Which USB cable should I get? - ONE Accessories

Hi there,
So my original OnePlus data/charging cable is damaged and I have to put it in a certain position to get it to charge my phone. I had a spare but my friend has left it at his parents house and I don't think I'm going to get it back. I've been using the short charge cable that came with my OnePlus power bank to charge my phone.
I tried some old micro USB cables that I had lying around from older devices. They work for charging but they don't seem to let me connect my phone to my PC.
I also do not like the style of USB head that OnePlus put on their official cables, the plastic tab with the contact points does not sit firmly in the USB ports on my computer.
I want to get a couple of replacement USB cables for charging and data transfer but I don't know which cables would work with my OnePlus One. I would like to avoid an official OnePlus Micro USB cable as the USB connector is too loose.
Can anyone suggest a cable for me to get? I would like it to be able to charge at full speed and also work with USB file transfers and have a normal USB head on the cable so it sits firmly in the port.
I just don't want to order a wire and find out it doesn't work with the phone. I seem to remember my phone has always been picky with USB cables and I do have some driver issues that may be caused by the wire type.
Thanks,

Actually, yes. I've had my One for more than 2 years now and changed the cable as well. There are actually 2 cables I can recommend as of now - from Nillkin and from Aukey. Both are sturdy, solid, fast and just do their job as good as they should. Aukey, however, is much better in one aspect: it's longer. 2m vs 1.2m. Aaaaand it still charges with full 2.1A current, which, in my opinion, is pretty awesome. Both of them are also pretty cheap - you can buy them for ~ 5$ - just search for them on Aliexpress

I had good experiences with Sharkoon and LogiLink cables.

I've got the 5 pack from Anker and it's doing well. On a test it had good performance and was very cheap on Amazon.
Item model number: AK-B7103011
ASIN: B00Q88RI0S

You should get USB cable with Micro USB

Thanks for the replies, I guess my main concern was getting a USB cable that works for data transfer. I ended up ordering a triple pack of Aukey USB's. 2 x 1m and 1 x 2m cables. The description said that they work with 2.1a chargers and USB 2.0 data transfer which is what I need.
Thank you for the suggestions !

Can you please share the link of the purchase

Here you go, that's the exact pack I bought.

Is this as good as the original cable for charging & data transfer

You can try BlitzWolf reversible micro usb cable. It's able to charge with full 2A current and most funny, it's really reversible, so it does not matter which side you connect to your phone (unlike normal micro usb connector).

Yeah, it charges quickly, and data transfer works great. I haven't benchmarked it or anything but its doing its job, and the 2m cable is great! It still charges quickly despite being longer. The micro USB head has a satisfyingly click when plugged in and the USB head is normal and works well.

[Q] Power, but no sync? Is a USB a USB cable?

Folks....
I have a question about the pin out of a USB cable. I have a cable that has a micro USB connector at one end (it plugs into my HTC EVO) and the other end is a standard USB connector.
This cable works just fine when I charge my HTC EVO. However, my computers can not see my htc evo. So I installed software from Sprint called "HTC Sync" version 3 something. Nothing.
So here is my question. Are USB cables that are sold as "Sync" cables have a different pin out than a USB cable that is used for power?
Maybe I need to change a setting in my phone to make it sync?
In settings, under Connect to PC, I have it set up as:
Default Connect Type = HTC Sync
Ask me is checked
I also tried:
Default Connect type = Disk drive
Ask me is checked
Can some of you give me some advice?
Thanks
jack

I can't speak on usb pins but I do know that there are some shoddy low quality usb cables out there (the ones that come with epic 4g) and some good high quality ones (the ones that come with the palm pre). with the low quality ones I can't copy files to my card.
In general, unless it's sold as a power cable, it should have the normal connections. Some cables have the data lines cut and shorted together, which tells the phone it can draw more power than a normal USB port provides. These should only be used with chargers due to the risk of burning out a PC's USB port.
A good way to test is to plug it in, open Spare Parts and go to Battery Information, then see if it says it's charging on AC.
Not all usb cables are created equally.

USB Cable Charging but not Sync
Some cables do not have hooks and they are loose in phone. This also prevent to connect it with PC for sync.

