Hello all,
Yesterday I rooted my HTC One X and then I installed the custom Cyanogenmod 10 nightly build (cm-10-20121105-NIGHTLY-endeavoru), that all went through succesfully. However it was only for testing purposes, to see what Cyanogenmod 10 ROM was offering, but I now want to revert back my stock Android ROM.
During the installation process I followed the guides and I made a back-up straight after installing Clockwork Touch Recovery 5.8.4.0 (recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.0-endeavoru), however when I reboot after restoring my back-up my phone doesn't boot into Android OS it stays at the HTC logo screen. Before I restore I delete data and cache.
I do belive its a boot.img fault and I would love it if someone could help me find a replacement for my stock image.
I originally was using
Android 4.0.3
Unlocked international version (Tegra 3)
I purchased from Virgin in Australia
I really need my old ROM back if possible, can anyone offer me any assistance?

You have right, it's a boot.img problem. You have to flash the original boot.img of your stock rom. I think that it's normally in your Nandroid backup, but I'm not sure.

You need to flash the original boot.img with fastboot. If you boot into recovery and mount usb storage browse the "sd card" to clockwork mod/back up you will see boot.img, copy to your pc and flash with fastboot.

as they said the your boot.img is in the nandroid backup.... just extract it and flash it in flastboot
could i ask you to upload your backup file and share it with the community? i would very appreciate it

Hey guys, thank you for your help. Following the advice given I was able to restore my boot.img and boot into my old phones OS, it states 4.0.3 and looks pretty much how my phone looked.
However I wonder if I could get some more assistance? My knowledge is limited I find it hard to even search for the correct terminologies on this website, let alone understand all the material that pops up. I do try to take care and follow guides, I didn't seem to have any problems with Cyanogenmod on my HTC Desire.
So my problem is difficult for me to explain, I'll try to be detailed.
Before I attempted to test CM10 I always transferred every app to the phone storage. Then starting the process I then installed SuperSU, ROM Manager and Titanium Backup but I did not move them to phone storage. I used HTCDev to unlock, via HTC One X All in One Kit 1.2.2. Then after installing clockworkmod I completed a backup, with a total size of 2.47GB (I'm not sure of a typical size).
I successfully tried a CM10 nightly build 4/11/12 then 5/11/12 an hour later and liked it but wanted to revert, I had my above OP problem now solved. But when after restoring my original backup I only have Titanium Backup, ROM Manager and SuperSu as my installed apps. No other apps are installed or registered at all, I don't have any old text messages (except 6 very recent ones), or call log history. However my details are stored, so it knows my google account details and my wifi details.
Most people here understand how the HTC One X works better than me. It seems the backup is made up of 7 files my guess in brackets:
.android_secure.vfat.tar (contains the stored apps) 1.51GB
boot.img (responsible for how it boots) 8MB
cache.ext4.tar (too small for me to guess) 10.5KB
data,ext4.tar (contains user data, configurations) 63.3 MB
nandroid.md5 (checksum) <1KB
recovery.img (to boot to clockworkmod recovery) 8MB
system.ext4.tar (Stores the OS) 906MB
Can someone help diagnose the problem and offer a possible solution? I'll upload the correct boot.img when this is working.

i'm not quitely sure but i would reboot into bootloader and do a factory reset to see if this solves the problem, but i'm not sure this will

Doesn't that clear the data and or cache? Because I've done that, before I restore. I've tried several things including random button mashing

Looking at the file sizes of other backups, the cache can be quite large. Is it possible during the backup the cache part was fudged? Meaning that its all gone. Or possibly I hit clear cache by mistake? Though I have absolute no memory of doing that or any reason as to why I would. When I install some apps, it picks up old content.
It's maybe better to buy Titanium Back-up Pro. Than you can back-up everything with that. (Apps, text messages, settings,...) And than a Nandroid back-up and you don't lose something. You can just lose your sd card if you do something wrong. I do it always so.

