer but is not showing me the same starred contacts as the Contacts app;
Other than the above it seems to work quite well.
[ EDIT ] It seems that there is a difference between the contacts storage that LG maintains and what Google Contacts/Dialer maintains. I cleared data and cache for both, the LG Dialer and the LG Contacts app - note that in my case they were both frozen so I had to use ROM Toolbox to do this - and had the system re-sync contacts with Google. All of the sudden ALL my favorites show up as expected and, incoming caller Id is now displaying as it did on the old Nexus 4. Yippee! Apparently some minor issues can be corrected by reinitializing the contacts database on the phone.

Did you start out with a clean, well working system or could it have remnants of previous attempts to install a dialer? Most of my troubles came from the fact that I missed to clean somethng up from a previous attempt.
Essentially, I did not do much different from the OP. Starting with a clean system (I backup frequently with TWRP when I experiment with new things!) I flashed the zip file, rebooted, created the desktop icon for phone, froze the 2 LG modules with TiBu. I also copied the Google Dialer apk to the LGInCallUI folder in priv-app and renamed (but not deleted) the LG version which did not seem to make any difference to usage (I was hoping for a full screen caller Id).
As noted above, it seems to be working quite nicely with the 3 1 caveats I listed.

Every once in a while I get the Yelp! sponsored ad on the lock screen. I've tried turning it off from the Settings of the Blinkfeed (as I saw it supposedly worked with previous HTCs) but it doesn't on the 10. Anyone know the answer to my question?
Thanks,
Marius
I've never once had ads on my lockscreen. You must have some bad app that's sending you ads via notifications.

Not sure if you have it but es file explorer will cause ads on the lock screen with its own quick charge screen. Haven't had any since I uninstalled it.
I already turned off 'interest based ads' from Settings>Personalize>Manage Ads. By the way, I use the Google Now Launcher, so the Manage Ads option only shows when I have Sense Home selected as the default launcher. I'm still getting yelp ads in the lock screen.

Maybe, because I'm not using the Sense Home launcher, the OFF setting for the Interest based ads is not sticking?
It drives me nuts and I don't see that on the Verizon version. Something Verizon probably removed so you can't turn it off... So annoying

You are lucky because it always asks if in hungry and places to eat. I haven't added any new app from my other phones. I haven't been able to find it.

That app recently had an update that had some lock screen bs included. Had a battery icon on it and all.
There's another app I had a couple months back that did the same thing too. If you have sense apps ads disabled , it's likely an app that turned spammy.

Its definitely not from the stock software. My wife had the same thing happen last week on her note. It took a while but found out it was PIP software for taking selfies. Here is a great article that should help get rid of them. http://www.slashgear.com/android-ads-on-your-lockscreen-and-how-to-destroy-them-05438921/. It lists some common sources for these ads:
• Amber Weather Widget
• ES App Locker
• GO apps (of note: GO Weather, GO SMS, GO Keyboard, Next Browser)
• Kingo Root
• KittyPlay Wallpapers, Ringtones
• TouchPal apps (TouchPal makes multiple keyboard apps)
• Xender (file transfer app)
• Zero Team apps (of note: Z Camera)
The yelp and restaurant ads are because you enabled personalization in sense home. It's tracking your location and usually offering restaurants nearby.

check on blinkfeed settings>manage adds>turn off internet based ads. thought i read somewhere that caused lock screen ads too.
I figured it out, no thanks to Verizon IT. It's a google ad. Go to your chrome browser. Click on the three dots, Settings, Site Settings, Cookies, uncheck "allow third-party cookies" box. BOOM!
I just started getting the exact same kind of ads! Cannot find any information on the Internet about how to eliminate them.
Some flashlight apps throw ads like that, have you got a flashlight app?

I've been using Solid Explorer since ES started with all of that junk, maybe a year ago or so...? I did try the Chrome suggestion from above (the third party cookies tick box) and so far so good. Thanks to all for all of the posts! Much appreciated!

[APP] Wear Mini Launcher

I really love this app it does an amazing job of replacing the stock launcher, and let's you navigate everything like settings, quick settings a well as get to apps faster (multi column app vs single app display). You can also sort by active use.
Not sure if anyone else has tried it, the only part I wish I knew how to do was replace the stock launcher for this to get some resources back.

I had it on my watch for a while and found it useful. But then I removed it because I started getting an error "screen overlay detected" while trying to run some other apps (e.g Messenger). After several trials and errors I suspected that the Weat Mini Launcher may be the root cause. So I removed it. After that the error has not occurred again. But whether that is just a co-incidence OR the Mini Launcher was really the root cause - I don't know.

Yes, this is an issue I've found to. The app has a setting to disable itself, then you can run your app with the overlay error and give it the new permissions. Then go back to your mini launcher and enable it again. You only have to do this with new apps that require new permissions the first time.