Look sturdy but break too easily. Not as cheap as most chinese made but these cables usually break in about 2 months for me. Dont even think about folding it and putting it in a bag for those frail, dying HTC phones.
I wonder if these are easy to fix...

micro female/male hdmi and usb for Lapdock

I bought these on ebay. The HDMI is short but worked but when I connect both cables to lapdock, the USB is not being recognized so the keyboard/mouse is not working. I want this just to act as an extension so I can use full lapdock abilities with cables. Any idea what's going on (cable charges on plug but does not charge on lapdock)? Maybe someone has better usb cables.

i don't think it will work either way, tried a few things like this with no avail.
why wouldn't they? Cheap build quality that doesn't include the data wires? Hell I'll be willing to splice two cables together to get our desired effect, the only problem is that cords with a female micro usb are incredibly hard to come by
So that is what you think it is? No data on the usb cables.

the only reason that is my suspicion is because there are many "charging" products out there that don't really need data. Why there would be a need for such a small charging extension cable is beyond me, but it's the only solution I can think of, but I have no way of confirming or denying it either. The ebay descriptions seem to imply that the data wires are there, but we all know how reliable ebay can be...
Another idea I had was that it might be sensing the resistance in the cable, since, if I remember correctly, that was how some think/though the car dock puts the atrix into car mode without a magnet as is/was commonly used. Again these are just ideas.
Or the cable is just so poorly made that it's defective...I honestly have no clue
Has anyone got full lapdock capabilities using extension cables? I can only get the screen working and not the mouse and keyboard.
The HDMI extender was the hard one to find. There are other micro USB extenders out there, theoretically with all wires connected....

Kind of makes me wish i hadn't hacked up my lapdock to work with the Otterbox
Where did you get your HDMI extender? I got mine from All4Cellular but it's quite short. Will have to get another HDMI one if the usb cable you recommended works.

Here's what I am thinking about doing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/140626354628#ht_2821wt_1177 or http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-HDMI-...ultDomain_0&hash=item415eac6dc0#ht_2821wt_980
http://www.amazon.com/HDMI-Female-M...YPB4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1329854686&sr=8-2
then the hdmi cable that came with our phone:
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Stan...QTA8/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1329854856&sr=8-8
The HDMI certainly looks like it may work but the reason I didn't buy that product from ebay a few weeks ago was because it was $50. Now miraculously, it's only $6. Maybe I'll get that if the USB cable I just bought that was suggested works a few posts back.

This micro usb extension cord explicitly states that all 5 wires are connected (compatible with droid bionic for the purpose of docking with a case on the phone):

The HDMI cable seems to work. On the lapdock, with just the HDMI cable hooked up, it functions like it was it's an entertainment center.
The USB cord will need to be modified a little bit. I can't get it to seat right on the USB jack of the dock. I'll need to shave it down a bit as it doesn't sit down snugly.

I ordered the USB cable and experience this same problem, though I am waiting for my hdmi parts to come in (by April 6th I should have all my parts...). The cable itself works flawlessly as a micro usb extension cable when connecting it to the computer.
again as mentioned in the other thread, you want to be careful with the 5v coming out that micro hdmi port. for connecting back to your phone would be no issue, as the phone charges using this voltage, but hooking the lapdocks micro usb up to a host device probably wont appreciate the 5v coming back up the cable, where normally the usb device would be pulling power from said host, not providing it.
one suggestion is to just clip the red wire inside your micro usb cable/adapter.
btw the adapters i use do fit snugly side by side, without modification.
I've been following this thread for a little while now, and I wanted to share something I found.
I was looking at the Motorola Travel Webtop adapter. And I was curious to see whether it could be tweaked to suite our needs. I naively thought/hoped that I could flip the connectors in the device to make a small adapter to connect the Atrix to newer Lapdocks. Unfortunately as you can see in the pictures below (sorry not enough posts to link to the pictures) the two connectors are connected via a PCB not wires or a ribbon cable. Although I still have high hopes that I can de-solder the HDMI and USB connectors, and use a small length of flat ribbon cable to connect them and then re-positions the connectors in the case, to build a micro adapter to use the Atrix on the newer Lapdocks. Should this fail this will at least prevent others from making the same mistake, and solve the mystery of what's really inside the Webtop Travel adapter.
Do any one know if this Micro HDMI Cable would work for Lapdock.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-Feet-HDMI...s_Adapters&hash=item416612cecb#ht_1149wt_1187
Description says for Asus tf201 MEMO ME171.
I believe all Cables are standard. Can this used to Atrix 4g with Lapdock?
I have otterbox case for Atrix and don't want to Remove cover everytime to plug in Lapdock.