Its embarrassing but I already own Titanium Back-up Pro, I assumed (incorrectly) that clockworkmod backup was almost like taking a snapshot of the current system operating.
I had already backed up everything on the USB mountable drive space, but not the part that is actually useful to backup. D'oh.
I wondered if anyone was familiar with clockworkmod back up process and could inform me of how I am missing something so obvious and I click X Y Z a voila, its restored.
That's strange if you restored both things and your apps and text messages and more stuff are missing.

I know, I used 7-zip and I could successfully extract the *.tar files and there was so much information there, it had all of the apps I used. In the morning (I'm in Australia), I will try to find a way to manually import information. No idea how to start other than with an Internet Search.
Okay that didn't help at all, I'm stuck. I can see the apps but they will not install from the phone storage.
I can see in the .tar files the system apps that come pre-loaded but are not on my phone now, like Facebook. It's frustrating because I cannot do a factory restore because I do not have access to an original HTC installation. Is there an official international 4.0.3 installation image available or am I stuck with a screwed up phone until HTC release the official Australian 4.1 release?

I'm making the assumption that something failed during my first backup and that is why it didn't work on restore. I believe its the cache information as the rest are large in size and they pass the MD5 checksum, I don't know this for sure though.
My boot.img would be no good for the collection as it already exists. The boot.img I am using is the one I extracted from the RUU 1.29.728.12 I downloaded, since that should be the one my phone came with and it works.
My experience from this is that Cyanogenmod 10 is not yet ready for me to use but is looking promising. Also that I cannot rely on ClockWorkMod solely as a backup solution and should have used phones included backup features and Titanium Backup Pro that I own.

I'm trying to restore a nandroid backup I did with TWRP 2.3.3.0 but I'm not being successful and it's bothering me because now I have an unstable system and didn't really wanted to reinstall everything from scratch...
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong but after restoring the backup and rebooting the phone, I can boot but MOST of my apps are not "installed". Shortcuts I had on the home screen are there with their respective icons, I click on them and I get "Applications is not installed". I also get a notification saying that phone storage is running low, and it is hitting the 2GB limit, but it never was like this before, I had lots of of free space for apps. Looking at the nandroid backup, it seems I have data.ext4.win000 and data.ext4.win001 both with around 1.5GB, which goes above the 2GB limit. Not sure if this means anything...
Why isn't this backup working and what can I do to attempt to solve it?
Any other info I can give you so you can better try and help me, just let me know what you need to know...

I updated to TWRP 2.5.0.0 and now I get "restore failed"... :'(
There's no way to get around this is there?
not sure if your recovery is corrupt, maybe worth making a titanium backup of apps and system data, flashing a new rom and then restoring via titanium?

Can I make a titanium backup out of the nandroid backup? Cause that's all I have right now, my current ROM is not even working properly... I'll have completely reinstall a new ROM.

what do you mean titanium backup out of the nandroid? normally the data backup should be there too...to be sure i always make tit backup's for my apps...

The only backup I have is a Nandroid backup and nothing else. I don't even have a running/working ROM at the moment.

Normally the nandroid backup should also save the data which means the apps and their data, hm.....due that it isn't working you have to install from beginning

It's your fault cuz the app data is not being restored , 1stly when you made the backup with TWPR you should've selected to backup the CACHE , you skipped that step since by default TWPR skips that step = no apps data anymore, tho there are shortcuts and in manage all apps you can see those apps installed but with grey collor like when being removed from lets say rom cleaner , theres still the APP IMAGE but not the app it'self , you could try this:
1. Flash old recovery ( the one you used to make the back up 2.3 or which ever you used ) . full wipe , restore nand backup ( don't forget to flash the boot.img in the bootloader if you used different kernel in that time or flash the modules via recovery for the kernel you use atm )
after you boot up re-download those apps that are there with shortcuts but not apps itself and hope for the saves from those apps to be there.
Next time if you don't wanna risk it you titanium back up and save the apps that matter to you , when restoring them back : download the app , go to titanium and restore only the DATA.
or simply check in TWPR when making nand backup to save the CACHE as well in the backup.
Yeah, I know it was my fault... I was at work doing other stuff at the same time and didn't focus on what I was actually doing with my phone and I messed up. I was used to an old recovery on my old phone where a nandroid backup would backup everything needed and didn't really look at the partition options.
I'm doing exactly what you mentioned and so far seems to be working. All the data seems to be there, I just have to reinstall all the apps...
One thing though, since the nandroid restore process didn't work correctly, I was left with a full /data partition and my phone started reporting "low storage" and didn't allow me to do install anything. I looked into the /data partition and found out that the folder lost+found was filling up the partition, I erased everything in it and restored 1.2Gb of free space. I can now install all my apps.

Your rom is ok but i think your sdcard were you install your app has been modified. Just do a factory reset and install apps again it happened to me too).

Flash the recovery from the backup and then try to restore nandroid and if you have empty spce in the name change with _
I have different problem about nandroid back up, everytime i transfer my back up to pc and back again to my phone, the custom recovery cannot detect my back up. What should i do?

Make sure you make no changes in the folder structure and folder naming. It has to be exact the same as it was.......and when you want to restore a nandroid you always flash the boot.img and recovery.img from the nandroid and then do the rest of the procedure

thanks! Thats what i'm doing wrong, i just transfer the folder were the files is locate, i ignore the twrp folder. Thanks again.
I have searched all over the forum and the web and i can't seem to find any solution so i'm hoping someone could please help me: I have a ATT galaxy s3: and I just downloaded and install the CM10 with 4.2.2: i backed up everything on phone before doing this: the system data and apps: When I went to restore it: my contacts and my messaging are force closing. I don't even have my data for my contacts anymore: I fixed my contacts from closing but messaging is still doing it: can someone please help: im out of ideas

Did you try to restore system apps ?
If so that would be your issue and/or just needing to do another rom install. Bad flashes happen and just start over

When i went to restore i chose all missing apps and system data: thats what i saw online: I did wipe all my data and cache from my phone and tried again: and I got my messages to work and was even able to get all my txts too: but it still comes up that com.android,process,gapps has stopped working when i go to restore:

Do not restore your apps or data at all going from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2. Restoring data can cause a myriad of issues especially going from 4.1.1 to 4.2.2. You have to start completely over in a sense.

Nope just flash CM and then flash the gapps zip and install all your otherapps from the market/ play store

I went ahead and just went back to stock: i gonna wait till i get an sd card so i can do a nandroid backup and not have to worry about messing up again: I do like the cm mod maybe next time: I can get some help so i don't have any problems: but i do wanna thank you so much

Okay so I have a new problem: I went back to the stock rom: my backup was on this rom and on these setting: my titanium backup wants to freeze now and take up all my space: I have maybe 2 or 3 gb of storage from my music and apps: when i try to restore it: it will go down to 400 mb and freeze up: my storage will freeze when i calculate my space: I have just completed messed all this up i guess: I know that i will not even try this ever again: if i can figure this out: does anyone have any ideas:

What are you trying to restore exactly ? Here's exactly what I would do
1. Boot into recovery and do a factory reset i.e wipe, cache, davlik, /system and data. (of course backup songs and pics first, messages as well to your pc or ext sd card)
2. flash the rom
3. Flash the google apps zip
4. Reboot and go through set up
5. install alll your apps from google play and do no use titanium backup right now for anything.
6. Backup up those app with titanium backup if you so desire.

So even though I went back to touchwiz with 4.1.1 and my backup was on touchwiz: it wont work and also I did the reset and flash and it shows i have 8 gb used in my misc files section of my phone:

im sure this is a simple thing that i have missed but please help.
I was running PA 3.99, have made a backup using TWRP.
I have then wiped the phone, installed the new PA & GApp and rebooted. All is fine, I now have a clean fresh install of the latest PA.
Now what I wanted or at least thought was correct to do was restore using TWRP.... now this is my first mistake as all his does is restore it back to 3.99! DOH
So i then try again but with out wiping the system part. This time i keep 4+ but get stuck on a bootloader.
Basically all i am trying to do is restore my data IE all my exchange accounts and contacts etc which I thought would be done with the data part of TWRP.
All apps have re-installed with the help of google+ so is there a way to get the missing data back at all?