New usb cable

Last night my cat decided to chew through my HTC usb cable, so i need to get another one.
I've read somewhere that HTC cables have certain pins shorted out that enable faster charging (than regular micro usb cables).
Is there a particular feature i need to look out for when buying a replacement micro usb cable, or is the safe bet to get a genuine HTC one?
Thanks in advance

If I rember well the Samsung cables are shorted, not HTC.
I would go for Samsung or HTC cables, they work at least... had one from my Toucpad, broken, hama, broken, noname, broken, samsung (from nexus) working, one X, working
It's actually the charger that has the pins shorted to enable fast charge. If it was the cable then the cable would only work as a power cable (no data/sync). Just get any decently well made micro USB cable and use the official charger and you will still have fast charge capability. I've used a couple random micro USB cables I happened to have lying around and they all allow fast charge when I use the HTC charger, and none of them allowed fast charge on my other USB/AC adapters (except my iPhone 4's adapter). I went on eBay and found a couple of cables that do have the pins in them shorted and they fast charge on all of my power adapters. They theoretically shouldn't be usable for syncing since the data pins should be shorted however - and I don't want to test it because then the phone would start trying to pull >500mA out of my computer's USB port, which it may not be able to handle. And I don't like fried motherboards.

What your one x charger cable is, is a micro USB to USB cable. That's all you need, I use my fathers from his Samsung galaxy s and it works fine. You can use any micro USB to USB cable, I saw one just yesterday and a store for 3 dollars, they're quite cheap

This was my experience as well. Try other cables before you swap out your phone! :good:
The same with my cable. I guess they did it on purpose, that whenever your phone is 'tugged' the usb cable will be released instead of your movement being violently restricted by the force of the cable, which may cause you to drop your phone.
Any way, i bought a 3rd party flat USB cable which length exceeds 3 - 4 times the original cable , and it fits tightly in my phone's USB port. So i believe it is cable related.
I have the same problem, I guess it's just the one they sent. Oh well.
I did buy another cable, however I noticed that charging becomes extremely slow with it. I'm hoping to be able to find a better one that can support the higher charge needed for the phone, in the meantime I'll be leaving the phone down while charging I guess.

+1 same thing for me too. I was so worried thought it was a problem with the charging port but it seems the problem is with the charger cable. Using other cable is no issues.
Obviously it pops out very easy. I'm on my 3rd Samsung Micro USB cable, all are same.
But then I've tried my friends Galaxy Ace cable and it was fine. So you just buy a different Micro USB cable which will have same 2A output like stock one.

I. too, was worried when i first got the fone.... but it's the stock cable... tried another cable from another brand/manufacturer and it fits perfect.
I seem to be quite lucky. My stock cable fits nice and snug. I can even dangle the phone upside down holding only the cable and it wont come out unless I swing it or tug it harder lol
If you compare the stock cable with other cables you'll see that the plug on the stock cable is usually shorter than other cables by a millimetre or 2 so the little prongs on the plug probably arent grabbing onto the slots of the phone
Mine 2. I just stick blue tack on it

Yup, same here. I find the cable that came with my wife's Kindle is the best fit - needs a real pull to detach it!

Pixel2XL can't connect to PC via most of the cables

Hi,
Got my Pixel2XL, love it!
But 1 strange thing, I had the Nexus 6P before and a few cables some that I got in it's package and some that I bought (USB-A to USB-C) all work both for charging and for data transfer (more important for me adb and fastboot) except 1 cable, let's call it ORANGE (since it's color) that only worked for charging.
When I connect my Pixel2XL none of those cables work for data, only for charging! the PC doesn't recognize anything in device manager and the phone doesn't show any option and only charging. that is regardless of the cables or ports and even tried on another PC with same cables. same with USB debugging enabled and disabled.
BUT, when I connect ORANGE it works! now the strange part is that some of my cables are high quality and even pretty good companies like Choetech (if I wrote correctly) and the ORANGE, is some lame cable from Aliexpress.
So I wonder if maybe there are few standards that are supported/not supported on the Pixel2XL? or how do I buy now cables? same was when I tried an older USB-A to MicroUSB with an USB-C adapter.
I couldn't find any official data by Google.
Please assist, Thanks.

When I first got mine and I set it up and I finally wanted to copy over my ringtones, my laptop and PC wouldn't detect the Pixel. It would make a ding sound then go back to Charging. I then rebooted for the first time and then it worked.
Ok, seems that my "high quality" cables wasn't so good.
It seems that 1 of them wasn't choetech and the other that I though came with the Nexus 6P was something I got from the store since in those days they provided the n6p with a different charger (they couldn't deliver US plug chargers than)
after I found the box of the n6p I found the short USB-A to USB-C cable and it works both for data and for charging!
Thanks for all the help and everything, it was my mistake and a big learning curve of why cheap cables won't work.
I still wonder how does the phone know which one is good or not.