TWRP restores should not be done unless you want to restore the whole thing.
You have contradicting information, and clearly a lack of understanding the partition/folder structure layout of Android. The rom flash automatically WIPES system because /SYSTEM is where the ROM is stored. /DATA is where your data, apps, appdata, etc are stored. You should use Titanium Backup for backing up your apps/contacts (contacts should be synced with Google and not require backing up or restoring), call logs, mms/sms, etc.
I personally updated a galaxy nexus maguro, and 2 grouper (nexus 7 2012 wifi) from 3.99 to 4.0 with the OTA app, without wiping anything. From your 3.99 you should be able to do nothing more than install the new rom (gapps is even optional as the script keeps those installed anyway) and boot. dont wipe or restore anything. If that fails you should use the Titanium backup method instead.

For backing up app data, No. However in truth it is never a bad idea to keep a clean working backup image of an existing ROM in case all hell breaks loose on your device and need a copy of a previous image that you know works.
Needless to say it's preferable that you keep a copy this image some where other than on the storage partition of the device itself, like perhaps on your Google Drive space.

Hello HTC 10 users! I just got this device and thoroughly enjoying the speed and features. I got it s-off, Lees v2.41 rom loaded and using the team viper pnp balanced. Before installing the pnp I wanted to make a backup since I haven't done one since I got the 10. I noticed my data backup is 25GB. I don't even have 4GB used up by the internal space on the 10. In comparison my old m8 ARHD v53.1 backup is around 6GB , that rom was lolipop and using TWRP 3. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Hello HTC 10 users! I just got this device and thoroughly enjoying the speed and features. I got it s-off, Lees v2.41 rom loaded and using the team viper pnp balanced. Before installing the pnp I wanted to make a backup since I haven't done one since I got the 10. I noticed my data backup is 25GB. I don't even have 4GB used up by the internal space on the 10. In comparison my old m8 ARHD v53.1 backup is around 6GB , that rom was lolipop and using TWRP 3. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Are you sure you are using the latest twrp?
i've not even unlocked yet, but that smells to me like it's looking at an encrypted partition, which it should be, but i can't speak to whether or not that's normal (assuming not). may try posting this ? in the TWRP thread.
That's a huge backup, roughly double the size of a typical backup for me (12.59GB, including boot, data, & system). What all are you choosing to backup when you make a backup?

I forgot my startup is encrypted. I kept on hitting cancel before I mounted the partition found on the s-off youtube tutorial. Thanks for letting me know.
The Data only part is 25gb?
My Backups are normaly 8gb, in TWRP 3.0.2-5
3.7gb System Image
around 4.5gb User Data
64mb Boot and 64mb Recovery
Did you activate compression in the TWRP settings?

You are using a really old version of twrp. Please use the latest, which is 3.0.2-6.

What are you suppose to chose in your back-up? I back-up system, system image, data, and boot. Is that a correct back-up?
Sorry for the noob question as I am new to HTC.

Yes because that was on my HTC One m8. I'm on the latest version on the HTC 10. I already figured it out that the backups were copying the full encrypted data partition if I didn't enter the password.

That makes sense. Starting with 3.0.2-4 TWRP has been able to decrypt data partition. I missed the part where you said you were hitting cancel on the pin prompt.
Is there an option in twrp that allows me to switch between encrypted and decrypted data partitions?

That's controlled by your rom. Natively, Android M requires encrypted data partition, but some custom ROMs allow you to use un-encrypted data. I believe that there is also a script that you can flash in TWRP to allow stock rom to be un-encrypted, but you'll have to fish around in the ROM/Development section for that.
To decrypt your data partition, you have to flash a rom that supports un-encrypted data (or the zip file I mentioned above) and then format (NOT WIPE) data partition in TWRP.

System and System Image are the same.
For Custom ROM's System is fine, if you want to take OTAs on Stock ROM you need a System Image.
I almost never backup Data as every app should have a Cloud Save feature and i prefer to wipe my phone every few months to get rid of stuff i never use.
Mainly before flashing a Custom ROM or playing around i backup UserData aswell.
And yeah, always backup Boot when you backup System, only takes 64MB so doesn't really matter.

Makes perfect sense. I'm running stock debloated Verizon ROM.
